So, it was a real gift yesterday to get So, it was a real gift yesterday to get So, it was a real gift yesterday to get the chance to hang out with some of our the chance to hang out with some of our the chance to hang out with some of our youth who are uh going through that youth who are uh going through that youth who are uh going through that leadership academy that we do. We had a similar program at the church I grew up similar program at the church I grew up similar program at the church I grew up in in Arizona where they let some of the in in Arizona where they let some of the in in Arizona where they let some of the seniors volunteer with the junior high seniors volunteer with the junior high seniors volunteer with the junior high ministry at the church, seventh and ministry at the church, seventh and ministry at the church, seventh and eighth grade. And I got my first chance eighth grade. And I got my first chance eighth grade. And I got my first chance to like co-lead a Bible study. My to like co-lead a Bible study. My to like co-lead a Bible study. My friends and I, we got to plan some friends and I, we got to plan some friends and I, we got to plan some events and games that would take place.

But one of the things we got ministry. But one of the things we got ministry. But one of the things we got to do was church camp in the summer. And to do was church camp in the summer. We'd go up a couple hours north into the mountains, but it hours north into the mountains, but it hours north into the mountains, but it was still pretty hot up that way. And I remember this particular summer, the remember this particular summer, the remember this particular summer, the theme of camp that week was the theme of camp that week was the theme of camp that week was the Christian life. They wanted the kids to Christian life. They wanted the kids to Christian life. They wanted the kids to think deeply about what it meant to be think deeply about what it meant to be think deeply about what it meant to be uh a real disciple of Christ, to follow uh a real disciple of Christ, to follow uh a real disciple of Christ, to follow Jesus, not unlike the series we've been Jesus, not unlike the series we've been Jesus, not unlike the series we've been in over the last couple of weeks. And in over the last couple of weeks. And in over the last couple of weeks. And and it ended after thinking kind of and it ended after thinking kind of and it ended after thinking kind of deeply about who Jesus is around how do deeply about who Jesus is around how do deeply about who Jesus is around how do we now serve others in in light of what we now serve others in in light of what we now serve others in in light of what we've learned. And the text that was the we've learned. And the text that was the we've learned. And some of the leaders in in planning conversations I was not privy planning conversations I was not privy planning conversations I was not privy to decided we got to subvert that to decided we got to subvert that to decided we got to subvert that natural dynamic between kids and adults natural dynamic between kids and adults natural dynamic between kids and adults and we are going to wash the feet of all and we are going to wash the feet of all and we are going to wash the feet of all the kids while we're there. which is a the kids while we're there. which is a the kids while we're there. which is a wonderful idea wonderful idea wonderful idea in theory because if you've ever been to in theory because if you've ever been to in theory because if you've ever been to camp with junior high boys in camp with junior high boys in camp with junior high boys in particular, there is an unspoken rule particular, there is an unspoken rule particular, there is an unspoken rule that you do not shower while you are at that you do not shower while you are at that you do not shower while you are at camp. And after a week of seventh and camp. And after a week of seventh and camp. And after a week of seventh and eighth grade boys running around in the eighth grade boys running around in the eighth grade boys running around in the dirt uh of this church camp up in dirt uh of this church camp up in dirt uh of this church camp up in Arizona, the smells start to uh you know

So, I take the towel and I kind of dirt. So, I take the towel and I kind of dirt. But you know that it is both kind camp. But you know that it is both kind camp. But you know that it is both kind of messy, it's vulnerable, but it's also of messy, it's vulnerable, but it's also of messy, it's vulnerable, but it's also beautiful. And as kind of smelly as that beautiful. And as kind of smelly as that beautiful. And as kind of smelly as that moment was, I still loved and cherished moment was, I still loved and cherished moment was, I still loved and cherished that opportunity of getting to serve in that opportunity of getting to serve in that opportunity of getting to serve in those kinds of ways, right? It is messy. those kinds of ways, right? It is messy. those kinds of ways, right? It is messy. It's vulnerable, yet it's beautiful. And It's vulnerable, yet it's beautiful. And that's a bit of the picture of what that's a bit of the picture of what that's a bit of the picture of what Jesus is doing with his disciples in Jesus is doing with his disciples in Jesus is doing with his disciples in this moment. A little bit like church this moment. A little bit like church this moment. A little bit like church camp, Jesus in the ancient world didn't camp, Jesus in the ancient world didn't camp, Jesus in the ancient world didn't have some of the modern luxuries that we have some of the modern luxuries that we have some of the modern luxuries that we did. And so one of the practices that did. And so one of the practices that did. And so one of the practices that was common in the ancient world was foot was common in the ancient world was foot was common in the ancient world was foot washing where typically uh a servant or washing where typically uh a servant or washing where typically uh a servant or someone who's kind of on the low rung of someone who's kind of on the low rung of someone who's kind of on the low rung of the totem pole would wash the feet of the totem pole would wash the feet of the totem pole would wash the feet of the guests who would come over into the the guests who would come over into the the guests who would come over into the household. I mean, for John, this is so him. I mean, for John, this is so him. I mean, for John, this is so profound and it's so easy for us to miss profound and it's so easy for us to miss profound and it's so easy for us to miss that Jesus, the very fullness of that Jesus, the very fullness of that Jesus, the very fullness of divinity, lowers himself divinity, lowers himself divinity, lowers himself and washes the feet of his disciples.

It's it's not that he thought, people. It's it's not that he thought, people. It's it's not that he thought, you know, a disciple appreciation Sunday you know, a disciple appreciation Sunday you know, a disciple appreciation Sunday is coming up and I I forgot to give my is coming up and I I forgot to give my is coming up and I I forgot to give my disciples gifts and and so let me do disciples gifts and and so let me do disciples gifts and and so let me do something nice for them, right? In that second scripture we read there in Philippians chapter 2, Paul there in Philippians chapter 2, Paul there in Philippians chapter 2, Paul picks up on this, right? He says it this way starting uh at verse 5, he said, way starting uh at verse 5, he said, way starting uh at verse 5, he said, "Let's be the same mind in you that was "Let's be the same mind in you that was "Let's be the same mind in you that was in Jesus Christ." It's it's not to do a miracle something that it's not to do a miracle something that it's not to do a miracle something that only one who is connected with God can only one who is connected with God can only one who is connected with God can do. do. do. that Jesus in the fullness of his that Jesus in the fullness of his that Jesus in the fullness of his divinity gives us this picture of who divinity gives us this picture of who divinity gives us this picture of who God is and he wraps that towel around God is and he wraps that towel around God is and he wraps that towel around himself and he lowers himself and he himself and he lowers himself and he himself and he lowers himself and he washes the feet of his disciples. And if we are trying to be people who look and are trying to be people who look and are trying to be people who look and love like Jesus, love like Jesus, love like Jesus, then we ought to find ways and places then we ought to find ways and places then we ought to find ways and places where we can give ourself away in where we can give ourself away in where we can give ourself away in service.

And I was trying to think, what's the supplement that when you take what's the supplement that when you take what's the supplement that when you take it after 3 days, you immediately feel it after 3 days, you immediately feel it after 3 days, you immediately feel the effects of it and you swear by it the effects of it and you swear by it the effects of it and you swear by it and you buy it for all your friends and and you buy it for all your friends and and you buy it for all your friends and you say, you got to start taking this. you say, you got to start taking this. you say, you got to start taking this. This is the best thing ever. Like I've This is the best thing ever. Like I've This is the best thing ever. He attended every week and uh was involved in some every week and uh was involved in some every week and uh was involved in some Bible studies, you know, read the upper Bible studies, you know, read the upper Bible studies, you know, read the upper room regularly and and came to me one room regularly and and came to me one room regularly and and came to me one day during the week and said, "You know, day during the week and said, "You know, day during the week and said, "You know, my faith just feels stagnant. Feels like my faith just feels stagnant. Feels like my faith just feels stagnant. Feels like I'm kind of going through the motions

I'm kind of going through the motions I'm kind of going through the motions and and I need something that can maybe and and I need something that can maybe and and I need something that can maybe ignite it, that can revitalize it." And so we talked for a bit and kind of where so we talked for a bit and kind of where so we talked for a bit and kind of where we landed was that we did this food we landed was that we did this food we landed was that we did this food distribution in the parking lot of our distribution in the parking lot of our distribution in the parking lot of our church with the food bank and 300 or so church with the food bank and 300 or so church with the food bank and 300 or so families came through and we always families came through and we always families came through and we always needed folks who were willing and able needed folks who were willing and able needed folks who were willing and able to kind of lift stuff into cars, heavier to kind of lift stuff into cars, heavier to kind of lift stuff into cars, heavier stuff and said come on out and volunteer stuff and said come on out and volunteer stuff and said come on out and volunteer with that and and he came and it went with that and and he came and it went with that and and he came and it went well and I caught him a couple days well and I caught him a couple days well and I caught him a couple days later in the hallway of the church and later in the hallway of the church and later in the hallway of the church and he said, "Oh man, you got to tell me he said, "Oh man, you got to tell me he said, "Oh man, you got to tell me when the next one is. Is it this next when the next one is. Is it this next when the next one is. Is it this next Monday? Could we do it tomorrow?" Right? Monday? Could we do it tomorrow?" Right? Monday? Could we do it tomorrow?" Right? and he was just sort of buzzing with and he was just sort of buzzing with and he was just sort of buzzing with this ignited faith. And I think in some this ignited faith. And I think in some this ignited faith. And I think in some ways service can reignite ways service can reignite ways service can reignite a bit of our faith. It's that thing that a bit of our faith. It's that thing that a bit of our faith. It's that thing that we can immediately feel the difference we can immediately feel the difference we can immediately feel the difference and the effect in our life just shortly and the effect in our life just shortly and the effect in our life just shortly after we take the opportunity to serve. after we take the opportunity to serve. after we take the opportunity to serve. So with that, I want to give you kind of So with that, I want to give you kind of So with that, I want to give you kind of two practices and a promise that Jesus two practices and a promise that Jesus two practices and a promise that Jesus gives. The the two practices are this gives. The the two practices are this gives. The the two practices are this that if you want to incorporate service that if you want to incorporate service that if you want to incorporate service in your life, one of the first ways I in your life, one of the first ways I in your life, one of the first ways I would commend you to do that is to serve would commend you to do that is to serve would commend you to do that is to serve as a family. To serve together as a as a family. To serve together as a as a family. To serve together as a family and that can look in all kinds of family and that can look in all kinds of family and that can look in all kinds of different ways. It could be uh your different ways. It could be uh your different ways. It could be uh your spouse and your kids. It could be spouse and your kids. It could be spouse and your kids. It could be grandparents, you with your grandkids.

Carve out the time that's necessary to do that and the time that's necessary to do that and the time that's necessary to do that and make it a priority. Make the space for make it a priority. Make the space for make it a priority. Make the space for it in your life. Service is important to it in your life. Service is important to it in your life. Service is important to us and our family. Uh, I think her made 8,000 sandwiches. Uh, I think her made 8,000 sandwiches. Uh, I think her and I made eight of those 8,000. Uh, but and I made eight of those 8,000. Uh, but and I made eight of those 8,000. Uh, but we were a part of the team. Um, and she we were a part of the team. Um, and she we were a part of the team. Um, and she for days after kept buzzing. She would for days after kept buzzing. She would for days after kept buzzing. She would tell people at HB, "Did you know we made tell people at HB, "Did you know we made tell people at HB, "Did you know we made 8,000 sandwiches the other day?" And she 8,000 sandwiches the other day?" And she 8,000 sandwiches the other day?" And she told her teacher at the first day of told her teacher at the first day of told her teacher at the first day of meet the teacher. She called in and papa meet the teacher. She called in and papa meet the teacher. She called in and papa and said, "Do you know we made 8,000 s?" and said, "Do you know we made 8,000 s?" and said, "Do you know we made 8,000 s?" I mean, she was just buzzing with I mean, she was just buzzing with I mean, she was just buzzing with excitement about this opportunity to excitement about this opportunity to excitement about this opportunity to serve. And what a better way to show serve. And what a better way to show serve. And what a better way to show your kids or your grandkids or or folks your kids or your grandkids or or folks your kids or your grandkids or or folks who are new to this faith the importance who are new to this faith the importance who are new to this faith the importance of it than by serving together. Right?

I think of the the faith that I grew up think of the the faith that I grew up think of the the faith that I grew up in. For my parents, it wasn't a question in. So what time were we going to Sunday. So what time were we going to Sunday. So what time were we going to go? would I go early with mom or early go? would I go early with mom or early go? would I go early with mom or early early with dad? And my dad would sign up early with dad? And my dad would sign up early with dad? And my dad would sign up for two or three jobs and I would for two or three jobs and I would for two or three jobs and I would obviously get one maybe two of those obviously get one maybe two of those obviously get one maybe two of those jobs that he signed up for. And but I jobs that he signed up for. And but I jobs that he signed up for. And but I also have fond memories. We'd come to also have fond memories. We'd come to also have fond memories. We'd come to the church and we would replace the air the church and we would replace the air the church and we would replace the air filters. the most unexciting job that filters. the most unexciting job that filters. the most unexciting job that you could think of. And so he was just sort of at the span. And so he was just sort of at the span. And so he was just sort of at the end of his rope. And tomorrow was his end of his rope. And can buy you a birthday cake." Right? And he thought like, "Really?" You know, he thought like, "Really?" You know, he thought like, "Really?" You know, he's sort of taken aback by that. He was he's sort of taken aback by that. He was he's sort of taken aback by that. He was like, "I'm unsure about getting in the like, "I'm unsure about getting in the like, "I'm unsure about getting in the car with this guy." And we got over to car with this guy." And we got over to car with this guy." And we got over to Walmart and we bought that cake. And I Walmart and we bought that cake. And I Walmart and we bought that cake. And I got someone who was crafty to maybe wrap got someone who was crafty to maybe wrap got someone who was crafty to maybe wrap up some of those gifts. And and he told up some of those gifts. And so someone had just donated some shoes that someone had just donated some shoes that someone had just donated some shoes that that in God's timing were his size that that in God's timing were his size that that in God's timing were his size that we gave to him so he could have a new we gave to him so he could have a new we gave to him so he could have a new pair of shoes for his interview. And in one of those moments, we just had that kind of those moments, we just had that kind of those moments, we just had that kind of hug with tears in both of our eyes. And I prayed for him and I look back at that I prayed for him and I look back at that I prayed for him and I look back at that and I think I don't remember what sermon and I think I don't remember what sermon and I think I don't remember what sermon I was writing.
