It's really fun to with us at Watermark. It's really fun to with us at Watermark. It's really fun to have that alignment. And then I think have that alignment. And then I think have that alignment. And then I think like less reading this year has really like less reading this year has really like less reading this year has really helped me slow down and slowing down it helped me slow down and slowing down it helped me slow down and slowing down it has helped me understand the text. I has helped me understand the text. I has helped me understand the text. I love a good Bible study like I love. So love a good Bible study like I love. So love a good Bible study like I love. So like what we're going to talk about like what we're going to talk about like what we're going to talk about today is the result of extended study today is the result of extended study today is the result of extended study which I can do having the same passage which I can do having the same passage which I can do having the same passage day after day. You can go deeper which day after day. You can go deeper which day after day. You can go deeper which I've loved. And then I've just noticed I've loved. And then I've just noticed I've loved. And then I've just noticed things that I haven't noticed before.

things that I haven't noticed before. things that I haven't noticed before. And I've been challenged by the prompts And I've been challenged by the prompts And I've been challenged by the prompts on the app to put into practice and to on the app to put into practice and to on the app to put into practice and to experience the things that we're experience the things that we're experience the things that we're reading. So, thank you. Thank you to the reading. So, thank you. Thank you to the reading. So, thank you. Thank you to the Join the Journey team and I hope Join the Journey team and I hope Join the Journey team and I hope everybody is having a great time abiding everybody is having a great time abiding everybody is having a great time abiding in Jesus together through join the in Jesus together through join the in Jesus together through join the journey this year. All right, I'm ready journey this year. All right, I'm ready journey this year. All right, I'm ready to get into it. to get into it. to get into it. >> Today we're in Acts 19, but I want to >> Today we're in Acts 19, but I want to >> Today we're in Acts 19, but I want to read verses 11 through 12 for us. We read verses 11 through 12 for us. We read verses 11 through 12 for us. We read, "And God was doing extraordinary, read, "And God was doing extraordinary, read, "And God was doing extraordinary, some translations say unusual miracles some translations say unusual miracles some translations say unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, so that even by the hands of Paul, so that even by the hands of Paul, so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick his skin were carried away to the sick his skin were carried away to the sick and their diseases left them and the and their diseases left them and the and their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them." And so evil spirits came out of them." And so evil spirits came out of them." And so the question is, what are these the question is, what are these the question is, what are these extraordinary miracles? What are we to extraordinary miracles? What are we to extraordinary miracles? What are we to make of what's happening in these make of what's happening in these make of what's happening in these verses? verses? verses? >> Yeah. What these are, it's obvious. It's >> Yeah. What these are, it's obvious. It's >> Yeah. What these are, it's obvious. It's in the text. But what do we make of it? in the text. But what do we make of it? in the text. But what do we make of it? A little bit less obvious. Because what A little bit less obvious. Because what A little bit less obvious. Because what was the extraordinary miracle? Well, was the extraordinary miracle? Well, was the extraordinary miracle? Well, handkerchiefs and aprons were being handkerchiefs and aprons were being handkerchiefs and aprons were being carried off. carried off. carried off. >> Shout out to those handkerchiefs and >> Shout out to those handkerchiefs and >> Shout out to those handkerchiefs and >> apron. Yeah, of course. That's unusual >> apron. Yeah, of course. That's unusual >> apron. Yeah, of course. That's unusual though. Um, and they were healing people though. Um, and they were healing people though. Um, and they were healing people and setting people free from demonic and setting people free from demonic and setting people free from demonic oppression. So, that is unique for sure.
-
oppression. So, that is unique for sure. oppression. So, that is unique for sure. So, what do we make of this? And so, So, what do we make of this? And so, So, what do we make of this? And so, here's how I want to approach it is I here's how I want to approach it is I here's how I want to approach it is I want to talk about how these were want to talk about how these were want to talk about how these were extraordinary miracles. And I think they extraordinary miracles. And I think they extraordinary miracles. And I think they were extraordinary for a couple reasons, were extraordinary for a couple reasons, were extraordinary for a couple reasons, but mostly because they were happening but mostly because they were happening but mostly because they were happening at an extraordinary time in an at an extraordinary time in an at an extraordinary time in an extraordinary place. And that's part of extraordinary place. And that's part of extraordinary place. And that's part of what made them unique. So, let's just what made them unique. So, let's just what made them unique. So, let's just real quick talk about how unusual this real quick talk about how unusual this real quick talk about how unusual this is. The handkerchiefs and aprons is. The handkerchiefs and aprons is. The handkerchiefs and aprons touching Paul's skin, getting carried touching Paul's skin, getting carried touching Paul's skin, getting carried away. So, first of all, um this is away. So, first of all, um this is away. So, first of all, um this is explicitly described by Luke as explicitly described by Luke as explicitly described by Luke as extraordinary or unusual. So Luke tells extraordinary or unusual. So Luke tells extraordinary or unusual. So Luke tells us like, hey, this is even more unusual us like, hey, this is even more unusual us like, hey, this is even more unusual than normal miracles. Miracles are than normal miracles. Miracles are than normal miracles. Miracles are something wonderful only God can do. And something wonderful only God can do. And something wonderful only God can do. And each one really is special and unique, each one really is special and unique, each one really is special and unique, but these you don't really see much else but these you don't really see much else but these you don't really see much else like it in scripture. Um you you see like it in scripture. Um you you see like it in scripture. Um you you see nothing like this in scripture. The nothing like this in scripture. The nothing like this in scripture. The closest you can come is in Luke 8. Uh closest you can come is in Luke 8. Uh closest you can come is in Luke 8. Uh there's a woman who touches the fringe there's a woman who touches the fringe there's a woman who touches the fringe of Jesus's garment and she's healed. Um, of Jesus's garment and she's healed. Um, of Jesus's garment and she's healed. Um, and then there's a story in Acts five and then there's a story in Acts five and then there's a story in Acts five where uh people were trying to get in where uh people were trying to get in where uh people were trying to get in Peter's shadow. And it doesn't Peter's shadow. And it doesn't Peter's shadow. And it doesn't explicitly say that the result was explicitly say that the result was explicitly say that the result was healing or freedom, but that's probably healing or freedom, but that's probably healing or freedom, but that's probably what they were aiming for. But those are what they were aiming for. But those are what they were aiming for. But those are the closest proximities. So, not only the closest proximities. So, not only the closest proximities. So, not only does Luke tell us, hey, this is does Luke tell us, hey, this is does Luke tell us, hey, this is different, different, different, >> then you really don't have anything else >> then you really don't have anything else >> then you really don't have anything else like it in scripture. And then third, like it in scripture. And then third, like it in scripture. And then third, this was extraordinary in the context of this was extraordinary in the context of this was extraordinary in the context of Ephesus where this happened. Uh Ephesus where this happened. Uh Ephesus where this happened. Uh handkerchiefs and aprons were like handkerchiefs and aprons were like handkerchiefs and aprons were like commonplace items. Um and this was a a
-
commonplace items. Um and this was a a commonplace items. Um and this was a a place where the occult was commonly place where the occult was commonly place where the occult was commonly practiced. So the chapter mentions books practiced. So the chapter mentions books practiced. So the chapter mentions books of magic, silver shrines to Aremis, and of magic, silver shrines to Aremis, and of magic, silver shrines to Aremis, and a sacred stone that fell from the sky. a sacred stone that fell from the sky. a sacred stone that fell from the sky. So these were like special designated So these were like special designated So these were like special designated objects that their worship centered objects that their worship centered objects that their worship centered around. And here we see powerful things around. And here we see powerful things around. And here we see powerful things happening through commonplace items. And happening through commonplace items. And happening through commonplace items. And so the fact that they were common so the fact that they were common so the fact that they were common >> is unique. >> is unique. >> is unique. >> Yes. >> Yes. >> Yes. >> Does that make sense? >> Does that make sense? >> Does that make sense? >> Totally. It makes sense. And I I was >> Totally. It makes sense. And I I was >> Totally. It makes sense. And I I was doing some research into this into this doing some research into this into this doing some research into this into this passage and the idea that magic was passage and the idea that magic was passage and the idea that magic was present. And what did that mean to the present. And what did that mean to the present. And what did that mean to the people in Ephesus? And I found uh one people in Ephesus? And I found uh one people in Ephesus? And I found uh one one source said in the world of Paul's one source said in the world of Paul's one source said in the world of Paul's time, magic wasn't a form of time, magic wasn't a form of time, magic wasn't a form of entertainment. like today we might think entertainment. like today we might think entertainment. like today we might think of a magic show or illusions. of a magic show or illusions. of a magic show or illusions. >> Uh it instead was far more serious and >> Uh it instead was far more serious and >> Uh it instead was far more serious and corresponds closely with what we might corresponds closely with what we might corresponds closely with what we might today call sorcery, witchcraft or the today call sorcery, witchcraft or the today call sorcery, witchcraft or the occult. So when you're reading this occult. So when you're reading this occult. So when you're reading this passage and you see magic, it's not oh passage and you see magic, it's not oh passage and you see magic, it's not oh people were trying to do magic. It is people were trying to do magic. It is people were trying to do magic. It is people were calling on the enemy people were calling on the enemy people were calling on the enemy >> to either harm someone else or convince >> to either harm someone else or convince >> to either harm someone else or convince others that they were powerful. And then others that they were powerful. And then others that they were powerful. And then you you see what's happening and it's you you see what's happening and it's you you see what's happening and it's it's a no this Jesus he offers power it's a no this Jesus he offers power it's a no this Jesus he offers power even greater than what was viewed with even greater than what was viewed with even greater than what was viewed with high esteem in their society high esteem in their society high esteem in their society >> and he uses ordinary things to prove it.
-
>> and he uses ordinary things to prove it. >> and he uses ordinary things to prove it. >> So I I want to make sure that listeners >> So I I want to make sure that listeners >> So I I want to make sure that listeners heard what you just said. You referenced heard what you just said. You referenced heard what you just said. You referenced the enemy and convince others and really the enemy and convince others and really the enemy and convince others and really like sorcery, magic, the occult, all of like sorcery, magic, the occult, all of like sorcery, magic, the occult, all of it is demonic deception. Y it is demonic deception. Y it is demonic deception. Y >> and that is true today. like witchcraft >> and that is true today. like witchcraft >> and that is true today. like witchcraft like uh especially a younger generation like uh especially a younger generation like uh especially a younger generation that is uh as interested as ever in that is uh as interested as ever in that is uh as interested as ever in spirituality. Uh you can look a lot of spirituality. Uh you can look a lot of spirituality. Uh you can look a lot of different places for spirituality and different places for spirituality and different places for spirituality and there are fine people who end up there are fine people who end up there are fine people who end up investigating or getting involved in investigating or getting involved in investigating or getting involved in witchcraft or other occult practices not witchcraft or other occult practices not witchcraft or other occult practices not realizing that those are deceptive and realizing that those are deceptive and realizing that those are deceptive and demonic. demonic. demonic. >> Um and so that's what was happening in >> Um and so that's what was happening in >> Um and so that's what was happening in Ephesus and some of that's happening Ephesus and some of that's happening Ephesus and some of that's happening today as well. Uh there's just one other today as well. Uh there's just one other today as well. Uh there's just one other reason why this is really extraordinary reason why this is really extraordinary reason why this is really extraordinary and that is and that is and that is >> if you look really closely at this >> if you look really closely at this >> if you look really closely at this passage, it says the handkerchiefs and passage, it says the handkerchiefs and passage, it says the handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched Paul's skin were aprons that had touched Paul's skin were aprons that had touched Paul's skin were carried away. It doesn't say Paul was carried away. It doesn't say Paul was carried away. It doesn't say Paul was taking them and doing it. Someone else taking them and doing it. Someone else taking them and doing it. Someone else was doing it. And at the time all of was doing it. And at the time all of was doing it. And at the time all of those who were leaders in the occult, uh those who were leaders in the occult, uh those who were leaders in the occult, uh they were doing it for their own fame, they were doing it for their own fame, they were doing it for their own fame, their own power and influence, and their own power and influence, and their own power and influence, and usually their own financial gain. And usually their own financial gain. And usually their own financial gain. And Paul was not promoting himself. He Paul was not promoting himself. He Paul was not promoting himself. He wasn't trying to gain power. He wasn't wasn't trying to gain power. He wasn't wasn't trying to gain power. He wasn't trying to be famous. And he wasn't trying to be famous. And he wasn't trying to be famous. And he wasn't trying to become rich.
-
trying to become rich. trying to become rich. >> Um, and so that was unique even that >> Um, and so that was unique even that >> Um, and so that was unique even that Paul's ministry was done in humility Paul's ministry was done in humility Paul's ministry was done in humility without personal gain. And Luke makes it without personal gain. And Luke makes it without personal gain. And Luke makes it clear that God is the one clear that God is the one clear that God is the one >> doing the miracles and the powers >> doing the miracles and the powers >> doing the miracles and the powers attributed to God, not Paul and not the attributed to God, not Paul and not the attributed to God, not Paul and not the objects. So that's extraordinary objects. So that's extraordinary objects. So that's extraordinary relative to the culture. Let's talk relative to the culture. Let's talk relative to the culture. Let's talk about the time. about the time. about the time. >> Yes, that was that's what I was >> Yes, that was that's what I was >> Yes, that was that's what I was thinking. setting the time. thinking. setting the time. thinking. setting the time. >> Yes. So, look, everything we've seen so >> Yes. So, look, everything we've seen so >> Yes. So, look, everything we've seen so far in Acts, um, this is an early far in Acts, um, this is an early far in Acts, um, this is an early apostolic ministry when the gospel is apostolic ministry when the gospel is apostolic ministry when the gospel is advancing to new places that had never advancing to new places that had never advancing to new places that had never heard about Jesus. heard about Jesus. heard about Jesus. >> That's right. >> That's right. >> That's right. >> God become man, uh, crucified for the >> God become man, uh, crucified for the >> God become man, uh, crucified for the sins of mankind, risen from the dead, sins of mankind, risen from the dead, sins of mankind, risen from the dead, ascended into heaven. No one had heard ascended into heaven. No one had heard ascended into heaven. No one had heard that story. that story. that story. >> And sends the spirit >> And sends the spirit >> And sends the spirit >> and can't forget that detail. Yes. left >> and can't forget that detail. Yes. left >> and can't forget that detail. Yes. left to dwell among us and empower us to dwell among us and empower us to dwell among us and empower us >> um and and to be God with us >> um and and to be God with us >> um and and to be God with us >> um which we experience today. That's >> um which we experience today. That's >> um which we experience today. That's right. No one had heard that story right. No one had heard that story right. No one had heard that story before. There was no such thing in these before. There was no such thing in these before. There was no such thing in these places places places >> as churches. >> as churches. >> as churches. >> And so Paul was introducing the gospel >> And so Paul was introducing the gospel >> And so Paul was introducing the gospel and starting churches. That is unique.
-
and starting churches. That is unique. and starting churches. That is unique. We live in a day and age where the We live in a day and age where the We live in a day and age where the gospel has gone around the world. And gospel has gone around the world. And gospel has gone around the world. And there are still a few unreached people there are still a few unreached people there are still a few unreached people groups, but at this time a majority of groups, but at this time a majority of groups, but at this time a majority of the world was unreached. So, it's a the world was unreached. So, it's a the world was unreached. So, it's a really a unique time. Um, and just really a unique time. Um, and just really a unique time. Um, and just before this, Paul had built on the before this, Paul had built on the before this, Paul had built on the teaching of Apollos. Apollos had already teaching of Apollos. Apollos had already teaching of Apollos. Apollos had already ministered in Ephesus, but the people ministered in Ephesus, but the people ministered in Ephesus, but the people really understood John's baptism, and really understood John's baptism, and really understood John's baptism, and Paul was teaching the baptism of Jesus Paul was teaching the baptism of Jesus Paul was teaching the baptism of Jesus and and giving them the opportunity to and and giving them the opportunity to and and giving them the opportunity to receive the Holy Spirit, which they receive the Holy Spirit, which they receive the Holy Spirit, which they hadn't yet. So, hadn't yet. So, hadn't yet. So, >> they didn't even know they could. >> they didn't even know they could. >> they didn't even know they could. >> This is like new revelations are coming, >> This is like new revelations are coming, >> This is like new revelations are coming, and it requires clear authentication of and it requires clear authentication of and it requires clear authentication of a new message. So, that was unique. That a new message. So, that was unique. That a new message. So, that was unique. That was extraordinary. And then this place was extraordinary. And then this place was extraordinary. And then this place was extraordinary. We've already kind of was extraordinary. We've already kind of was extraordinary. We've already kind of hit on this. hit on this. hit on this. >> Tell us a little bit more about the >> Tell us a little bit more about the >> Tell us a little bit more about the city. city. city. >> Ephesus was an important city. Paul was >> Ephesus was an important city. Paul was >> Ephesus was an important city. Paul was eager to bring the gospel to Asia. And eager to bring the gospel to Asia. And eager to bring the gospel to Asia. And Ephesus was most likely one of the most Ephesus was most likely one of the most Ephesus was most likely one of the most influential cities in Roman Asia. And influential cities in Roman Asia. And influential cities in Roman Asia. And establishing a healthy church here and establishing a healthy church here and establishing a healthy church here and ministry here meant establishing a ministry here meant establishing a ministry here meant establishing a strategic ministry center that would strategic ministry center that would strategic ministry center that would then continue to go out.
-
then continue to go out. then continue to go out. >> Kind of like his letter to the Romans. >> Kind of like his letter to the Romans. >> Kind of like his letter to the Romans. He's recognizing Rome's a super He's recognizing Rome's a super He's recognizing Rome's a super influential city. I want to make sure influential city. I want to make sure influential city. I want to make sure they know what's true. He's doing the they know what's true. He's doing the they know what's true. He's doing the same thing here. same thing here. same thing here. >> That's why it's such a robust letter. >> That's why it's such a robust letter. >> That's why it's such a robust letter. And that's why I love that our church is And that's why I love that our church is And that's why I love that our church is in Dallas. Dallas is like a a big hub of in Dallas. Dallas is like a a big hub of in Dallas. Dallas is like a a big hub of commerce and transportation and I mean a commerce and transportation and I mean a commerce and transportation and I mean a lot of things. Um it's not like the most lot of things. Um it's not like the most lot of things. Um it's not like the most influential city in the world, but it's influential city in the world, but it's influential city in the world, but it's a big one. And I love that watermark's a big one. And I love that watermark's a big one. And I love that watermark's right in the middle of it. Um so like right in the middle of it. Um so like right in the middle of it. Um so like establishing this ministry was super establishing this ministry was super establishing this ministry was super important but Ephesus was like also the important but Ephesus was like also the important but Ephesus was like also the center of idol worship. Uh there was a a center of idol worship. Uh there was a a center of idol worship. Uh there was a a big um worship of one of the goddesses big um worship of one of the goddesses big um worship of one of the goddesses named Artemis and there was magic and named Artemis and there was magic and named Artemis and there was magic and occult practices. Um, and so this occult practices. Um, and so this occult practices. Um, and so this reality of what Ephesus was, it called reality of what Ephesus was, it called reality of what Ephesus was, it called for an unmistakable display of the power for an unmistakable display of the power for an unmistakable display of the power of Jesus that far exceeded every other of Jesus that far exceeded every other of Jesus that far exceeded every other lowercase G god, any other form of lowercase G god, any other form of lowercase G god, any other form of magic, superstition or demonic magic, superstition or demonic magic, superstition or demonic influence. So there was it was in an influence. So there was it was in an influence. So there was it was in an extraordinary place that required extraordinary place that required extraordinary place that required something extraordinary. So at this time something extraordinary. So at this time something extraordinary. So at this time and place, God chose to make a statement and place, God chose to make a statement and place, God chose to make a statement by putting dark powers to public shame.
-
by putting dark powers to public shame. by putting dark powers to public shame. And the result that we'll see like in And the result that we'll see like in And the result that we'll see like in the rest of this passage was awesome. the rest of this passage was awesome. the rest of this passage was awesome. Confession, repentance, the advance of Confession, repentance, the advance of Confession, repentance, the advance of the gospel, and the establishment of the gospel, and the establishment of the gospel, and the establishment of churches. And this was one of the things churches. And this was one of the things churches. And this was one of the things that encouraged me the most. And we'll that encouraged me the most. And we'll that encouraged me the most. And we'll start to wrap up with this, but um I start to wrap up with this, but um I start to wrap up with this, but um I love this reality that today when we're love this reality that today when we're love this reality that today when we're recording this, there is no temple to recording this, there is no temple to recording this, there is no temple to Artemis and there is no one worshiping Artemis and there is no one worshiping Artemis and there is no one worshiping Artemis, but Jesus is still being Artemis, but Jesus is still being Artemis, but Jesus is still being worshiped. This church is still here. worshiped. This church is still here. worshiped. This church is still here. There are churches all over the world. There are churches all over the world. There are churches all over the world. The church is advancing and Artemis is The church is advancing and Artemis is The church is advancing and Artemis is asleep, is gone, is dead asleep, is gone, is dead asleep, is gone, is dead >> and Jesus is alive. That's >> and Jesus is alive. That's >> and Jesus is alive. That's extraordinary. extraordinary. extraordinary. >> It is. What I what I hear you saying is >> It is. What I what I hear you saying is >> It is. What I what I hear you saying is extraordinary miracles at an extraordinary miracles at an extraordinary miracles at an extraordinary time in an extraordinary extraordinary time in an extraordinary extraordinary time in an extraordinary place. place. place. >> Yes. Like Luke is not not prescriptive. Like Luke is not not prescriptive.
