I'm I I'm navigate the book of Obadiah. I'm I I'm navigate the book of Obadiah. I'm I I'm excited for this one. It's going to be a excited for this one. It's going to be a excited for this one. It's going to be a lot of fun. lot of fun. lot of fun. >> Yeah, it's great to be here. Thanks. >> Yeah, it's great to be here. Thanks. >> Yeah, it's great to be here. Thanks. >> Uh so, as we do with all of these, let's >> Uh so, as we do with all of these, let's >> Uh so, as we do with all of these, let's uh start in with some of the basic uh start in with some of the basic uh start in with some of the basic details. Now, Obadiah is an interesting details. Now, Obadiah is an interesting details. Now, Obadiah is an interesting one as as as we were talking about a one as as as we were talking about a one as as as we were talking about a little bit in in email. It's the little bit in in email. It's the little bit in in email. It's the shortest book of the Old Testament. Uh, shortest book of the Old Testament. Uh, shortest book of the Old Testament. Uh, you know, if you open up your Bibles to you know, if you open up your Bibles to you know, if you open up your Bibles to it right now, if you're listening, it right now, if you're listening, it right now, if you're listening, you'll see it takes up a maybe like a you'll see it takes up a maybe like a you'll see it takes up a maybe like a page and a quarter [laughter] page and a quarter [laughter] page and a quarter [laughter] of uh of your Bible. Uh, so, but it of uh of your Bible. Uh, so, but it of uh of your Bible. Uh, so, but it doesn't mean that it's not full of deep doesn't mean that it's not full of deep doesn't mean that it's not full of deep stuff. So, I'm excited to get into that stuff. So, I'm excited to get into that stuff. So, I'm excited to get into that today. So, let's start with with the today. So, let's start with with the today. So, let's start with with the basic details. Um, do we know who wrote basic details. Um, do we know who wrote basic details. Um, do we know who wrote the book of Oadiah? I always ask this the book of Oadiah? I always ask this the book of Oadiah? I always ask this question. Thankfully with the prophets question. Thankfully with the prophets question. Thankfully with the prophets it becomes a little bit easier usually it becomes a little bit easier usually it becomes a little bit easier usually because they are name titled but still
-
because they are name titled but still because they are name titled but still let's ask the question do we know who let's ask the question do we know who let's ask the question do we know who wrote this book and when and how does wrote this book and when and how does wrote this book and when and how does knowing these things or what we don't knowing these things or what we don't knowing these things or what we don't know about it how does it affect how we know about it how does it affect how we know about it how does it affect how we read this book read this book read this book >> yeah great question uh I like to call >> yeah great question uh I like to call >> yeah great question uh I like to call Oadia the Rodney Dangerfield of the Oadia the Rodney Dangerfield of the Oadia the Rodney Dangerfield of the Bible [laughter] he doesn't get any Bible [laughter] he doesn't get any Bible [laughter] he doesn't get any respect respect respect and uh uh people usually skip over it and uh uh people usually skip over it and uh uh people usually skip over it like you say it's only 21 verses. like you say it's only 21 verses. like you say it's only 21 verses. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Um >> Um >> Um but uh a lot of the major prophetic but uh a lot of the major prophetic but uh a lot of the major prophetic themes are in this little book. He kind themes are in this little book. He kind themes are in this little book. He kind of can say can say concisely what the of can say can say concisely what the of can say can say concisely what the other prophets say uh in longhand. And other prophets say uh in longhand. And other prophets say uh in longhand. And so you find a lot of the themes here so you find a lot of the themes here so you find a lot of the themes here just stated very succinctly. just stated very succinctly. just stated very succinctly. >> Uh yeah, Obadiah is a wonderful prophet. >> Uh yeah, Obadiah is a wonderful prophet. >> Uh yeah, Obadiah is a wonderful prophet. Um Um Um it's uh all we know about him personally it's uh all we know about him personally it's uh all we know about him personally is his name. Uh but this is uh important is his name. Uh but this is uh important is his name. Uh but this is uh important to realize the ancient Israelites to realize the ancient Israelites to realize the ancient Israelites preserved the names of these prophets.
-
preserved the names of these prophets. preserved the names of these prophets. Uh in the Old Testament there are about Uh in the Old Testament there are about Uh in the Old Testament there are about up to 70 uh prophets and they're named up to 70 uh prophets and they're named up to 70 uh prophets and they're named we you know uh the most famous of course we you know uh the most famous of course we you know uh the most famous of course is and the classic is Moses is and the classic is Moses is and the classic is Moses >> but then you have uh uh Elijah and >> but then you have uh uh Elijah and >> but then you have uh uh Elijah and Elisha these great prophets and then you Elisha these great prophets and then you Elisha these great prophets and then you have the writing prophets uh Isaiah, have the writing prophets uh Isaiah, have the writing prophets uh Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and then the 12 uh uh Jeremiah, Ezekiel and then the 12 uh uh Jeremiah, Ezekiel and then the 12 uh uh Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel are called Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel are called Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel are called major and that's simply Latin mayor. It major and that's simply Latin mayor. It major and that's simply Latin mayor. It simply means bigger. simply means bigger. simply means bigger. >> And the uh word minor is Latin minor and >> And the uh word minor is Latin minor and >> And the uh word minor is Latin minor and it means smaller. That's all. It doesn't it means smaller. That's all. It doesn't it means smaller. That's all. It doesn't mean less important. Just means smaller mean less important. Just means smaller mean less important. Just means smaller books. books. books. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> So u u but what was a prophet? He was a >> So u u but what was a prophet? He was a >> So u u but what was a prophet? He was a mouthpiece of God to the people and he mouthpiece of God to the people and he mouthpiece of God to the people and he was speaking at a certain place in time was speaking at a certain place in time was speaking at a certain place in time uh to those people but the message is uh to those people but the message is uh to those people but the message is recorded so that the prophet continues recorded so that the prophet continues recorded so that the prophet continues to preach to us uh centuries later. So to preach to us uh centuries later. So to preach to us uh centuries later. So our prayer is always to kind of let our prayer is always to kind of let our prayer is always to kind of let these prophets work on us uh and move us these prophets work on us uh and move us these prophets work on us uh and move us and uh uh lead us to repentance and and uh uh lead us to repentance and and uh uh lead us to repentance and faith u and hope in God's promises. So faith u and hope in God's promises. So faith u and hope in God's promises. So it's it's not simply an antiquarian it's it's not simply an antiquarian it's it's not simply an antiquarian pursuit of some ancient literature but pursuit of some ancient literature but pursuit of some ancient literature but it's uh the word of God also uh to us.
-
it's uh the word of God also uh to us. it's uh the word of God also uh to us. But in order to understand it, we first But in order to understand it, we first But in order to understand it, we first of all have to kind of understand of all have to kind of understand of all have to kind of understand his original audience and what he was his original audience and what he was his original audience and what he was originally saying. So the problem with originally saying. So the problem with originally saying. So the problem with Oadia is all we know is his name. Oadia is all we know is his name. Oadia is all we know is his name. [laughter] [laughter] [laughter] >> Yeah. So so we got to kind of infer from >> Yeah. So so we got to kind of infer from >> Yeah. So so we got to kind of infer from the book uh place and time the book uh place and time the book uh place and time and there are different hypotheses on and there are different hypotheses on and there are different hypotheses on this. scholars have different theories. this. scholars have different theories. this. scholars have different theories. Uh you have to kind of read it and infer Uh you have to kind of read it and infer Uh you have to kind of read it and infer when you think this might have uh been. when you think this might have uh been. when you think this might have uh been. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And I can just uh tell you my view. >> And I can just uh tell you my view. >> And I can just uh tell you my view. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Uh so uh I I locate Oadia after the >> Uh so uh I I locate Oadia after the >> Uh so uh I I locate Oadia after the Babylonian Babylonian Babylonian uh campaign against Jerusalem and Judah uh campaign against Jerusalem and Judah uh campaign against Jerusalem and Judah that took place in 587 BC. and before that took place in 587 BC. and before that took place in 587 BC. and before the Babylonian campaign against Edom uh the Babylonian campaign against Edom uh the Babylonian campaign against Edom uh and that took place in 553 BC. So I and that took place in 553 BC. So I and that took place in 553 BC. So I locate Obadiah in the first part of the locate Obadiah in the first part of the locate Obadiah in the first part of the 6th century BC. So the 500 500s BC or 6th century BC. So the 500 500s BC or 6th century BC. So the 500 500s BC or the 6th century. So I locate Oadia the 6th century. So I locate Oadia the 6th century. So I locate Oadia around around around 585 to 555 585 to 555 585 to 555 BC somewhere in there. Um, I think he's BC somewhere in there. Um, I think he's BC somewhere in there. Um, I think he's he's working in the city of Jerusalem. I he's working in the city of Jerusalem. I he's working in the city of Jerusalem. I can't prove it, but but uh that's my
-
can't prove it, but but uh that's my can't prove it, but but uh that's my hunch. And uh Obadiah has a lot of hunch. And uh Obadiah has a lot of hunch. And uh Obadiah has a lot of overlap with Jeremiah 49. overlap with Jeremiah 49. overlap with Jeremiah 49. >> You know, similar wording, similar >> You know, similar wording, similar >> You know, similar wording, similar verses. So, uh uh so, you know, scholars verses. So, uh uh so, you know, scholars verses. So, uh uh so, you know, scholars debate, well, which one used which one debate, well, which one used which one debate, well, which one used which one or did they both come upon it or did they both come upon it or did they both come upon it independently? And how do you explain independently? And how do you explain independently? And how do you explain this? Uh my my and you know there's no this? Uh my my and you know there's no this? Uh my my and you know there's no way to prove these kind of things but my way to prove these kind of things but my way to prove these kind of things but my hunch is that Oadiah was making use of hunch is that Oadiah was making use of hunch is that Oadiah was making use of Jeremiah and u uh so that would you know Jeremiah and u uh so that would you know Jeremiah and u uh so that would you know at any rate the reader should read at any rate the reader should read at any rate the reader should read Jeremiah 49 and you'll see a lot of Jeremiah 49 and you'll see a lot of Jeremiah 49 and you'll see a lot of overlap between the two. M so I take it overlap between the two. M so I take it overlap between the two. M so I take it that Oadiah is preaching to the city of that Oadiah is preaching to the city of that Oadiah is preaching to the city of Jerusalem Jerusalem Jerusalem uh in the first part of the sixth uh in the first part of the sixth uh in the first part of the sixth century. Uh Babylon has just come in and century. Uh Babylon has just come in and century. Uh Babylon has just come in and devastated Judah and Jerusalem devastated Judah and Jerusalem devastated Judah and Jerusalem and the helped them out. The and the helped them out. The and the helped them out. The took advantage of the chaos.
-
took advantage of the chaos. took advantage of the chaos. That's the thing. That's the thing. That's the thing. >> Yeah. Uh so the uh the >> Yeah. Uh so the uh the >> Yeah. Uh so the uh the lived southeast of the Dead Sea. Uh and lived southeast of the Dead Sea. Uh and lived southeast of the Dead Sea. Uh and it's a hill country there. The the it's a hill country there. The the it's a hill country there. The the mountains get up to like 5,000 feet mountains get up to like 5,000 feet mountains get up to like 5,000 feet >> southeast of the Dead Sea. And um uh >> southeast of the Dead Sea. And um uh >> southeast of the Dead Sea. And um uh uh and the ancient were the uh and the ancient were the uh and the ancient were the descendants of Esau. So that makes them descendants of Esau. So that makes them descendants of Esau. So that makes them kind of brothers of the descendants of kind of brothers of the descendants of kind of brothers of the descendants of Jacob. So you got Jacob and Esau and Jacob. So you got Jacob and Esau and Jacob. So you got Jacob and Esau and Oadiah uses that language. Yeah. So, you Oadiah uses that language. Yeah. So, you Oadiah uses that language. Yeah. So, you would think the descendants of Esau would think the descendants of Esau would think the descendants of Esau would kind of side with the Israelites would kind of side with the Israelites would kind of side with the Israelites and even help them out, but instead they and even help them out, but instead they and even help them out, but instead they sided with their enemies and they used sided with their enemies and they used sided with their enemies and they used it as an opportunity to plunder and even it as an opportunity to plunder and even it as an opportunity to plunder and even participate in uh [clears throat] human participate in uh [clears throat] human participate in uh [clears throat] human trafficking, slave trade. trafficking, slave trade. trafficking, slave trade. >> So, they they tried to take advantage of >> So, they they tried to take advantage of >> So, they they tried to take advantage of it. So, Obadiah has a strong rebuke it. So, Obadiah has a strong rebuke it. So, Obadiah has a strong rebuke against Edom. Yeah.
-
against Edom. Yeah. against Edom. Yeah. >> And he announces God's coming doom >> And he announces God's coming doom >> And he announces God's coming doom against Edom, but he also announces against Edom, but he also announces against Edom, but he also announces God's promise to uh Zion, to Jerusalem, God's promise to uh Zion, to Jerusalem, God's promise to uh Zion, to Jerusalem, to Israel. So, it's kind of uh to Israel. So, it's kind of uh to Israel. So, it's kind of uh bad news for Edom, good news for Israel. bad news for Edom, good news for Israel. bad news for Edom, good news for Israel. >> Yeah. Uh but so I located uh in the >> Yeah. Uh but so I located uh in the >> Yeah. Uh but so I located uh in the sixth century and sixth century and sixth century and >> uh and in the city of Jerusalem. >> uh and in the city of Jerusalem. >> uh and in the city of Jerusalem. >> Yeah. I think it's helpful. I like I >> Yeah. I think it's helpful. I like I >> Yeah. I think it's helpful. I like I think I I can imagine people who are think I I can imagine people who are think I I can imagine people who are getting into reading the prophets maybe getting into reading the prophets maybe getting into reading the prophets maybe for the first time that it can be for the first time that it can be for the first time that it can be challenging to because each book in challenging to because each book in challenging to because each book in large part there's a lot of change of large part there's a lot of change of large part there's a lot of change of focus of which which group of people focus of which which group of people focus of which which group of people which nation the prophet is speaking which nation the prophet is speaking which nation the prophet is speaking against in on God's behalf. Uh there's a against in on God's behalf. Uh there's a against in on God's behalf. Uh there's a lot, you know, from from Jeremiah and lot, you know, from from Jeremiah and lot, you know, from from Jeremiah and and whatnot talking about Judah and and whatnot talking about Judah and and whatnot talking about Judah and talking about Jerusalem going to fall.
-
talking about Jerusalem going to fall. talking about Jerusalem going to fall. And then we get Amos that has all these And then we get Amos that has all these And then we get Amos that has all these different nations that that is being different nations that that is being different nations that that is being spoken. And this one is just is focusing spoken. And this one is just is focusing spoken. And this one is just is focusing in like a laser on Edom. And it is very in like a laser on Edom. And it is very in like a laser on Edom. And it is very it's it's interesting how we um or it's it's it's interesting how we um or it's it's it's interesting how we um or it's important I should say for the reader to important I should say for the reader to important I should say for the reader to keep the context in mind of what was keep the context in mind of what was keep the context in mind of what was happening to Edom at this time and why happening to Edom at this time and why happening to Edom at this time and why God is using Obadai to speak directly to God is using Obadai to speak directly to God is using Obadai to speak directly to these people at this time. And so thank these people at this time. And so thank these people at this time. And so thank you for laying that out o over the Jacob you for laying that out o over the Jacob you for laying that out o over the Jacob and Esau part and everything that Edom and Esau part and everything that Edom and Esau part and everything that Edom was doing that would lead God to say was doing that would lead God to say was doing that would lead God to say okay now I have a message for you. okay now I have a message for you. okay now I have a message for you. [laughter] [laughter] [laughter] >> That's right. So, so and uh uh we need >> That's right. So, so and uh uh we need >> That's right. So, so and uh uh we need to realize almost 20% of uh the prophet to realize almost 20% of uh the prophet to realize almost 20% of uh the prophet prophetic material deals with the prophetic material deals with the prophetic material deals with the foreign nations. foreign nations. foreign nations. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Uh Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Amos, >> Uh Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Amos, >> Uh Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Amos, Oadiah, Nahm, Zephaniah, Zechariah, they Oadiah, Nahm, Zephaniah, Zechariah, they Oadiah, Nahm, Zephaniah, Zechariah, they all have these materials about the all have these materials about the all have these materials about the foreign nations. So the God of Israel is foreign nations. So the God of Israel is foreign nations. So the God of Israel is the creator of the heavens and the the creator of the heavens and the the creator of the heavens and the earth, and he's in char. He all nations earth, and he's in char. He all nations earth, and he's in char. He all nations are accountable to him.
-
are accountable to him. are accountable to him. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And and the prophet kind of makes that >> And and the prophet kind of makes that >> And and the prophet kind of makes that clear that he he's not only interested clear that he he's not only interested clear that he he's not only interested in Israel. All the nations are in Israel. All the nations are in Israel. All the nations are accountable to him. And he has prophetic accountable to him. And he has prophetic accountable to him. And he has prophetic words words words >> and he he uh he even speaks to these >> and he he uh he even speaks to these >> and he he uh he even speaks to these nations. nations. nations. >> Yeah. And and I like to uh uh entertain >> Yeah. And and I like to uh uh entertain >> Yeah. And and I like to uh uh entertain the possibility that the nations might the possibility that the nations might the possibility that the nations might have heard some of these messages that have heard some of these messages that have heard some of these messages that [clears throat] it wasn't only uh for [clears throat] it wasn't only uh for [clears throat] it wasn't only uh for inside consumption. Uh Jonah of course inside consumption. Uh Jonah of course inside consumption. Uh Jonah of course is classic example, but there are is classic example, but there are is classic example, but there are examples where like Jeremiah 27 where examples where like Jeremiah 27 where examples where like Jeremiah 27 where the ambassadors of other nations came to the ambassadors of other nations came to the ambassadors of other nations came to Jerusalem to negotiate and Jeremiah Jerusalem to negotiate and Jeremiah Jerusalem to negotiate and Jeremiah spoke to them. So think of it, think of spoke to them. So think of it, think of spoke to them. So think of it, think of Jerusalem as this famous city. Jerusalem as this famous city. Jerusalem as this famous city. >> Other people would send envoys there. So >> Other people would send envoys there. So >> Other people would send envoys there. So you can have kind of a a chance for the you can have kind of a a chance for the you can have kind of a a chance for the prophet to speak to a a wider group.
-
prophet to speak to a a wider group. prophet to speak to a a wider group. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> At any rate, uh the theology is the God >> At any rate, uh the theology is the God >> At any rate, uh the theology is the God of Israel is in charge of the nations. of Israel is in charge of the nations. of Israel is in charge of the nations. >> Yeah. Which is heavily important. So So >> Yeah. Which is heavily important. So So >> Yeah. Which is heavily important. So So let's talk about about this book then let's talk about about this book then let's talk about about this book then with Obadiah. How would you how would with Obadiah. How would you how would with Obadiah. How would you how would you define this book in one sentence? you define this book in one sentence? you define this book in one sentence? What would be your one-s sentence What would be your one-s sentence What would be your one-s sentence description of the book of Obadiah? judgment against the heathen nations judgment against the heathen nations and salvation for God's people. and salvation for God's people. and salvation for God's people. >> Perfect and nice and succinct. >> Perfect and nice and succinct. >> Perfect and nice and succinct. [laughter] [laughter] [laughter] So, so let's look at again it's not an So, so let's look at again it's not an So, so let's look at again it's not an incredibly long book as you said it's 21 incredibly long book as you said it's 21 incredibly long book as you said it's 21 verses but let's talk about the verses but let's talk about the verses but let's talk about the narrative flow of this book if you will narrative flow of this book if you will narrative flow of this book if you will u walk us through what Oadiah is taking u walk us through what Oadiah is taking u walk us through what Oadiah is taking us through in the course of this us through in the course of this us through in the course of this writing. writing. writing. Well, so to understand prophetic Well, so to understand prophetic Well, so to understand prophetic discourse, uh, you have to kind of discourse, uh, you have to kind of discourse, uh, you have to kind of realize its conventions. realize its conventions. realize its conventions. Um, so think of Obadai as an ortor, Um, so think of Obadai as an ortor, Um, so think of Obadai as an ortor, as a public speaker, and he likes to as a public speaker, and he likes to as a public speaker, and he likes to project on the screen scenarios.
-
project on the screen scenarios. project on the screen scenarios. He likes to use a all the prophets like He likes to use a all the prophets like He likes to use a all the prophets like to use a lot of imagery. to use a lot of imagery. to use a lot of imagery. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Uh, you got to get used to imagery. uh >> Uh, you got to get used to imagery. uh >> Uh, you got to get used to imagery. uh and always ask okay what's the basic and always ask okay what's the basic and always ask okay what's the basic point of this image um uh so for example point of this image um uh so for example point of this image um uh so for example in verse uh four uh he says to Edom even in verse uh four uh he says to Edom even in verse uh four uh he says to Edom even if you could exalt your nest like an if you could exalt your nest like an if you could exalt your nest like an eagle and even if you could set your eagle and even if you could set your eagle and even if you could set your nest among the stars now that's nest among the stars now that's nest among the stars now that's hyperbole you can't actually set your hyperbole you can't actually set your hyperbole you can't actually set your nest up among the stars good luck nest up among the stars good luck nest up among the stars good luck >> trying so [laughter] I so Obidai >> trying so [laughter] I so Obidai >> trying so [laughter] I so Obidai exaggerates even if you could get that exaggerates even if you could get that exaggerates even if you could get that high up and then God says from there I high up and then God says from there I high up and then God says from there I will bring you down. So you got to think will bring you down. So you got to think will bring you down. So you got to think of the image and the simile and the of the image and the simile and the of the image and the simile and the metaphor and and you always got to kind metaphor and and you always got to kind metaphor and and you always got to kind of read it uh paragraph by paragraph and of read it uh paragraph by paragraph and of read it uh paragraph by paragraph and ask what's the basic point he's trying ask what's the basic point he's trying ask what's the basic point he's trying to convey in each paragraph. to convey in each paragraph. to convey in each paragraph. So in Oadiah you can ask uh what is he So in Oadiah you can ask uh what is he So in Oadiah you can ask uh what is he condemning the for? [snorts] condemning the for? [snorts] condemning the for? [snorts] And uh uh and he condemns them And uh uh and he condemns them And uh uh and he condemns them [clears throat] for their pride.
-

And typically God's response is uh to the high and mighty, he's going to uh to the high and mighty, he's going to uh to the high and mighty, he's going to bring you down. uh God alone is exalted bring you down. uh God alone is exalted bring you down. uh God alone is exalted and glorified. So um so a lot of the and glorified. So um so a lot of the and glorified. So um so a lot of the message is a Edom, you're deceiving message is a Edom, you're deceiving message is a Edom, you're deceiving yourselves. Uh God is going to bring you yourselves. Uh God is going to bring you yourselves. Uh God is going to bring you down. Um and he's going to use other down. Um and he's going to use other down. Um and he's going to use other nations to do that. So, right off the nations to do that. So, right off the nations to do that. So, right off the bat, uh, he kind of gives them a picture bat, uh, he kind of gives them a picture bat, uh, he kind of gives them a picture of how other nations are being recruited of how other nations are being recruited of how other nations are being recruited to attack Edom, to attack Edom, to attack Edom, and God is going to make Edom despised and God is going to make Edom despised and God is going to make Edom despised and insignificant, and insignificant, and insignificant, and you, Edom, are deceived., God is and you, Edom, are deceived., God is and you, Edom, are deceived., God is going to bring you down. Edom destroyed, Israel restored. Edom destroyed, Israel restored. And the section on the reasons for And the section on the reasons for And the section on the reasons for Edom's punishment just read as you Edom's punishment just read as you Edom's punishment just read as you should not have gloated. You should not have rejoiced. you should not have have rejoiced. you should not have have rejoiced. you should not have spoken arrogantly. You should I just spoken arrogantly. You should I just spoken arrogantly. You should I just love Obadiah's just he's very to the love Obadiah's just he's very to the love Obadiah's just he's very to the point. It's like he's talking to him and point. It's like he's talking to him and point. It's like he's talking to him and saying almost like almost like a a saying almost like almost like a a saying almost like almost like a a frustrated parent which is often times frustrated parent which is often times frustrated parent which is often times how God can like relate, you know, he's how God can like relate, you know, he's how God can like relate, you know, he's like, "Guys, you shouldn't have done like, "Guys, you shouldn't have done like, "Guys, you shouldn't have done this. And it just shouldn't have done this." And it just makes it very clear. But as you said, he makes it very clear. But as you said, he makes it very clear. But as you said, he he also likes to um use some lofty he also likes to um use some lofty he also likes to um use some lofty exaggerative language. I liked earlier exaggerative language. I liked earlier exaggerative language. I liked earlier in verse six at least of the NLT. It in verse six at least of the NLT. It in verse six at least of the NLT. It says every nook and cranny of Edom will says every nook and cranny of Edom will says every nook and cranny of Edom will be searched and looted. [laughter]

be searched and looted. [laughter] be searched and looted. [laughter] That's just such a great phrasing. Every That's just such a great phrasing. Every That's just such a great phrasing. Every nook and cranny of Edom will be searched nook and cranny of Edom will be searched nook and cranny of Edom will be searched and looted. So Oadiah is a is again and looted. So Oadiah is a is again and looted. So Oadiah is a is again >> keeping in context that he is he is >> keeping in context that he is he is >> keeping in context that he is he is announcing announcing announcing a judgment and destruction on a people. a judgment and destruction on a people. a judgment and destruction on a people. Uh and we should keep that in mind. But Uh and we should keep that in mind. But Uh and we should keep that in mind. But it's also just a good read. [laughter] it's also just a good read. [laughter] it's also just a good read. [laughter] No, that's right. You have to kind of No, that's right. You have to kind of No, that's right. You have to kind of get into the imagery. Yeah. You know, to get into the imagery. Yeah. You know, to get into the imagery. Yeah. You know, to just say just say just say >> you'll be destroyed. Well, that would be >> you'll be destroyed. They're going to take it all. This >> Yeah. They're going to take it all. This >> Yeah. They're going to take it all. This is exactly right. [laughter] is exactly right. [laughter] is exactly right. [laughter] Um, okay. So, let's talk about some of Um, okay. So, let's talk about some of Um, okay. So, let's talk about some of the major themes of this book then. What the major themes of this book then. What the major themes of this book then. What are some of the major themes um of are some of the major themes um of are some of the major themes um of Oadiah?

Oadiah? Oadiah? >> So, uh God condemns the pride of the >> So, uh God condemns the pride of the >> So, uh God condemns the pride of the nations. nations. nations. >> Uh uh the God of Israel is Lord. They are the boss. And uh so charge. They are the boss. And uh so these all these prophets, they're these all these prophets, they're these all these prophets, they're constantly condemning human pride and constantly condemning human pride and constantly condemning human pride and hubris. hubris. hubris. >> Um uh uh to God alone be the glory. >> Um uh uh to God alone be the glory. >> Um uh uh to God alone be the glory. >> Uh another one is their efforts at at uh >> Uh another one is their efforts at at uh >> Uh another one is their efforts at at uh self-security are all faulty, false. Um, a [clears throat] lot of it is uh Um, a [clears throat] lot of it is uh Um, a [clears throat] lot of it is uh because of what they did to Israel. So because of what they did to Israel. So because of what they did to Israel. So like verse 10, because of the violence like verse 10, because of the violence like verse 10, because of the violence you did to your brother Jacob, you did to your brother Jacob, you did to your brother Jacob, >> shame will cover you. So um uh how do >> shame will cover you. So um uh how do >> shame will cover you. So um uh how do the nations react to God's people?

the nations react to God's people? the nations react to God's people? You know that and in the New Testament You know that and in the New Testament You know that and in the New Testament that's how do people react to Jesus the that's how do people react to Jesus the that's how do people react to Jesus the Messiah? That's kind of the same type of Messiah? That's kind of the same type of Messiah? That's kind of the same type of theology. theology. theology. Um, and uh, the uh, opposed Um, and uh, the uh, opposed Um, and uh, the uh, opposed God's BC people. God's BC people. God's BC people. >> And it says verse 11 that they cast lots >> And it says verse 11 that they cast lots >> And it says verse 11 that they cast lots for Jerusalem. They treated the holy city like a commodity. city like a commodity. city like a commodity. >> Um, uh, and they became like the other >> Um, uh, and they became like the other >> Um, uh, and they became like the other nations. Um, so Edom is going to be nations. Um, so Edom is going to be nations. Um, so Edom is going to be judged. But he doesn't just focus on judged. But he doesn't just focus on judged. But he doesn't just focus on Edom. uses this to talk about judgment Edom. uses this to talk about judgment Edom. uses this to talk about judgment day against all the nations. What's day against all the nations. What's day against all the nations. What's going to happen to Edom is kind of uh going to happen to Edom is kind of uh going to happen to Edom is kind of uh simply a foretaste a preview of judgment simply a foretaste a preview of judgment simply a foretaste a preview of judgment day against all the nations. So in verse day against all the nations. So in verse day against all the nations. So in verse 15 expands it. The day of Yahweh is 15 expands it. The day of Yahweh is 15 expands it. The day of Yahweh is coming against all the nations. Uh and coming against all the nations. Uh and coming against all the nations. Uh and so the day of the Lord is here in uh in so the day of the Lord is here in uh in so the day of the Lord is here in uh in Oadiah. You have that brought up a lot Oadiah. You have that brought up a lot Oadiah. You have that brought up a lot in the prophets. U in the prophets. U in the prophets. U >> and what's the standard of judgment?

>> and what's the standard of judgment? >> and what's the standard of judgment? This is very Amos states it very This is very Amos states it very This is very Amos states it very succinctly in verse 15. succinctly in verse 15. succinctly in verse 15. As you have done, it'll be done back to As you have done, it'll be done back to As you have done, it'll be done back to you. Your deeds will return upon your you. Your deeds will return upon your you. Your deeds will return upon your own head. The standard is as you did to own head. The standard is as you did to own head. The standard is as you did to others, it's done back to you. Yeah. others, it's done back to you. Yeah. others, it's done back to you. Yeah. >> It's it's very fair. It's measure for >> It's it's very fair. It's measure for >> It's it's very fair. It's measure for measure, you know. Um, it the the in measure, you know. Um, it the the in measure, you know. Um, it the the in Latin we call this the lexalionus, the Latin we call this the lexalionus, the Latin we call this the lexalionus, the law of retaliation. And in the Old law of retaliation. And in the Old law of retaliation. And in the Old Testament, the idiom is an eye for an Testament, the idiom is an eye for an Testament, the idiom is an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a life for a eye, a tooth for a tooth, a life for a eye, a tooth for a tooth, a life for a life. life. life. >> That's just an idiom. The ancient >> That's just an idiom. The ancient >> That's just an idiom. The ancient Israelites did not literally pluck out Israelites did not literally pluck out Israelites did not literally pluck out eyes and knock out teeth. eyes and knock out teeth. eyes and knock out teeth. >> But it means that the punishment fits >> But it means that the punishment fits >> But it means that the punishment fits the crime. So if I knock out your tooth, the crime. So if I knock out your tooth, the crime. So if I knock out your tooth, I don't lose my life. I just lose a I don't lose my life. I just lose a I don't lose my life. I just lose a tooth. If I take your life, I don't just tooth. If I take your life, I don't just tooth. If I take your life, I don't just lose a tooth, I lose my life. It's lose a tooth, I lose my life. It's lose a tooth, I lose my life. It's punishment fits the crime. And that's punishment fits the crime. And that's punishment fits the crime. And that's the standard. As you've done to others, the standard. As you've done to others, the standard. As you've done to others, it's done back to you. Now, that's we're it's done back to you. Now, that's we're it's done back to you. Now, that's we're talking judgment. Now, the gospel is talking judgment. Now, the gospel is talking judgment. Now, the gospel is something different. The gospel is something different. The gospel is something different. The gospel is forgiveness of sins. But judgment is as forgiveness of sins. But judgment is as forgiveness of sins. But judgment is as you've done, it's done back to you. Your you've done, it's done back to you. Your you've done, it's done back to you. Your deeds rebound back on you. And so, it's deeds rebound back on you. And so, it's deeds rebound back on you. And so, it's perfectly fair. you will you you know perfectly fair. you will you you know perfectly fair. you will you you know you have no right to uh uh complain.
-
you have no right to uh uh complain. you have no right to uh uh complain. This is perfectly fair. This is perfectly fair. This is perfectly fair. So judgment day you have this. Um one of So judgment day you have this. Um one of So judgment day you have this. Um one of the great themes I really like to push the great themes I really like to push the great themes I really like to push is verse 16. is verse 16. is verse 16. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> As you've drunk on my holy mountain, so >> As you've drunk on my holy mountain, so >> As you've drunk on my holy mountain, so all the nations will drink continually. all the nations will drink continually. all the nations will drink continually. They'll drink and slurp and be as if They'll drink and slurp and be as if They'll drink and slurp and be as if they had never been. And here he's using they had never been. And here he's using they had never been. And here he's using the well-known metaphor drinking the cup the well-known metaphor drinking the cup the well-known metaphor drinking the cup of God's wrath. of God's wrath. of God's wrath. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> And uh Jeremiah 49 uses this in >> And uh Jeremiah 49 uses this in >> And uh Jeremiah 49 uses this in reference to Edom. Uh Lamentations 4 reference to Edom. Uh Lamentations 4 reference to Edom. Uh Lamentations 4 uses this in reference to Edom. Uh it uses this in reference to Edom. Uh it uses this in reference to Edom. Uh it occurs in Isaiah 51 a lot in Jeremiah. occurs in Isaiah 51 a lot in Jeremiah. occurs in Isaiah 51 a lot in Jeremiah. Uh a lot in the Psalms. Um, this Uh a lot in the Psalms. Um, this Uh a lot in the Psalms. Um, this drinking the cup of wrath kind of drinking the cup of wrath kind of drinking the cup of wrath kind of experiencing God's wrath is like getting experiencing God's wrath is like getting experiencing God's wrath is like getting drunk on wine and becoming helpless and drunk on wine and becoming helpless and drunk on wine and becoming helpless and vulnerable and uh um uh and eventually vulnerable and uh um uh and eventually vulnerable and uh um uh and eventually >> you know being as if he had never been.
-
>> you know being as if he had never been. >> you know being as if he had never been. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> So uh in my commentary I have a big >> So uh in my commentary I have a big >> So uh in my commentary I have a big excursus on this cup of wrath. excursus on this cup of wrath. excursus on this cup of wrath. >> It's an interesting metaphor. Anyway, >> It's an interesting metaphor. Anyway, >> It's an interesting metaphor. Anyway, this is what Jesus was referring to in this is what Jesus was referring to in this is what Jesus was referring to in the garden of Gethsemane. the garden of Gethsemane. the garden of Gethsemane. >> Take this cup away from me if it be thy >> Take this cup away from me if it be thy >> Take this cup away from me if it be thy will. But uh uh but uh uh but not my will. But uh uh but uh uh but not my will. But uh uh but uh uh but not my will but thy will. And so Jesus will but thy will. And so Jesus will but thy will. And so Jesus willingly willingly willingly >> drank the cup of wrath in the place of >> drank the cup of wrath in the place of >> drank the cup of wrath in the place of sinners, you know, in our place. So it's sinners, you know, in our place. So it's sinners, you know, in our place. So it's a powerful biblical metaphor. Obadiah a powerful biblical metaphor. Obadiah a powerful biblical metaphor. Obadiah just summarizes it there in one verse, just summarizes it there in one verse, just summarizes it there in one verse, verse 16. Yeah. verse 16. Yeah. verse 16. Yeah. >> Another theme of course is God will >> Another theme of course is God will >> Another theme of course is God will restore his people. Yes. Uh I like to restore his people. Yes. Uh I like to restore his people. Yes. Uh I like to emphasize the last verse. This is a big emphasize the last verse. This is a big emphasize the last verse. This is a big theme. The kingship will belong to theme. The kingship will belong to theme. The kingship will belong to Yahweh. So it's the promise of the Yahweh. So it's the promise of the Yahweh. So it's the promise of the kingdom of God. kingdom of God. kingdom of God. >> Yeah. I love it. >> Yeah. I love it. >> Yeah. I love it. And what I do love, at least about most And what I do love, at least about most And what I do love, at least about most of the books of the prophets, is there's of the books of the prophets, is there's of the books of the prophets, is there's always this glimmer of hope, of always this glimmer of hope, of always this glimmer of hope, of restoration, of pointing to like God's restoration, of pointing to like God's restoration, of pointing to like God's goodness that yes, these are books of goodness that yes, these are books of goodness that yes, these are books of judgment that these are books that are judgment that these are books that are judgment that these are books that are pointing out the sins of the nations, pointing out the sins of the nations, pointing out the sins of the nations, but there's, you know, he's usually this but there's, you know, he's usually this but there's, you know, he's usually this call to hope in the Lord also. And as call to hope in the Lord also. And as call to hope in the Lord also. And as you said, like for this one, it ends, you said, like for this one, it ends, you said, like for this one, it ends, you know, with with and the Lord himself you know, with with and the Lord himself you know, with with and the Lord himself will be king and and talking about will be king and and talking about will be king and and talking about rescue. Those who have been rescued will rescue. Those who have been rescued will rescue. Those who have been rescued will go up to Mount Zion in Jerusalem and go up to Mount Zion in Jerusalem and go up to Mount Zion in Jerusalem and rule over the mountains of Edom. So I I
-
rule over the mountains of Edom. So I I rule over the mountains of Edom. So I I I just love how how God puts this I just love how how God puts this I just love how how God puts this message on the minds of the prophets message on the minds of the prophets message on the minds of the prophets that it's not just it's not just the that it's not just it's not just the that it's not just it's not just the punishment, it's also it's pointing back punishment, it's also it's pointing back punishment, it's also it's pointing back to the good father. It's pointing back to the good father. It's pointing back to the good father. It's pointing back to the king to, you know, to the to the king to, you know, to the to the king to, you know, to the rightful king and that reminder of his rightful king and that reminder of his rightful king and that reminder of his goodness, his faithfulness, his trust goodness, his faithfulness, his trust goodness, his faithfulness, his trust and and that's I I I appreciate and and that's I I I appreciate and and that's I I I appreciate deeply that this is the message that God deeply that this is the message that God deeply that this is the message that God gave to these prophets. gave to these prophets. gave to these prophets. >> Yeah. And that's that's a very good >> Yeah. And that's that's a very good >> Yeah. And that's that's a very good point. In fact, every prophetic book point. In fact, every prophetic book point. In fact, every prophetic book ends on this note of gospel of God's ends on this note of gospel of God's ends on this note of gospel of God's glad tidings. Uh, every book except glad tidings. Uh, every book except glad tidings. Uh, every book except maybe Jeremiah, the sequence of Jeremiah maybe Jeremiah, the sequence of Jeremiah maybe Jeremiah, the sequence of Jeremiah is a little odd, but of Isaiah, and of is a little odd, but of Isaiah, and of is a little odd, but of Isaiah, and of Ezekiel, Ezekiel, Ezekiel, and of Hosea, and of Joel, Amos, Amos 9, and of Hosea, and of Joel, Amos, Amos 9, and of Hosea, and of Joel, Amos, Amos 9, and then here at the end of Oadiah, they and then here at the end of Oadiah, they and then here at the end of Oadiah, they all end on this like Micah ends on this. all end on this like Micah ends on this. all end on this like Micah ends on this. They all end on this note that uh uh uh They all end on this note that uh uh uh They all end on this note that uh uh uh and and Oaniah says the kingdom of God.
-
and and Oaniah says the kingdom of God. and and Oaniah says the kingdom of God. And that's good news. That's good news And that's good news. That's good news And that's good news. That's good news for people. Even good news for the for people. Even good news for the for people. Even good news for the Gentile nations. Gentile nations. Gentile nations. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> That they'll be uh included under God's >> That they'll be uh included under God's >> That they'll be uh included under God's uh gracious, merciful, redemptive uh gracious, merciful, redemptive uh gracious, merciful, redemptive endtime rule. And of course, Jesus endtime rule. And of course, Jesus endtime rule. And of course, Jesus announces that this kingdom of God the announces that this kingdom of God the announces that this kingdom of God the prophets were pro promising has begun prophets were pro promising has begun prophets were pro promising has begun now through his ministry. you know, now through his ministry. you know, now through his ministry. you know, throughout the gospels, he's always throughout the gospels, he's always throughout the gospels, he's always talking about the kingdom of God. talking about the kingdom of God. talking about the kingdom of God. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And how that's happening through his >> And how that's happening through his >> And how that's happening through his ministry and through his preaching and ministry and through his preaching and ministry and through his preaching and and works. And it it's to be consummated and works. And it it's to be consummated and works. And it it's to be consummated when he comes again in glory. So, uh, when he comes again in glory. So, uh, when he comes again in glory. So, uh, Obadiah kind of says it succinctly, but Obadiah kind of says it succinctly, but Obadiah kind of says it succinctly, but the rest of the Bible really spells this the rest of the Bible really spells this the rest of the Bible really spells this out. The kingdom of God is is good news. out. The kingdom of God is is good news. out. The kingdom of God is is good news. >> Uh, >> Uh, >> Uh, >> yeah. a good news to a people who >> yeah. a good news to a people who >> yeah. a good news to a people who weren't getting good news for the rest weren't getting good news for the rest weren't getting good news for the rest of the prophecy. [laughter] Um, so let's of the prophecy. [laughter] Um, so let's of the prophecy. [laughter] Um, so let's stay then on God. What does Oadiah teach stay then on God. What does Oadiah teach stay then on God. What does Oadiah teach us about God?

us about God? us about God? >> Well, that God is the Lord of the >> Well, that God is the Lord of the >> Well, that God is the Lord of the nations, that he's the judge, all nations, that he's the judge, all nations, that he's the judge, all nations are accountable to him, all nations are accountable to him, all nations are accountable to him, all people are accountable to him, and we're people are accountable to him, and we're people are accountable to him, and we're all accountable to the God of Israel. all accountable to the God of Israel. all accountable to the God of Israel. >> Uh, he has uh exclusive claims. Um we >> Uh, he has uh exclusive claims. Um we >> Uh, he has uh exclusive claims. Um we live in a country that values freedom of live in a country that values freedom of live in a country that values freedom of religion and and that has its you know religion and and that has its you know religion and and that has its you know we we don't want the government to we we don't want the government to we we don't want the government to impose uh religion uh any specific impose uh religion uh any specific impose uh religion uh any specific religion uh and the government's not religion uh and the government's not religion uh and the government's not supposed to preach the gospel. That's supposed to preach the gospel. That's supposed to preach the gospel. That's what the church does. But from the what the church does. But from the what the church does. But from the perspective of the true God, there's no perspective of the true God, there's no perspective of the true God, there's no freedom of religion. He's the true God. freedom of religion. He's the true God. freedom of religion. He's the true God. Uh it doesn't matter whether ourselves. Uh it doesn't matter whether ourselves. Uh it doesn't matter whether we like it or not. We're accountable to we like it or not. We're accountable to we like it or not. We're accountable to our maker.

You should not have You should not have You should not have have rejoiced when the people of Judah have rejoiced when the people of Judah have rejoiced when the people of Judah suffered. Of of God what of of God's heart, right? Of of God wanting us to be a people that are for wanting us to be a people that are for wanting us to be a people that are for Jerusalem in this case, for Jerusalem. But also like us is we can read this as But also like us is we can read this as But also like us is we can read this as like, okay, um these are things that I like, okay, um these are things that I like, okay, um these are things that I should take to heart, too. Because you know what response to pride. Because you know what response to pride. Because you know what God is calling us to is a relationship God is calling us to is a relationship God is calling us to is a relationship of surrender to him of saying you God of surrender to him of saying you God of surrender to him of saying you God your way your way not mine. And what we your way your way not mine. And what we your way your way not mine. And what we see throughout all of the Bible but also see throughout all of the Bible but also see throughout all of the Bible but also often in our own lives is my way my way often in our own lives is my way my way often in our own lives is my way my way maybe a little bit of God's way.

maybe a little bit of God's way. maybe a little bit of God's way. [laughter] And so [laughter] And so [laughter] And so >> that's right. >> that's right. >> that's right. >> And and so that that that calling out at >> And and so that that that calling out at >> And and so that that that calling out at the beginning of that pride piece is so the beginning of that pride piece is so the beginning of that pride piece is so important. you. It says in verse 33, you have been deceived by your own pride have been deceived by your own pride have been deceived by your own pride because you live in a rock fortress. because you live in a rock fortress. because you live in a rock fortress. It can also happen, you know, even on a It can also happen, you know, even on a It can also happen, you know, even on a a national level. And so Edom was like a national level. And so Edom was like a national level. And so Edom was like that and God through Oadiah was that and God through Oadiah was that and God through Oadiah was condemning their pride. Uh to God alone condemning their pride. Uh to God alone condemning their pride. Uh to God alone be the glory, you know. be the glory, you know. be the glory, you know. >> So for >> So for >> So for the next question, we usually talk about the next question, we usually talk about the next question, we usually talk about like some verses or passages that are like some verses or passages that are like some verses or passages that are worth particular worth particular worth particular consideration. Summary
The sermon, based on the shortest book of the Old Testament, Obadiah, focuses on the judgment of Edom. It highlights Edom's downfall due to pride, violence, and apathy, referencing Obadiah 1:2-4 where God declares he will bring them down from their seemingly unassailable mountain fortresses. The practical takeaway is to be aware of these destructive traits in our own lives, as God judges them.
