It's quite literally a conversation. And It's quite literally a conversation. And It's quite literally a conversation. And as you'll hear as you'll hear as you'll hear >> [music] >> [music] >> [music] >> in the the conversation that we have >> in the the conversation that we have >> in the the conversation that we have today, today, today, it's really reminiscent of of Job, but it's really reminiscent of of Job, but it's really reminiscent of of Job, but also of Psalms. also of Psalms. also of Psalms. My name is Jason Weiland and this is My name is Jason Weiland and this is My name is Jason Weiland and this is Doable Discipleship Doable Discipleship Doable Discipleship >> [music] >> [music] >> [music] >> navigating the Bible. >> navigating the Bible. >> navigating the Bible. Habakkuk. >> All right, I'm joined by Ken Turner >> All right, I'm joined by Ken Turner who's going to help us navigate the who's going to help us navigate the who's going to help us navigate the waters of Habakkuk today. Ken, thanks waters of Habakkuk today. Ken, thanks waters of Habakkuk today. Ken, thanks for being here. I appreciate it. for being here. I appreciate it. for being here. I appreciate it. Thanks. Great to be here. Uh okay, so so Thanks. Great to be here. Uh okay, so so Thanks. Great to be here. Uh okay, so so we've been going through these minor we've been going through these minor we've been going through these minor prophets and then we get to Habakkuk and prophets and then we get to Habakkuk and prophets and then we get to Habakkuk and we see that it reads a little bit we see that it reads a little bit we see that it reads a little bit differently than any of the others that differently than any of the others that differently than any of the others that we've read up to this point. So I'm we've read up to this point. So I'm we've read up to this point. So I'm excited to dive into this one. I think excited to dive into this one. I think excited to dive into this one. I think it's one that a lot of people probably it's one that a lot of people probably it's one that a lot of people probably know a little bit of. Um you know, they know a little bit of. Um you know, they know a little bit of. Um you know, they think about the watchtower, they think think about the watchtower, they think think about the watchtower, they think about these these ideas from Habakkuk. about these these ideas from Habakkuk. about these these ideas from Habakkuk. So I'm excited to dive into those with So I'm excited to dive into those with So I'm excited to dive into those with you. Let's start with the basic details, you. Let's start with the basic details, you. Let's start with the basic details, get our feet set before us, if you will. get our feet set before us, if you will. get our feet set before us, if you will. So, So, So, do we know who wrote the book of do we know who wrote the book of do we know who wrote the book of Habakkuk and maybe Habakkuk and maybe Habakkuk and maybe when it was written and how does knowing when it was written and how does knowing when it was written and how does knowing these things affect how we read the these things affect how we read the these things affect how we read the book?

  4. book? book? Yeah, well, in in my understanding, Yeah, well, in in my understanding, Yeah, well, in in my understanding, every book of the Old Testament is every book of the Old Testament is every book of the Old Testament is formally anonymous. Yeah. Uh we don't formally anonymous. Yeah. Uh we don't formally anonymous. Yeah. Uh we don't really when we think about authors and really when we think about authors and really when we think about authors and books, uh books, uh books, uh we can't we can't we can't we can't think about the ancient world we can't think about the ancient world we can't think about the ancient world the same way we think about books and the same way we think about books and the same way we think about books and authors today. authors today. authors today. Um and the prophets especially, there's Um and the prophets especially, there's Um and the prophets especially, there's a lot of evidence that at least many of a lot of evidence that at least many of a lot of evidence that at least many of the prophets the prophets the prophets could have been edited and rearranged um could have been edited and rearranged um could have been edited and rearranged um perhaps even for centuries. perhaps even for centuries. perhaps even for centuries. >> Sure. Now, we don't in [clears throat] >> Sure. Now, we don't in [clears throat] >> Sure. Now, we don't in [clears throat] Habakkuk itself, it doesn't really Habakkuk itself, it doesn't really Habakkuk itself, it doesn't really matter. Yeah. This could come straight matter. Yeah. This could come straight matter. Yeah. This could come straight from the prophet or one of his from the prophet or one of his from the prophet or one of his disciples. There is there's obvious um disciples. There is there's obvious um disciples. There is there's obvious um evidence of of some type of editing evidence of of some type of editing evidence of of some type of editing process. Uh there's no reason to think process. Uh there's no reason to think process. Uh there's no reason to think it couldn't have come pretty soon after it couldn't have come pretty soon after it couldn't have come pretty soon after Habakkuk's own lifetime, but it really Habakkuk's own lifetime, but it really Habakkuk's own lifetime, but it really doesn't matter because um if there were doesn't matter because um if there were doesn't matter because um if there were other hands like disciples involved, other hands like disciples involved, other hands like disciples involved, they would have been they would have been they would have been people who understood him and his heart people who understood him and his heart people who understood him and his heart and of course we chalk all this up to and of course we chalk all this up to and of course we chalk all this up to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit the inspiration of the Holy Spirit the inspiration of the Holy Spirit anyway. anyway. anyway. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Yeah.

  5. Yeah. Yeah. I I do we know when in the timeline this I I do we know when in the timeline this I I do we know when in the timeline this this specific message to Habakkuk may this specific message to Habakkuk may this specific message to Habakkuk may have taken place? have taken place? have taken place? Yeah, so when I think big picture with Yeah, so when I think big picture with Yeah, so when I think big picture with my students, I think you can kind of put my students, I think you can kind of put my students, I think you can kind of put all the prophets in three large buckets. all the prophets in three large buckets. all the prophets in three large buckets. Like you've got those around the time Like you've got those around the time Like you've got those around the time when Assyria is in charge. when Assyria is in charge. when Assyria is in charge. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. Uh during the divided kingdom, so you Uh during the divided kingdom, so you Uh during the divided kingdom, so you think about Amos and Hosea and Jonah and think about Amos and Hosea and Jonah and think about Amos and Hosea and Jonah and Isaiah and Micah. Isaiah and Micah. Isaiah and Micah. And then uh Habakkuk fits in that kind And then uh Habakkuk fits in that kind And then uh Habakkuk fits in that kind of middle portion which is kind of up of middle portion which is kind of up of middle portion which is kind of up around the time of the Babylonian exile around the time of the Babylonian exile around the time of the Babylonian exile in the late um 6th century. in the late um 6th century. in the late um 6th century. And Habakkuk definitely fits in there. And Habakkuk definitely fits in there. And Habakkuk definitely fits in there. Of course then we've got a few that are Of course then we've got a few that are Of course then we've got a few that are in the post-exilic period under Persia. in the post-exilic period under Persia. in the post-exilic period under Persia. But Habakkuk is definitely within that But Habakkuk is definitely within that But Habakkuk is definitely within that that middle section. So you're talking that middle section. So you're talking that middle section. So you're talking alongside the big boys like Jeremiah and alongside the big boys like Jeremiah and alongside the big boys like Jeremiah and Ezekiel. You're talking about um Ezekiel. You're talking about um Ezekiel. You're talking about um Zephaniah and probably Obadiah, perhaps Zephaniah and probably Obadiah, perhaps Zephaniah and probably Obadiah, perhaps Joel, perhaps some of them we're not Joel, perhaps some of them we're not Joel, perhaps some of them we're not really sure about, but really sure about, but really sure about, but >> Sure. uh >> Sure. uh >> Sure. uh I would go even more particular that I would go even more particular that I would go even more particular that we're we're looking at probably that we're we're looking at probably that we're we're looking at probably that last decade last decade last decade of the 7th century. Uh King Josiah dies of the 7th century. Uh King Josiah dies of the 7th century. Uh King Josiah dies in 609 BC. Nebuchadnezzar comes in 605 in 609 BC. Nebuchadnezzar comes in 605 in 609 BC. Nebuchadnezzar comes in 605 BC. And in my mind there's evidence that BC. And in my mind there's evidence that BC. And in my mind there's evidence that some of this comes before Nebuchadnezzar some of this comes before Nebuchadnezzar some of this comes before Nebuchadnezzar comes and some comes after. So I think comes and some comes after. So I think comes and some comes after. So I think we can actually locate the decade. Mhm.

  6. we can actually locate the decade. Mhm. we can actually locate the decade. Mhm. Um and a lot of it has to do with the Um and a lot of it has to do with the Um and a lot of it has to do with the aftermath of King Josiah's untimely aftermath of King Josiah's untimely aftermath of King Josiah's untimely death which gives you some of the death which gives you some of the death which gives you some of the personal negative nature of what's personal negative nature of what's personal negative nature of what's happening in the book. Sure. So then happening in the book. Sure. So then happening in the book. Sure. So then let's get into the meat of the book let's get into the meat of the book let's get into the meat of the book itself and I itself and I itself and I I get to ask my favorite question of the I get to ask my favorite question of the I get to ask my favorite question of the whole thing. whole thing. whole thing. How would you describe the book of How would you describe the book of How would you describe the book of Habakkuk in one sentence? Habakkuk is about a man, the prophet Habakkuk is about a man, the prophet Habakkuk, who really is on his own Habakkuk, who really is on his own Habakkuk, who really is on his own journey of faith. Mhm. And so while it journey of faith. Mhm. And so while it journey of faith. Mhm. And so while it is a prophetic book, we get a personal is a prophetic book, we get a personal is a prophetic book, we get a personal glimpse at the man glimpse at the man glimpse at the man who's not just a prophet but also a who's not just a prophet but also a who's not just a prophet but also a believer. And that's what partly partly believer. And that's what partly partly believer. And that's what partly partly of what makes this stand out among the of what makes this stand out among the of what makes this stand out among the prophetic books. Well, yeah it it prophetic books. Well, yeah it it prophetic books. Well, yeah it it definitely stands out. definitely stands out. definitely stands out. As I mentioned at the beginning, it As I mentioned at the beginning, it As I mentioned at the beginning, it reads differently than the other books reads differently than the other books reads differently than the other books of the prophets. And you can't help but of the prophets. And you can't help but of the prophets. And you can't help but look at it and and think of like the look at it and and think of like the look at it and and think of like the last few chapters of Job where he has last few chapters of Job where he has last few chapters of Job where he has this complaint this complaint this complaint >> Yeah. and then the Lord responds. Job >> Yeah. and then the Lord responds. Job >> Yeah. and then the Lord responds. Job then says something then the Lord then says something then the Lord then says something then the Lord responds. It takes on a similar responds. It takes on a similar responds. It takes on a similar structure to those last few chapters. So structure to those last few chapters. So structure to those last few chapters. So and again, very different than what and again, very different than what and again, very different than what we've seen typically which out of the we've seen typically which out of the we've seen typically which out of the prophets we we typically just see prophets we we typically just see prophets we we typically just see God give the prophet a message of doom God give the prophet a message of doom God give the prophet a message of doom and gloom for you know, a people or lots and gloom for you know, a people or lots and gloom for you know, a people or lots of different people. In this case it's of different people. In this case it's of different people. In this case it's it's not quite like that. It's a little

  7. it's not quite like that. It's a little it's not quite like that. It's a little bit different. So let's talk about the bit different. So let's talk about the bit different. So let's talk about the flow of this book. What happens over the flow of this book. What happens over the flow of this book. What happens over the course of this book? It's not a long course of this book? It's not a long course of this book? It's not a long book. It's three chapters. So what book. It's three chapters. So what book. It's three chapters. So what happens from chapter 1 through the end happens from chapter 1 through the end happens from chapter 1 through the end of chapter 3? of chapter 3? of chapter 3? Yeah, so and just to follow up on what Yeah, so and just to follow up on what Yeah, so and just to follow up on what you just said, Habakkuk actually never you just said, Habakkuk actually never you just said, Habakkuk actually never speaks to an audience Yeah. [laughter] speaks to an audience Yeah. [laughter] speaks to an audience Yeah. [laughter] other than God Yeah, it's just a other than God Yeah, it's just a other than God Yeah, it's just a conversation. Yeah. even though he's conversation. Yeah. even though he's conversation. Yeah. even though he's fulfilling a prophetic role. Yeah, it it fulfilling a prophetic role. Yeah, it it fulfilling a prophetic role. Yeah, it it begins clearly there's something going begins clearly there's something going begins clearly there's something going wrong in Judah among the people of God wrong in Judah among the people of God wrong in Judah among the people of God cuz cuz cuz we get Habakkuk's initial complaint we get Habakkuk's initial complaint we get Habakkuk's initial complaint about God being silent in the midst of about God being silent in the midst of about God being silent in the midst of uh various forms of injustice that he's uh various forms of injustice that he's uh various forms of injustice that he's witnessing witnessing witnessing and he clearly has a problem that God and he clearly has a problem that God and he clearly has a problem that God isn't stepping into that. isn't stepping into that. isn't stepping into that. The problem is God's answer is a The problem is God's answer is a The problem is God's answer is a non-answer cuz he basically makes things non-answer cuz he basically makes things non-answer cuz he basically makes things worse. So the middle of chapter 1, God worse. So the middle of chapter 1, God worse. So the middle of chapter 1, God says you haven't seen anything yet and says you haven't seen anything yet and says you haven't seen anything yet and that's when he declares he's going to that's when he declares he's going to that's when he declares he's going to send the Babylonians. send the Babylonians. send the Babylonians. And so the first chapter ends with a And so the first chapter ends with a And so the first chapter ends with a follow-up complaint by Habakkuk and he's follow-up complaint by Habakkuk and he's follow-up complaint by Habakkuk and he's almost off the rails by the end of almost off the rails by the end of almost off the rails by the end of chapter 1 cuz he just does not chapter 1 cuz he just does not chapter 1 cuz he just does not understand how what God is is doing understand how what God is is doing understand how what God is is doing matches with his own character.

  8. matches with his own character. matches with his own character. Um and then we have a nice little shift Um and then we have a nice little shift Um and then we have a nice little shift in chapter 2 in chapter 2 in chapter 2 with the watchtower verse with the watchtower verse with the watchtower verse where there's different ways to where there's different ways to where there's different ways to interpret that verse, but I I find again interpret that verse, but I I find again interpret that verse, but I I find again in this kind of movement of faith, in this kind of movement of faith, in this kind of movement of faith, uh I find Habakkuk being resolved to uh I find Habakkuk being resolved to uh I find Habakkuk being resolved to continue his prophetic work continue his prophetic work continue his prophetic work even though he personally he still has even though he personally he still has even though he personally he still has these struggles with God. So there these struggles with God. So there these struggles with God. So there there's a it's a nice there's a it's a nice there's a it's a nice sign of his faithfulness to continue in sign of his faithfulness to continue in sign of his faithfulness to continue in his ministry his ministry his ministry despite him still having these despite him still having these despite him still having these theological personal problems. And so theological personal problems. And so theological personal problems. And so there's so much good application there. there's so much good application there. there's so much good application there. And eventually chapter 2 starts talking And eventually chapter 2 starts talking And eventually chapter 2 starts talking about about about this vision of how God's going to divide this vision of how God's going to divide this vision of how God's going to divide the world not necessarily along ethnic the world not necessarily along ethnic the world not necessarily along ethnic lines about but those who lines about but those who lines about but those who trust in God and believe in his vision. trust in God and believe in his vision. trust in God and believe in his vision. Um and so we get that famous passage in Um and so we get that famous passage in Um and so we get that famous passage in chapter 2 verse 4 which is picked up by chapter 2 verse 4 which is picked up by chapter 2 verse 4 which is picked up by Paul, the just shall live by faith. Paul, the just shall live by faith. Paul, the just shall live by faith. And of course that was the verse that And of course that was the verse that And of course that was the verse that Martin Luther was studying to Martin Luther was studying to Martin Luther was studying to to start the the Reformation.

  9. to start the the Reformation. to start the the Reformation. >> Yeah. But then we have a really >> Yeah. But then we have a really >> Yeah. But then we have a really interesting in in the in my commentary, interesting in in the in my commentary, interesting in in the in my commentary, I talk about it almost a halfway towards I talk about it almost a halfway towards I talk about it almost a halfway towards understanding the New Testament gospel understanding the New Testament gospel understanding the New Testament gospel because we have these foreigners, these because we have these foreigners, these because we have these foreigners, these others who are also being beaten up by others who are also being beaten up by others who are also being beaten up by the Babylonians, but they are going to the Babylonians, but they are going to the Babylonians, but they are going to be called upon to be called upon to be called upon to um send these complaints and taunts um send these complaints and taunts um send these complaints and taunts against Babylon and some of them look against Babylon and some of them look against Babylon and some of them look like they're going to join the people of like they're going to join the people of like they're going to join the people of God. Mhm. So it's not Jew versus God. Mhm. So it's not Jew versus God. Mhm. So it's not Jew versus Gentile. Uh God seems to be dividing Gentile. Uh God seems to be dividing Gentile. Uh God seems to be dividing humanity um, in ways that we think of of humanity um, in ways that we think of of humanity um, in ways that we think of of in terms of New Testament lines about in terms of New Testament lines about in terms of New Testament lines about believer versus non-believer and that believer versus non-believer and that believer versus non-believer and that that will come both within and and that will come both within and and that will come both within and and without uh, beyond the people of God. without uh, beyond the people of God. without uh, beyond the people of God. And we finish the book with this great And we finish the book with this great And we finish the book with this great theophany, these visions uh, the way God theophany, these visions uh, the way God theophany, these visions uh, the way God has acted in these great days in the has acted in these great days in the has acted in these great days in the past that there's this there's this past that there's this there's this past that there's this there's this prayer and song prayer and song prayer and song >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. that really much sounds like the book of that really much sounds like the book of that really much sounds like the book of Psalms. Even has some of the musical Psalms. Even has some of the musical Psalms. Even has some of the musical um, notations and but it yeah, there's a um, notations and but it yeah, there's a um, notations and but it yeah, there's a sense of trust even though they're about sense of trust even though they're about sense of trust even though they're about to be get hit hard by the Babylonians, to be get hit hard by the Babylonians, to be get hit hard by the Babylonians, there's a sense in that God is this there's a sense in that God is this there's a sense in that God is this won't be the final word. And so you end won't be the final word. And so you end won't be the final word. And so you end with with a real triumph of faith but it with with a real triumph of faith but it with with a real triumph of faith but it took a process for for Habakkuk to get took a process for for Habakkuk to get took a process for for Habakkuk to get to the end. And unfortunately to the end. And unfortunately to the end. And unfortunately a lot of Christians jump to the end, the a lot of Christians jump to the end, the a lot of Christians jump to the end, the happy parts, right?

  10. happy parts, right? happy parts, right? >> Yeah. But they don't allow themselves to >> Yeah. But they don't allow themselves to >> Yeah. But they don't allow themselves to go through the same process. So again, go through the same process. So again, go through the same process. So again, very much like Job that you had very much like Job that you had very much like Job that you had mentioned mentioned mentioned >> Yeah. Abraham Peter, we can think of all >> Yeah. Abraham Peter, we can think of all >> Yeah. Abraham Peter, we can think of all kinds of biblical characters who had to kinds of biblical characters who had to kinds of biblical characters who had to go through that process. go through that process. go through that process. Yeah, the other book that clearly comes Yeah, the other book that clearly comes Yeah, the other book that clearly comes to mind is Psalms which you mentioned. to mind is Psalms which you mentioned. to mind is Psalms which you mentioned. Especially in Especially in Especially in you start with the first verse of the or you start with the first verse of the or you start with the first verse of the or I'm sorry, I guess it it I'm sorry, I guess it it I'm sorry, I guess it it it's the second verse of the whole book. it's the second verse of the whole book. it's the second verse of the whole book. How long, oh Lord, must I call for help, How long, oh Lord, must I call for help, How long, oh Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen? That's like but you do not listen? That's like but you do not listen? That's like clearly a clearly a clearly a David psalm of lament calling out to David psalm of lament calling out to David psalm of lament calling out to God. And so it is God. And so it is God. And so it is we get this clear picture of this very we get this clear picture of this very we get this clear picture of this very a personal engagement that Habakkuk is a personal engagement that Habakkuk is a personal engagement that Habakkuk is going through in this conversation with going through in this conversation with going through in this conversation with God. He's just laying it bare. And it's God. He's just laying it bare. And it's God. He's just laying it bare. And it's a great example of what that looks like. a great example of what that looks like. a great example of what that looks like. We so often point to Psalms as examples We so often point to Psalms as examples We so often point to Psalms as examples of how we can bring our of how we can bring our of how we can bring our our worries and cares upon God. our worries and cares upon God. our worries and cares upon God. But Habakkuk is another great example of But Habakkuk is another great example of But Habakkuk is another great example of this man who's just calling out to God this man who's just calling out to God this man who's just calling out to God saying, why are you letting this happen?

  11. saying, why are you letting this happen? saying, why are you letting this happen? Aren't you going to do something about Aren't you going to do something about Aren't you going to do something about this? Are you going to wipe us out? You this? Are you going to wipe us out? You this? Are you going to wipe us out? You know, he he says at one point. And then know, he he says at one point. And then know, he he says at one point. And then we see the Lord's response. And so it's we see the Lord's response. And so it's we see the Lord's response. And so it's this like pretty interesting mixture of this like pretty interesting mixture of this like pretty interesting mixture of Job and Psalms, Job and Psalms, Job and Psalms, uh, which again, as you said, it takes uh, which again, as you said, it takes uh, which again, as you said, it takes us through then to that prayer in us through then to that prayer in us through then to that prayer in chapter 3 um, which is beautiful and chapter 3 um, which is beautiful and chapter 3 um, which is beautiful and it's it's it's written as a song, which is gorgeous. written as a song, which is gorgeous. written as a song, which is gorgeous. But again, you have to get to that But again, you have to get to that But again, you have to get to that point. That's the that's the capstone of point. That's the that's the capstone of point. That's the that's the capstone of the journey uh, that Habakkuk has gone the journey uh, that Habakkuk has gone the journey uh, that Habakkuk has gone on with God through this book. on with God through this book. on with God through this book. So let's then look at some of the themes So let's then look at some of the themes So let's then look at some of the themes that we see. What are some of the major that we see. What are some of the major that we see. What are some of the major themes in this book? themes in this book? themes in this book? Well, you certainly I mean, just Well, you certainly I mean, just Well, you certainly I mean, just theologically, certainly there's um, theologically, certainly there's um, theologically, certainly there's um, uh, a commitment to God's sovereignty uh, a commitment to God's sovereignty uh, a commitment to God's sovereignty um, and his holiness. So that's part of um, and his holiness. So that's part of um, and his holiness. So that's part of the tension, right? How can the tension, right? How can the tension, right? How can how can a God who's so pure and holy how can a God who's so pure and holy how can a God who's so pure and holy look upon such wickedness? look upon such wickedness? look upon such wickedness? >> Mhm. Um, >> Mhm. Um, >> Mhm. Um, you certainly have the bifurcation of you certainly have the bifurcation of you certainly have the bifurcation of human beings like I was saying in human beings like I was saying in human beings like I was saying in chapter 2. Um, a a long ways that sound chapter 2. Um, a a long ways that sound chapter 2. Um, a a long ways that sound more new covenant like in many ways. You more new covenant like in many ways. You more new covenant like in many ways. You have this this sense of like you just have this this sense of like you just have this this sense of like you just said with the Psalms, they're this idea said with the Psalms, they're this idea said with the Psalms, they're this idea that that that you know, so some of us come from church you know, so some of us come from church you know, so some of us come from church cultures that cultures that cultures that that complaining or lamenting is seen as that complaining or lamenting is seen as that complaining or lamenting is seen as a lack of faith.

  12. a lack of faith. a lack of faith. Mhm. Mhm. Mhm. >> And I think Habakkuk is many is one of >> And I think Habakkuk is many is one of >> And I think Habakkuk is many is one of many examples that says, no, true many examples that says, no, true many examples that says, no, true biblical Christianity allows people to biblical Christianity allows people to biblical Christianity allows people to go through that process. go through that process. go through that process. Um, it's not a lack of faith Um, it's not a lack of faith Um, it's not a lack of faith necessarily. It's not a lack of trust in necessarily. It's not a lack of trust in necessarily. It's not a lack of trust in God's sovereignty. God's sovereignty. God's sovereignty. But But But there's this personal working your way there's this personal working your way there's this personal working your way through it and through it and through it and uh, the idea that you can continue uh, the idea that you can continue uh, the idea that you can continue in your journey of faith even in your in your journey of faith even in your in your journey of faith even in your role as a prophet for Habakkuk you don't role as a prophet for Habakkuk you don't role as a prophet for Habakkuk you don't you don't go and close the door and get you don't go and close the door and get you don't go and close the door and get in the fetal position. Yeah. You can in the fetal position. Yeah. You can in the fetal position. Yeah. You can struggle while still being faithful in struggle while still being faithful in struggle while still being faithful in what God's called you to do. what God's called you to do. what God's called you to do. Um, so those are some of the big big Um, so those are some of the big big Um, so those are some of the big big themes that come away right away. themes that come away right away. themes that come away right away. Yeah, it it's these great reminders Yeah, it it's these great reminders Yeah, it it's these great reminders like we see in Psalms of saying, God, like we see in Psalms of saying, God, like we see in Psalms of saying, God, you are this. You are the rock. You are you are this. You are the rock. You are you are this. You are the rock. You are salvation. Like and it's it's this salvation. Like and it's it's this salvation. Like and it's it's this calling out saying, I'm not seeing that calling out saying, I'm not seeing that calling out saying, I'm not seeing that right now. I know this is true of you right now. I know this is true of you right now. I know this is true of you but I'm not seeing it. So it's this but I'm not seeing it. So it's this but I'm not seeing it. So it's this great look of and a couple questions we'll talk about and a couple questions we'll talk about what this book teaches us about what this book teaches us about what this book teaches us about ourselves, but it's this great look at ourselves, but it's this great look at ourselves, but it's this great look at holding these two things true. God, you holding these two things true. God, you holding these two things true. God, you are sovereign, so you are capable of are sovereign, so you are capable of are sovereign, so you are capable of doing this. I know you are. And yet it doing this. I know you are. And yet it doing this. I know you are. And yet it seems like you're choosing not to or seems like you're choosing not to or seems like you're choosing not to or feel like you're staying silent and and feel like you're staying silent and and feel like you're staying silent and and you respond to me in this way and your you respond to me in this way and your you respond to me in this way and your response isn't quite what I was response isn't quite what I was response isn't quite what I was picturing.

  13. picturing. picturing. And then we get the all these other And then we get the all these other And then we get the all these other pictures, too, of just what it means to pictures, too, of just what it means to pictures, too, of just what it means to be be be righteous. The righteous will live by righteous. The righteous will live by righteous. The righteous will live by their faithfulness to God, you pointed their faithfulness to God, you pointed their faithfulness to God, you pointed out out out earlier. earlier. earlier. I I I I I I I I I I wanted to highlight, too, uh, chapter I wanted to highlight, too, uh, chapter I wanted to highlight, too, uh, chapter 2:14. 2:14. 2:14. For as the waters fill the sea, the For as the waters fill the sea, the For as the waters fill the sea, the earth will be filled with an awareness earth will be filled with an awareness earth will be filled with an awareness of the glory of God. Like just this idea of the glory of God. Like just this idea of the glory of God. Like just this idea of God's reply being like, hey, I have a of God's reply being like, hey, I have a of God's reply being like, hey, I have a bigger plan than this. Like my glory is bigger plan than this. Like my glory is bigger plan than this. Like my glory is going to fill the earth. Everybody will going to fill the earth. Everybody will going to fill the earth. Everybody will know that I am the Lord. So I'm I'm know that I am the Lord. So I'm I'm know that I am the Lord. So I'm I'm looking bigger picture than you are, looking bigger picture than you are, looking bigger picture than you are, sir. sir. sir. Which again, harkens back to Job. I'm Which again, harkens back to Job. I'm Which again, harkens back to Job. I'm sorry, were you there when I was making sorry, were you there when I was making sorry, were you there when I was making the foundations of the earth? Were you the foundations of the earth? Were you the foundations of the earth? Were you there doing this stuff? So it's it's there doing this stuff? So it's it's there doing this stuff? So it's it's this great reminder that we so often this great reminder that we so often this great reminder that we so often need that God his ways are higher than need that God his ways are higher than need that God his ways are higher than ours. He's thinking in he's he's he's ours. He's thinking in he's he's he's ours. He's thinking in he's he's he's he's playing in a whole different like, he's playing in a whole different like, he's playing in a whole different like, you know, you know, you know, 5D chess and we're just doing our little 5D chess and we're just doing our little 5D chess and we're just doing our little board of you know, and so what looks board of you know, and so what looks board of you know, and so what looks like God's lack of movement or God's like God's lack of movement or God's like God's lack of movement or God's lack of engagement or care or love or lack of engagement or care or love or lack of engagement or care or love or awareness awareness awareness God's saying, that's not what this is.

  14. God's saying, that's not what this is. God's saying, that's not what this is. That's not what this is. That's not what this is. That's not what this is. Um, so I love that we see this in this Um, so I love that we see this in this Um, so I love that we see this in this book because again, we've been coming book because again, we've been coming book because again, we've been coming off of these other prophet books off of these other prophet books off of these other prophet books which is so focused on which is so focused on which is so focused on God's action of his sovereignty through God's action of his sovereignty through God's action of his sovereignty through and say and his act his his acting and say and his act his his acting and say and his act his his acting out of his justice of I am going to you out of his justice of I am going to you out of his justice of I am going to you know, bring know, bring know, bring a destruction and judgment because of a destruction and judgment because of a destruction and judgment because of the lack of repentance, because of the the lack of repentance, because of the the lack of repentance, because of the sin, because of all these stuff. This sin, because of all these stuff. This sin, because of all these stuff. This cannot continue to stand. And so I'm cannot continue to stand. And so I'm cannot continue to stand. And so I'm going to allow these things to happen. going to allow these things to happen. going to allow these things to happen. I'm going to allow Jerusalem to fall. I'm going to allow Jerusalem to fall. I'm going to allow Jerusalem to fall. I'm going to allow you know, all these I'm going to allow you know, all these I'm going to allow you know, all these things. things. things. And this is just this personal picture And this is just this personal picture And this is just this personal picture of this of this of this conversation and got and so we get a conversation and got and so we get a conversation and got and so we get a different picture of God's heart, which different picture of God's heart, which different picture of God's heart, which is a beautiful thing and it's a I think is a beautiful thing and it's a I think is a beautiful thing and it's a I think it's a it's a helpful and needed thing it's a it's a helpful and needed thing it's a it's a helpful and needed thing cuz it can be hard to sit with all these cuz it can be hard to sit with all these cuz it can be hard to sit with all these prophets for so long and just say prophets for so long and just say prophets for so long and just say you know, one book after another like you know, one book after another like you know, one book after another like this. So having a book like Habakkuk this. So having a book like Habakkuk this. So having a book like Habakkuk that really takes a kind of a different that really takes a kind of a different that really takes a kind of a different approach a different look at a approach a different look at a approach a different look at a a facet of God's heart is a welcome a facet of God's heart is a welcome a facet of God's heart is a welcome breath.

  15. breath. breath. Yeah, and I think what you just uh, Yeah, and I think what you just uh, Yeah, and I think what you just uh, there's debates among scholars of course there's debates among scholars of course there's debates among scholars of course on everything, but [laughter] on everything, but [laughter] on everything, but [laughter] Everything. I just want to reaffirm what Everything. I just want to reaffirm what Everything. I just want to reaffirm what you just said, um, you just said, um, you just said, um, there are a lot of scholars who try to there are a lot of scholars who try to there are a lot of scholars who try to uh, interpret Habakkuk along the lines uh, interpret Habakkuk along the lines uh, interpret Habakkuk along the lines of Jeremiah of Jeremiah of Jeremiah where Babylon is seen as God's minister where Babylon is seen as God's minister where Babylon is seen as God's minister of judgment against Judah. Mhm. But I of judgment against Judah. Mhm. But I of judgment against Judah. Mhm. But I actually don't think that is what actually don't think that is what actually don't think that is what Habakkuk focuses on. After the first Habakkuk focuses on. After the first Habakkuk focuses on. After the first four verses, his first complaint his four verses, his first complaint his four verses, his first complaint his mind isn't even on just Judah. It's on mind isn't even on just Judah. It's on mind isn't even on just Judah. It's on the whole world. And the whole world. And the whole world. And his problem I think actually Habakkuk his problem I think actually Habakkuk his problem I think actually Habakkuk wouldn't have complained as much if that wouldn't have complained as much if that wouldn't have complained as much if that was the answer. was the answer. was the answer. Now, that's biblical. Jeremiah talks Now, that's biblical. Jeremiah talks Now, that's biblical. Jeremiah talks that way. But Babylon in Habakkuk is that way. But Babylon in Habakkuk is that way. But Babylon in Habakkuk is he's just this he's personified as this he's just this he's personified as this he's just this he's personified as this wicked fisherman in this wicked fisherman in this wicked fisherman in this >> Yeah. this evil >> Yeah. this evil >> Yeah. this evil uh, person, right? The whole nation's uh, person, right? The whole nation's uh, person, right? The whole nation's considered a person here. But it's not considered a person here. But it's not considered a person here. But it's not that they're serving any form of that they're serving any form of that they're serving any form of justice. They're they're just ruthless justice. They're they're just ruthless justice. They're they're just ruthless and being allowed to devastate the whole and being allowed to devastate the whole and being allowed to devastate the whole world for no apparent reason. So it world for no apparent reason. So it world for no apparent reason. So it actually it's nice that even the actually it's nice that even the actually it's nice that even the prophets bring you different angles.

  16. prophets bring you different angles. prophets bring you different angles. Yeah, there's on one hand we can explain Yeah, there's on one hand we can explain Yeah, there's on one hand we can explain that well, God's doing this as an that well, God's doing this as an that well, God's doing this as an instrument of justice. Sometimes we just instrument of justice. Sometimes we just instrument of justice. Sometimes we just look at life and things don't seem right look at life and things don't seem right look at life and things don't seem right or fair and God allows us to take our or fair and God allows us to take our or fair and God allows us to take our complaints against him and say, I don't complaints against him and say, I don't complaints against him and say, I don't know what you're doing Mhm. in this know what you're doing Mhm. in this know what you're doing Mhm. in this case. But like you said case. But like you said case. But like you said this is part of the application I think. this is part of the application I think. this is part of the application I think. Sometimes we have such a Sometimes we have such a Sometimes we have such a a self-centered view of the or a a self-centered view of the or a a self-centered view of the or a truncated view of the gospel that it truncated view of the gospel that it truncated view of the gospel that it >> Yeah. we so much focus on the benefits I >> Yeah. we so much focus on the benefits I >> Yeah. we so much focus on the benefits I get, right? I get my sins forgiven. I get, right? I get my sins forgiven. I get, right? I get my sins forgiven. I get to escape hell. Yeah. And yet get to escape hell. Yeah. And yet get to escape hell. Yeah. And yet biblically among the prophets biblically among the prophets biblically among the prophets especially, this is really about what especially, this is really about what especially, this is really about what God is doing first and foremost. God is doing first and foremost. God is doing first and foremost. >> Mhm. How he's proving his sovereignty >> Mhm. How he's proving his sovereignty >> Mhm. How he's proving his sovereignty and kingship. And he's got so many more and kingship. And he's got so many more and kingship. And he's got so many more things going on than than we could even things going on than than we could even things going on than than we could even fathom. And he doesn't need to stop and fathom. And he doesn't need to stop and fathom. And he doesn't need to stop and dot the i's and cross the t's for us and dot the i's and cross the t's for us and dot the i's and cross the t's for us and explain everything. But oh, by the way, explain everything. But oh, by the way, explain everything. But oh, by the way, yes, you also receive forgiveness and I yes, you also receive forgiveness and I yes, you also receive forgiveness and I I I think sometimes we focus on I I think sometimes we focus on I I think sometimes we focus on the horizontal benefits of the gospel the horizontal benefits of the gospel the horizontal benefits of the gospel and what the Bible's doing both Old and and what the Bible's doing both Old and and what the Bible's doing both Old and New Testament say, we need to focus New Testament say, we need to focus New Testament say, we need to focus vertically first and foremost what this vertically first and foremost what this vertically first and foremost what this says about God.

  17. says about God. says about God. >> Yeah. And then realize that it's the >> Yeah. And then realize that it's the >> Yeah. And then realize that it's the same God who also wants to be in same God who also wants to be in same God who also wants to be in relationship with us. relationship with us. relationship with us. Yeah, I we have a tough time with Yeah, I we have a tough time with Yeah, I we have a tough time with reconciling that because we so often reconciling that because we so often reconciling that because we so often think that, you know, we are the most think that, you know, we are the most think that, you know, we are the most important part of the story. important part of the story. important part of the story. >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> Which yeah, I I can I can understand >> Which yeah, I I can I can understand >> Which yeah, I I can I can understand that. that. that. Uh but, at the same time, Uh but, at the same time, Uh but, at the same time, trying to trying to trying to reconcile reconcile reconcile all these things that are happening, all these things that are happening, all these things that are happening, you know, all these things that Habakkuk you know, all these things that Habakkuk you know, all these things that Habakkuk are calling out are are are true things. are calling out are are are true things. are calling out are are are true things. There are things happening. Mhm. Um so, being able to reconcile that not so, being able to reconcile that not just with the providence of a sovereign just with the providence of a sovereign just with the providence of a sovereign God, God, God, but also with but also with but also with the the the what we know is a loving, good, just what we know is a loving, good, just what we know is a loving, good, just God. And that's where we struggle God. And that's where we struggle God. And that's where we struggle sometimes, I think, is we think, well, sometimes, I think, is we think, well, sometimes, I think, is we think, well, if God is so loving, then I'm going to if God is so loving, then I'm going to if God is so loving, then I'm going to get what I want or or get what I want or or get what I want or or or or things are going to go my way or, or or things are going to go my way or, or or things are going to go my way or, you know, bad things won't befall me.

  18. you know, bad things won't befall me. you know, bad things won't befall me. And so, you know, that's the problem of And so, you know, that's the problem of And so, you know, that's the problem of pain, thing that that uh C. S. Lewis pain, thing that that uh C. S. Lewis pain, thing that that uh C. S. Lewis wrote so well about and that so that is wrote so well about and that so that is wrote so well about and that so that is one of the hardest things for Christians one of the hardest things for Christians one of the hardest things for Christians and non-Christians alike to try to and non-Christians alike to try to and non-Christians alike to try to reconcile with. reconcile with. reconcile with. Um Um Um but uh so but uh so but uh so but reading it through the lens of the but reading it through the lens of the but reading it through the lens of the prophets of this like, yes, prophets of this like, yes, prophets of this like, yes, these things are happening and God is these things are happening and God is these things are happening and God is not just allowing these things to not just allowing these things to not just allowing these things to happen, happen, happen, but sometimes like acting in a way that but sometimes like acting in a way that but sometimes like acting in a way that causes these things to happen. causes these things to happen. causes these things to happen. And so, how does that fit with with a And so, how does that fit with with a And so, how does that fit with with a God who loves us, with a God who cares God who loves us, with a God who cares God who loves us, with a God who cares for Israel so much? And we have this for Israel so much? And we have this for Israel so much? And we have this thing, like this is thing, like this is thing, like this is I mean, this goes back through the story I mean, this goes back through the story I mean, this goes back through the story of Israel is God's hand saying, "Okay, of Israel is God's hand saying, "Okay, of Israel is God's hand saying, "Okay, Israel, you done gone and messed up Israel, you done gone and messed up Israel, you done gone and messed up again. So, I'm going to allow, again. So, I'm going to allow, again. So, I'm going to allow, you know, slavery. I'm going to allow 40 you know, slavery. I'm going to allow 40 you know, slavery. I'm going to allow 40 years of wandering. I'm going to allow years of wandering. I'm going to allow years of wandering. I'm going to allow this. I'm going to allow this. I'm going this. I'm going to allow this. I'm going this. I'm going to allow this. I'm going to allow this. I'm going to allow to allow this. I'm going to allow to allow this. I'm going to allow You wanted a king so badly, great. You You wanted a king so badly, great. You You wanted a king so badly, great. You get some good kings, but you also get get some good kings, but you also get get some good kings, but you also get some bad kings. And this is this is a some bad kings. And this is this is a some bad kings. And this is this is a part of that that dance that we do with part of that that dance that we do with part of that that dance that we do with God.

  19. God. God. But, what Habakkuk reminds us of is we But, what Habakkuk reminds us of is we But, what Habakkuk reminds us of is we can come before God in the hard times can come before God in the hard times can come before God in the hard times and the good times and we can and that's and the good times and we can and that's and the good times and we can and that's what God so values is he's like, "A, what God so values is he's like, "A, what God so values is he's like, "A, thank you for trusting me enough to know thank you for trusting me enough to know thank you for trusting me enough to know that you can talk to me about anything. that you can talk to me about anything. that you can talk to me about anything. That that you can lay your complaints That that you can lay your complaints That that you can lay your complaints before me. before me. before me. But, my my hope is that you learn to But, my my hope is that you learn to But, my my hope is that you learn to trust me enough to know that like I'm trust me enough to know that like I'm trust me enough to know that like I'm still that good, loving God. I'm just still that good, loving God. I'm just still that good, loving God. I'm just thinking I I see a bigger picture than thinking I I see a bigger picture than thinking I I see a bigger picture than you do. I see the board completely you do. I see the board completely you do. I see the board completely differently." differently." differently." And so, And so, And so, that's a beauty that's a beauty that's a beauty of of of how this book sits in the prophets, at how this book sits in the prophets, at how this book sits in the prophets, at least in my mind. Yeah, that's really least in my mind. Yeah, that's really least in my mind. Yeah, that's really helpful. So, as we've talked about this, helpful. So, as we've talked about this, helpful. So, as we've talked about this, we've talked a lot about God, but I want we've talked a lot about God, but I want we've talked a lot about God, but I want to set you up to be able to I talk about to set you up to be able to I talk about to set you up to be able to I talk about this more specifically as you like. this more specifically as you like. this more specifically as you like. What does Habakkuk teach us about God? What does Habakkuk teach us about God? What does Habakkuk teach us about God? That he I mean, we certainly I mean, you That he I mean, we certainly I mean, you That he I mean, we certainly I mean, you get a lot of orthodox theology in here. get a lot of orthodox theology in here. get a lot of orthodox theology in here. I'm thinking of especially chapter 1 I'm thinking of especially chapter 1 I'm thinking of especially chapter 1 verse 12 where he really verse 12 where he really verse 12 where he really you know, he just says all kinds of true you know, he just says all kinds of true you know, he just says all kinds of true things about God, but that's also part things about God, but that's also part things about God, but that's also part of his problem.

  20. of his problem. of his problem. >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> Holy, God from everlasting, the rock, >> Holy, God from everlasting, the rock, >> Holy, God from everlasting, the rock, um he's pure and all of these things. um he's pure and all of these things. um he's pure and all of these things. But yeah, I it's a great example. You But yeah, I it's a great example. You But yeah, I it's a great example. You we've mentioned Job several times, we've mentioned Job several times, we've mentioned Job several times, Abraham, Abraham, Abraham, that that that God is sovereign, but he doesn't God is sovereign, but he doesn't God is sovereign, but he doesn't he's okay with not us understanding that he's okay with not us understanding that he's okay with not us understanding that and be able to figure it out. God and be able to figure it out. God and be able to figure it out. God doesn't seem interested to always doesn't seem interested to always doesn't seem interested to always explain himself. explain himself. explain himself. In some ways, when we think back to Job, In some ways, when we think back to Job, In some ways, when we think back to Job, right, that would have defeated the right, that would have defeated the right, that would have defeated the purpose. purpose. purpose. Right? If you remember the whole Right? If you remember the whole Right? If you remember the whole the whole wager between God and Satan at the whole wager between God and Satan at the whole wager between God and Satan at the beginning of Job, if God had the beginning of Job, if God had the beginning of Job, if God had actually explained himself to to Job, actually explained himself to to Job, actually explained himself to to Job, then Satan would have won then Satan would have won then Satan would have won that wager cuz then Job would have had a that wager cuz then Job would have had a that wager cuz then Job would have had a reason to continue. Same with Habakkuk, reason to continue. Same with Habakkuk, reason to continue. Same with Habakkuk, it's it's not like God answers his his it's it's not like God answers his his it's it's not like God answers his his intellect intellect intellect and explains everything going on. Yes, and explains everything going on. Yes, and explains everything going on. Yes, you need to be reminded that this there you need to be reminded that this there you need to be reminded that this there is more going on in this world, there's is more going on in this world, there's is more going on in this world, there's more I'm doing, but I don't need you to more I'm doing, but I don't need you to more I'm doing, but I don't need you to be intellectually satisfied be intellectually satisfied be intellectually satisfied to be able to answer all these to be able to answer all these to be able to answer all these philosophical questions.

  21. philosophical questions. philosophical questions. Um I'm going to show you a sense of Um I'm going to show you a sense of Um I'm going to show you a sense of myself myself myself and I'm going to remind you what I've and I'm going to remind you what I've and I'm going to remind you what I've done for done for done for your people in the past and having that your people in the past and having that your people in the past and having that greater vision of what God has done in greater vision of what God has done in greater vision of what God has done in the past and what he promised do in the the past and what he promised do in the the past and what he promised do in the future, that's enough of an answer, even future, that's enough of an answer, even future, that's enough of an answer, even though it's a non-answer. You feel the though it's a non-answer. You feel the though it's a non-answer. You feel the weight of his glory, of his wisdom, yes, weight of his glory, of his wisdom, yes, weight of his glory, of his wisdom, yes, even of his love and goodness, even even of his love and goodness, even even of his love and goodness, even though we may not know how to square though we may not know how to square though we may not know how to square that circle, but that's enough for you that circle, but that's enough for you that circle, but that's enough for you to trust and and to continue on. So, to trust and and to continue on. So, to trust and and to continue on. And also see that God in his patience And also see that God in his patience And also see that God in his patience can bring us along, give us that greater can bring us along, give us that greater can bring us along, give us that greater vision so that we can have those moments vision so that we can have those moments vision so that we can have those moments at the end of chapter three where we're at the end of chapter three where we're at the end of chapter three where we're standing on the mountains and standing standing on the mountains and standing standing on the mountains and standing on the hills praising God for what's it on the hills praising God for what's it on the hills praising God for what's it going to come, not because it's already going to come, not because it's already going to come, not because it's already happened, but there's this faith that happened, but there's this faith that happened, but there's this faith that God will one day make things right. Are there Are there one or two verses that you would like to one or two verses that you would like to one or two verses that you would like to highlight specifically as highlight specifically as highlight specifically as as a little like flagposts of the book, as a little like flagposts of the book, as a little like flagposts of the book, say, "Hey, say, "Hey, say, "Hey, make special note of these so that when make special note of these so that when make special note of these so that when you get to this book it cuz it really you get to this book it cuz it really you get to this book it cuz it really encapsulates an important point to encapsulates an important point to encapsulates an important point to remember." remember." remember." Well, I do think that beginning of Well, I do think that beginning of Well, I do think that beginning of chapter two chapter two chapter two um again, interpretations vary, but I I um again, interpretations vary, but I I um again, interpretations vary, but I I see see see the idea of taking a stand on the the idea of taking a stand on the the idea of taking a stand on the watchpost is I'm going to do my job as a watchpost is I'm going to do my job as a watchpost is I'm going to do my job as a prophet prophet prophet even as I wait to see how God will even as I wait to see how God will even as I wait to see how God will answer me and what he'll have me do.

  28. answer me and what he'll have me do. answer me and what he'll have me do. God's not done with us even as we're God's not done with us even as we're God's not done with us even as we're complaining. And then it goes on to talk complaining. And then it goes on to talk about the vision and the separation of about the vision and the separation of about the vision and the separation of humanity between humanity between humanity between the righteous and the arrogant. And I the righteous and the arrogant. And I the righteous and the arrogant. And I mean, that just highlights exactly what mean, that just highlights exactly what mean, that just highlights exactly what Paul was doing in Romans as he quotes Paul was doing in Romans as he quotes Paul was doing in Romans as he quotes chapter two verse four helps us chapter two verse four helps us chapter two verse four helps us understand the gospel. understand the gospel. understand the gospel. But I again to remind us of that But I again to remind us of that But I again to remind us of that vertical focus, chapter two verse 14, vertical focus, chapter two verse 14, vertical focus, chapter two verse 14, chapter two verse 20. This is all verses chapter two verse 20. This is all verses chapter two verse 20. This is all verses we've we've memorized. And then that we've we've memorized. And then that we've we've memorized. And then that great vision is that we've got to get great vision is that we've got to get great vision is that we've got to get back to a vertical focus on God and what back to a vertical focus on God and what back to a vertical focus on God and what he's doing in the world. he's doing in the world. he's doing in the world. Um and then see how Um and then see how Um and then see how we benefit because we're part and parcel we benefit because we're part and parcel we benefit because we're part and parcel with a much larger with a much larger with a much larger thing that God is up to. I'm part of a thing that God is up to. I'm part of a thing that God is up to.
