So Testament with with First Peter. So Testament with with First Peter. So thank you for coming back on. I thank you for coming back on. I thank you for coming back on. I appreciate it.

  3. appreciate it. appreciate it. >> So glad to be back. Really fun. >> So glad to be back. Really fun. >> So glad to be back. Really fun. >> And it is perfect timing. I got word >> And it is perfect timing. I got word >> And it is perfect timing. I got word that you were working on a commentary that you were working on a commentary that you were working on a commentary right now on First Peter as we're right now on First Peter as we're right now on First Peter as we're talking. So what what better time than talking. So what what better time than talking. So what what better time than when you're like in the midst of pouring when you're like in the midst of pouring when you're like in the midst of pouring through it to get to talk about it. So through it to get to talk about it. So through it to get to talk about it. So as as we enter into what's going to be as as we enter into what's going to be as as we enter into what's going to be First Peter and then the next episode First Peter and then the next episode First Peter and then the next episode next week will be Second Peter and Jude next week will be Second Peter and Jude next week will be Second Peter and Jude together. together. together. So I'll save that but but this is our So I'll save that but but this is our So I'll save that but but this is our first entry into Peter. So what can you first entry into Peter. So what can you first entry into Peter. So what can you tell us about authorship of the letter tell us about authorship of the letter tell us about authorship of the letter in general? About Peter who the letter in general? About Peter who the letter in general? About Peter who the letter is named for and then about maybe when is named for and then about maybe when is named for and then about maybe when it was written and and just all these it was written and and just all these it was written and and just all these basic details and how how does it set us basic details and how how does it set us basic details and how how does it set us up to best approach reading this letter? up to best approach reading this letter? up to best approach reading this letter? >> Great question. Great place to start. Um >> Great question. Great place to start. Um >> Great question. Great place to start. Um the letter is attributed to Peter. Peter the letter is attributed to Peter. Peter the letter is attributed to Peter. Peter at the beginning says Peter an apostle at the beginning says Peter an apostle at the beginning says Peter an apostle of Jesus Christ. Later on in chapter of Jesus Christ. Later on in chapter of Jesus Christ. Later on in chapter five he refers to himself as an five he refers to himself as an five he refers to himself as an eyewitness of the sufferings eyewitness of the sufferings eyewitness of the sufferings of Christ and also points to of Christ and also points to of Christ and also points to eyewitness his glory to be revealed.

  4. eyewitness his glory to be revealed. eyewitness his glory to be revealed. Um Um Um The early church after the time of the The early church after the time of the The early church after the time of the first you know after the time of the New first you know after the time of the New first you know after the time of the New Testament affirmed routinely that this Testament affirmed routinely that this Testament affirmed routinely that this was Peter who wrote it. There was some was Peter who wrote it. There was some was Peter who wrote it. There was some questions around Second Peter but First questions around Second Peter but First questions around Second Peter but First Peter never was questioned by early Peter never was questioned by early Peter never was questioned by early church leaders and writers. church leaders and writers. church leaders and writers. That doesn't mean that in with the rise That doesn't mean that in with the rise That doesn't mean that in with the rise of modern scholarship there hasn't been of modern scholarship there hasn't been of modern scholarship there hasn't been question raised about authorship. Lots question raised about authorship. Lots question raised about authorship. Lots of authorship questions got raised uh of authorship questions got raised uh of authorship questions got raised uh yeah in the 18th and 19th centuries. Um yeah in the 18th and 19th centuries. Um yeah in the 18th and 19th centuries. Um One reason is because the Greek of First One reason is because the Greek of First One reason is because the Greek of First Peter is pretty darn good. It's It does Peter is pretty darn good. It's It does Peter is pretty darn good. It's It does Is this really a Galilean fisherman Is this really a Galilean fisherman Is this really a Galilean fisherman that wrote this? So there's been debate that wrote this? So there's been debate that wrote this? So there's been debate from that angle and also with a couple from that angle and also with a couple from that angle and also with a couple of references in the letter itself. It of references in the letter itself. It of references in the letter itself. It also also also we have this amazing letter outside of we have this amazing letter outside of we have this amazing letter outside of the New Testament from governor of the New Testament from governor of the New Testament from governor of Bithynia Bithynia Bithynia which is one of the places that Peter which is one of the places that Peter which is one of the places that Peter wrote to. His name is Pliny and he wrote wrote to. His name is Pliny and he wrote wrote to. His name is Pliny and he wrote it about 112 or so and he wrote a letter it about 112 or so and he wrote a letter it about 112 or so and he wrote a letter to the emperor Trajan, the emperor, to to the emperor Trajan, the emperor, to to the emperor Trajan, the emperor, to ask about what to do with these ask about what to do with these ask about what to do with these bothersome Christians who is he's lining bothersome Christians who is he's lining bothersome Christians who is he's lining up and up and up and having having having convicted and then actually executing.

  5. convicted and then actually executing. convicted and then actually executing. So we have a letter that that feels like So we have a letter that that feels like So we have a letter that that feels like it's maybe somewhere in a trajectory it's maybe somewhere in a trajectory it's maybe somewhere in a trajectory from First Peter to that situation we from First Peter to that situation we from First Peter to that situation we hear there and some people feel like hear there and some people feel like hear there and some people feel like it's a little closer to that. So they it's a little closer to that. So they it's a little closer to that. So they want to date it later which means want to date it later which means want to date it later which means if Peter died about 68 according to if Peter died about 68 according to if Peter died about 68 according to tradition in Rome, then if it's later tradition in Rome, then if it's later tradition in Rome, then if it's later it's also not Peter. So those things it's also not Peter. So those things it's also not Peter. So those things kind of lined up to raise some question kind of lined up to raise some question kind of lined up to raise some question marks. Um marks. Um marks. Um I think those question marks have been I think those question marks have been I think those question marks have been answered well by various people. Karen answered well by various people. Karen answered well by various people. Karen Jobes Jobes Jobes has written on First Peter has a has written on First Peter has a has written on First Peter has a wonderful article and also a part of her wonderful article and also a part of her wonderful article and also a part of her commentary she has it in there which commentary she has it in there which commentary she has it in there which talks about talks about talks about um um um sort of the sort of the sort of the the language or linguistic interference the language or linguistic interference the language or linguistic interference in the letter that just means that this in the letter that just means that this in the letter that just means that this seems to be written by somebody who's seems to be written by somebody who's seems to be written by somebody who's not a native Greek speaker according to not a native Greek speaker according to not a native Greek speaker according to her research which is so interesting. her research which is so interesting. her research which is so interesting. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Um so >> Um so >> Um so more scholarship recently has been more scholarship recently has been more scholarship recently has been weighing in on no it's written by Peter. weighing in on no it's written by Peter. weighing in on no it's written by Peter. Joel Green, Jean Green Joel Green, Jean Green Joel Green, Jean Green >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Karen Jobes, Ruth Ann Reese, >> Karen Jobes, Ruth Ann Reese, >> Karen Jobes, Ruth Ann Reese, Dennis Edwards, Craig Keener. So lots of Dennis Edwards, Craig Keener. So lots of Dennis Edwards, Craig Keener. So lots of scholars have said, you know, there's scholars have said, you know, there's scholars have said, you know, there's good reason to think Peter wrote it. And good reason to think Peter wrote it. And good reason to think Peter wrote it. And if so, mid to late 60s.

  6. if so, mid to late 60s. if so, mid to late 60s. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Um those who say it wasn't Peter would >> Um those who say it wasn't Peter would >> Um those who say it wasn't Peter would be somewhere in the 90s probably or that be somewhere in the 90s probably or that be somewhere in the 90s probably or that kind of that kind of area. Now, what we kind of that kind of area. Now, what we kind of that kind of area. Now, what we So, does it matter for reading the So, does it matter for reading the So, does it matter for reading the letter? Now, you know, imagining Peter letter? Now, you know, imagining Peter letter? Now, you know, imagining Peter as we read the letter, as we read the letter, as we read the letter, well, how do we know Peter? We know well, how do we know Peter? We know well, how do we know Peter? We know Peter primarily from the Gospels, Peter primarily from the Gospels, Peter primarily from the Gospels, Matthew, Acts, and similar. I like that. Matthew, Acts, and similar. I like that. Matthew, Acts, and similar. I like that. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And Acts, right? Um >> And Acts, right? Um >> And Acts, right? Um I think it's actually helpful to say I'm I think it's actually helpful to say I'm I think it's actually helpful to say I'm not going to import a particular picture not going to import a particular picture not going to import a particular picture of Peter into the letter. I'm going to of Peter into the letter. I'm going to of Peter into the letter. I'm going to uh stay with what's called implied uh stay with what's called implied uh stay with what's called implied reader implied author, reader implied author, reader implied author, you know, the one we learn from the you know, the one we learn from the you know, the one we learn from the letter itself so that we don't do the letter itself so that we don't do the letter itself so that we don't do the thing where we sometimes take something thing where we sometimes take something thing where we sometimes take something about what we think we know about Peter about what we think we know about Peter about what we think we know about Peter or what we hear about Peter from another or what we hear about Peter from another or what we hear about Peter from another source and override something in the source and override something in the source and override something in the letter itself. So, I I find it helpful letter itself. So, I I find it helpful letter itself. So, I I find it helpful to have kind of a implied author to have kind of a implied author to have kind of a implied author perspective. I mean, cuz I study Matthew perspective. I mean, cuz I study Matthew perspective. I mean, cuz I study Matthew and and Peter's so impulsive in Matthew. and and Peter's so impulsive in Matthew. and and Peter's so impulsive in Matthew. But, I don't hear any of that in the But, I don't hear any of that in the But, I don't hear any of that in the letter and I don't want to try to make letter and I don't want to try to make letter and I don't want to try to make the letter writer very impulsive cuz the letter writer very impulsive cuz the letter writer very impulsive cuz that would be wrong, right? It would that would be wrong, right? It would that would be wrong, right? It would kind of transgress the letter itself.

  7. kind of transgress the letter itself. kind of transgress the letter itself. So, I just I really love reading the So, I just I really love reading the So, I just I really love reading the letter, listening to the integrity of letter, listening to the integrity of letter, listening to the integrity of it, listening for the author's voice in it, listening for the author's voice in it, listening for the author's voice in that letter. That's to me more that letter. That's to me more that letter. That's to me more important. important. important. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> I think it's Peter. >> I think it's Peter. >> I think it's Peter. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And I don't want to kind of throw Acts 2 >> And I don't want to kind of throw Acts 2 >> And I don't want to kind of throw Acts 2 in there, you know, in there, you know, in there, you know, Um but there's a wonderful book um Vox Um but there's a wonderful book um Vox Um but there's a wonderful book um Vox Patra, which means the voice of Peter by Patra, which means the voice of Peter by Patra, which means the voice of Peter by Gene Green, who does some of that Gene Green, who does some of that Gene Green, who does some of that comparing across the New Testament. So, comparing across the New Testament. So, comparing across the New Testament. So, if you want that, great. If you want to if you want that, great. If you want to if you want that, great. If you want to read just about 1 Peter, my commentary read just about 1 Peter, my commentary read just about 1 Peter, my commentary in the New International Commentary in the New International Commentary in the New International Commentary series will be just on 1 Peter and series will be just on 1 Peter and series will be just on 1 Peter and that's where I'll focus my attention. that's where I'll focus my attention. that's where I'll focus my attention. So, I think authorship is important So, I think authorship is important So, I think authorship is important particularly cuz it tie is tied to date particularly cuz it tie is tied to date particularly cuz it tie is tied to date in 1 Peter and I do think it's in in the in 1 Peter and I do think it's in in the in 1 Peter and I do think it's in in the 60s probably um 60s probably um 60s probably um and and and then the implied author really helps us then the implied author really helps us then the implied author really helps us hear kind of the coherence of what's hear kind of the coherence of what's hear kind of the coherence of what's going on. What is this author Peter going on. What is this author Peter going on. What is this author Peter doing for these doing for these doing for these these readers in these readers in these readers in what's now modern-day Turkey, what's now modern-day Turkey, what's now modern-day Turkey, what was called Asia Minor or Anatolia what was called Asia Minor or Anatolia what was called Asia Minor or Anatolia in the ancient world. He's writing to in the ancient world. He's writing to in the ancient world. He's writing to believers all across this wide believers all across this wide believers all across this wide geographical area.

  8. geographical area. geographical area. What does he want to communicate to What does he want to communicate to What does he want to communicate to them? We don't necessarily have to know them? We don't necessarily have to know them? We don't necessarily have to know how he knew them or if he knows them, how he knew them or if he knows them, how he knew them or if he knows them, but what he what does he want to but what he what does he want to but what he what does he want to communicate? That's just the important communicate? That's just the important communicate? That's just the important edge of interpretation. So, edge of interpretation. So, edge of interpretation. So, I think we have enough in the I think we have enough in the I think we have enough in the letter to know how to answer that letter to know how to answer that letter to know how to answer that >> I I think you're very right. The picture >> I I think you're very right. The picture >> I I think you're very right. The picture that most people have of Peter is, you that most people have of Peter is, you that most people have of Peter is, you know, all all the know, all all the know, all all the the gospel stories of Peter, the gospel stories of Peter, the gospel stories of Peter, you know, the stepping out of the boat you know, the stepping out of the boat you know, the stepping out of the boat to walk on water or or the cutting off to walk on water or or the cutting off to walk on water or or the cutting off the ear, you know, having the sword. the ear, you know, having the sword. the ear, you know, having the sword. Again, that that impetuous we've always Again, that that impetuous we've always Again, that that impetuous we've always like to say, you know, Peter the one like to say, you know, Peter the one like to say, you know, Peter the one with the foot in the mouth. He's just with the foot in the mouth. He's just with the foot in the mouth. He's just kind of always like jumping into kind of always like jumping into kind of always like jumping into into things. And as you said, this into things. And as you said, this into things. And as you said, this paints a different picture. So, so A, I paints a different picture. So, so A, I paints a different picture. So, so A, I think it's very good to take the letter think it's very good to take the letter think it's very good to take the letter uh on face value like for what he is uh on face value like for what he is uh on face value like for what he is saying in the letter. saying in the letter. saying in the letter. Um but at the same time, if you're if Um but at the same time, if you're if Um but at the same time, if you're if you are walking in with this picture of you are walking in with this picture of you are walking in with this picture of Peter and you read Peter and you read Peter and you read something a little bit different, well, something a little bit different, well, something a little bit different, well, think about this is, you know, think about this is, you know, think about this is, you know, 30 some odd years after the life of G if 30 some odd years after the life of G if 30 some odd years after the life of G if we're taking that like in the '60s date.

  9. we're taking that like in the '60s date. we're taking that like in the '60s date. >> Yes. >> Yes. >> Yes. >> So, this is a more mature Peter. This is >> So, this is a more mature Peter. This is >> So, this is a more mature Peter. This is a Peter who has been walking through a Peter who has been walking through a Peter who has been walking through Acts, through spreading the gospel. And Acts, through spreading the gospel. And Acts, through spreading the gospel. And um he probably he may not have known it um he probably he may not have known it um he probably he may not have known it at the time, but nearing the end of his at the time, but nearing the end of his at the time, but nearing the end of his life in '68. And so, there is something life in '68. And so, there is something life in '68. And so, there is something that's a little deeper, a little richer, that's a little deeper, a little richer, that's a little deeper, a little richer, a little more well-lived in in what he a little more well-lived in in what he a little more well-lived in in what he is saying in this letter, which which is saying in this letter, which which is saying in this letter, which which I'm excited to get into with the themes I'm excited to get into with the themes I'm excited to get into with the themes that we're going to be be hitting on. that we're going to be be hitting on. that we're going to be be hitting on. Uh before we Uh before we Uh before we get to that part, get to that part, get to that part, you may remember my favorite quote you may remember my favorite quote you may remember my favorite quote my favorite question that I love to ask, my favorite question that I love to ask, my favorite question that I love to ask, which is how would you describe 1 Peter which is how would you describe 1 Peter which is how would you describe 1 Peter in one sentence? in one sentence? in one sentence? >> I know, and I had to work on this. >> I know, and I had to work on this. >> I know, and I had to work on this. >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> Not easy, and it's a long sentence, but >> Not easy, and it's a long sentence, but >> Not easy, and it's a long sentence, but that's that's that's >> used to those, yeah. >> used to those, yeah. >> used to those, yeah. >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> So, here's what I did. Peter encourages >> So, here's what I did. Peter encourages >> So, here's what I did. Peter encourages believers to persevere when mistreated believers to persevere when mistreated believers to persevere when mistreated for their singular allegiance to Jesus for their singular allegiance to Jesus for their singular allegiance to Jesus by reminding them of Jesus' example of by reminding them of Jesus' example of by reminding them of Jesus' example of non-retaliation in suffering and of his non-retaliation in suffering and of his non-retaliation in suffering and of his final vindication after his return.

  10. final vindication after his return. final vindication after his return. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> You get that suffering plus the example >> You get that suffering plus the example >> You get that suffering plus the example >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Jesus in that. >> Jesus in that. >> Jesus in that. >> Yeah, and that's really going to >> Yeah, and that's really going to >> Yeah, and that's really going to highlight those themes as we get into highlight those themes as we get into highlight those themes as we get into those. Let's then those. Let's then those. Let's then So, so, you know, we have So, so, you know, we have So, so, you know, we have five chapters here in 1 Peter. So, walk five chapters here in 1 Peter. So, walk five chapters here in 1 Peter. So, walk us through the flow of the letter. What us through the flow of the letter. What us through the flow of the letter. What topics is he getting at? What is, you topics is he getting at? What is, you topics is he getting at? What is, you know, it's starting with chapter 1 going know, it's starting with chapter 1 going know, it's starting with chapter 1 going through the end of chapter 5, but what through the end of chapter 5, but what through the end of chapter 5, but what is Peter taking the reader through in is Peter taking the reader through in is Peter taking the reader through in this letter? this letter? this letter? >> Excellent question. Uh and this is so >> Excellent question. Uh and this is so >> Excellent question. Uh and this is so important for getting a that feel for important for getting a that feel for important for getting a that feel for the whole and keeping it in mind as we the whole and keeping it in mind as we the whole and keeping it in mind as we read. Um you really we see kind of a read. Um you really we see kind of a read. Um you really we see kind of a back and forth between affirmations back and forth between affirmations back and forth between affirmations about what God has done in Christ and about what God has done in Christ and about what God has done in Christ and exhortations. It's a very exhortative exhortations. It's a very exhortative exhortations. It's a very exhortative letter. In other words, there's a lot of letter. In other words, there's a lot of letter. In other words, there's a lot of things that Peter says you ought to do. things that Peter says you ought to do. things that Peter says you ought to do. But, mixed in with that, we need to But, mixed in with that, we need to But, mixed in with that, we need to really pay attention to these what is really pay attention to these what is really pay attention to these what is the is and the ought. The There's a lot the is and the ought. The There's a lot the is and the ought. The There's a lot of is. What Who are you? What has God of is. What Who are you? What has God of is. What Who are you? What has God already done? So, kind of you still see already done? So, kind of you still see already done? So, kind of you still see that in my walking through that flow.

  11. that in my walking through that flow. that in my walking through that flow. In the first 12 verses, you know, the In the first 12 verses, you know, the In the first 12 verses, you know, the introduction, and the first thing introduction, and the first thing introduction, and the first thing uh Peter does is bless God for this uh Peter does is bless God for this uh Peter does is bless God for this amazing salvation that's a birth into a amazing salvation that's a birth into a amazing salvation that's a birth into a living hope into an inheritance into a living hope into an inheritance into a living hope into an inheritance into a salvation, salvation, salvation, and then he very quickly introduces and then he very quickly introduces and then he very quickly introduces trials trials trials >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> and the distress they're feeling. >> and the distress they're feeling. >> and the distress they're feeling. doesn't yet use the language of doesn't yet use the language of doesn't yet use the language of suffering, which is pervasive in the suffering, which is pervasive in the suffering, which is pervasive in the letter, but he talks about the letter, but he talks about the letter, but he talks about the the distress they're feeling because of the distress they're feeling because of the distress they're feeling because of trials. Um yet they rejoice in them trials. Um yet they rejoice in them trials. Um yet they rejoice in them because they know that the outcome is because they know that the outcome is because they know that the outcome is their salvation and is this vindication their salvation and is this vindication their salvation and is this vindication by God and God's blessing on them at the by God and God's blessing on them at the by God and God's blessing on them at the end when they come through it all. And end when they come through it all. And end when they come through it all. Yeah, and that hearkens back to those exhortations that he's he's to those exhortations that he's he's to those exhortations that he's he's starting with for for sure. And so, starting with for for sure. And so, starting with for for sure. And so, um um um that that hope, that righteous living, that that hope, that righteous living, that that hope, that righteous living, that holy living piece, um that holy living piece, um that holy living piece, um that's something he continues to go back that's something he continues to go back that's something he continues to go back to. And everything everything he's to. And everything everything he's to. And everything everything he's talking about really flows out of that. talking about really flows out of that. talking about really flows out of that. The household uh whole chapter is really The household uh whole chapter is really The household uh whole chapter is really a part of what it means to live a part of what it means to live a part of what it means to live righteously and to live out of hope. righteously and to live out of hope. righteously and to live out of hope. It's the same thing with suffering. It's It's the same thing with suffering. It's It's the same thing with suffering. It's living righteously and living out of living righteously and living out of living righteously and living out of hope. It's really it's pointing back to hope. It's really it's pointing back to hope. It's really it's pointing back to that as as that marker, as that center that as as that marker, as that center that as as that marker, as that center point, that compass point, and then point, that compass point, and then point, that compass point, and then here's how that plays out in all these here's how that plays out in all these here's how that plays out in all these different areas. different areas. different areas. Being persecuted, here Being persecuted, here Being persecuted, here here's what that mean like live in here's what that mean like live in here's what that mean like live in righteous hope. Live righteous hope. Live righteous hope. Live spiritual, holy living. Same thing with spiritual, holy living. Same thing with spiritual, holy living. Same thing with with how you treat the household. I'm with how you treat the household. I'm with how you treat the household. I'm going to say something different, right?

  22. going to say something different, right? going to say something different, right? Mhm. You may be told it's okay to treat Mhm. You may be told it's okay to treat Mhm. You may be told it's okay to treat other people this way. I'm saying no, other people this way. I'm saying no, other people this way. I'm saying no, righteous living looks like this, and righteous living looks like this, and righteous living looks like this, and it's an overflow of what this life that it's an overflow of what this life that it's an overflow of what this life that is bent on Christ and that is bent on Christ and that is bent on Christ and that >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> a Christian marker as you were talking >> a Christian marker as you were talking >> a Christian marker as you were talking about, which it is so fun it is it's about, which it is so fun it is it's about, which it is so fun it is it's it's so stark how it's so stark how it's so stark how apparent that that word stands out in apparent that that word stands out in apparent that that word stands out in the Bible as you're reading it, that the Bible as you're reading it, that the Bible as you're reading it, that Christian word, cuz you're not used to Christian word, cuz you're not used to Christian word, cuz you're not used to seeing the word Christian. seeing the word Christian. seeing the word Christian. And so, it does stand out in this letter And so, it does stand out in this letter And so, it does stand out in this letter for sure. for sure. for sure. >> Yeah. Yeah, it is. It's it's just one of >> Yeah. Yeah, it is. It's it's just one of >> Yeah. Yeah, it is. It's it's just one of three places in the New Testament and three places in the New Testament and three places in the New Testament and um I yeah, it it's it's um it's what's um I yeah, it it's it's um it's what's um I yeah, it it's it's um it's what's supposed to mark us. supposed to mark us. supposed to mark us. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Not just as Christ followers, but people >> Not just as Christ followers, but people >> Not just as Christ followers, but people who are loyal to Christ. I think it has who are loyal to Christ. I think it has who are loyal to Christ. I think it has that kind of feel to it. that kind of feel to it. that kind of feel to it. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Cuz you're you attach yourself >> Cuz you're you attach yourself >> Cuz you're you attach yourself to a god in the ancient world, and to a god in the ancient world, and to a god in the ancient world, and they're to attach themselves to just they're to attach themselves to just they're to attach themselves to just one, right? Only one Lord, singularity. one, right? Only one Lord, singularity. one, right? Only one Lord, singularity. >> Yeah, Messiah. I love that. So, so we've >> Yeah, Messiah. I love that. So, so we've >> Yeah, Messiah. I love that. So, so we've been touching and naming a few of these been touching and naming a few of these been touching and naming a few of these themes, but let's just mark these a themes, but let's just mark these a themes, but let's just mark these a little bit more explicitly. What are the little bit more explicitly. What are the little bit more explicitly. What are the major themes in this letter? And and how major themes in this letter? And and how major themes in this letter? And and how does it help the reader, maybe for does it help the reader, maybe for does it help the reader, maybe for somebody who's never really spent time somebody who's never really spent time somebody who's never really spent time in 1 Peter, how does it help them to in 1 Peter, how does it help them to in 1 Peter, how does it help them to know these themes and how they approach know these themes and how they approach know these themes and how they approach the reading of the letter?

  23. the reading of the letter? the reading of the letter? >> Yeah, um I mean, read through five >> Yeah, um I mean, read through five >> Yeah, um I mean, read through five chapters and start listing the things chapters and start listing the things chapters and start listing the things you keep on hearing. I mean, I think you keep on hearing. I mean, I think you keep on hearing. I mean, I think theme identification is one of the theme identification is one of the theme identification is one of the easier things to do and it's so easier things to do and it's so easier things to do and it's so powerful, right? powerful, right? powerful, right? Um I think hope in suffering is one way Um I think hope in suffering is one way Um I think hope in suffering is one way to think about it, but Christ's example, to think about it, but Christ's example, to think about it, but Christ's example, so I've just finished a book in the New so I've just finished a book in the New so I've just finished a book in the New Word Biblical Themes series Zondervan is Word Biblical Themes series Zondervan is Word Biblical Themes series Zondervan is doing on 1 Peter. So, I got to pick five doing on 1 Peter. So, I got to pick five doing on 1 Peter. So, I got to pick five themes and I I, you know, themes and I I, you know, themes and I I, you know, >> What a perfect question then this is for >> What a perfect question then this is for >> What a perfect question then this is for you. you. you. >> So, I'm going to read them to you cuz >> So, I'm going to read them to you cuz >> So, I'm going to read them to you cuz because they're not just hope, they're because they're not just hope, they're because they're not just hope, they're you know, there's also they're also sort you know, there's also they're also sort you know, there's also they're also sort of two things mixed together because I of two things mixed together because I of two things mixed together because I think that's the way themes work. They think that's the way themes work. They think that's the way themes work. They don't work in isolation, they work in a don't work in isolation, they work in a don't work in isolation, they work in a matrix. matrix. matrix. Um so, the pattern of Christ's Um so, the pattern of Christ's Um so, the pattern of Christ's faithfulness from suffering to faithfulness from suffering to faithfulness from suffering to vindication. We could just look at the vindication. We could just look at the vindication. We could just look at the letter and say, "Let's just pay letter and say, "Let's just pay letter and say, "Let's just pay attention to Jesus." Not thing to do cuz attention to Jesus." Not thing to do cuz attention to Jesus." Not thing to do cuz he uses that he uses that he uses that as a way to help them, right? So, that's as a way to help them, right? So, that's as a way to help them, right? So, that's the lovely theme. It's my first theme I the lovely theme. It's my first theme I the lovely theme. It's my first theme I talk about in that book. And then talk about in that book. And then talk about in that book. And then familial or family identity of the familial or family identity of the familial or family identity of the Messianic community. That the the family Messianic community. That the the family Messianic community. That the the family identity just the the the identity just the the the identity just the the the God as um the one who has given us new God as um the one who has given us new God as um the one who has given us new birth and God as father, but God is also birth and God as father, but God is also birth and God as father, but God is also the one who provides the milk that you the one who provides the milk that you the one who provides the milk that you need to grow. So, it's kind of a this need to grow. So, it's kind of a this need to grow. So, it's kind of a this mothering image that's so interesting.

  24. mothering image that's so interesting. mothering image that's so interesting. And then And then And then siblings, we are brothers and sisters, siblings, we are brothers and sisters, siblings, we are brothers and sisters, right? He doesn't use the traditional right? He doesn't use the traditional right? He doesn't use the traditional Pauline Pauline Pauline um adelphoi brothers and sisters, he um adelphoi brothers and sisters, he um adelphoi brothers and sisters, he uses adelphotoy uses adelphotoy uses adelphotoy or I'm trying to think of the exact form or I'm trying to think of the exact form or I'm trying to think of the exact form of it. It's it's sort of the the family of it. It's it's sort of the the family of it. It's it's sort of the the family of believers. So, they emphasize the of believers. So, they emphasize the of believers. So, they emphasize the familial part of it. Um familial part of it. Um familial part of it. Um then, third, allegiance to Christ in then, third, allegiance to Christ in then, third, allegiance to Christ in suffering. suffering. suffering. So, what does it mean to be true to So, what does it mean to be true to So, what does it mean to be true to Christ? Not just to suffer, but to Christ? Not just to suffer, but to Christ? Not just to suffer, but to suffer because of Christ. Cuz suffer because of Christ. Cuz suffer because of Christ. Cuz Peter always wants to ask the question, Peter always wants to ask the question, Peter always wants to ask the question, "Is it really for suffering that you're "Is it really for suffering that you're "Is it really for suffering that you're I mean, you I mean, you I mean, you know, for doing the right thing that know, for doing the right thing that know, for doing the right thing that you're suffering, really?" you're suffering, really?" you're suffering, really?" And then, um And then, um And then, um sojourning in hope. And I skipped one. I sojourning in hope. And I skipped one. I sojourning in hope. And I skipped one. I covenantal identity of the Messianic covenantal identity of the Messianic covenantal identity of the Messianic community. So, I have covenantal community. So, I have covenantal community. So, I have covenantal identity because of those priestly and identity because of those priestly and identity because of those priestly and um themes out of Israel's relationship um themes out of Israel's relationship um themes out of Israel's relationship with God, um covenantal identity, family with God, um covenantal identity, family with God, um covenantal identity, family identity, allegiance to Christ in identity, allegiance to Christ in identity, allegiance to Christ in suffering, and sojourning in hope. suffering, and sojourning in hope. suffering, and sojourning in hope. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Those are my But, you know, there are >> Those are my But, you know, there are >> Those are my But, you know, there are still more themes beyond that, right?

  25. still more themes beyond that, right? still more themes beyond that, right? Even in this little Even in this little Even in this little five-chapter letter. five-chapter letter. five-chapter letter. >> Yeah, I mean, and you know, and again, >> Yeah, I mean, and you know, and again, >> Yeah, I mean, and you know, and again, because it is is so rich in all these because it is is so rich in all these because it is is so rich in all these themes stem out of this kind of overall themes stem out of this kind of overall themes stem out of this kind of overall king a continued pointing back to Christ king a continued pointing back to Christ king a continued pointing back to Christ that it's easy to then pick out all that it's easy to then pick out all that it's easy to then pick out all these sub-themes these sub-themes these sub-themes of what that looks like in action. And of what that looks like in action. And of what that looks like in action. And and that's a lot of what Peter and that's a lot of what Peter and that's a lot of what Peter talks about is is talks about is is talks about is is life in Christ in action. Here's life in Christ in action. Here's life in Christ in action. Here's Here's these things that are part of Here's these things that are part of Here's these things that are part of your daily life, and here's how it's to your daily life, and here's how it's to your daily life, and here's how it's to then live these out in a Christ-like then live these out in a Christ-like then live these out in a Christ-like way. A lot of Paul's was about the way. A lot of Paul's was about the way. A lot of Paul's was about the church and talking about answering these church and talking about answering these church and talking about answering these church issues. And and Peter is talking church issues. And and Peter is talking church issues. And and Peter is talking about these specific life issues. He's about these specific life issues. He's about these specific life issues. He's talking about the family. He's talking talking about the family. He's talking talking about the family. He's talking about when persecuted. He's talking, you about when persecuted. He's talking, you about when persecuted. He's talking, you know, all these different specific know, all these different specific know, all these different specific themes about things that you might themes about things that you might themes about things that you might encounter in your everyday life. And encounter in your everyday life. And encounter in your everyday life. And yeah. yeah. yeah. >> are kind of pressed against society in >> are kind of pressed against society in >> are kind of pressed against society in this context. I mean, that's what he's this context. I mean, that's what he's this context. I mean, that's what he's addressing is when they feel most sort addressing is when they feel most sort addressing is when they feel most sort of pressed and kind of between a rock of pressed and kind of between a rock of pressed and kind of between a rock and a hard place.

  26. and a hard place. and a hard place. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Especially for the most vulnerable. What >> Especially for the most vulnerable. What >> Especially for the most vulnerable. What do you do in those moments? do you do in those moments? do you do in those moments? Um how do you stay true, and kind of Um how do you stay true, and kind of Um how do you stay true, and kind of take what comes? take what comes? take what comes? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And and I do think it's help Well, we'll >> And and I do think it's help Well, we'll >> And and I do think it's help Well, we'll talk more about this, but you know, how talk more about this, but you know, how talk more about this, but you know, how it's helpful to read this it's helpful to read this it's helpful to read this pre-Christendom. You know, this isn't pre-Christendom. You know, this isn't pre-Christendom. You know, this isn't when Christianity is all understood. when Christianity is all understood. when Christianity is all understood. It's it's a odd thing. It looks like It's it's a odd thing. It looks like It's it's a odd thing. It looks like atheism, because you're denying the atheism, because you're denying the atheism, because you're denying the gods. gods. gods. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> You only have one god in the ancient >> You only have one god in the ancient >> You only have one god in the ancient world, you're kind of atheistic. world, you're kind of atheistic. world, you're kind of atheistic. That that what's considered truly So, That that what's considered truly So, That that what's considered truly So, how do you live in that context? I just how do you live in that context? I just how do you live in that context? I just think we live in a different context. think we live in a different context. think we live in a different context. So, I always want to be thoughtful about So, I always want to be thoughtful about So, I always want to be thoughtful about how I bring 1 Peter to bear today, how I bring 1 Peter to bear today, how I bring 1 Peter to bear today, because we're not in a pre-Christendom because we're not in a pre-Christendom because we're not in a pre-Christendom context. We will never again be in that. context. We will never again be in that. context. We will never again be in that. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Might say we're post. I think we're >> Might say we're post. I think we're >> Might say we're post. I think we're still between, still post, maybe, but still between, still post, maybe, but still between, still post, maybe, but but that it's a different context. And but that it's a different context. And but that it's a different context. And and I do think we then have to ask some and I do think we then have to ask some and I do think we then have to ask some questions about how do we hear this questions about how do we hear this questions about how do we hear this well? well? well? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> We don't misappropriate, cuz you can do >> We don't misappropriate, cuz you can do >> We don't misappropriate, cuz you can do that with the Bible. that with the Bible. that with the Bible. >> Sometimes. >> Sometimes. >> Sometimes. >> Well, I'm glad you went there, because >> Well, I'm glad you went there, because >> Well, I'm glad you went there, because because that's exactly what I was because that's exactly what I was because that's exactly what I was thinking is is about the nature of that thinking is is about the nature of that thinking is is about the nature of that context. Again, you know, being context. Again, you know, being context. Again, you know, being 30-some-odd years into the birth of the 30-some-odd years into the birth of the 30-some-odd years into the birth of the church.

  27. church. church. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And so, you still have, you know, >> And so, you still have, you know, >> And so, you still have, you know, everything is still somewhat fresh and everything is still somewhat fresh and everything is still somewhat fresh and new, and they're still being met by, you new, and they're still being met by, you new, and they're still being met by, you know, outside pagan culture and whatnot. know, outside pagan culture and whatnot. know, outside pagan culture and whatnot. But then you have Peter, who's been at But then you have Peter, who's been at But then you have Peter, who's been at this now for 30-some-odd years, and you this now for 30-some-odd years, and you this now for 30-some-odd years, and you know, he's he's writing out of his know, he's he's writing out of his know, he's he's writing out of his experience. He's writing out of somebody experience. He's writing out of somebody experience. He's writing out of somebody who's been through persecution. He's who's been through persecution. He's who's been through persecution. He's writing out of somebody who has seen writing out of somebody who has seen writing out of somebody who has seen these issues, and he's and so, he's these issues, and he's and so, he's these issues, and he's and so, he's writing from a place of added writing from a place of added writing from a place of added wisdom, having been living in in through wisdom, having been living in in through wisdom, having been living in in through it. Um it. Um it. Um yeah. yeah. yeah. >> No. And uh Frank Matera, Shively Smith, >> No. And uh Frank Matera, Shively Smith, >> No. And uh Frank Matera, Shively Smith, some different people who write on 1 some different people who write on 1 some different people who write on 1 Peter talk about that sort of pastoral Peter talk about that sort of pastoral Peter talk about that sort of pastoral edge we hear edge we hear edge we hear >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> throughout the letter. You know, wisdom >> throughout the letter. You know, wisdom >> throughout the letter. You know, wisdom applied applied applied >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> to particular contexts. and and when >> to particular contexts. and and when >> to particular contexts. and and when there's no uh ideal answer. there's no uh ideal answer. there's no uh ideal answer. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> But part of what his answer is too, we >> But part of what his answer is too, we >> But part of what his answer is too, we even talked about sort of eschatology or even talked about sort of eschatology or even talked about sort of eschatology or how the letter thinks about how the letter thinks about how the letter thinks about uh the end of God. I love this. So it's uh the end of God. I love this. So it's uh the end of God. I love this. So it's okay. So in 4:17, the end of all things okay. So in 4:17, the end of all things okay. So in 4:17, the end of all things is near. But back in chapter 1 verse 20, is near. But back in chapter 1 verse 20, is near. But back in chapter 1 verse 20, he says he was revealed in these last he says he was revealed in these last he says he was revealed in these last times for your sake, the Messiah. So we times for your sake, the Messiah. So we times for your sake, the Messiah. So we are in the last times, but the end is are in the last times, but the end is are in the last times, but the end is not here yet. You know, it's got that not here yet. You know, it's got that not here yet. You know, it's got that lovely both and already not yet. Um so lovely both and already not yet. Um so lovely both and already not yet. Um so this kind of we're almost there at the this kind of we're almost there at the this kind of we're almost there at the end. In fact, this is the time you can end. In fact, this is the time you can end. In fact, this is the time you can expect the pressing of the people of expect the pressing of the people of expect the pressing of the people of God. The kind of the God. The kind of the God. The kind of the um uh um um uh um um uh um uh uh uh that more the intensification of the that more the intensification of the that more the intensification of the situation. That's the way um Jewish

  28. situation. That's the way um Jewish situation. That's the way um Jewish writers sometimes pictured the end was writers sometimes pictured the end was writers sometimes pictured the end was Daniel 12 1 through 3 this Daniel 12 1 through 3 this Daniel 12 1 through 3 this Oh, at the end it's going to be just Oh, at the end it's going to be just Oh, at the end it's going to be just and then and then it's like sort of and and then and then it's like sort of and and then and then it's like sort of and John's gospel talked about it as birth John's gospel talked about it as birth John's gospel talked about it as birth pains. It's like going through the birth pains. It's like going through the birth pains. It's like going through the birth canal. Not pleasant for either mother or canal. Not pleasant for either mother or canal. Not pleasant for either mother or child. But at the end, you know, so child. But at the end, you know, so child. But at the end, you know, so you're just right there. It's kind of you're just right there. It's kind of you're just right there. It's kind of that picture. that picture. that picture. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> So we realize sort of when you're >> So we realize sort of when you're >> So we realize sort of when you're living. That's another answer Peter living. That's another answer Peter living. That's another answer Peter gives. He gives so many kind of gives. He gives so many kind of gives. He gives so many kind of um hooks so that you people can go, oh, um hooks so that you people can go, oh, um hooks so that you people can go, oh, I'm living in the last times, but the I'm living in the last times, but the I'm living in the last times, but the end is not here yet. end is not here yet. end is not here yet. That's why I'm not at home right now. That's why I'm not at home right now. That's why I'm not at home right now. For him it's not so much For him it's For him it's not so much For him it's For him it's not so much For him it's not so much I um this world is not my not so much I um this world is not my not so much I um this world is not my home. I'm just a passing through as the home. I'm just a passing through as the home. I'm just a passing through as the song goes. It's the home is not yet my song goes. It's the home is not yet my song goes. It's the home is not yet my my the world is not yet my home as in my the world is not yet my home as in my the world is not yet my home as in the final restoration we hear in 2 Peter the final restoration we hear in 2 Peter the final restoration we hear in 2 Peter 3, for example. There's 3, for example. There's 3, for example. There's that's still to come. So the inheritance that's still to come. So the inheritance that's still to come. So the inheritance is being kept safely in the heavens in is being kept safely in the heavens in is being kept safely in the heavens in the abode of God the abode of God the abode of God and you are also being kept, he says. 1 and you are also being kept, he says. 1 and you are also being kept, he says. 1 chapter 1 3 and 4, you're kept like kick chapter 1 3 and 4, you're kept like kick chapter 1 3 and 4, you're kept like kick their kept for each other. Where are their kept for each other. Where are their kept for each other. Where are they going to come together?

  29. they going to come together? they going to come together? I think in this world when all things I think in this world when all things I think in this world when all things are made new, but it does he doesn't are made new, but it does he doesn't are made new, but it does he doesn't say. But it's kind of think oh, it's say. But it's kind of think oh, it's say. But it's kind of think oh, it's kept we're going to all just go into kept we're going to all just go into kept we're going to all just go into heaven. NT Wright says, it's not like heaven. NT Wright says, it's not like heaven. NT Wright says, it's not like when I say I've got a nice bottle of when I say I've got a nice bottle of when I say I've got a nice bottle of champagne in the fridge we're going to champagne in the fridge we're going to champagne in the fridge we're going to all crawl in there and enjoy it all crawl in there and enjoy it all crawl in there and enjoy it together. No, I'm going to bring it out. together. No, I'm going to bring it out. together. No, I'm going to bring it out. I'm going to bring out to you. So, that I'm going to bring out to you. So, that I'm going to bring out to you. So, that picture just kind of informs my way of picture just kind of informs my way of picture just kind of informs my way of thinking of this final day when then thinking of this final day when then thinking of this final day when then the whole context will be the renewed the whole context will be the renewed the whole context will be the renewed heavens and earth and heavens and earth and heavens and earth and suffering will be gone. suffering will be gone. suffering will be gone. Yeah. Anyway, I think he anticipates a Yeah. Anyway, I think he anticipates a Yeah. Anyway, I think he anticipates a lot of that and says lot of that and says lot of that and says know what time you're living in. know what time you're living in. know what time you're living in. >> Yeah, it's a beautiful picture. >> Yeah, it's a beautiful picture. >> Yeah, it's a beautiful picture. What What What What does 1 Peter teach us about God? >> Well, I think if you just read the first >> Well, I think if you just read the first five verses, five verses, five verses, you would know that God is the one who you would know that God is the one who you would know that God is the one who initiates salvation. initiates salvation. initiates salvation. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> God births us. No baby chooses to be >> God births us. No baby chooses to be >> God births us. No baby chooses to be born. So, God born. So, God born. So, God from the start is the initiator. from the start is the initiator. from the start is the initiator. Um has set up side an inheritance for Um has set up side an inheritance for Um has set up side an inheritance for us, has already done the work of us, has already done the work of us, has already done the work of salvation. We are living in this salvation. We are living in this salvation. We are living in this new time of a living hope. So, God's new time of a living hope. So, God's new time of a living hope. So, God's initiative Um and you could trace that initiative Um and you could trace that initiative Um and you could trace that through the whole letter, I think, but through the whole letter, I think, but through the whole letter, I think, but it's really clear at the front. Um God it's really clear at the front. Um God it's really clear at the front. Um God will bring believers through suffering.

  30. will bring believers through suffering. will bring believers through suffering. Because we know that God has initiated Because we know that God has initiated Because we know that God has initiated the first part of salvation, then the the first part of salvation, then the the first part of salvation, then the final day final day final day is already in God's hands. Jesus already is already in God's hands. Jesus already is already in God's hands. Jesus already chose the trajectory. What God has done chose the trajectory. What God has done chose the trajectory. What God has done for Jesus, God will do for those who for Jesus, God will do for those who for Jesus, God will do for those who follow Jesus. follow Jesus. follow Jesus. Vindication. And then that theme of Vindication. And then that theme of Vindication. And then that theme of God's family, that God has God's family, that God has God's family, that God has um um um has set apart a family. So, verse 4 has set apart a family. So, verse 4 has set apart a family. So, verse 4 chapter 4:17 chapter 4:17 chapter 4:17 He talks about God's household. He talks about God's household. He talks about God's household. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Uses language of household in a letter >> Uses language of household in a letter >> Uses language of household in a letter where he has kind of two household where he has kind of two household where he has kind of two household codes, chapter 2 and 3 and 5. And you codes, chapter 2 and 3 and 5. And you codes, chapter 2 and 3 and 5. And you are God's household. Now, here there it are God's household. Now, here there it are God's household. Now, here there it says for it is time for judgment or says for it is time for judgment or says for it is time for judgment or the beginning of the end to begin with the beginning of the end to begin with the beginning of the end to begin with God's household. God's household. God's household. The judgement there is not about final The judgement there is not about final The judgement there is not about final judgement or judgement or judgement or condemnation. It's about this condemnation. It's about this condemnation. It's about this pressing that's happening right now. pressing that's happening right now. pressing that's happening right now. It's already beginning. The It's already beginning. The It's already beginning. The The way judgement looks for the people The way judgement looks for the people The way judgement looks for the people of God is that it cons- you know, it it of God is that it cons- you know, it it of God is that it cons- you know, it it it gives them pain in the present as it gives them pain in the present as it gives them pain in the present as they they they pressed through that final bit of the pressed through that final bit of the pressed through that final bit of the process into the end.

  31. process into the end. process into the end. Um so but about them as God's household Um so but about them as God's household Um so but about them as God's household and earlier in chapter two the house the and earlier in chapter two the house the and earlier in chapter two the house the language they are God's house a holy language they are God's house a holy language they are God's house a holy priesthood being built into a spiritual priesthood being built into a spiritual priesthood being built into a spiritual house. house. house. He could have just said temple. I think He could have just said temple. I think He could have just said temple. I think it is temple there but he wants to use it is temple there but he wants to use it is temple there but he wants to use that language to say no we're part of that language to say no we're part of that language to say no we're part of this thing together. this thing together. this thing together. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> We need that. >> We need that. >> We need that. Schively Smith in her work from Schively Smith in her work from Schively Smith in her work from strangers to family really nicely strangers to family really nicely strangers to family really nicely emphasizes this family dynamic that is emphasizes this family dynamic that is emphasizes this family dynamic that is in in in First Peter. So God's people First Peter. So God's people First Peter. So God's people >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. So that's I think it teaches us >> Yeah. So that's I think it teaches us >> Yeah. So that's I think it teaches us about God that God has created this about God that God has created this about God that God has created this family family family and there's love there that is and grace and there's love there that is and grace and there's love there that is and grace and mercy and and mercy and and mercy and >> Yeah, it's it's a whole different >> Yeah, it's it's a whole different >> Yeah, it's it's a whole different picture of of what our relationships are picture of of what our relationships are picture of of what our relationships are are are based on or built in and what are are based on or built in and what are are based on or built in and what God is calling us into being is this God is calling us into being is this God is calling us into being is this family and so that all the house family and so that all the house family and so that all the house pictures all all the familial pictures all all the familial pictures all all the familial um um um language is a part of that that brothers language is a part of that that brothers language is a part of that that brothers and sisters as you were talking about and sisters as you were talking about and sisters as you were talking about that's more familial that's more familial that's more familial and and and and this language is really important and this language is really important and this language is really important because it's painting this picture. It because it's painting this picture. It because it's painting this picture. It it's like the brush that Peter is using it's like the brush that Peter is using it's like the brush that Peter is using is this familial brush and you get all is this familial brush and you get all is this familial brush and you get all of these themes and topics but it's all of these themes and topics but it's all of these themes and topics but it's all painted through with this brush of we painted through with this brush of we painted through with this brush of we are family. You are called to be family.

  32. are family. You are called to be family. are family. You are called to be family. That is what God is making. That is the That is what God is making. That is the That is what God is making. That is the whole point of all of this is God whole point of all of this is God whole point of all of this is God wanting this family and so it's wanting this family and so it's wanting this family and so it's as you as you start to see the painting as you as you start to see the painting as you as you start to see the painting of Peter's letters through that lens, of Peter's letters through that lens, of Peter's letters through that lens, through knowing these brush strokes, it through knowing these brush strokes, it through knowing these brush strokes, it really helps to paint that picture. really helps to paint that picture. really helps to paint that picture. >> Yeah. Yeah, it is really rich and I I >> Yeah. Yeah, it is really rich and I I >> Yeah. Yeah, it is really rich and I I don't think I anticipated writing a don't think I anticipated writing a don't think I anticipated writing a chapter in a themes book on family in chapter in a themes book on family in chapter in a themes book on family in first Peter. You could say well, maybe first Peter. You could say well, maybe first Peter. You could say well, maybe that's across the whole New Testament, that's across the whole New Testament, that's across the whole New Testament, but there's something very intentional but there's something very intentional but there's something very intentional about where he starts cuz that's one of about where he starts cuz that's one of about where he starts cuz that's one of the first things he does is say the first things he does is say the first things he does is say he has given you new birth. he has given you new birth. he has given you new birth. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Um >> Um >> Um and you know, proselytes into Judaism and you know, proselytes into Judaism and you know, proselytes into Judaism could come into you know, birth. They could come into you know, birth. They could come into you know, birth. They were birthed, but the new birth language were birthed, but the new birth language were birthed, but the new birth language is quite unique is quite unique is quite unique in even in in the New Testament. I mean, in even in in the New Testament. I mean, in even in in the New Testament. I mean, it's it's you know, born from above, it's it's you know, born from above, it's it's you know, born from above, born again chapter 3 of John here and born again chapter 3 of John here and born again chapter 3 of John here and then I think it's in is it in Titus? then I think it's in is it in Titus? then I think it's in is it in Titus? There's just just very little language There's just just very little language There's just just very little language that uses that metaphor and yet here it that uses that metaphor and yet here it that uses that metaphor and yet here it is and it's just it's used both in is and it's just it's used both in is and it's just it's used both in chapter 1 verse 3 and 1 verse 23. So it chapter 1 verse 3 and 1 verse 23. So it chapter 1 verse 3 and 1 verse 23. So it kind of front ends the book. So you get kind of front ends the book. So you get kind of front ends the book. So you get this sense of this sense of this sense of the family of God from the get-go.

  33. the family of God from the get-go. the family of God from the get-go. >> Well, >> Well, >> Well, and it really is a really beautiful and it really is a really beautiful and it really is a really beautiful picture when you if you take the the picture when you if you take the the picture when you if you take the the context of the Gospels and Acts into context of the Gospels and Acts into context of the Gospels and Acts into play too and you have Peter as a part of play too and you have Peter as a part of play too and you have Peter as a part of this group of disciples who are this group of disciples who are this group of disciples who are traveling with Jesus and becoming this traveling with Jesus and becoming this traveling with Jesus and becoming this found family that Jesus has called in. found family that Jesus has called in. found family that Jesus has called in. You know, these brothers and sisters who You know, these brothers and sisters who You know, these brothers and sisters who were traveling and then up through were traveling and then up through were traveling and then up through Pentecost and this and this whole family Pentecost and this and this whole family Pentecost and this and this whole family being birthed of the of the church being being birthed of the of the church being being birthed of the of the church being born born born that it really is this beautiful picture that it really is this beautiful picture that it really is this beautiful picture that is that is that is that is clearly very central and that is clearly very central and that is clearly very central and important to Peter's overall message. Um important to Peter's overall message. Um important to Peter's overall message. Um and and and >> Yeah, and you and you you call it a >> Yeah, and you and you you call it a >> Yeah, and you and you you call it a picture which I think it's a metaphor. What's Peter a lot to leadership today? What's Peter a lot to leadership today? What's Peter a lot to say in chapter five? Be shepherds not say in chapter five? Be shepherds not say in chapter five? Be shepherds not for your own gain, willingly, this kind for your own gain, willingly, this kind for your own gain, willingly, this kind of servant heart. It's just a powerful of servant heart. Like spirituality that's more questing. Like spirituality that's more questing. Like I I grew up asking questions in my brain I I grew up asking questions in my brain I I grew up asking questions in my brain if nobody else would listen to them or if nobody else would listen to them or if nobody else would listen to them or if I felt like they weren't welcome. But you know, that the the metaphors share both of those. metaphors share both of those. metaphors share both of those. >> Yeah. It's it's >> Yeah. It's it's >> Yeah. It's it's it's hard to especially with the living it's hard to especially with the living it's hard to especially with the living stones piece, it's hard to not think stones piece, it's hard to not think stones piece, it's hard to not think about what Jesus said of Peter being the about what Jesus said of Peter being the about what Jesus said of Peter being the rock and and to have that picture of of rock and and to have that picture of of rock and and to have that picture of of he's saying you are the living stone is he's saying you are the living stone is he's saying you are the living stone is is Jesus is the cornerstone you and and is Jesus is the cornerstone you and and is Jesus is the cornerstone you and and then you are the living stone. So it is then you are the living stone. So it is then you are the living stone. So it is a really neat picture of this of this a really neat picture of this of this a really neat picture of this of this continuation of the faith of the family continuation of the faith of the family continuation of the faith of the family of the church of of the church of of the church of of that temple stone picture. What again is that talking about? So that they might be This is even So that they might be This is even So that they might be This is even harder or just as hard. Might be judged harder or just as hard. Might be judged harder or just as hard. Might be judged according to human standards in regard according to human standards in regard according to human standards in regard to the body and live according to God in to the body and live according to God in to the body and live according to God in regard to the spirit. What in the world regard to the spirit. What in the world regard to the spirit. What in the world does that mean? That language is does that mean? That language is does that mean? That language is actually quite close to the language of actually quite close to the language of actually quite close to the language of spirit spirit spirit in chapter 8 verse 3:18. in chapter 8 verse 3:18. in chapter 8 verse 3:18. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Death in the body, but made alive in the >> Death in the body, but made alive in the >> Death in the body, but made alive in the spirit, about Christ. So, spirit, about Christ. So, spirit, about Christ. So, >> what in the world is going on in there? >> what in the world is going on in there? >> what in the world is going on in there? I mean, I think he's talking about I mean, I think he's talking about I mean, I think he's talking about believers who have died, um who were believers who have died, um who were believers who have died, um who were mistreated, you know, they experienced mistreated, you know, they experienced mistreated, you know, they experienced suffering suffering suffering um in the body, but in the spirit are, um in the body, but in the spirit are, um in the body, but in the spirit are, you know, now vindicated and were always you know, now vindicated and were always you know, now vindicated and were always being vindicated in the spirit. Anyway, being vindicated in the spirit. Anyway, being vindicated in the spirit. Anyway, >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> hard stuff. [laughter] Those are just >> hard stuff. [laughter] Those are just >> hard stuff. [laughter] Those are just tricky, and you can go to tricky, and you can go to tricky, and you can go to commentaries and read pages and pages commentaries and read pages and pages commentaries and read pages and pages and pages. So, uh and pages. So, uh and pages. So, uh if you get kind of them if you get kind of them if you get kind of them stay to the outside of those to say I stay to the outside of those to say I stay to the outside of those to say I know essentially what's going on.

  40. know essentially what's going on. know essentially what's going on. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Five verse 18 verse 22 of chapter three. >> Five verse 18 verse 22 of chapter three. >> Five verse 18 verse 22 of chapter three. But, those those are notorious But, those those are notorious But, those those are notorious cruxes, as they like to call difficult. cruxes, as they like to call difficult. cruxes, as they like to call difficult. >> Yeah, and it's a good reminder for >> Yeah, and it's a good reminder for >> Yeah, and it's a good reminder for people of don't get hung up on the parts people of don't get hung up on the parts people of don't get hung up on the parts that you do know that are clear it that you do know that are clear it that you do know that are clear it because of the parts that are unclear, because of the parts that are unclear, because of the parts that are unclear, uh because of the confusing parts. So, uh because of the confusing parts. So, uh because of the confusing parts. So, as you said, like those before and after as you said, like those before and after as you said, like those before and after parts in in chapter 3, like parts in in chapter 3, like parts in in chapter 3, like those are, you know, it's it's easy to those are, you know, it's it's easy to those are, you know, it's it's easy to read those parts. So, don't start read those parts. So, don't start read those parts. So, don't start confusing yourself about those pieces confusing yourself about those pieces confusing yourself about those pieces just because the sub you know, there's just because the sub you know, there's just because the sub you know, there's something in the middle something in the middle something in the middle Peter starts getting into something that Peter starts getting into something that Peter starts getting into something that he knows what he's talking about and the he knows what he's talking about and the he knows what he's talking about and the people who were reading at the time people who were reading at the time people who were reading at the time might have understood because it might might have understood because it might might have understood because it might have been a conver you know, a talking have been a conver you know, a talking have been a conver you know, a talking point at the time or what not. Now being point at the time or what not. Now being point at the time or what not. Now being so far removed, we're like, "What is he so far removed, we're like, "What is he so far removed, we're like, "What is he getting? Like is he is this this getting? Like is he is this this getting? Like is he is this this >> part of Genesis 6, which is already >> part of Genesis 6, which is already >> part of Genesis 6, which is already really hard to understand, Genesis 6:1-3 really hard to understand, Genesis 6:1-3 really hard to understand, Genesis 6:1-3 or whatever it is. And then maybe first or whatever it is. And then maybe first or whatever it is. And then maybe first Enoch um Enoch um Enoch um took that and went further. So, Jewish took that and went further. So, Jewish took that and went further. So, Jewish thought it doesn't isn't static. So, thought it doesn't isn't static. So, thought it doesn't isn't static. So, it's it's kind of ruminating on texts it's it's kind of ruminating on texts it's it's kind of ruminating on texts ruminate on various things and so it ruminate on various things and so it ruminate on various things and so it might be coming out of that. But if we might be coming out of that. But if we might be coming out of that. But if we can stay with 18 to and 22 and go, "Oh can stay with 18 to and 22 and go, "Oh can stay with 18 to and 22 and go, "Oh yeah, he's telling the story of Jesus yeah, he's telling the story of Jesus yeah, he's telling the story of Jesus and his vindication." So, that we know and his vindication." So, that we know and his vindication." So, that we know cuz I'm what the important word word cuz I'm what the important word word cuz I'm what the important word word between verse between verse between verse uh 18 17 and 18 uh 18 17 and 18 uh 18 17 and 18 for Christ also suffered. Summary

This sermon explores the hopeful message of First Peter, referencing scripture from 1 Peter 1:3-4 to highlight our new birth and incorruptible inheritance in heaven through Christ's resurrection. It emphasizes that this letter offers guidance on living as God's family, particularly amidst suffering, focusing on identity as "living stones" and "humble sheep," and how to treat one another. The practical takeaway is to embrace Christian identity and conduct with hope, even through trials.
