And my hope is that God conclusions. And my hope is that God conclusions. And my hope is that God would do a great work today that would would do a great work today that would would do a great work today that would lead to such joy in the abundant life lead to such joy in the abundant life lead to such joy in the abundant life that Jesus Christ came to give us. that Jesus Christ came to give us. that Jesus Christ came to give us. Today, what I want to talk about is I Today, what I want to talk about is I Today, what I want to talk about is I just want to talk about the normal just want to talk about the normal just want to talk about the normal Christian life. I want to paint a Christian life. I want to paint a Christian life. I want to paint a picture from scripture of the normal picture from scripture of the normal picture from scripture of the normal Christian life. I use that phrase very Christian life. I use that phrase very Christian life. I use that phrase very intentionally. intentionally. intentionally. The reason I use the word normal The reason I use the word normal The reason I use the word normal is because I'm just painting a picture is because I'm just painting a picture is because I'm just painting a picture for you from scripture and we take our for you from scripture and we take our for you from scripture and we take our cues from the Bible. That the picture cues from the Bible. That the picture cues from the Bible. That the picture that the word of God paints of the that the word of God paints of the that the word of God paints of the Christian life is therefore the normal Christian life is therefore the normal Christian life is therefore the normal Christian life. But the reason that I Christian life. But the reason that I Christian life. But the reason that I need to paint a clear picture for you is need to paint a clear picture for you is need to paint a clear picture for you is because in the American church, there because in the American church, there because in the American church, there has become a distorted version of has become a distorted version of has become a distorted version of Christianity that is American Christianity that is American Christianity that is American Christianity.

  33. Christianity. Christianity. And if we're not careful, American And if we're not careful, American And if we're not careful, American Christianity Christianity Christianity will create a type of Christianity will create a type of Christianity will create a type of Christianity that would make biblical Christianity that would make biblical Christianity that would make biblical Christianity look radical. look radical. look radical. when what is radical is actually when what is radical is actually when what is radical is actually supposed to be normal. The other reason supposed to be normal. The other reason supposed to be normal. The other reason that I use the word normal is because that I use the word normal is because that I use the word normal is because today we're not learning from the today we're not learning from the today we're not learning from the Apostle Paul. Sometimes you can look at Apostle Paul. Sometimes you can look at Apostle Paul. Sometimes you can look at the Apostle Paul and just think, well, the Apostle Paul and just think, well, the Apostle Paul and just think, well, that's the Apostle Paul. that's the Apostle Paul. that's the Apostle Paul. But we're actually going to learn from a But we're actually going to learn from a But we're actually going to learn from a husband and wife that were just average husband and wife that were just average husband and wife that were just average church members. church members. church members. These were people who had a normal 8 to5 These were people who had a normal 8 to5 These were people who had a normal 8 to5 just like the majority of you. These just like the majority of you. These just like the majority of you. These were not W2 employees of the church. were not W2 employees of the church. were not W2 employees of the church. They were just normal people. But they were church members who had But they were church members who had become convinced that they only had one become convinced that they only had one become convinced that they only had one life to live. And because of that, they life to live. And because of that, they life to live. And because of that, they wanted to leverage their life for the wanted to leverage their life for the wanted to leverage their life for the glory of Christ. And their names were glory of Christ. And their names were glory of Christ. And their names were Priscilla and Aquilla.

And so what I want to do is I just want And so what I want to do is I just want And so what I want to do is I just want to invite you to learn from some average to invite you to learn from some average to invite you to learn from some average church members who were just like you church members who were just like you church members who were just like you working an 8 to5 or an 8 to6 whatever working an 8 to5 or an 8 to6 whatever working an 8 to5 or an 8 to6 whatever you're doing. And yet they experience you're doing. And yet they experience you're doing. And yet they experience the joy and the abundant life that comes the joy and the abundant life that comes the joy and the abundant life that comes with the normal Christian life. And as with the normal Christian life. And as with the normal Christian life. And as we look at their lives my hope is that we look at their lives my hope is that we look at their lives my hope is that it would lead to some of you saying it would lead to some of you saying it would lead to some of you saying something needs to change and why would something needs to change and why would something needs to change and why would I settle for anything less? So, if you I settle for anything less? So, if you I settle for anything less? So, if you have a Bible, I want to invite you to have a Bible, I want to invite you to have a Bible, I want to invite you to turn with me to Acts chapter 18. turn with me to Acts chapter 18. turn with me to Acts chapter 18. Because the life that I'm going to Because the life that I'm going to Because the life that I'm going to present to you, it's not for a radical present to you, it's not for a radical present to you, it's not for a radical few. few. few. It's for anyone who considers themselves It's for anyone who considers themselves It's for anyone who considers themselves a Christian. This is the life that Jesus a Christian. This is the life that Jesus Christ lived perfectly, died Christ lived perfectly, died Christ lived perfectly, died sacrificially, and rose victoriously to sacrificially, and rose victoriously to sacrificially, and rose victoriously to give you. He saved you so that you could give you. He saved you so that you could give you. He saved you so that you could live the normal Christian life. live the normal Christian life. live the normal Christian life. So what I want to do is I want to look I So what I want to do is I want to look I So what I want to do is I want to look I want to just give you a fly over of the want to just give you a fly over of the want to just give you a fly over of the times that we see this married couple times that we see this married couple times that we see this married couple Priscilla and Aquilla show up in Acts Priscilla and Aquilla show up in Acts Priscilla and Aquilla show up in Acts 18. These are just average church members. And are just average church members. And are just average church members. And this couple becomes very important to this couple becomes very important to this couple becomes very important to Paul. We know that they become important Paul. Though he knew only the baptism of John, Though he knew only the baptism of John, Though he knew only the baptism of John, he began to speak boldly in the he began to speak boldly in the he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. But when Priscilla and synagogue. But when Priscilla and synagogue. But when Priscilla and Aquilla heard him, they took him aside Aquilla heard him, they took him aside Aquilla heard him, they took him aside and explained him the way of God more and explained him the way of God more and explained him the way of God more accurately. So what do we see them accurately. So what do we see them accurately. So what do we see them doing? We see them discipling together doing? We see them discipling together doing? We see them discipling together as a married couple. They are discipling as a married couple. They are discipling as a married couple. They are discipling a man named Apollos, helping him grow in a man named Apollos, helping him grow in a man named Apollos, helping him grow in his understanding of Jesus. The other his understanding of Jesus. The other his understanding of Jesus. The other time I'll I'll give you one other time time I'll I'll give you one other time time I'll I'll give you one other time that Paul mentions Priscilla and that Paul mentions Priscilla and that Paul mentions Priscilla and Aquilla. It's in Romans 16. Listen to Aquilla. It's in Romans 16. Listen to Aquilla. It's in Romans 16. Listen to what we find out about Priscilla and what we find out about Priscilla and what we find out about Priscilla and Aquilla. It says this. Paul says, "Greet Aquilla. It says this. Paul says, "Greet Aquilla. It says this. Paul says, "Greet Prrisca," that's Priscilla, "Greet Prrisca," that's Priscilla, "Greet Prrisca," that's Priscilla, "Greet Prrisca and Aquilla, my fellow workers Prrisca and Aquilla, my fellow workers Prrisca and Aquilla, my fellow workers in Christ." So these just average church in Christ." So these just average church in Christ." So these just average church members, Paul refers to him as his members, Paul refers to him as his members, Paul refers to him as his fellow workers who did what? Who risked fellow workers who did what? Who risked fellow workers who did what? Who risked their necks for my life. So not only are their necks for my life. So not only are their necks for my life. So not only are they workers for the gospel, they have they workers for the gospel, they have they workers for the gospel, they have risked their lives for the sake of the risked their lives for the sake of the risked their lives for the sake of the gospel. Paul goes on and says, "To whom gospel. Paul goes on and says, "To whom gospel. Paul goes on and says, "To whom not only I've give thanks, but all the not only I've give thanks, but all the not only I've give thanks, but all the churches of the Gentiles give thanks as churches of the Gentiles give thanks as churches of the Gentiles give thanks as well." So do you see that well." So do you see that well." So do you see that Paul is saying I'm so thankful for Paul is saying I'm so thankful for Paul is saying I'm so thankful for Priscilla and Aquilla but it's not just Priscilla and Aquilla but it's not just Priscilla and Aquilla but it's not just me who's grateful for them me who's grateful for them me who's grateful for them like all the Gentile churches celebrate like all the Gentile churches celebrate like all the Gentile churches celebrate them like their faith word of their them like their faith word of their them like their faith word of their faith has traveled their blessing to faith has traveled their blessing to faith has traveled their blessing to many in them verse 5 look at what it many in them verse 5 look at what it many in them verse 5 look at what it says it says greet also the church in says it says greet also the church in says it says greet also the church in their house their house their house Priscilla and Aquilla host the church in

  38. Priscilla and Aquilla host the church in Priscilla and Aquilla host the church in Ephesus in their home. Ephesus in their home. Ephesus in their home. They're just normal church members like They're just normal church members like They're just normal church members like so many of you and they experience the so many of you and they experience the so many of you and they experience the joy of the normal Christian life. My hope today is that their example would hope today is that their example would hope today is that their example would encourage you to not settle for anything encourage you to not settle for anything encourage you to not settle for anything different. So what I want to do is I different. So what I want to do is I different. So what I want to do is I just want to look at what the normal just want to look at what the normal just want to look at what the normal Christian life looked like for Priscilla Christian life looked like for Priscilla Christian life looked like for Priscilla and Aquilla and invite you to experience and Aquilla and invite you to experience and Aquilla and invite you to experience the same. Number one, Number one, the normal Christian life for Priscilla the normal Christian life for Priscilla the normal Christian life for Priscilla and Quillum meant that they were on and Quillum meant that they were on and Quillum meant that they were on mission together. mission together. mission together. They were on mission together. Remember, They were on mission together. Remember, They were on mission together. Anytime you always mentioned together. Anytime you see them mentioned in the scripture, see them mentioned in the scripture, see them mentioned in the scripture, they are mentioned together. They move they are mentioned together. They move they are mentioned together. They move with Paul to Ephesus together. They host with Paul to Ephesus together. 39. They were on mission together. Here's They were on mission together. Here's what I want you to see. Priscilla and what I want you to see. Priscilla and what I want you to see. Priscilla and Nola understood the ultimate point and Nola understood the ultimate point and Nola understood the ultimate point and purpose of their marriage. So, this is purpose of their marriage. So, this is purpose of their marriage. So, this is what I want you to think about. If what I want you to think about. If what I want you to think about. If you're married in the room or you hope you're married in the room or you hope you're married in the room or you hope to be married one day, I want you to to be married one day, I want you to to be married one day, I want you to think, answer this question. think, answer this question. think, answer this question. What is the ultimate point and purpose What is the ultimate point and purpose What is the ultimate point and purpose of your current or future marriage? of your current or future marriage? of your current or future marriage? Think about that. What's your answer? Think about that. What's your answer? Think about that. What's your answer? What is the ultimate point and purpose What is the ultimate point and purpose What is the ultimate point and purpose of your current or future marriage? Some of your current or future marriage? Some of your current or future marriage? Some people think that the ultimate point of people think that the ultimate point of people think that the ultimate point of their marriage is their happiness or their marriage is their happiness or their marriage is their happiness or companionship. You get married because companionship. You get married because companionship. You get married because marriage is a cure to loneliness. And so marriage is a cure to loneliness. And so marriage is a cure to loneliness. And so you get into marriage to be happy. You you get into marriage to be happy. You you get into marriage to be happy. You get out of your marriage if you're not get out of your marriage if you're not get out of your marriage if you're not happy and you realize that they're not a happy and you realize that they're not a happy and you realize that they're not a really good companion. really good companion. really good companion. So some people live like the ultimate So some people live like the ultimate So some people live like the ultimate point and purpose of their marriage is point and purpose of their marriage is point and purpose of their marriage is their happiness. Other people live like their happiness. Other people live like their happiness. Other people live like the ultimate point of their marriage is the ultimate point of their marriage is the ultimate point of their marriage is to have and raise children. Some people to have and raise children. Some people to have and raise children. Some people even in here maybe the reason that even in here maybe the reason that even in here maybe the reason that you're the only reason you're staying you're the only reason you're staying you're the only reason you're staying together right now is for the sake of together right now is for the sake of together right now is for the sake of raising your kids.

  40. raising your kids. raising your kids. But that's not God's ultimate purpose But that's not God's ultimate purpose But that's not God's ultimate purpose for your current or future marriage. God is the one who created marriage. And God is the one who created marriage. And so the question we have to ask is why so the question we have to ask is why so the question we have to ask is why did he create marriage? What is God's did he create marriage? What is God's did he create marriage? What is God's ultimate point in purpose for your ultimate point in purpose for your ultimate point in purpose for your current or future marriage? The reason current or future marriage? The reason current or future marriage? The reason that God brings a man and a woman that God brings a man and a woman that God brings a man and a woman together is to show Christ to the world. together is to show Christ to the world. together is to show Christ to the world. So if you're married or you you want to So if you're married or you you want to So if you're married or you you want to get married, let's just be clear. The get married, let's just be clear. The get married, let's just be clear. The reason that God brings a man and woman reason that God brings a man and woman reason that God brings a man and woman together is for them to show Christ to together is for them to show Christ to together is for them to show Christ to the world. And this isn't just my the world. And this isn't just my the world. And this isn't just my opinion. Let me just show you where I opinion. Let me just show you where I opinion. Let me just show you where I get this from in the scriptures. Let me get this from in the scriptures. Let me get this from in the scriptures. Let me take you all the way back to Genesis 2, take you all the way back to Genesis 2, take you all the way back to Genesis 2, which is the invention of marriage. which is the invention of marriage. which is the invention of marriage. Here's what it says. Genesis 2:24. It Here's what it says. Genesis 2:24. It Here's what it says. Genesis 2:24. It says, "Therefore, a man shall leave his says, "Therefore, a man shall leave his says, "Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to father and his mother and hold fast to father and his mother and hold fast to his wife." Watch this. And they shall his wife." Watch this. And they shall his wife." Watch this. And they shall become one flesh. So what's marriage?

  41. become one flesh. So what's marriage? become one flesh. So what's marriage? Marriage is two people who come together Marriage is two people who come together Marriage is two people who come together and when they come together they are and when they come together they are and when they come together they are one. Marriage is the clearest picture one. Marriage is the clearest picture one. Marriage is the clearest picture that we get of a triune God. that we get of a triune God. that we get of a triune God. God is three co-equal co-eternal persons God is three co-equal co-eternal persons God is three co-equal co-eternal persons that exist in one essence. God the that exist in one essence. God the that exist in one essence. God the father, God the son, God the holy father, God the son, God the holy father, God the son, God the holy spirit. There are not three separate spirit. There are not three separate spirit. There are not three separate gods. There are three persons that exist gods. There are three persons that exist gods. There are three persons that exist in one essence. From the beginning, in one essence. From the beginning, in one essence. From the beginning, marriage has has been meant by God to marriage has has been meant by God to marriage has has been meant by God to reflect God to the world. And then you reflect God to the world. And then you reflect God to the world. And then you look at what Paul says in Ephesians 5 look at what Paul says in Ephesians 5 look at what Paul says in Ephesians 5 and he says this, "Husbands, and he says this, "Husbands, and he says this, "Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the love your wives as Christ loved the love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for." So what church and gave himself up for." So what church and gave himself up for." So what this is saying is that the love that a this is saying is that the love that a this is saying is that the love that a husband has for his wife is supposed to husband has for his wife is supposed to husband has for his wife is supposed to be an ad to the world of the love that be an ad to the world of the love that be an ad to the world of the love that is available to unbelievers in Jesus is available to unbelievers in Jesus is available to unbelievers in Jesus Christ. If you're here today and you Christ. If you're here today and you Christ.
