Uh Philip Yansy in his book, Uh Philip Yansy in his book, Uh Philip Yansy in his book, Disappointment with God says this, "True Disappointment with God says this, "True Disappointment with God says this, "True atheists atheists atheists do not, I presume, feel disappointed do not, I presume, feel disappointed do not, I presume, feel disappointed with God. They expect nothing and with God. They expect nothing and with God. They expect nothing and receive nothing.

What is it that we expect? What is it that we expect? What is it that we expect? So the scholars have uh done a good bit So the scholars have uh done a good bit So the scholars have uh done a good bit of research on what some of the scholars of research on what some of the scholars of research on what some of the scholars believe might have been the case for um believe might have been the case for um believe might have been the case for um these four fishermen that would would uh these four fishermen that would would uh these four fishermen that would would uh um lead them to up and leave. Anything west of the Galilee of the Jordan River is um and Galilee of the Jordan River is um and Galilee of the Jordan River is um and and north of Judea is um and Samaria is and north of Judea is um and Samaria is and north of Judea is um and Samaria is Galilee. And it was a hotbed of Jewish Galilee. And it was a hotbed of Jewish Galilee. And it was a hotbed of Jewish resistance. And this is a very rural resistance. And this is a very rural resistance. And this is a very rural area. and the Zealots uh and other area. and the Zealots uh and other area. and the Zealots uh and other militias, Jewish militias operated there militias, Jewish militias operated there militias, Jewish militias operated there um without uh a lot of resistance from

um without uh a lot of resistance from um without uh a lot of resistance from the Roman government at first. It wasn't the Roman government at first. It wasn't the Roman government at first. It wasn't until 40 years after that that really until 40 years after that that really until 40 years after that that really they stamped out the Zealot resistance they stamped out the Zealot resistance they stamped out the Zealot resistance throughout Galilee. So just imagine and throughout Galilee. So just imagine and throughout Galilee. So just imagine and they would operate like a little they would operate like a little they would operate like a little criminal gangs. They would how did they criminal gangs. They would how did they criminal gangs. They would how did they fund their work? Well, they would charge fund their work? Well, they would charge fund their work? Well, they would charge these road taxes that as people walked these road taxes that as people walked these road taxes that as people walked through this is what so the the Roman through this is what so the the Roman through this is what so the the Roman government would also do this, but the government would also do this, but the government would also do this, but the Zealots would set up these little Zealots would set up these little Zealots would set up these little stations and say, "Hey, you want to get stations and say, "Hey, you want to get stations and say, "Hey, you want to get by here? We're going to charge you." by here? We're going to charge you." by here? We're going to charge you." There are some believe that that when There are some believe that that when There are some believe that that when the scripture says, and there were two the scripture says, and there were two the scripture says, and there were two criminals crucified next to Jesus on the criminals crucified next to Jesus on the criminals crucified next to Jesus on the cross, that the word for criminal there cross, that the word for criminal there cross, that the word for criminal there is a word for a a Jewish zealot that's is a word for a a Jewish zealot that's is a word for a a Jewish zealot that's being uh crucified. that was going on being uh crucified. that was going on being uh crucified. that was going on all throughout Galilee. all throughout Galilee. all throughout Galilee. Let can we can we sit at your hand? Let can we can we sit at your hand? Let can we can we sit at your right and left hand when you come into right and left hand when you come into right and left hand when you come into your kingdom?" It's a a a focus on a your kingdom?" It's a a a focus on a sense of you're going to be ruling sense of you're going to be ruling sense of you're going to be ruling things and I I want to get to be a part things and I I want to get to be a part things and I I want to get to be a part of this. They're looking for some sense of this. They're looking for some sense of this. They're looking for some sense of earthly power. Even after the of earthly power. Even after the of earthly power. Even after the crucifixion and resurrection, crucifixion and resurrection, crucifixion and resurrection, um Jesus Jesus in Acts um Jesus Jesus in Acts um Jesus Jesus in Acts when when when they say when Jesus appears, is now the they say when Jesus appears, is now the they say when Jesus appears, is now the time you're going to restore Israel? But I will say that it is there is not really a lot say that it is there is not really a lot say that it is there is not really a lot of difference between believing that of difference between believing that of difference between believing that somehow uh Christians should rule somehow uh Christians should rule somehow uh Christians should rule politically than believing that Jews politically than believing that Jews politically than believing that Jews should rule politically. And this would be the promised time joy. And this would be the promised time joy. And this would be the promised time when according to Acts 25 that they when according to Acts 25 that they when according to Acts 25 that they would beat their swords into pruning would beat their swords into pruning would beat their swords into pruning shears and study war no more. This was going to be that that wonderful This was going to be that that wonderful This was going to be that that wonderful time and they they when Jesus says the time and they they when Jesus says the time and they they when Jesus says the kingdom of God has come near, he's kingdom of God has come near, he's kingdom of God has come near, he's saying, "Hey, that time has begun and saying, "Hey, that time has begun and saying, "Hey, that time has begun and you're going to see some miracles you're going to see some miracles you're going to see some miracles is what they might have understood and is what they might have understood and is what they might have understood and interpreted." And so they would come through there and the the Roman garrison was there and the the Roman garrison was there and the the Roman garrison was there to charge customs taxes as the uh there to charge customs taxes as the uh there to charge customs taxes as the uh trade people came through. And so Jesus trade people came through. And so Jesus trade people came through. And so Jesus sets Capernaum up as his home as his sets Capernaum up as his home as his sets Capernaum up as his home as his home territory. And it's there that he home territory. If you go to Capernaum, you can see uh how you go to Capernaum, you can see uh how you go to Capernaum, you can see uh how sort of dense it was. the the um the sort of dense it was. the the um the sort of dense it was. the the um the families all lived in these compounds families all lived in these compounds families all lived in these compounds uh that were you know room after room uh that were you know room after room uh that were you know room after room after room after room and different after room after room and different after room after room and different families from the larger family would families from the larger family would families from the larger family would live in those various rooms. That's how live in those various rooms. That's how live in those various rooms. That's where the hungry were fed and and the sick the hungry were fed and and the sick the hungry were fed and and the sick were healed and the lepers were were were healed and the lepers were were were healed and the lepers were were made clean and the demons were cast out made clean and the demons were cast out made clean and the demons were cast out and the sea even and the sea even and the sea even uh um responded to Jesus call and those uh um responded to Jesus call and those uh um responded to Jesus call and those miracles. miracles. miracles. Uh the perhaps that's what they were Uh the perhaps that's what they were Uh the perhaps that's what they were looking for.

Right? We we I think we've grown used to Right? We we I think we've grown used to Right? We we I think we've grown used to the fact that we don't see those the fact that we don't see those the fact that we don't see those miraculous healings around us all the miraculous healings around us all the miraculous healings around us all the time. But when it gets personal, when it time. But when it gets personal, when it time. But when it gets personal, when it gets personal, we we turn to that, don't gets personal, we we turn to that, don't gets personal, we we turn to that, don't we? We pray to God. God, when when we? God, when when someone we love is sick, when we are at someone we love is sick, when we are at someone we love is sick, when we are at our end, at our wit's end, we pray, God, our end, at our wit's end, we pray, God, our end, at our wit's end, we pray, God, just come in and do this. And we have that um that that desire And we have that um that that desire And we have that um that that desire that somehow that somehow that somehow we in fact will experience that we in fact will experience that we in fact will experience that incredible miracle that those early incredible miracle that those early incredible miracle that those early disciples did. disciples did. disciples did. I one of the things I found in ministry I one of the things I found in ministry I one of the things I found in ministry is that that sort of underlying our is that that sort of underlying our is that that sort of underlying our decision to be a follower of Jesus to decision to be a follower of Jesus to decision to be a follower of Jesus to lead to do our best to lead a righteous lead to do our best to lead a righteous lead to do our best to lead a righteous life is that there's sort of a for a life is that there's sort of a for a life is that there's sort of a for a lack of a better word that's the only lack of a better word that's the only lack of a better word that's the only thing I can come up with. There's sort thing I can come up with. There's sort thing I can come up with. There's sort of a Christian karma that goes in our of a Christian karma that goes in our of a Christian karma that goes in our heads that is look I'm I'm living a good heads that is look I'm I'm living a good heads that is look I'm I'm living a good life. I'm doing the best that I can. I life. I'm doing the best that I can. I life. I'm doing the best that I can. I really am. And so people will say to me, really am. And so people will say to me, really am. And so people will say to me, why would God why would God let this

I'm I'm doing I'm trying to do my best to live that kind trying to do my best to live that kind trying to do my best to live that kind of life. of life. of life. I think sometimes we we choose to be I think sometimes we we choose to be I think sometimes we we choose to be followers of Christ because we we at followers of Christ because we we at followers of Christ because we we at least are reaching for least are reaching for least are reaching for um a a life that turns out better for us um a a life that turns out better for us um a a life that turns out better for us because we think if we live that way because we think if we live that way because we think if we live that way then life might go better. Here's the here's the third possibility Here's the here's the third possibility that um what they were looking for was that um what they were looking for was that um what they were looking for was heaven heaven heaven that they that they what that the reason that they that they what that the reason that they that they what that the reason they signed on was that really what they they signed on was that really what they they signed on was that really what they wanted to do was live eternally. Now it it's a common misconception that the it's a common misconception that the it's a common misconception that the early that the Jews at the time of Jesus early that the Jews at the time of Jesus early that the Jews at the time of Jesus did not believe in eternal life. Um there was the Pharisees and the Um there was the Pharisees and the Um there was the Pharisees and the Pharisees believed in a final um uh Pharisees believed in a final um uh Pharisees believed in a final um uh resurrection that there would be a day resurrection that there would be a day resurrection that there would be a day when uh the dead shall rise again. uh when uh the dead shall rise again. uh when uh the dead shall rise again. uh the Pharisees believed that there were the Pharisees believed that there were the Pharisees believed that there were the Essenes who had withdrawn uh to the the Essenes who had withdrawn uh to the the Essenes who had withdrawn uh to the desert and they believed that the soul desert and they believed that the soul desert and they believed that the soul they had a significant amount of Greek they had a significant amount of Greek they had a significant amount of Greek influence and they believed that the influence and they believed that the influence and they believed that the soul was immortal and that when we die soul was immortal and that when we die soul was immortal and that when we die there's a time of purification and then there's a time of purification and then there's a time of purification and then we spend time in bliss in a heavenly we spend time in bliss in a heavenly we spend time in bliss in a heavenly place. The Sadducees on the other hand place. The Sadducees on the other hand place. The Sadducees on the other hand did not believe in eternal life and did did not believe in eternal life and did did not believe in eternal life and did not believe in resurrection. And that's not believe in resurrection. And that's not believe in resurrection. And that's why we that's why we here's how you why we that's why we here's how you why we that's why we here's how you remember that. That's why they were sad. remember that. That's why they were sad. remember that. That's why they were sad. You see, uh right u they were sades. You see, uh right u they were sades. You see, uh right u they were sades. They did not believe in that. So some They did not believe in that. So some They did not believe in that. So some some think that it was in fact that what some think that it was in fact that what some think that it was in fact that what they were believing in was that that you they were believing in was that that you they were believing in was that that you know what they're going to give know what they're going to give know what they're going to give themselves to follow this Messiah and themselves to follow this Messiah and themselves to follow this Messiah and that would lead their righteous life that would lead their righteous life that would lead their righteous life would lead them to a place in heaven.

We might not expect what we expect. We might not expect what we expect. We might not expect anything in this life. We might not anything in this life. We might not anything in this life. We might not expect our life to go any better. We expect our life to go any better. We expect our life to go any better. We might not like expect us to have any might not like expect us to have any might not like expect us to have any kind of earthly power, but we think that kind of earthly power, but we think that kind of earthly power, but we think that in our afterlife that when we die that in our afterlife that when we die that in our afterlife that when we die that we'll be with Jesus we'll be with Jesus we'll be with Jesus and ah there is maybe that's just and ah there is maybe that's just and ah there is maybe that's just enough. enough. enough. Isn't that I mean when you're sitting Isn't that I mean when you're sitting Isn't that I mean when you're sitting and facing death that's that's the thing and facing death that's that's the thing and facing death that's that's the thing that in fact gives you the greatest that in fact gives you the greatest that in fact gives you the greatest comfort. Whether it w when someone you comfort. Whether it w when someone you comfort. Whether it w when someone you love has passed away, it's the one thing love has passed away, it's the one thing love has passed away, it's the one thing that gives you the greatest comfort. that gives you the greatest comfort. that gives you the greatest comfort. Maybe that's enough. Maybe that's enough. Maybe that's enough. But I will tell you this, I think, you But I will tell you this, I think, you But I will tell you this, I think, you know, the scripture tells us that we're know, the scripture tells us that we're know, the scripture tells us that we're justified by faith justified by faith justified by faith um by grace through faith. um by grace through faith. um by grace through faith. But but when we read Jesus teaching it But but when we read Jesus teaching it But but when we read Jesus teaching it it's he says not everyone who says Lord it's he says not everyone who says Lord it's he says not everyone who says Lord Lord will enter the kingdom of God but Lord will enter the kingdom of God but Lord will enter the kingdom of God but only the one who does the will of my only the one who does the will of my only the one who does the will of my heavenly father.

He he says well sell what you have give your money to sell what you have give your money to sell what you have give your money to the poor and follow me. the poor and follow me. the poor and follow me. or um g the Jesus tells the parable of or um g the Jesus tells the parable of or um g the Jesus tells the parable of the sheep and the goats and the goats the sheep and the goats and the goats the sheep and the goats and the goats were the one who didn't give a a glass were the one who didn't give a a glass were the one who didn't give a a glass of cold water or feed the hungry or of cold water or feed the hungry or of cold water or feed the hungry or clothe the naked and the sheep were the clothe the naked and the sheep were the clothe the naked and the sheep were the ones who did and the goats get cast into ones who did and the goats get cast into ones who did and the goats get cast into eternal darkness. So we live with this eternal darkness. So we live with this eternal darkness. So we live with this sense of yes, we're going to believe in sense of yes, we're going to believe in sense of yes, we're going to believe in Jesus. I'm going to be a believer in Jesus. I'm going to be a believer in Jesus. I'm going to be a believer in Jesus. Jesus. Jesus. But the call on our life is to be a But the call on our life is to be a But the call on our life is to be a follower of Jesus, not just a believer follower of Jesus, not just a believer follower of Jesus, not just a believer in Jesus. in Jesus. in Jesus. And so we have to we we we hold fast to And so we have to we we we hold fast to And so we have to we we we hold fast to that. And when we make a decision to be that. And when we make a decision to be that. And when we make a decision to be a follower of Jesus, we can take um we a follower of Jesus, we can take um we a follower of Jesus, we can take um we can uh take the joy of knowing that can uh take the joy of knowing that can uh take the joy of knowing that indeed there is heaven and that this indeed there is heaven and that this indeed there is heaven and that this life is not all there is.

So I've been thinking to myself, why did So I've been thinking to myself, why did So I've been thinking to myself, why did I why did I decide to be a follower of I why did I decide to be a follower of I why did I decide to be a follower of Jesus? Jesus? Jesus? And this fourth reason is really I think And this fourth reason is really I think And this fourth reason is really I think the the main one and it's the one that the the main one and it's the one that the the main one and it's the one that resonates most with me resonates most with me resonates most with me because uh what they expected was to because uh what they expected was to because uh what they expected was to live a transformed and meaningful life. live a transformed and meaningful life. live a transformed and meaningful life. I can imagine the drudgery of commercial imagine the drudgery of commercial imagine the drudgery of commercial fishing day after day, day after day, fishing day after day, day after day, fishing day after day, day after day, day after day. I keep thinking of that day after day. I keep thinking of that day after day. I keep thinking of that of that um Cat Stevens song that uh I of that um Cat Stevens song that uh I of that um Cat Stevens song that uh I sang when I was a younger person. Um I sang when I was a younger person. Um I sang when I was a younger person. Um I don't want to work. It's called Father don't want to work. It's called Father don't want to work. It's called Father and Son. I don't want to work away doing and Son. I don't want to work away doing and Son. I don't want to work away doing what they all say, work hard, boy. One what they all say, work hard, boy. One what they all say, work hard, boy. One day you'll find you have a job like day you'll find you have a job like day you'll find you have a job like mine. Um I don't want to be that mine. Um I don't want to be that mine. Um I don't want to be that and I want to live a meaningful life. and I want to live a meaningful life. and I want to live a meaningful life. And Jesus says to them, "Repent, live a And Jesus says to them, "Repent, live a And Jesus says to them, "Repent, live a different way and I'll make you fishers different way and I'll make you fishers different way and I'll make you fishers of men. I'll give you a meaning. I'll of men. I'll give you a meaning. I'll of men. I'll give you a meaning. I'll give you a purpose. I'll give you to be give you a purpose. I'll give you to be give you a purpose. I'll give you to be a part of something greater than a part of something greater than a part of something greater than yourself. I'll give you the opportunity yourself. I'll give you the opportunity yourself. I'll give you the opportunity to be a part of my work, Jesus says. And to be a part of my work, Jesus says. And to be a part of my work, Jesus says. And they're like, yes, that's what I'm they're like, yes, that's what I'm they're like, yes, that's what I'm looking for. I want a different life. I looking for. I want a different life. I looking for. I want a different life. I want a life that's transformed, that has want a life that's transformed, that has want a life that's transformed, that has meaning.

And when we make that decision, when so And when we make that decision, when so I came to Christ first to experience I came to Christ first to experience I came to Christ first to experience community, I was loved into the kingdom. community, I was loved into the kingdom. community, I was loved into the kingdom. And that in and of itself is a life of And that in and of itself is a life of And that in and of itself is a life of meaning. Is those relationships of meaning. Is those relationships of meaning. Is those relationships of people around us that we care about and people around us that we care about and people around us that we care about and they care about us. they care about us. they care about us. We're offered that opportunity.
