Navigating the Bible Amos. All right. I'm joined today by Danny All right. I'm joined today by Danny Carroll who's going to help us navigate Carroll who's going to help us navigate Carroll who's going to help us navigate the book [music] of Amos. Danny, thanks the book [music] of Amos. Danny, thanks the book [music] of Amos. Danny, thanks for being here. I really appreciate it. for being here. I really appreciate it. for being here. I really appreciate it. >> Well, it's a it's a joy and a privilege >> Well, it's a it's a joy and a privilege >> Well, it's a it's a joy and a privilege to be with you. So, thanks for the to be with you. So, thanks for the to be with you. So, thanks for the invitation. invitation. invitation. >> When I was talking with David Baker um >> When I was talking with David Baker um >> When I was talking with David Baker um about a different book, I was asking him about a different book, I was asking him about a different book, I was asking him about Amos and he said, "Well, you got about Amos and he said, "Well, you got about Amos and he said, "Well, you got to get Danny Carol on to talk about it." to get Danny Carol on to talk about it." to get Danny Carol on to talk about it." So, I'm glad to have you here. So, I So, I'm glad to have you here. So, I So, I'm glad to have you here. So, I wanted to start a little bit differently wanted to start a little bit differently wanted to start a little bit differently because as we were talking uh before we because as we were talking uh before we because as we were talking uh before we started recording, we thought this might started recording, we thought this might started recording, we thought this might be a good place to start. What is it be a good place to start. What is it be a good place to start. What is it about Amos that drew you to want to about Amos that drew you to want to about Amos that drew you to want to spend so much time studying it and spend so much time studying it and spend so much time studying it and wanting to teach about it and write wanting to teach about it and write wanting to teach about it and write about it? about it? about it? >> Well, there's a story behind that and it >> Well, there's a story behind that and it >> Well, there's a story behind that and it actually goes a lot to who I am. I'm actually goes a lot to who I am. I'm actually goes a lot to who I am. I'm half half half >> Guatemalan. >> Guatemalan. >> Guatemalan. >> So, I spent time in Guatemala um growing >> So, I spent time in Guatemala um growing >> So, I spent time in Guatemala um growing up almost every summer growing up. And up almost every summer growing up. And up almost every summer growing up. And then, um then, um then, um my wife and I went to Central America uh my wife and I went to Central America uh my wife and I went to Central America uh in the early 80s and this was a time of in the early 80s and this was a time of in the early 80s and this was a time of civil war. So we spent a year in Costa civil war. So we spent a year in Costa civil war. So we spent a year in Costa Rica which was right next door to Rica which was right next door to Rica which was right next door to Nicaragua where the Saninistas were in Nicaragua where the Saninistas were in Nicaragua where the Saninistas were in power at the time. The Guatemalan Civil power at the time. The Guatemalan Civil power at the time. The Guatemalan Civil War had it started in 1960 and would not War had it started in 1960 and would not War had it started in 1960 and would not end till 1996.
-
end till 1996. end till 1996. And [snorts] I remember I have visuals And [snorts] I remember I have visuals And [snorts] I remember I have visuals from my childhood of some of that. So from my childhood of some of that. So from my childhood of some of that. So anyway, when I when after a year in anyway, when I when after a year in anyway, when I when after a year in Costa Rica, we went to Guatemala and I Costa Rica, we went to Guatemala and I Costa Rica, we went to Guatemala and I taught there in a seminary in Guatemala taught there in a seminary in Guatemala taught there in a seminary in Guatemala City for many many years. Anyway, it was City for many many years. Anyway, it was City for many many years. Anyway, it was during the time of the war and at the during the time of the war and at the during the time of the war and at the time time time uh there was um another u theological uh there was um another u theological uh there was um another u theological movement called liberation theology that movement called liberation theology that movement called liberation theology that some of your listeners may know about. some of your listeners may know about. some of your listeners may know about. >> But um so the goal was to try to as an >> But um so the goal was to try to as an >> But um so the goal was to try to as an Old Testament prof, how does the Old Old Testament prof, how does the Old Old Testament prof, how does the Old Testament deal with issues of war and Testament deal with issues of war and Testament deal with issues of war and poverty poverty poverty >> in a context when that actually is >> in a context when that actually is >> in a context when that actually is happening? So, it's not just an abstract happening? So, it's not just an abstract happening? So, it's not just an abstract idea, but uh Guatemala is overwhelmingly idea, but uh Guatemala is overwhelmingly idea, but uh Guatemala is overwhelmingly poor and [snorts] there was a war in the poor and [snorts] there was a war in the poor and [snorts] there was a war in the mountains. mountains. mountains. >> We weren't fighting in the street like >> We weren't fighting in the street like >> We weren't fighting in the street like that happened in uh Nicaragua and El that happened in uh Nicaragua and El that happened in uh Nicaragua and El Salvador. But, so that's what drew me to Salvador. But, so that's what drew me to Salvador. But, so that's what drew me to Amos. Um it talks a lot about social Amos. Um it talks a lot about social Amos. Um it talks a lot about social justice. It's issues of war and justice. It's issues of war and justice. It's issues of war and judgment. Um, so how what would a an judgment. Um, so how what would a an judgment. Um, so how what would a an evangelical alternative to that more evangelical alternative to that more evangelical alternative to that more left-wing uh uh theology and ideology left-wing uh uh theology and ideology left-wing uh uh theology and ideology look like? So that that's how I started look like? So that that's how I started look like? So that that's how I started Amos. So Amos. So Amos. So >> we're going, you know, it's been, >> we're going, you know, it's been, >> we're going, you know, it's been, you know, uh about 40 years since I've you know, uh about 40 years since I've you know, uh about 40 years since I've been working in the book. So uh that's been working in the book. So uh that's been working in the book. So uh that's how I got into it.
-
how I got into it. how I got into it. >> Yeah. And I'm sure that that's going to >> Yeah. And I'm sure that that's going to >> Yeah. And I'm sure that that's going to color our conversation today because as color our conversation today because as color our conversation today because as you said like Amos, it it does it is it you said like Amos, it it does it is it you said like Amos, it it does it is it reads a little bit differently than a reads a little bit differently than a reads a little bit differently than a lot of the books that we've been lot of the books that we've been lot of the books that we've been spending time in already. And so, and spending time in already. And so, and spending time in already. And so, and that's been a fun part of going through that's been a fun part of going through that's been a fun part of going through this series is seeing how each of the this series is seeing how each of the this series is seeing how each of the prophets I I think a lot of people they prophets I I think a lot of people they prophets I I think a lot of people they think of the prophets and they lump them think of the prophets and they lump them think of the prophets and they lump them together as well, these are just a lot together as well, these are just a lot together as well, these are just a lot of the books about, yeah, some of the books about, yeah, some of the books about, yeah, some prophecies, but also just a lot of God's prophecies, but also just a lot of God's prophecies, but also just a lot of God's judgment against different people or judgment against different people or judgment against different people or against Israel or whatever it is. But against Israel or whatever it is. But against Israel or whatever it is. But really, when you spend time in each really, when you spend time in each really, when you spend time in each book, there is these different nuances. book, there is these different nuances. book, there is these different nuances. And that just and that largely comes And that just and that largely comes And that just and that largely comes from these are different people, from these are different people, from these are different people, different prophets and God is using them different prophets and God is using them different prophets and God is using them to give a message, but they're still a to give a message, but they're still a to give a message, but they're still a pro that they still are their person and pro that they still are their person and pro that they still are their person and they have their different way that they have their different way that they have their different way that they're approaching and God has put a they're approaching and God has put a they're approaching and God has put a different message to different people on different message to different people on different message to different people on their hearts. And so that's why I'm their hearts. And so that's why I'm their hearts. And so that's why I'm excited to dig into Amos today excited to dig into Amos today excited to dig into Amos today specifically to see how it's a little specifically to see how it's a little specifically to see how it's a little bit different than what we've been bit different than what we've been bit different than what we've been reading in the past. I I I just reread reading in the past. I I I just reread reading in the past. I I I just reread it recently and it did strike me. I was it recently and it did strike me. I was it recently and it did strike me. I was like, "Oh, this reads differently than like, "Oh, this reads differently than like, "Oh, this reads differently than Joel or Hosea." And it's just that great Joel or Hosea." And it's just that great Joel or Hosea." And it's just that great reminder that yes, it's it's important reminder that yes, it's it's important reminder that yes, it's it's important to spend time in it. Um to unwrap what to spend time in it. Um to unwrap what to spend time in it. Um to unwrap what God has packaged in this in this in this God has packaged in this in this in this God has packaged in this in this in this in in this case, this nine-chapter book.
-
in in this case, this nine-chapter book. in in this case, this nine-chapter book. So, let's start with the basic details So, let's start with the basic details So, let's start with the basic details then of the book of Amos. Do we know who then of the book of Amos. Do we know who then of the book of Amos. Do we know who wrote the book? It says Amos on it, but wrote the book? It says Amos on it, but wrote the book? It says Amos on it, but do we know who wrote the book of Amos do we know who wrote the book of Amos do we know who wrote the book of Amos and when it was written? And how does and when it was written? And how does and when it was written? And how does knowing these things or maybe not knowing these things or maybe not knowing these things or maybe not knowing these things affect how we read knowing these things affect how we read knowing these things affect how we read the book? the book? the book? >> Yeah, there's a lot of misconceptions. >> Yeah, there's a lot of misconceptions. >> Yeah, there's a lot of misconceptions. Um, Um, Um, so let me just talk about a couple of so let me just talk about a couple of so let me just talk about a couple of them. One, one is we don't know who them. One, one is we don't know who them. One, one is we don't know who actually put pen to paper. So I think actually put pen to paper. So I think actually put pen to paper. So I think it's Amos' voice. Was he using a scribe it's Amos' voice. Was he using a scribe it's Amos' voice. Was he using a scribe or something? We don't know that. So or something? We don't know that. So or something? We don't know that. So >> we say about who wrote it. I think it's >> we say about who wrote it. I think it's >> we say about who wrote it. I think it's Amos' voice. Uh, Amos' voice. Uh, Amos' voice. Uh, >> in the ancient world, very few people >> in the ancient world, very few people >> in the ancient world, very few people knew how to write. So, but he I think knew how to write. So, but he I think knew how to write. So, but he I think was wealthy enough where he could hire a was wealthy enough where he could hire a was wealthy enough where he could hire a scribe. [gasps] scribe. [gasps] scribe. [gasps] >> And that leads me to uh who he was. I >> And that leads me to uh who he was. I >> And that leads me to uh who he was. I mean, so it says [snorts] that he u was mean, so it says [snorts] that he u was mean, so it says [snorts] that he u was a a shepherd. a a shepherd. a a shepherd. This is in chapter 7 This is in chapter 7 This is in chapter 7 >> and they was an owner of sycamore fig >> and they was an owner of sycamore fig >> and they was an owner of sycamore fig trees.
-
trees. trees. >> But the thing is is the word for >> But the thing is is the word for >> But the thing is is the word for shepherd there uh is not your common shepherd there uh is not your common shepherd there uh is not your common word. So word. So word. So um he um he um he that word actually uh is a word that that word actually uh is a word that that word actually uh is a word that means he also had cattle. It's it's a means he also had cattle. It's it's a means he also had cattle. It's it's a broader type word broader type word broader type word >> and so uh he had sheep. Uh you see that >> and so uh he had sheep. Uh you see that >> and so uh he had sheep. Uh you see that from the opening verse of the book but from the opening verse of the book but from the opening verse of the book but even there that's not the common word. even there that's not the common word. even there that's not the common word. So the the word uh in uh chapter one at So the the word uh in uh chapter one at So the the word uh in uh chapter one at the beginning is a word that that uh the beginning is a word that that uh the beginning is a word that that uh only appears u one other time in the only appears u one other time in the only appears u one other time in the whole old testament whole old testament whole old testament and in the passage it appears it is and in the passage it appears it is and in the passage it appears it is referring to a shepherd quote unquote uh referring to a shepherd quote unquote uh referring to a shepherd quote unquote uh who had 100,000 sheep. So it's not who had 100,000 sheep. So it's not who had 100,000 sheep. So it's not >> your poor little shepherd on the >> your poor little shepherd on the >> your poor little shepherd on the [laughter] the hill which is kind of how [laughter] the hill which is kind of how [laughter] the hill which is kind of how people portray him. people portray him. people portray him. >> That's a lot of sheep. Yeah. >> That's a lot of sheep. Yeah. >> That's a lot of sheep. Yeah. >> A lot of sheep. Uh, and that's another >> A lot of sheep. Uh, and that's another >> A lot of sheep. Uh, and that's another story. Uh, he apparently has cattle and story. Uh, he apparently has cattle and story. Uh, he apparently has cattle and sycamore trees don't grow in the region sycamore trees don't grow in the region sycamore trees don't grow in the region of TCOA.
-
of TCOA. of TCOA. >> So, he may have had multiple properties. >> So, he may have had multiple properties. >> So, he may have had multiple properties. So, he is a man of substance. So, he is a man of substance. So, he is a man of substance. >> And that might be the reason why when he >> And that might be the reason why when he >> And that might be the reason why when he shows up at the temple at Bethl in shows up at the temple at Bethl in shows up at the temple at Bethl in chapter 7 that they that chapter 7 that they that chapter 7 that they that uh he has an impact because he is a man uh he has an impact because he is a man uh he has an impact because he is a man to be reckoned with. to be reckoned with. to be reckoned with. >> And so, that's why they they want him to >> And so, that's why they they want him to >> And so, that's why they they want him to be quiet and to go away. So, uh, be quiet and to go away. So, uh, be quiet and to go away. So, uh, [snorts] [snorts] [snorts] he knows that an enemy is coming in the he knows that an enemy is coming in the he knows that an enemy is coming in the judgment of God. We know historically judgment of God. We know historically judgment of God. We know historically that would be Assyria just a couple that would be Assyria just a couple that would be Assyria just a couple decades later, but he doesn't even decades later, but he doesn't even decades later, but he doesn't even mention Assyria. So, he knows judgment mention Assyria. So, he knows judgment mention Assyria. So, he knows judgment is coming. He doesn't know exactly when is coming. He doesn't know exactly when is coming. He doesn't know exactly when or who. Uh, in the book, this is just or who. Uh, in the book, this is just or who. Uh, in the book, this is just called the enemy, right? So, or an called the enemy, right? So, or an called the enemy, right? So, or an invader. uh so he would be uh mid uh 8th invader. uh so he would be uh mid uh 8th invader. uh so he would be uh mid uh 8th century so the mid700s uh before Christ century so the mid700s uh before Christ century so the mid700s uh before Christ that would be when be speaking that would be when be speaking that would be when be speaking >> okay so I I I think that's it's helpful >> okay so I I I think that's it's helpful >> okay so I I I think that's it's helpful to look at who Amos was. I think I think to look at who Amos was. I think I think to look at who Amos was. I think I think you're right. We get these pictures or you're right. We get these pictures or you're right. We get these pictures or these misconceptions in our heads these misconceptions in our heads these misconceptions in our heads sometimes about who the prophets may sometimes about who the prophets may sometimes about who the prophets may have been, but it's it's helpful to have been, but it's it's helpful to have been, but it's it's helpful to think about because one of the questions think about because one of the questions think about because one of the questions I haven't I don't think we've actually I haven't I don't think we've actually I haven't I don't think we've actually brought this up in these conversations brought this up in these conversations brought this up in these conversations is these people these prophets were is these people these prophets were is these people these prophets were asked to go and give these messages to asked to go and give these messages to asked to go and give these messages to people. And in my head, I'm thinking people. And in my head, I'm thinking people. And in my head, I'm thinking through the logistics of that. they go through the logistics of that. they go through the logistics of that. they go to, you know, a place or they're writing to, you know, a place or they're writing to, you know, a place or they're writing a or whatever and they say, "I have a a or whatever and they say, "I have a a or whatever and they say, "I have a message from God for you." Like, message from God for you." Like, message from God for you." Like, [laughter]
-
[laughter] [laughter] a a a why would they listen and b how do they why would they listen and b how do they why would they listen and b how do they know exactly where they're going to go know exactly where they're going to go know exactly where they're going to go and who to tell? [laughter] and who to tell? [laughter] and who to tell? [laughter] >> Yeah. And the interesting thing is uh >> Yeah. And the interesting thing is uh >> Yeah. And the interesting thing is uh Tako is in the south in Judah and he Tako is in the south in Judah and he Tako is in the south in Judah and he ministers in the north uh in the ministers in the north uh in the ministers in the north uh in the northern kingdom in Israel. So that's northern kingdom in Israel. So that's northern kingdom in Israel. So that's one of the reasons why the the high one of the reasons why the the high one of the reasons why the the high priest in chapter 7 will tell him to go priest in chapter 7 will tell him to go priest in chapter 7 will tell him to go back to where he came from. back to where he came from. back to where he came from. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Uh because the thought would be what >> Uh because the thought would be what >> Uh because the thought would be what gives you the right to give us this gives you the right to give us this gives you the right to give us this message? You're not even from here. message? You're not even from here. message? You're not even from here. >> So uh that's that's the other >> So uh that's that's the other >> So uh that's that's the other complication. And so when when Amziah complication. And so when when Amziah complication. And so when when Amziah tells him to go back and he says and tells him to go back and he says and tells him to go back and he says and prophesy over there, his response is prophesy over there, his response is prophesy over there, his response is well you know I'm not a prophet or the well you know I'm not a prophet or the well you know I'm not a prophet or the son of a prophet. It's kind of like no son of a prophet. It's kind of like no son of a prophet. It's kind of like no skin off my back. you know, I'm just skin off my back. you know, I'm just skin off my back. you know, I'm just going to go back to where to what I was going to go back to where to what I was going to go back to where to what I was doing, but this is the word of God. So, doing, but this is the word of God. So, doing, but this is the word of God. So, it's a it's apparently a short ministry, it's a it's apparently a short ministry, it's a it's apparently a short ministry, unlike Isaiah that lasted decades. unlike Isaiah that lasted decades. unlike Isaiah that lasted decades. Apparently, it's a short uh ministry, Apparently, it's a short uh ministry, Apparently, it's a short uh ministry, and then he just goes back uh we think, and then he just goes back uh we think, and then he just goes back uh we think, we're not really sure, back to Judah.
-
we're not really sure, back to Judah. we're not really sure, back to Judah. >> So, how would you describe the book of >> So, how would you describe the book of >> So, how would you describe the book of Amos then in one sentence? >> That's a hard one. >> That's a hard one. >> It usually is hard. Yeah. [laughter] >> It usually is hard. Yeah. [laughter] >> It usually is hard. Yeah. [laughter] >> Yeah. Uh I think we have to um maybe and >> Yeah. Uh I think we have to um maybe and >> Yeah. Uh I think we have to um maybe and we can get to this later. Uh we can get to this later. Uh we can get to this later. Uh >> it's okay if it's a run-on sentence, by >> it's okay if it's a run-on sentence, by >> it's okay if it's a run-on sentence, by the way. the way. the way. >> Okay. [laughter] >> Okay. [laughter] >> Okay. [laughter] >> Uh he's fighting over the person of God. >> Uh he's fighting over the person of God. >> Uh he's fighting over the person of God. I mean, so this is this is crucial. I mean, so this is this is crucial. I mean, so this is this is crucial. The argument is who is God? The argument is who is God? The argument is who is God? Um and what's he like? So he's not Um and what's he like? So he's not Um and what's he like? So he's not really dealing with uh idolatry. I mean really dealing with uh idolatry. I mean really dealing with uh idolatry. I mean it comes up in a few u ways in the book it comes up in a few u ways in the book it comes up in a few u ways in the book but it's not like Hosea who's about kind but it's not like Hosea who's about kind but it's not like Hosea who's about kind of the same time and Hosea is very of the same time and Hosea is very of the same time and Hosea is very explicitly attacking uh the worship of explicitly attacking uh the worship of explicitly attacking uh the worship of Baal. Uh Amos will hint at some idolatry Baal. Uh Amos will hint at some idolatry Baal. Uh Amos will hint at some idolatry but that's not his argument. He is but that's not his argument. He is but that's not his argument. He is arguing over arguing over arguing over what they what they know and what they what they what they know and what they what they what they know and what they believe about the God of Israel Yahweh.
-
believe about the God of Israel Yahweh. believe about the God of Israel Yahweh. So that's the battleground So that's the battleground So that's the battleground >> and we'll we'll get to that a bit later. >> and we'll we'll get to that a bit later. >> and we'll we'll get to that a bit later. So you know if I were to describe the So you know if I were to describe the So you know if I were to describe the book in a sentence book in a sentence book in a sentence um it would be whereas some people say um it would be whereas some people say um it would be whereas some people say well he's all about social critique. well he's all about social critique. well he's all about social critique. Well there's a reason behind that. So Well there's a reason behind that. So Well there's a reason behind that. So that's actually a symptom of the that's actually a symptom of the that's actually a symptom of the problem. It's not the problem itself. So problem. It's not the problem itself. So problem. It's not the problem itself. So the idea is uh he's arguing over the the idea is uh he's arguing over the the idea is uh he's arguing over the person of God and and just the person of God and and just the person of God and and just the implications of what that means for implications of what that means for implications of what that means for their social life uh but also their their social life uh but also their their social life uh but also their future. future. future. >> Okay. So as we me as we mentioned >> Okay. So as we me as we mentioned >> Okay. So as we me as we mentioned earlier there's about there's nine earlier there's about there's nine earlier there's about there's nine chapters in the book of Amos. So how chapters in the book of Amos. So how chapters in the book of Amos. So how would you describe then the trajectory would you describe then the trajectory would you describe then the trajectory of this book? Where's this book going of this book? Where's this book going of this book? Where's this book going from chapter 1 through chapter 9? from chapter 1 through chapter 9? from chapter 1 through chapter 9? Well, if you were to look at chapter 1 Well, if you were to look at chapter 1 Well, if you were to look at chapter 1 verse two um and if you understand uh verse two um and if you understand uh verse two um and if you understand uh the ancient world and what's going on the ancient world and what's going on the ancient world and what's going on that defines the the trajectory. So in that defines the the trajectory. So in that defines the the trajectory. So in one two it says Yahweh or the Lord roars one two it says Yahweh or the Lord roars one two it says Yahweh or the Lord roars from Zion and thunders from Jerusalem.
-
from Zion and thunders from Jerusalem. from Zion and thunders from Jerusalem. Well that's in the south. Well that's in the south. Well that's in the south. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Zion is where the temple of of Yahweh >> Zion is where the temple of of Yahweh >> Zion is where the temple of of Yahweh is. Jerusalem is the capital of the is. Jerusalem is the capital of the is. Jerusalem is the capital of the southern kingdom. So basically what he's southern kingdom. So basically what he's southern kingdom. So basically what he's saying from the very beginning is God's saying from the very beginning is God's saying from the very beginning is God's not here. not here. not here. God is speaking from Judah. God is speaking from Judah. God is speaking from Judah. >> So what he does in the very first line >> So what he does in the very first line >> So what he does in the very first line of the book is to begin to deconstruct of the book is to begin to deconstruct of the book is to begin to deconstruct their whole understanding of God and their whole understanding of God and their whole understanding of God and God's relationship to Israel. So when God's relationship to Israel. So when God's relationship to Israel. So when you get to chapter 9 you get to chapter 9 you get to chapter 9 uh verse 11 uh verse 11 uh verse 11 uh he talks about how God will raise up uh he talks about how God will raise up uh he talks about how God will raise up the uh the fallen tabernacle of David. the uh the fallen tabernacle of David. the uh the fallen tabernacle of David. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Which is the southern kingdom. So what >> Which is the southern kingdom. So what >> Which is the southern kingdom. So what he's saying is from chapters one through he's saying is from chapters one through he's saying is from chapters one through the first part of chapter 9 he is just the first part of chapter 9 he is just the first part of chapter 9 he is just dismantling all their pretense and all dismantling all their pretense and all dismantling all their pretense and all their religious activity. And at the end their religious activity. And at the end their religious activity. And at the end of the book, what he's saying is the of the book, what he's saying is the of the book, what he's saying is the future is not u with Samaria and the future is not u with Samaria and the future is not u with Samaria and the northern kingdom. The future lies in the northern kingdom. The future lies in the northern kingdom. The future lies in the south and the restoration will be south and the restoration will be south and the restoration will be connected to the southern kingdom. So connected to the southern kingdom. So connected to the southern kingdom. So what you find if you wanted to do the what you find if you wanted to do the what you find if you wanted to do the trajectory is this systematic trajectory is this systematic trajectory is this systematic >> in his own literary style >> in his own literary style >> in his own literary style uh dismantling uh dismantling uh dismantling of a whole worldview.
-
of a whole worldview. of a whole worldview. >> Yeah. in its religion, its politics, and >> Yeah. in its religion, its politics, and >> Yeah. in its religion, its politics, and its social life. Um, and announcing its its social life. Um, and announcing its its social life. Um, and announcing its judgment basically. judgment basically. judgment basically. >> Yeah, I think that's it's it's helpful. >> Yeah, I think that's it's it's helpful. >> Yeah, I think that's it's it's helpful. It's it's it's not it's not that he is It's it's it's not it's not that he is It's it's it's not it's not that he is making these notes to all these making these notes to all these making these notes to all these different nations and people groups. is different nations and people groups. is different nations and people groups. is focusing in and he's spending this time focusing in and he's spending this time focusing in and he's spending this time as you said to to unpack as you said to to unpack as you said to to unpack what has been happening with the people what has been happening with the people what has been happening with the people of Israel. And I I find that um it's of Israel. And I I find that um it's of Israel. And I I find that um it's it's been an interesting time to go it's been an interesting time to go it's been an interesting time to go through in reading through the prophets through in reading through the prophets through in reading through the prophets and I've had these conversations with and I've had these conversations with and I've had these conversations with with all these different guests. We've with all these different guests. We've with all these different guests. We've been talking about the prophets cuz been talking about the prophets cuz been talking about the prophets cuz there are some that are focused more there are some that are focused more there are some that are focused more specifically on Israel and there are specifically on Israel and there are specifically on Israel and there are some that are focused more specifically some that are focused more specifically some that are focused more specifically on the judgment of the other nations. on the judgment of the other nations. on the judgment of the other nations. And um so I I it's it's kind of like a And um so I I it's it's kind of like a And um so I I it's it's kind of like a we get this back and forth sometimes of we get this back and forth sometimes of we get this back and forth sometimes of like is this a book that's about the like is this a book that's about the like is this a book that's about the other nations? Is this a book about other nations? Is this a book about other nations? Is this a book about Israel? Is this a book about Israel and Israel? Is this a book about Israel and Israel? Is this a book about Israel and the other nations? What are we talking the other nations? What are we talking the other nations? What are we talking about here? And this one really is a about here? And this one really is a about here? And this one really is a honing in on Israel. Is that right?
-
honing in on Israel. Is that right? honing in on Israel. Is that right? >> Yes. But he also connects it to the >> Yes. But he also connects it to the >> Yes. But he also connects it to the nations. So chapters 1 and two, you get nations. So chapters 1 and two, you get nations. So chapters 1 and two, you get the oracles against the nations for the oracles against the nations for the oracles against the nations for three sins, no four. three sins, no four. three sins, no four. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Well, that's also how he begins the >> Well, that's also how he begins the >> Well, that's also how he begins the judgment on Judah. judgment on Judah. judgment on Judah. >> And then it dives in. Yeah. >> And then it dives in. Yeah. >> And then it dives in. Yeah. >> And then he that's how he begins one on >> And then he that's how he begins one on >> And then he that's how he begins one on Israel in in 26. So but what he's saying Israel in in 26. So but what he's saying Israel in in 26. So but what he's saying is [snorts] what he what he condemns the is [snorts] what he what he condemns the is [snorts] what he what he condemns the other nations for is their cruelty and other nations for is their cruelty and other nations for is their cruelty and warfare. Mhm. warfare. Mhm. warfare. Mhm. >> When he the violence >> When he the violence >> When he the violence >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> He turns to Israel beginning in chapter >> He turns to Israel beginning in chapter >> He turns to Israel beginning in chapter 2 6. Now he's talking about 2 6. Now he's talking about 2 6. Now he's talking about social violence. social violence. social violence. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> It's not the violence of their armies. >> It's not the violence of their armies. >> It's not the violence of their armies. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> It's the violence against themselves. >> It's the violence against themselves. >> It's the violence against themselves. >> So that should resonate even with this >> So that should resonate even with this >> So that should resonate even with this country where we see there's violence country where we see there's violence country where we see there's violence and wars, you know, around the world. and wars, you know, around the world. and wars, you know, around the world. But what we're witnessing in this But what we're witnessing in this But what we're witnessing in this country is all kinds of social violence. country is all kinds of social violence. country is all kinds of social violence. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Um and that's what he is attacking uh Um and that's what he is attacking uh Um and that's what he is attacking uh within Israel even as he dismantles within Israel even as he dismantles within Israel even as he dismantles um their military pretense there. We um their military pretense there. We um their military pretense there. We would call their their nationalism. I would call their their nationalism. I would call their their nationalism. I mean if you go to chapter 2 uh beginning mean if you go to chapter 2 uh beginning mean if you go to chapter 2 uh beginning in verse 14 to the end in verse 14 to the end in verse 14 to the end >> you know he he this is again some of the >> you know he he this is again some of the >> you know he he this is again some of the literary stuff but he lists seven literary stuff but he lists seven literary stuff but he lists seven different kinds of soldiers that are different kinds of soldiers that are different kinds of soldiers that are running away because in defeat. So what running away because in defeat. So what running away because in defeat. So what you have is, you know, seven types of you have is, you know, seven types of you have is, you know, seven types of soldiers. This is perfect defeat and soldiers. This is perfect defeat and soldiers. This is perfect defeat and humiliation because they're running away humiliation because they're running away humiliation because they're running away naked. Yeah. I mean, so it and and in naked. Yeah. I mean, so it and and in naked. Yeah. I mean, so it and and in chapter three, the fortresses are going
-
chapter three, the fortresses are going chapter three, the fortresses are going to be destroyed. So he is just totally to be destroyed. So he is just totally to be destroyed. So he is just totally dismantling them. And what you find um dismantling them. And what you find um dismantling them. And what you find um this may be more information than you this may be more information than you this may be more information than you want. want. want. >> I'll take it, please. [laughter] >> I'll take it, please. [laughter] >> I'll take it, please. [laughter] >> In in in chapter three, um you know, >> In in in chapter three, um you know, >> In in in chapter three, um you know, verse 9, he's actually calling the other verse 9, he's actually calling the other verse 9, he's actually calling the other nations to come watch the destruction. M nations to come watch the destruction. M nations to come watch the destruction. M >> northern kingdom. So the so the the >> northern kingdom. So the so the the >> northern kingdom. So the so the the kingdoms that he's describing as being kingdoms that he's describing as being kingdoms that he's describing as being judged in chapters 1 and two now become judged in chapters 1 and two now become judged in chapters 1 and two now become witnesses witnesses witnesses to the judgment upon Israel. to the judgment upon Israel. to the judgment upon Israel. >> So it's a very um and at the end of the >> So it's a very um and at the end of the >> So it's a very um and at the end of the book uh chapter 9:12 the nations will book uh chapter 9:12 the nations will book uh chapter 9:12 the nations will come to know the Lord. come to know the Lord. come to know the Lord. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> So it's a very interesting interplay >> So it's a very interesting interplay >> So it's a very interesting interplay between the condemnation of the nations between the condemnation of the nations between the condemnation of the nations because of their violence. because of their violence. because of their violence. >> Yeah. the condemnation of Israel for its >> Yeah. the condemnation of Israel for its >> Yeah. the condemnation of Israel for its internal violence. internal violence. internal violence. >> The judgment will be an invasion >> The judgment will be an invasion >> The judgment will be an invasion >> and at the end there'll be kind of a >> and at the end there'll be kind of a >> and at the end there'll be kind of a worldwide u uh belief in God.
-
worldwide u uh belief in God. worldwide u uh belief in God. >> We've already touched on some of these a >> We've already touched on some of these a >> We've already touched on some of these a little bit, but but I want to give you little bit, but but I want to give you little bit, but but I want to give you space here to talk about the major space here to talk about the major space here to talk about the major themes that we find in this book. And I themes that we find in this book. And I themes that we find in this book. And I always like approaching it this way. How always like approaching it this way. How always like approaching it this way. How does knowing these themes as as we talk does knowing these themes as as we talk does knowing these themes as as we talk about them? How does knowing them in about them? How does knowing them in about them? How does knowing them in advance kind of help you read the book? advance kind of help you read the book? advance kind of help you read the book? >> Well, you know what I have to do when I >> Well, you know what I have to do when I >> Well, you know what I have to do when I teach this book is reorient how people teach this book is reorient how people teach this book is reorient how people think about faith. think about faith. think about faith. >> Um Amos is known for being this uh >> Um Amos is known for being this uh >> Um Amos is known for being this uh really harsh social critic. really harsh social critic. really harsh social critic. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> But what you find in the book of Amos is >> But what you find in the book of Amos is >> But what you find in the book of Amos is that he will couple the social critique. that he will couple the social critique. that he will couple the social critique. He's not the only one that does this. He's not the only one that does this. He's not the only one that does this. Isaiah would be another great example. Isaiah would be another great example. Isaiah would be another great example. It does the same. They couple uh social It does the same. They couple uh social It does the same. They couple uh social critique with the critique of the critique with the critique of the critique with the critique of the worship. worship. worship. Now, the normal thing in evangelical Now, the normal thing in evangelical Now, the normal thing in evangelical circles is, "Oh, we need to be we need circles is, "Oh, we need to be we need circles is, "Oh, we need to be we need to care for the poor." Okay, that's to care for the poor." Okay, that's to care for the poor." Okay, that's that's true. that's true. that's true. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> But what you're seeing in in the Old >> But what you're seeing in in the Old >> But what you're seeing in in the Old Testament and the prophets are hitting Testament and the prophets are hitting Testament and the prophets are hitting at it is because they they wed the two.
-
at it is because they they wed the two. at it is because they they wed the two. If you do not do social justice, If you do not do social justice, If you do not do social justice, you do not know God. M you do not know God. M you do not know God. M >> so uh you may be very religiously >> so uh you may be very religiously >> so uh you may be very religiously active. I mean in the book of Amos active. I mean in the book of Amos active. I mean in the book of Amos they're very active. They're filling the they're very active. They're filling the they're very active. They're filling the temples and we can look at some passages temples and we can look at some passages temples and we can look at some passages later if you want. But um what he's later if you want. But um what he's later if you want. But um what he's saying is that you're worshiping another saying is that you're worshiping another saying is that you're worshiping another god. I mean, you might call him Yahweh, god. I mean, you might call him Yahweh, god. I mean, you might call him Yahweh, but the very fact that your society but the very fact that your society but the very fact that your society functions the way it does, the very fact functions the way it does, the very fact functions the way it does, the very fact that you have this misplaced that you have this misplaced that you have this misplaced nationalism, nationalism, nationalism, >> um, you are selfdeceived and your selfde >> um, you are selfdeceived and your selfde >> um, you are selfdeceived and your selfde deception is destructive deception is destructive deception is destructive and God will reject this religion even and God will reject this religion even and God will reject this religion even if it's in his name. You know, the the if it's in his name. You know, the the if it's in his name. You know, the the best example of this would be u in the best example of this would be u in the best example of this would be u in the book of Ezekiel where he just finally book of Ezekiel where he just finally book of Ezekiel where he just finally says, "I'm done. I'm out." says, "I'm done. I'm out." says, "I'm done. I'm out." >> And he leaves the temple. And so the >> And he leaves the temple. And so the >> And he leaves the temple. And so the final judgment will be the destruction final judgment will be the destruction final judgment will be the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. I mean, it's of the temple in Jerusalem. I mean, it's of the temple in Jerusalem. I mean, it's the same thing you see going on here.

the same thing you see going on here. the same thing you see going on here. >> The problem is they don't understand God >> The problem is they don't understand God >> The problem is they don't understand God even if they worship him because they even if they worship him because they even if they worship him because they they're worshiping a God that they've they're worshiping a God that they've they're worshiping a God that they've created. M created. M created. M >> now if I could give an example I mean >> now if I could give an example I mean >> now if I could give an example I mean it'd be like if you look around at you it'd be like if you look around at you it'd be like if you look around at you know um you're in California so know um you're in California so know um you're in California so >> how many different Jesuses can you find >> how many different Jesuses can you find >> how many different Jesuses can you find on a Sunday morning? [laughter] on a Sunday morning? [laughter] on a Sunday morning? [laughter] >> Sure. >> Sure. >> Sure. >> Okay. So the question is who is the real >> Okay. So the question is who is the real >> Okay. So the question is who is the real Jesus? Jesus? Jesus? >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Is it the Jesus of Hollywood? Is it the >> Is it the Jesus of Hollywood? Is it the >> Is it the Jesus of Hollywood? Is it the Jesus, you know, of the Anglican church? Jesus, you know, of the Anglican church? Jesus, you know, of the Anglican church? Who is the real Jesus? That becomes the Who is the real Jesus? That becomes the Who is the real Jesus? That becomes the debate. debate. debate. >> That's what you're seeing in the >> That's what you're seeing in the >> That's what you're seeing in the prophets. And what they're saying is you prophets. And what they're saying is you prophets. And what they're saying is you can't separate can't separate can't separate your social life from your view of God. your social life from your view of God. your social life from your view of God. Uh because once you do and you Uh because once you do and you Uh because once you do and you compartmentalize those things, you begin compartmentalize those things, you begin compartmentalize those things, you begin to distort God.

to distort God. to distort God. >> You will create him. Uh you'll go, if we >> You will create him. Uh you'll go, if we >> You will create him. Yeah. Right. is you and I I I always Yeah. Right. is you and I I I always Yeah. Right. is you and I I I always think as we've been walking through this think as we've been walking through this think as we've been walking through this series from Genesis now into Amos is we series from Genesis now into Amos is we series from Genesis now into Amos is we have this story of God have this story of God have this story of God with his family, God with these these with his family, God with these these with his family, God with these these people that he says you are my people people that he says you are my people people that he says you are my people and all of the trials and tribulations and all of the trials and tribulations and all of the trials and tribulations they've been through and God being the they've been through and God being the they've been through and God being the faithful God always there faithful God always there faithful God always there and yet he you know and and then we have and yet he you know and and then we have and yet he you know and and then we have the kingdom with David and then we have, the kingdom with David and then we have, the kingdom with David and then we have, you know, all of the division that comes you know, all of the division that comes you know, all of the division that comes thereafter.

thereafter. thereafter. And then here you have God saying, "You And then here you have God saying, "You And then here you have God saying, "You don't even know me anymore." don't even know me anymore." don't even know me anymore." And that's the sad part that we've And that's the sad part that we've And that's the sad part that we've gotten to again as we've gone through gotten to again as we've gone through gotten to again as we've gone through people wanting to build calves and people wanting to build calves and people wanting to build calves and worship, you know, like. And here's a sticky one. If you get uh to verse 18 of sticky one. If you get uh to verse 18 of sticky one. If you get uh to verse 18 of chapter 5, chapter 5, chapter 5, >> woe to you who long for the day of the >> woe to you who long for the day of the >> woe to you who long for the day of the Lord. Lord. So, you know, in this country, you hear So, you know, in this country, you hear So, you know, in this country, you hear about Christian nationalism. about Christian nationalism. about Christian nationalism. Um, and that's a sticky subject. It's a Um, and that's a sticky subject. It's a Um, and that's a sticky subject. It's a complicated one. Yeah. As you know, complicated one. Yeah. As you know, complicated one. Yeah. As you know, >> but that's what they had. A a >> but that's what they had. A a >> but that's what they had. Like a lion only to meet a bear. Like a lion only to meet a bear. Like [laughter] [laughter] [laughter] he's painting that picture pretty he's painting that picture pretty he's painting that picture pretty starkly.

starkly. starkly. >> Yeah. You you you can't run basically. >> Yeah. You you you can't run basically. >> Yeah. You you you can't run basically. You can't run and you can't hide. You have to gets the implications. You have to gets the implications. You have to understand the ancient world. But he understand the ancient world. But he understand the ancient world. I mean, Jeroboam, that he's conspiring. I mean, he's he's he's reading Amos he's he's he's reading Amos he's he's he's reading Amos politically and not just religiously as politically and not just religiously as politically and not just religiously as as he should actually. And then what you as he should actually. And then what you as he should actually. And then what you can see how he just shows the can see how he just shows the can see how he just shows the nationalism nationalism nationalism um in in verse 13. um in in verse 13. um in in verse 13. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Uh the pri the high priest says to Amos, >> Uh the pri the high priest says to Amos, >> Uh the pri the high priest says to Amos, "Don't prophesy anymore at Bethl. So, um, you know, which is a bit >> Yeah. So, um, you know, which is a bit >> Yeah. So, um, you know, which is a bit of a self-sacrifice because he's putting of a self-sacrifice because he's putting of a self-sacrifice because he's putting himself out there, as we would say, um, himself out there, as we would say, um, himself out there, as we would say, um, across the border. And so, that's why across the border. And so, that's why across the border. And so, that's why the pro the priest will say, you know, the pro the priest will say, you know, the pro the priest will say, you know, go back to where you came from. But you go back to where you came from. But you go back to where you came from. But you can see that the high priest has a can see that the high priest has a can see that the high priest has a skewed view because he's saying, earn skewed view because he's saying, earn skewed view because he's saying, earn your earn your bread in the south. I your earn your bread in the south. I your earn your bread in the south. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. We've talked quite a bit about what this We've talked quite a bit about what this We've talked quite a bit about what this book teaches us about ourselves. We talked about the view our worship. We talked about the real Jesus and whatnot, but but I wanted real Jesus and whatnot, but but I wanted real Jesus and whatnot, but but I wanted to open this up to you. Is there to open this up to you. Is there anything else that you wanted to share anything else that you wanted to share anything else that you wanted to share about what this book teaches us about about what this book teaches us about about what this book teaches us about people, about ourselves? people, about ourselves? people, about ourselves? >> Wow. >> Wow. >> Wow. I think the thing it teaches us is I've I think the thing it teaches us is I've I think the thing it teaches us is I've kind of I've kind of beat the drum on kind of I've kind of beat the drum on kind of I've kind of beat the drum on this. this. this. >> I love it. >> I love it. >> I love it. >> It is the selfdeception. >> It is the selfdeception. >> It is the selfdeception. >> Yeah. Um, >> Yeah. Um, >> Yeah. Um, you know, I mean, you can see how God, you know, I mean, you can see how God, you know, I mean, you can see how God, it's visceral his rejection of the it's visceral his rejection of the it's visceral his rejection of the religion. If you go to uh chapter 5, 21, religion. If you go to uh chapter 5, 21, religion. If you go to uh chapter 5, 21, I hate, I despise, I hate, I despise, I hate, I despise, >> I'm not going to listen to you. And then >> I'm not going to listen to you. And then >> I'm not going to listen to you. And then in verse 24, this is a verse that's most in verse 24, this is a verse that's most in verse 24, this is a verse that's most people will know if they know anything people will know if they know anything people will know if they know anything about Amos about let justice roll down. about Amos about let justice roll down. about Amos about let justice roll down. [laughter] down in a little bit. [laughter] down in a little bit. [laughter] Are there any [snorts] We've mentioned Are there any [snorts] We've mentioned Are there any [snorts] We've mentioned too how Amos isn't the most fun book to too how Amos isn't the most fun book to too how Amos isn't the most fun book to read necessarily. It's not preached read necessarily. It's not preached read necessarily. It's not preached through the most. So So this question through the most. So So this question through the most. In other words, parts out in the book? In other words, parts out in the book? In other words, parts that are particularly hard to read or that are particularly hard to read or that are particularly hard to read or confusing um that are worth making note confusing um that are worth making note confusing um that are worth making note of. of. of. >> Yeah, I think we've kind of hit on them. >> Yeah, I think we've kind of hit on them. >> Yeah, I think we've kind of hit on them. But what um what you find in the Old Testament is what you find in the Old Testament is what you find in the Old Testament is that you cannot have justice without that you cannot have justice without that you cannot have justice without judgment. Now we do this in our judgment. Now we do this in our judgment. Now we do this in our societies. I mean someone kills societies. I mean someone kills societies. Uh, and as you said too, there is, you Uh, and as you said too, there is, you Uh, and as you said too, there is, you know, a small part of Amos does have know, a small part of Amos does have know, a small part of Amos does have this message of hope as well. There's this message of hope as well. There's this message of hope as well. There's there's all of this reality of judgment, there's all of this reality of judgment, there's all of this reality of judgment, but there's also a promise of hope. And but there's also a promise of hope. And but there's also a promise of hope. And that and that's what we see a little bit that and that's what we see a little bit that and that's what we see a little bit in nine with this promise of in nine with this promise of in nine with this promise of restoration. In that day, I will restore restoration. In that day, I will restore restoration. In that day, I will restore the fallen house of David. Um, so and the fallen house of David.
