But don't let these minor prophets. But don't let these minor prophets. But don't let these terms major and minor, don't let them terms major and minor, don't let them terms major and minor, don't let them color your view of these next books, color your view of these next books, color your view of these next books, because the minor prophets have a lot to because the minor prophets have a lot to because the minor prophets have a lot to say. In fact, this conversation on Hosea say. In fact, this conversation on Hosea say. In fact, this conversation on Hosea has been one of my favorites. Honestly, has been one of my favorites. Honestly, has been one of my favorites. Honestly, I had not spent much time in Hosea I had not spent much time in Hosea I had not spent much time in Hosea before, but man, did rereading it and before, but man, did rereading it and before, but man, did rereading it and spending time spending time spending time prepping for this conversation really prepping for this conversation really prepping for this conversation really impact me. Hosea is yes, another prophet impact me. Hosea is yes, another prophet impact me. Hosea is yes, another prophet trying to warn Israel of the coming trying to warn Israel of the coming trying to warn Israel of the coming judgment of the Lord, but the approach judgment of the Lord, but the approach judgment of the Lord, but the approach Hosea takes hits home in a fresh way. To

All right, Dr. Dwayne Garrett, thank you All right, Dr. Dwayne Garrett, thank you for joining us today to help us to for joining us today to help us to for joining us today to help us to navigate through the book of Hosea. navigate through the book of Hosea. navigate through the book of Hosea. We've now transitioned out of the major We've now transitioned out of the major We've now transitioned out of the major prophets and we're getting into a prophets and we're getting into a prophets and we're getting into a section of the minor prophets that I I I section of the minor prophets that I I I section of the minor prophets that I I I I'm excited for cuz I think that this I'm excited for cuz I think that this I'm excited for cuz I think that this section of the Bible, I think a lot of section of the Bible, I think a lot of section of the Bible, I think a lot of people know at least a little bit about people know at least a little bit about people know at least a little bit about Ezekiel or or Daniel, Isaiah, and then Ezekiel or or Daniel, Isaiah, and then Ezekiel or or Daniel, Isaiah, and then there's this whole section of what's there's this whole section of what's there's this whole section of what's called the minor prophets that uh I called the minor prophets that uh I called the minor prophets that uh I think a lot of people probably haven't think a lot of people probably haven't think a lot of people probably haven't spent a lot of time with. So, I'm spent a lot of time with. So, I'm spent a lot of time with. So, I'm grateful to have you be the first one to grateful to have you be the first one to grateful to have you be the first one to help us to navigate it into these help us to navigate it into these help us to navigate it into these waters.

  3. waters. waters. >> Well, thank you very much. I am looking >> Well, thank you very much. I am looking >> Well, thank you very much. I am looking forward to getting into it with you. Uh forward to getting into it with you. Uh forward to getting into it with you. Uh Hosea is a book I enjoy very much. It's Hosea is a book I enjoy very much. It's Hosea is a book I enjoy very much. It's also a fairly difficult book even in also a fairly difficult book even in also a fairly difficult book even in English when you read through it, you're English when you read through it, you're English when you read through it, you're sometimes kind of mystified by what's sometimes kind of mystified by what's sometimes kind of mystified by what's going on. And so, if I can shed any going on. And so, if I can shed any going on. And so, if I can shed any light on it for the people, I'm happy to light on it for the people, I'm happy to light on it for the people, I'm happy to do that. do that. do that. >> No, that's great. I'm I I'm I'm happy to >> No, that's great. I'm I I'm I'm happy to >> No, that's great. I'm I I'm I'm happy to have you here with us doing this. Okay. have you here with us doing this. Okay. have you here with us doing this. Okay. So, let's let's start where we start all So, let's let's start where we start all So, let's let's start where we start all of these conversations, which is let's of these conversations, which is let's of these conversations, which is let's get some of the basic details out of the get some of the basic details out of the get some of the basic details out of the way. So, I always ask it this way way. So, I always ask it this way way. So, I always ask it this way because I've learned that I have to. Do because I've learned that I have to. Do because I've learned that I have to. Do we know who wrote the book of Isaiah? we know who wrote the book of Isaiah? we know who wrote the book of Isaiah? And And And >> Hosea. >> Hosea. >> Hosea. >> Yeah. Well, that Okay. So, that's good. >> Yeah. Well, that Okay. So, that's good. >> Yeah. Well, that Okay. So, that's good. That's helpful. Hosea wrote the book. That's helpful. Hosea wrote the book. That's helpful. Hosea wrote the book. What do we know about Hosea? And then What do we know about Hosea? And then What do we know about Hosea? And then what do we know about maybe when this what do we know about maybe when this what do we know about maybe when this book was written? And why is that book was written? And why is that book was written? And why is that important for us to know? important for us to know? important for us to know? Okay. Well, when we start thinking about Okay. Well, when we start thinking about Okay. Well, when we start thinking about the authorship of Hosea and his the authorship of Hosea and his the authorship of Hosea and his situation, we need to begin by thinking situation, we need to begin by thinking situation, we need to begin by thinking uh by remembering the historical uh by remembering the historical uh by remembering the historical situation of Israel. So, I'm sure most situation of Israel. So, I'm sure most situation of Israel. So, I'm sure most your listeners know that the kingdom of your listeners know that the kingdom of your listeners know that the kingdom of Israel split apart Israel split apart Israel split apart >> at the death of Solomon. And so, >> at the death of Solomon. And so, >> at the death of Solomon. And so, Reaboam, Solomon's son, became king of Reaboam, Solomon's son, became king of Reaboam, Solomon's son, became king of just the small southern kingdom of just the small southern kingdom of just the small southern kingdom of Judah. And the bulk of Israel's what we Judah. And the bulk of Israel's what we Judah. And the bulk of Israel's what we call the northern kingdom, sometimes we call the northern kingdom, sometimes we call the northern kingdom, sometimes we call it Ephraim, sometimes we just call call it Ephraim, sometimes we just call call it Ephraim, sometimes we just call it Israel, it Israel, it Israel, >> uh became a separate independent kingdom >> uh became a separate independent kingdom >> uh became a separate independent kingdom under non-evidic kings. So you have

  4. under non-evidic kings. So you have under non-evidic kings. So you have these two separate kingdoms. these two separate kingdoms. these two separate kingdoms. And so Hosea is the author of the book And so Hosea is the author of the book And so Hosea is the author of the book of Hosea. Hosea son of Beer. of Hosea. Hosea son of Beer. of Hosea. Hosea son of Beer. We don't really know anything about the We don't really know anything about the We don't really know anything about the man beyond the name of his father than man beyond the name of his father than man beyond the name of his father than the brief little story of his marriage the brief little story of his marriage the brief little story of his marriage to Goomemer and then his three children. to Goomemer and then his three children. to Goomemer and then his three children. So about his circumstances personally we So about his circumstances personally we So about his circumstances personally we know nothing but there are a couple of know nothing but there are a couple of know nothing but there are a couple of important things. First important things. First important things. First he was a prophet to the northern kingdom he was a prophet to the northern kingdom he was a prophet to the northern kingdom >> not to the southern kingdom. >> not to the southern kingdom. >> not to the southern kingdom. Uh second he prophesied in the 8th Uh second he prophesied in the 8th Uh second he prophesied in the 8th century BC which is the century in which century BC which is the century in which century BC which is the century in which the northern kingdom was destroyed. the northern kingdom was destroyed. the northern kingdom was destroyed. So he actually lived to see the fall of So he actually lived to see the fall of So he actually lived to see the fall of the northern kingdom. We we can be quite the northern kingdom. We we can be quite the northern kingdom. We we can be quite sure of that. 7:22 BC, the uh northern sure of that. 7:22 BC, the uh northern sure of that. 7:22 BC, the uh northern kingdom finally collapses and its kingdom finally collapses and its kingdom finally collapses and its capital city Samaria is destroyed by the capital city Samaria is destroyed by the capital city Samaria is destroyed by the Assyrians.

  5. Assyrians. Assyrians. And so Hosea was a prophet at that time. And so Hosea was a prophet at that time. And so Hosea was a prophet at that time. He knew the destruction was coming. He He knew the destruction was coming. He He knew the destruction was coming. He warned the people and he lived to see it warned the people and he lived to see it warned the people and he lived to see it fulfilled. So he had a pretty traumatic fulfilled. So he had a pretty traumatic fulfilled. So he had a pretty traumatic life. life. life. >> Yeah, >> Yeah, >> Yeah, >> he lived at a difficult time. The other >> he lived at a difficult time. The other >> he lived at a difficult time. The other thing of importance for him in his times thing of importance for him in his times thing of importance for him in his times he along with Amos are the first two he along with Amos are the first two he along with Amos are the first two writing prophets. Now before them there writing prophets. Now before them there writing prophets. Now before them there were other prophets like Elijah and were other prophets like Elijah and were other prophets like Elijah and Elisha. Elisha. Elisha. >> Uh but probably Amos was the very first >> Uh but probably Amos was the very first >> Uh but probably Amos was the very first one to write a book but Hosea was a one to write a book but Hosea was a one to write a book but Hosea was a contemporary with him. Isaiah was a contemporary with him. Isaiah was a contemporary with him. Isaiah was a younger contemporary, but uh really younger contemporary, but uh really younger contemporary, but uh really Hosea and Amos are the first two writing Hosea and Amos are the first two writing Hosea and Amos are the first two writing prophets, prophets, prophets, >> and we can see their influence very >> and we can see their influence very >> and we can see their influence very heavily on the rest of the prophets. heavily on the rest of the prophets. heavily on the rest of the prophets. >> That's interesting. And again, I think >> That's interesting. And again, I think >> That's interesting. And again, I think it's helpful to keep that timeline in it's helpful to keep that timeline in it's helpful to keep that timeline in mind because as we've been going through mind because as we've been going through mind because as we've been going through these books of the prophets, uh, having these books of the prophets, uh, having these books of the prophets, uh, having come off the back of Ezra and Nehemiah, come off the back of Ezra and Nehemiah, come off the back of Ezra and Nehemiah, it's it's good to remember that we need it's it's good to remember that we need it's it's good to remember that we need to put ourselves back a little bit of to put ourselves back a little bit of to put ourselves back a little bit of ways. We're still going like pre-exile, ways. We're still going like pre-exile, ways. We're still going like pre-exile, the fall of in everything like that. So, the fall of in everything like that. So, the fall of in everything like that. So, I think that's helpful to for for our I think that's helpful to for for our I think that's helpful to for for our listeners to, you know, keep in mind listeners to, you know, keep in mind listeners to, you know, keep in mind where we're at in the biblical story, where we're at in the biblical story, where we're at in the biblical story, >> right? So you're backing up to during >> right? So you're backing up to during >> right? So you're backing up to during the time of both Israel and Judah still the time of both Israel and Judah still the time of both Israel and Judah still exist, but Israel falls within the exist, but Israel falls within the exist, but Israel falls within the lifetime of Hosea. Judah will continue

  6. lifetime of Hosea. Judah will continue lifetime of Hosea. Judah will continue for a while longer. for a while longer. for a while longer. >> Yeah, that's helpful. So, okay. So, >> Yeah, that's helpful. So, okay. So, >> Yeah, that's helpful. So, okay. So, so now let's look at the book of Hosea so now let's look at the book of Hosea so now let's look at the book of Hosea itself. How would you, And again, this itself. How would you, And again, this itself. How would you, And again, this might be an interesting one because as might be an interesting one because as might be an interesting one because as you said, there's some tricky stuff. you said, there's some tricky stuff. you said, there's some tricky stuff. It's not the easiest book to read. So, It's not the easiest book to read. So, It's not the easiest book to read. So, I'm very interested in your answer here. I'm very interested in your answer here. I'm very interested in your answer here. How would you describe the book of Hosea How would you describe the book of Hosea How would you describe the book of Hosea in one sentence? in one sentence? in one sentence? >> Well, the book of Hosea unfortunately is >> Well, the book of Hosea unfortunately is >> Well, the book of Hosea unfortunately is a rather negative book. a rather negative book. a rather negative book. >> So to describe it just in one sentence >> So to describe it just in one sentence >> So to describe it just in one sentence would be something like the book is a would be something like the book is a would be something like the book is a pronouncement of judgment on Israel. pronouncement of judgment on Israel. pronouncement of judgment on Israel. Although it contains promises of a Although it contains promises of a Although it contains promises of a future redemption, future redemption, future redemption, >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> there's no doubt the dominant theme of >> there's no doubt the dominant theme of >> there's no doubt the dominant theme of the book is Israel is sinful and Israel the book is Israel is sinful and Israel the book is Israel is sinful and Israel will be destroyed. will be destroyed. will be destroyed. >> Um that's not to say there aren't very >> Um that's not to say there aren't very >> Um that's not to say there aren't very positive things in the book that we'll positive things in the book that we'll positive things in the book that we'll talk about. talk about. talk about. >> But if you wanted to just summarize in >> But if you wanted to just summarize in >> But if you wanted to just summarize in one sentence the message of judgment, one sentence the message of judgment, one sentence the message of judgment, you should probably think of it in terms you should probably think of it in terms you should probably think of it in terms of, you know, this was an extremely of, you know, this was an extremely of, you know, this was an extremely decadent time. This was a time that decadent time. This was a time that decadent time. This was a time that Israel had gone deep into idolatry and Israel had gone deep into idolatry and Israel had gone deep into idolatry and moral degeneracy.

  7. moral degeneracy. moral degeneracy. And so it was as at the very end. So And so it was as at the very end. So And so it was as at the very end. So putting it in that context is very putting it in that context is very putting it in that context is very helpful. helpful. helpful. >> Yeah. And and you know and I I think >> Yeah. And and you know and I I think >> Yeah. And and you know and I I think again it's important to see and we'll again it's important to see and we'll again it's important to see and we'll get to that I think with with the themes get to that I think with with the themes get to that I think with with the themes and whatnot, but but this is a God who and whatnot, but but this is a God who and whatnot, but but this is a God who is jealous for his people. And so he is jealous for his people. And so he is jealous for his people. And so he knows he's like I've I've taught you. knows he's like I've I've taught you. knows he's like I've I've taught you. I've walked with you. And yet you still I've walked with you. And yet you still I've walked with you. And yet you still find yourselves falling weward in these find yourselves falling weward in these find yourselves falling weward in these ways and hence the prophet saying saying ways and hence the prophet saying saying ways and hence the prophet saying saying guys judgment is coming if we you know guys judgment is coming if we you know guys judgment is coming if we you know and so I think it it it's a good and so I think it it it's a good and so I think it it it's a good reminder for us to not forget because I reminder for us to not forget because I reminder for us to not forget because I think sometimes it's easy for us to say think sometimes it's easy for us to say think sometimes it's easy for us to say well there's lots of other sinful well there's lots of other sinful well there's lots of other sinful countries around I mean all these countries around I mean all these countries around I mean all these nations who aren't you know God nations who aren't you know God nations who aren't you know God followers all around us and we don't see followers all around us and we don't see followers all around us and we don't see uh you know the same God pronouncing uh you know the same God pronouncing uh you know the same God pronouncing them and and that's not true because them and and that's not true because them and and that's not true because sometimes there is but at the same time sometimes there is but at the same time sometimes there is but at the same time this is a God who is you he's he cares this is a God who is you he's he cares this is a God who is you he's he cares deeply about these people because they deeply about these people because they deeply about these people because they he called them his own he called them his own he called them his own >> and they still found wewardness.

  8. >> and they still found wewardness. >> and they still found wewardness. >> Yeah. Um you know just to step out from >> Yeah. Um you know just to step out from >> Yeah. Um you know just to step out from Hosea for just a moment and flip over to Hosea for just a moment and flip over to Hosea for just a moment and flip over to Amos is contemporary. Amos has a Amos is contemporary. Amos has a Amos is contemporary. Amos has a statement uh to Israel. You alone have I statement uh to Israel. You alone have I statement uh to Israel. You alone have I known among all the nations. Therefore, known among all the nations. Therefore, known among all the nations. Therefore, judgment will begin with you. judgment will begin with you. judgment will begin with you. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And so, it is the fact that they were >> And so, it is the fact that they were >> And so, it is the fact that they were God's people and the fact that they had God's people and the fact that they had God's people and the fact that they had this heritage of righteousness this heritage of righteousness this heritage of righteousness that made them more liable, made their that made them more liable, made their that made them more liable, made their guilt all the more heinous. And so, you guilt all the more heinous. And so, you guilt all the more heinous. And so, you know, we can compare that to our own know, we can compare that to our own know, we can compare that to our own time, the Christian heritage of the time, the Christian heritage of the time, the Christian heritage of the United States. And you know in terms of United States. And you know in terms of United States. And you know in terms of judgment that might come to us judgment that might come to us judgment that might come to us >> uh our heritage in a sense works against >> uh our heritage in a sense works against >> uh our heritage in a sense works against us because we have had plenty of us because we have had plenty of us because we have had plenty of opportunity to know what is right. opportunity to know what is right. opportunity to know what is right. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> It's almost like a you should have known >> It's almost like a you should have known >> It's almost like a you should have known better type of mentality like like I've better type of mentality like like I've better type of mentality like like I've been with you. You should have known been with you. You should have known been with you. You should have known better. Um so let's look at the at the better. Um so let's look at the at the better. Um so let's look at the at the flow of the book. What can a a new flow of the book. What can a a new flow of the book. What can a a new reader to Hosea expect when they open up reader to Hosea expect when they open up reader to Hosea expect when they open up the book and they kind of rifle through the book and they kind of rifle through the book and they kind of rifle through the pages, the chapters? What can they the pages, the chapters? What can they the pages, the chapters? What can they expect as the flow of the book? So, for expect as the flow of the book? So, for expect as the flow of the book? So, for the most part, the divisions in the book the most part, the divisions in the book the most part, the divisions in the book are fairly subtle. So, you have to be a are fairly subtle. So, you have to be a are fairly subtle. So, you have to be a very careful reader to begin to pick very careful reader to begin to pick very careful reader to begin to pick them out. So someone who just reads them out. So someone who just reads them out. So someone who just reads straight through the book, I mean that's straight through the book, I mean that's straight through the book, I mean that's great, but you you may find feel like it great, but you you may find feel like it great, but you you may find feel like it has no order at all and that's not

  9. has no order at all and that's not has no order at all and that's not correct. It does have order. Now the correct. It does have order. Now the correct. It does have order. Now the first thing that people will see and first thing that people will see and first thing that people will see and that everybody agrees on is there is a that everybody agrees on is there is a that everybody agrees on is there is a division between chapters 1 to three and division between chapters 1 to three and division between chapters 1 to three and then the rest of the book um 4 to 14 then the rest of the book um 4 to 14 then the rest of the book um 4 to 14 because chapter 1 and three tell the because chapter 1 and three tell the because chapter 1 and three tell the story of Hosea's marriage to Goomemer story of Hosea's marriage to Goomemer story of Hosea's marriage to Goomemer >> and you know he's commanded by God to >> and you know he's commanded by God to >> and you know he's commanded by God to marry a prostitute and then she has marry a prostitute and then she has marry a prostitute and then she has three children and he gives them these three children and he gives them these three children and he gives them these terrible dreadful names and then you terrible dreadful names and then you terrible dreadful names and then you kind of piece together that she goes kind of piece together that she goes kind of piece together that she goes astray and then he has to buy her out of astray and then he has to buy her out of astray and then he has to buy her out of slavery. Apparently she has fallen into slavery. Apparently she has fallen into slavery. Apparently she has fallen into slavery. slavery. slavery. And so that story is self-contained in And so that story is self-contained in And so that story is self-contained in chapters 1 to three. And then from 4 to chapters 1 to three. And then from 4 to chapters 1 to three. And then from 4 to 14 you have this extended series of 14 you have this extended series of 14 you have this extended series of u warnings and judgments against Israel. u warnings and judgments against Israel. u warnings and judgments against Israel. But there are a couple of things that But there are a couple of things that But there are a couple of things that even there structurally you know in even there structurally you know in even there structurally you know in terms of understanding the flow of the terms of understanding the flow of the terms of understanding the flow of the book are very important.

  10. book are very important. book are very important. >> So if I can very briefly walk with you. >> So if I can very briefly walk with you. >> So if I can very briefly walk with you. >> So chapter 4 verse 1 to chapter 6 verse >> So chapter 4 verse 1 to chapter 6 verse >> So chapter 4 verse 1 to chapter 6 verse three three three is basically a series of accusations. is basically a series of accusations. is basically a series of accusations. And these accusations, and this is And these accusations, and this is And these accusations, and this is something that is pretty subtle that you something that is pretty subtle that you something that is pretty subtle that you often don't really get when you um often don't really get when you um often don't really get when you um quickly just read through the book, quickly just read through the book, quickly just read through the book, these accusations are actually built these accusations are actually built these accusations are actually built upon the the three children. You know, upon the the three children. You know, upon the the three children. You know, the three children are given these the three children are given these the three children are given these really frightening kind of names. really frightening kind of names. really frightening kind of names. um loama um loama um loama not pied, lo ami not my people and not pied, lo ami not my people and not pied, lo ami not my people and Jezreel which speaks of bloodshed and Jezreel which speaks of bloodshed and Jezreel which speaks of bloodshed and slaughter. slaughter. slaughter. >> So not ideal name choices for today. If >> So not ideal name choices for today. If >> So not ideal name choices for today. If you're rifling through the Bible and you're rifling through the Bible and you're rifling through the Bible and you're looking for name ideas, let's you're looking for name ideas, let's you're looking for name ideas, let's stay away from those. stay away from those. stay away from those. >> Absolutely. But when you go through um >> Absolutely. But when you go through um >> Absolutely. But when you go through um you know the uh chapter four and five, you know the uh chapter four and five, you know the uh chapter four and five, what you see is not only do these names what you see is not only do these names what you see is not only do these names these these words appear not my people these these words appear not my people these these words appear not my people or something like that but the number or something like that but the number or something like that but the number three is constantly coming up.

  11. three is constantly coming up. three is constantly coming up. >> So for example chapter 4 verse one which >> So for example chapter 4 verse one which >> So for example chapter 4 verse one which we'll talk about in a few minutes uh has we'll talk about in a few minutes uh has we'll talk about in a few minutes uh has three basic accusu accusations against three basic accusu accusations against three basic accusu accusations against the people. Then the text goes on and it the people. Then the text goes on and it the people. Then the text goes on and it describes three targets of accusation. describes three targets of accusation. describes three targets of accusation. It gives an accusation against the It gives an accusation against the It gives an accusation against the religious leadership and against the religious leadership and against the religious leadership and against the common people and then against the women common people and then against the women common people and then against the women and it it uh does this kind of thing and it it uh does this kind of thing and it it uh does this kind of thing repeatedly repeatedly repeatedly uh where it will just over and over uh where it will just over and over uh where it will just over and over again again again pronounce its condemnation and its pronounce its condemnation and its pronounce its condemnation and its accusations accusations accusations along the line of the number three. So along the line of the number three. So along the line of the number three. So you have in chapter 41- 63 a series of you have in chapter 41- 63 a series of you have in chapter 41- 63 a series of accusations against Israel again and accusations against Israel again and accusations against Israel again and they all build upon the names of the they all build upon the names of the they all build upon the names of the three children or they are related to three children or they are related to three children or they are related to the names of the three children. Um but the names of the three children. Um but the names of the three children. Um but then in chapters 64 to 7:16 then in chapters 64 to 7:16 then in chapters 64 to 7:16 you know he's given all these you know he's given all these you know he's given all these accusations to them. He's given all the accusations to them. He's given all the accusations to them. He's given all the reasons that God has to judge them. And reasons that God has to judge them. And reasons that God has to judge them. And then finally in 64-76 then finally in 64-76 then finally in 64-76 you have the verdict.

  12. you have the verdict. you have the verdict. >> And this is quite remarkable because >> And this is quite remarkable because >> And this is quite remarkable because when we look at the verdict when we look at the verdict when we look at the verdict um the verdict is given first of all um the verdict is given first of all um the verdict is given first of all with great hesitation and sorrow and with great hesitation and sorrow and with great hesitation and sorrow and regret. It begins regret. It begins regret. It begins chapter 6 verse4. What am I going to do chapter 6 verse4. What am I going to do chapter 6 verse4. What am I going to do with you Ephraim? What am I going to do with you Ephraim? What am I going to do with you Ephraim? What am I going to do with you, Judah? Your love is like a with you, Judah? Your love is like a with you, Judah? Your love is like a morning mist and like the early dew, it morning mist and like the early dew, it morning mist and like the early dew, it vanishes. And so God is mourning over vanishes. And so God is mourning over vanishes. And so God is mourning over the fact that he has to judge them. And the fact that he has to judge them. And the fact that he has to judge them. And he's he's like he's at wit's end saying, he's he's like he's at wit's end saying, he's he's like he's at wit's end saying, "What can I do with you?" You know, like "What can I do with you?" You know, like "What can I do with you?" You know, like a person who is a person who is a person who is >> uh dealing with a weward child. Yeah. >> uh dealing with a weward child. Yeah. >> uh dealing with a weward child. Yeah. >> And does not know what to do and has >> And does not know what to do and has >> And does not know what to do and has tried everything. Uh and so it it does tried everything. Uh and so it it does tried everything. Uh and so it it does finally in these uh chapters finally in these uh chapters finally in these uh chapters come down in chapters uh 64- 716 with come down in chapters uh 64- 716 with come down in chapters uh 64- 716 with you know these you know these you know these verdicts that they are guilty and they verdicts that they are guilty and they verdicts that they are guilty and they will be destroyed will be destroyed will be destroyed >> but it does so with much regret and much >> but it does so with much regret and much >> but it does so with much regret and much sorrow. And then you have the same thing sorrow. And then you have the same thing sorrow. And then you have the same thing again. Uh chapter 8 verse 1 to chapter again. Uh chapter 8 verse 1 to chapter again. Uh chapter 8 verse 1 to chapter 10:15 is another series of accusations.

  13. 10:15 is another series of accusations. 10:15 is another series of accusations. Uh where God again um you know lists Uh where God again um you know lists Uh where God again um you know lists many sins they've committed, many things many sins they've committed, many things many sins they've committed, many things they've done wrong. Um, in this passage they've done wrong. Um, in this passage they've done wrong. Um, in this passage though there is reference to the mother though there is reference to the mother though there is reference to the mother because we have the metaphor of the because we have the metaphor of the because we have the metaphor of the three children and the metaphor of the three children and the metaphor of the three children and the metaphor of the mother. mother. mother. >> And so in chapter 9 verse one he speaks >> And so in chapter 9 verse one he speaks >> And so in chapter 9 verse one he speaks of Israel as um a prostitute because you of Israel as um a prostitute because you of Israel as um a prostitute because you know Goomer the wife of Hosea was know Goomer the wife of Hosea was know Goomer the wife of Hosea was basically a prostitute an immoral basically a prostitute an immoral basically a prostitute an immoral sexually immoral woman. And so you have sexually immoral woman. And so you have sexually immoral woman. And so you have reference back to Goomemer in in that reference back to Goomemer in in that reference back to Goomemer in in that section. And so again it's a series of section. And so again it's a series of section. And so again it's a series of accusations. accusations. accusations. Then finally after that from 111 to 3:16 Then finally after that from 111 to 3:16 Then finally after that from 111 to 3:16 11-16 11-16 11-16 there is another verdict but once again there is another verdict but once again there is another verdict but once again it is a verdict that comes with much it is a verdict that comes with much it is a verdict that comes with much regret and much sorrow. So it begins regret and much sorrow. So it begins regret and much sorrow. So it begins very famous passage 11:1 when Israel was very famous passage 11:1 when Israel was very famous passage 11:1 when Israel was a child I loved him and out of Egypt I a child I loved him and out of Egypt I a child I loved him and out of Egypt I called my son I called to the Egyptians called my son I called to the Egyptians called my son I called to the Egyptians even as Israel was leaving them but they even as Israel was leaving them but they even as Israel was leaving them but they kept sacrificing to bales and offering kept sacrificing to bales and offering kept sacrificing to bales and offering uh and burning offerings to idols. It uh and burning offerings to idols. It uh and burning offerings to idols. It was I who taught Ephraim to walk taking was I who taught Ephraim to walk taking was I who taught Ephraim to walk taking them by the hand them by the hand them by the hand but they never knew that I healed them.

  14. but they never knew that I healed them. but they never knew that I healed them. I led them with human cords, with ropes I led them with human cords, with ropes I led them with human cords, with ropes of love, etc. So in that passage again, of love, etc. So in that passage again, of love, etc. So in that passage again, God is like a totally distraught father. God is like a totally distraught father. God is like a totally distraught father. He he's like a father who has a very He he's like a father who has a very He he's like a father who has a very weward son and he remembers when that weward son and he remembers when that weward son and he remembers when that son was a little toddler and he was son was a little toddler and he was son was a little toddler and he was holding him by the arms and teaching him holding him by the arms and teaching him holding him by the arms and teaching him to walk, you know, bending over, to walk, you know, bending over, to walk, you know, bending over, stooping over stooping over stooping over >> um just just making little steps as the >> um just just making little steps as the >> um just just making little steps as the little boy is starting to learn to walk. little boy is starting to learn to walk. little boy is starting to learn to walk. So, it's a very tender memory. It's a So, it's a very tender memory. It's a So, it's a very tender memory. It's a memory just filled with love. memory just filled with love. memory just filled with love. But now his son has become completely But now his son has become completely But now his son has become completely wicked, completely reckless. And so the wicked, completely reckless. And so the wicked, completely reckless. And so the father is in effect tearing his hair out father is in effect tearing his hair out father is in effect tearing his hair out saying, "What am I going to do with saying, "What am I going to do with saying, "What am I going to do with you?" you?" you?" >> U and so again, it does pronounce >> U and so again, it does pronounce >> U and so again, it does pronounce judgment upon judgment upon judgment upon Israel that they will have to be Israel that they will have to be Israel that they will have to be destroyed. But it is again a judgment destroyed. But it is again a judgment destroyed. But it is again a judgment that is filled with regret and uh sorrow that is filled with regret and uh sorrow that is filled with regret and uh sorrow and neglect. Now there is interspersed and neglect. Now there is interspersed and neglect. Now there is interspersed in both passages throughout the book all in both passages throughout the book all in both passages throughout the book all the way through the book there are the way through the book there are the way through the book there are places where God promises that after the places where God promises that after the places where God promises that after the destruction of the northern kingdom destruction of the northern kingdom destruction of the northern kingdom after they've been scattered God will after they've been scattered God will after they've been scattered God will redeem them. God will bring them back redeem them. God will bring them back redeem them. God will bring them back and God will heal them.

  15. and God will heal them. and God will heal them. >> Um so it's not as if there's nothing in >> Um so it's not as if there's nothing in >> Um so it's not as if there's nothing in it but judgment and condemnation. Yeah, it but judgment and condemnation. Yeah, it but judgment and condemnation. Yeah, >> but we do really need to see as all >> but we do really need to see as all >> but we do really need to see as all these accusations are being given, these accusations are being given, these accusations are being given, they're not being given by a god who is they're not being given by a god who is they're not being given by a god who is like this aloof like this aloof like this aloof impersonal deity or like a judge who has impersonal deity or like a judge who has impersonal deity or like a judge who has no sense of humanity about the the no sense of humanity about the the no sense of humanity about the the criminal among in front of him and all criminal among in front of him and all criminal among in front of him and all he wants to do is pronounce judgment. he wants to do is pronounce judgment. he wants to do is pronounce judgment. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> You know, as if he's he just delights in >> You know, as if he's he just delights in >> You know, as if he's he just delights in punishing or something like that. Um it punishing or something like that. Um it punishing or something like that. Um it is in fact the exact opposite. It is God is in fact the exact opposite. It is God is in fact the exact opposite. It is God who sees how wicked his people are and who sees how wicked his people are and who sees how wicked his people are and is very deeply distressed and is is very deeply distressed and is is very deeply distressed and is pronouncing judgment with great regret pronouncing judgment with great regret pronouncing judgment with great regret and with great sorrow. So that got got and with great sorrow. So that got got and with great sorrow. So that got got us through chapter 13. Chapter 14 1 to8 us through chapter 13. Chapter 14 1 to8 us through chapter 13. Chapter 14 1 to8 is a final appeal for them to repent and is a final appeal for them to repent and is a final appeal for them to repent and another promise of restoration. So it it another promise of restoration. So it it another promise of restoration. So it it ends on a positive note in that sense ends on a positive note in that sense ends on a positive note in that sense saying you know you really need to saying you know you really need to saying you know you really need to repent and there's also an appeal and repent and there's also an appeal and repent and there's also an appeal and there there is also a promise of there there is also a promise of there there is also a promise of restoration.

  16. restoration. restoration. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> The very ending of the book is is >> The very ending of the book is is >> The very ending of the book is is fascinating. M fascinating. M fascinating. M >> the last verse of the book, Hosea 14:9 >> the last verse of the book, Hosea 14:9 >> the last verse of the book, Hosea 14:9 says, "Let whoever is wise understand says, "Let whoever is wise understand says, "Let whoever is wise understand these things, and whoever is insightful these things, and whoever is insightful these things, and whoever is insightful recognize them. For the ways of the Lord recognize them. For the ways of the Lord recognize them. For the ways of the Lord are right, and the righteous walk in are right, and the righteous walk in are right, and the righteous walk in them, but the rebellious stumble in them, but the rebellious stumble in them, but the rebellious stumble in them." So this is quite an amazing thing them." So this is quite an amazing thing them." So this is quite an amazing thing that that Hosea concludes his book with that that Hosea concludes his book with that that Hosea concludes his book with >> because you need to understand it's as I >> because you need to understand it's as I >> because you need to understand it's as I mentioned earlier it's difficult enough mentioned earlier it's difficult enough mentioned earlier it's difficult enough for the English reader just you read for the English reader just you read for the English reader just you read through it trying to piece together okay through it trying to piece together okay through it trying to piece together okay what is this book all about what's doing what is this book all about what's doing what is this book all about what's doing >> I can assure you the Hebrew of Hosea is >> I can assure you the Hebrew of Hosea is >> I can assure you the Hebrew of Hosea is very very difficult it most it could be very very difficult it most it could be very very difficult it most it could be arguably the most difficult Hebrew in arguably the most difficult Hebrew in arguably the most difficult Hebrew in the Hebrew Hebrew Bible the Hebrew Hebrew Bible the Hebrew Hebrew Bible >> second to Job. Um it's very difficult. >> second to Job. Um it's very difficult. >> second to Job. Um it's very difficult. It's very elliptical, you know, which It's very elliptical, you know, which It's very elliptical, you know, which means that it it just it will jump from means that it it just it will jump from means that it it just it will jump from one thing to another without filling in one thing to another without filling in one thing to another without filling in a lot of details.

  17. a lot of details. a lot of details. >> And so you have to kind of think, okay, >> And so you have to kind of think, okay, >> And so you have to kind of think, okay, where is he? What is he talking about? where is he? What is he talking about? where is he? What is he talking about? So the book is very difficult. But here So the book is very difficult. But here So the book is very difficult. But here at the very end of the book, it at the very end of the book, it at the very end of the book, it acknowledges that it's difficult. It acknowledges that it's difficult. It acknowledges that it's difficult. It says, who is able to understand these says, who is able to understand these says, who is able to understand these things? It's like saying okay I've given things? It's like saying okay I've given things? It's like saying okay I've given you a very enigmatic book so who is able you a very enigmatic book so who is able you a very enigmatic book so who is able to understand it but then it says the to understand it but then it says the to understand it but then it says the righteous will walk in them. In other righteous will walk in them. In other righteous will walk in them. In other words words words if you have if you have if you have a repentant heart. It's not that you'll a repentant heart. It's not that you'll a repentant heart. It's not that you'll necessarily have perfect understanding necessarily have perfect understanding necessarily have perfect understanding of the book. Nobody does. Yeah. of the book. Nobody does. Yeah. of the book. Nobody does. Yeah. >> But you'll get it. You will see what the >> But you'll get it. You will see what the >> But you'll get it. You will see what the book is about and the message will speak book is about and the message will speak book is about and the message will speak to you. If you don't, if your heart to you. If you don't, if your heart to you. If you don't, if your heart before God is wrong, you'll just look at before God is wrong, you'll just look at before God is wrong, you'll just look at this book and say, "Man, this is a weird this book and say, "Man, this is a weird this book and say, "Man, this is a weird book and I don't understand it." And let book and I don't understand it." And let book and I don't understand it." And let it go. So, it's quite remarkable in that it go. So, it's quite remarkable in that it go. So, it's quite remarkable in that regard. regard. regard. And And And please correct me if I'm if I'm wrong.

  18. please correct me if I'm if I'm wrong. please correct me if I'm if I'm wrong. In my under in in my understanding of of In my under in in my understanding of of In my under in in my understanding of of the book, it seems like this is a the book, it seems like this is a the book, it seems like this is a message that Hosea, as you said, is message that Hosea, as you said, is message that Hosea, as you said, is being a writing prophet. So he is being a writing prophet. So he is being a writing prophet. So he is delivering this message, this word to to delivering this message, this word to to delivering this message, this word to to Israel Israel Israel >> and and then that's what we see as you >> and and then that's what we see as you >> and and then that's what we see as you as you said his his life was was around as you said his his life was was around as you said his his life was was around that time when he would have seen the that time when he would have seen the that time when he would have seen the destruction of Israel is is right destruction of Israel is is right destruction of Israel is is right >> in in in other books of the prophets >> in in in other books of the prophets >> in in in other books of the prophets what we've seen then is kind of both and what we've seen then is kind of both and what we've seen then is kind of both and is is we've seen a message and then is is we've seen a message and then is is we've seen a message and then we've seen oh here's what happened you we've seen oh here's what happened you we've seen oh here's what happened you know and and then We see the aftermath know and and then We see the aftermath know and and then We see the aftermath too. We see the prophet too. We see the prophet too. We see the prophet >> reconciling with the aftermath. In in >> reconciling with the aftermath. In in >> reconciling with the aftermath. In in this book for Hosea, we don't get any this book for Hosea, we don't get any this book for Hosea, we don't get any more from him. This is his message that more from him. This is his message that more from him. This is his message that we hear. So, we don't get to see him we hear. So, we don't get to see him we hear. So, we don't get to see him talk or I should say hear him or read talk or I should say hear him or read talk or I should say hear him or read his writings about the aftermath of his writings about the aftermath of his writings about the aftermath of Israel's fall. Is that right?

  19. Israel's fall. Is that right? Israel's fall. Is that right? >> Yeah. You could contrast Hosea with >> Yeah. You could contrast Hosea with >> Yeah. You could contrast Hosea with Jeremiah. Jeremiah. Jeremiah. >> Yeah, that's what I was thinking of in >> Yeah, that's what I was thinking of in >> Yeah, that's what I was thinking of in my mind. Yeah. So Jeremiah has an my mind. Yeah. So Jeremiah has an my mind. Yeah. So Jeremiah has an enormous amount of biographical detail enormous amount of biographical detail enormous amount of biographical detail in the book. It's constantly referring in the book. It's constantly referring in the book. It's constantly referring to episodes in the life of Jeremiah and to episodes in the life of Jeremiah and to episodes in the life of Jeremiah and his relationship to the kings and his his relationship to the kings and his his relationship to the kings and his relationship to his scribe Baroo. relationship to his scribe Baroo. relationship to his scribe Baroo. >> And it it describes in detail the events >> And it it describes in detail the events >> And it it describes in detail the events around the fall of Jerusalem and what around the fall of Jerusalem and what around the fall of Jerusalem and what happened and then how Jeremiah himself happened and then how Jeremiah himself happened and then how Jeremiah himself um was taken out of uh the country and um was taken out of uh the country and um was taken out of uh the country and taken to Egypt. And so you have this taken to Egypt. And so you have this taken to Egypt. And so you have this very full historical record. In other very full historical record. In other very full historical record. In other words, the life of the prophet and the words, the life of the prophet and the words, the life of the prophet and the message of the prophet are deeply message of the prophet are deeply message of the prophet are deeply intertwined. intertwined. intertwined. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Whereas in Hosea, you you you have, as I >> Whereas in Hosea, you you you have, as I >> Whereas in Hosea, you you you have, as I said earlier, virtually nothing about said earlier, virtually nothing about said earlier, virtually nothing about the life of the prophet other than the the life of the prophet other than the the life of the prophet other than the marriage to Goomemer and the birth of marriage to Goomemer and the birth of marriage to Goomemer and the birth of the three children. the three children. the three children. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And even though he lived to see the fall >> And even though he lived to see the fall >> And even though he lived to see the fall of uh the northern kingdom, he did not of uh the northern kingdom, he did not of uh the northern kingdom, he did not describe it in his book. Yeah.

  20. describe it in his book. Yeah. describe it in his book. Yeah. >> So what you really have I think in Hosea >> So what you really have I think in Hosea >> So what you really have I think in Hosea is a kind of compilation of his messages is a kind of compilation of his messages is a kind of compilation of his messages that he gave that he gave that he gave >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> prior to the destruction of the kingdom. >> prior to the destruction of the kingdom. >> prior to the destruction of the kingdom. And there is I mean there's an there's And there is I mean there's an there's And there is I mean there's an there's something of value both to what you have something of value both to what you have something of value both to what you have in Jeremiah and what you have in Hosea in Jeremiah and what you have in Hosea in Jeremiah and what you have in Hosea >> for sure. Because in Jeremiah, you know, >> for sure. Because in Jeremiah, you know, >> for sure. Because in Jeremiah, you know, because you see the man so intimately, because you see the man so intimately, because you see the man so intimately, you get a real sense of the suffering you get a real sense of the suffering you get a real sense of the suffering and struggling of the prophet, you get a and struggling of the prophet, you get a and struggling of the prophet, you get a strong sense of this kind of redemptive strong sense of this kind of redemptive strong sense of this kind of redemptive suffering suffering suffering um that you see in the person of um that you see in the person of um that you see in the person of Jeremiah. Jeremiah. Jeremiah. Whereas in the book of Hosea, the Whereas in the book of Hosea, the Whereas in the book of Hosea, the advantage of what we have in Hosea is advantage of what we have in Hosea is advantage of what we have in Hosea is for the most part he recedes into the for the most part he recedes into the for the most part he recedes into the shadows and it's just the message. shadows and it's just the message. shadows and it's just the message. >> Yeah. So you just focus on what is he >> Yeah. So you just focus on what is he >> Yeah. So you just focus on what is he saying rather than what was his life. saying rather than what was his life. saying rather than what was his life. >> Yeah. No, I I I think that ties in well >> Yeah. No, I I I think that ties in well >> Yeah. No, I I I think that ties in well with the theme which is the next thing with the theme which is the next thing with the theme which is the next thing we typically talk about which is this is we typically talk about which is this is we typically talk about which is this is it it's as you said because we see less it it's as you said because we see less it it's as you said because we see less of Hosea himself. It feels more like of Hosea himself. It feels more like of Hosea himself. It feels more like this is God's mouthpiece that this is this is God's mouthpiece that this is this is God's mouthpiece that this is God who is talking about the accusations God who is talking about the accusations God who is talking about the accusations and the verdict and the pain and and the and the verdict and the pain and and the and the verdict and the pain and and the sorrow he feels in having to deliver sorrow he feels in having to deliver sorrow he feels in having to deliver this. Um so yeah, go ahead.

  21. this. Um so yeah, go ahead. this. Um so yeah, go ahead. >> Go ahead. I was just going to say yes, >> Go ahead. I was just going to say yes, >> Go ahead. I was just going to say yes, you do have much more thoroughly in you do have much more thoroughly in you do have much more thoroughly in Hosea Hosea Hosea uh especially beginning in chapter 4. uh especially beginning in chapter 4. uh especially beginning in chapter 4. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Um where it is really God speaking. And >> Um where it is really God speaking. And >> Um where it is really God speaking. And so, you know, we looked at that when we so, you know, we looked at that when we so, you know, we looked at that when we were looking at God's vexation over were looking at God's vexation over were looking at God's vexation over Israel like in chapter 11. Israel like in chapter 11. Israel like in chapter 11. >> You know, you really get the sense this >> You know, you really get the sense this >> You know, you really get the sense this is God speaking. And again, Hosea the is God speaking. And again, Hosea the is God speaking. And again, Hosea the person just kind of very much recedes person just kind of very much recedes person just kind of very much recedes into the shadows. into the shadows. into the shadows. >> What else can you tell us about the >> What else can you tell us about the >> What else can you tell us about the major themes then of this book? major themes then of this book? major themes then of this book? >> Um, well, you know, kind of what we've >> Um, well, you know, kind of what we've >> Um, well, you know, kind of what we've talked about already. I guess one we talked about already. I guess one we talked about already. I guess one we haven't mentioned so far haven't mentioned so far haven't mentioned so far in terms of the judgment on the nation. in terms of the judgment on the nation. in terms of the judgment on the nation. So I believe that the metaphor of the So I believe that the metaphor of the So I believe that the metaphor of the mother and the three children is is very mother and the three children is is very mother and the three children is is very per uh purposeful. per uh purposeful. per uh purposeful. >> Sure. >> Sure. >> Sure. >> You know most people they really just >> You know most people they really just >> You know most people they really just they focus heavily on Goomer and on on they focus heavily on Goomer and on on they focus heavily on Goomer and on on you know the wayward woman and the you know the wayward woman and the you know the wayward woman and the metaphor of Yahweh's wife Israel has metaphor of Yahweh's wife Israel has metaphor of Yahweh's wife Israel has been unfaithful and has worshiped idols.

  22. been unfaithful and has worshiped idols. been unfaithful and has worshiped idols. All that is true. However, because Hosea All that is true. However, because Hosea All that is true. However, because Hosea gives so much emphasis to the children gives so much emphasis to the children gives so much emphasis to the children and he in some ways distinguishes the and he in some ways distinguishes the and he in some ways distinguishes the mother from the children, he in chapter mother from the children, he in chapter mother from the children, he in chapter two, he'll appeal to the children to two, he'll appeal to the children to two, he'll appeal to the children to speak to the mother. For example, speak to the mother. For example, speak to the mother. For example, >> I believe what he's doing is the mother >> I believe what he's doing is the mother >> I believe what he's doing is the mother represents the culture, the institutions represents the culture, the institutions represents the culture, the institutions and the religious and political leaders. and the religious and political leaders. and the religious and political leaders. They are the ones who shape society. They are the ones who shape society. They are the ones who shape society. Whereas the children represent the Whereas the children represent the Whereas the children represent the people at large. So he will talk at people at large. So he will talk at people at large. So he will talk at length about the priests and about the length about the priests and about the length about the priests and about the aristocracy and the kings and talk about aristocracy and the kings and talk about aristocracy and the kings and talk about how they have led the nation astray and how they have led the nation astray and how they have led the nation astray and how the whole culture of the nation has how the whole culture of the nation has how the whole culture of the nation has become so perverse that people who grow become so perverse that people who grow become so perverse that people who grow up in that culture just the ordinary up in that culture just the ordinary up in that culture just the ordinary people they are so heavily influenced by people they are so heavily influenced by people they are so heavily influenced by it that that they don't even realize it that that they don't even realize it that that they don't even realize what's happening to them. So there is a what's happening to them. So there is a what's happening to them. So there is a I think an important distinction I think an important distinction I think an important distinction between again um the the leadership, the between again um the the leadership, the between again um the the leadership, the culture, the institutions, culture, the institutions, culture, the institutions, all the things that shape society and all the things that shape society and all the things that shape society and that's the mother.

  23. that's the mother. that's the mother. >> Then there's just people in general who >> Then there's just people in general who >> Then there's just people in general who who ultimately will suffer for for where who ultimately will suffer for for where who ultimately will suffer for for where their leaders have taken them and those their leaders have taken them and those their leaders have taken them and those are the children as I understand it. M are the children as I understand it. M are the children as I understand it. M that's helpful to be able to manage the that's helpful to be able to manage the that's helpful to be able to manage the metaphors a little bit better for the metaphors a little bit better for the metaphors a little bit better for the reader. What does Hosea teach us about reader. What does Hosea teach us about reader. What does Hosea teach us about God? God? God? >> Um well, we've already touched on this a >> Um well, we've already touched on this a >> Um well, we've already touched on this a little bit, but the first thing is and little bit, but the first thing is and little bit, but the first thing is and you almost it's hard to know what word you almost it's hard to know what word you almost it's hard to know what word to use because if you speak of the to use because if you speak of the to use because if you speak of the humanity of God, that's obviously humanity of God, that's obviously humanity of God, that's obviously misleading. God is not human. But the misleading. God is not human. But the misleading. God is not human. But the tendency is of course both in the tendency is of course both in the tendency is of course both in the ancient world and the modern world to ancient world and the modern world to ancient world and the modern world to speak to think of God speak to think of God speak to think of God as just this high being who's so high as just this high being who's so high as just this high being who's so high and so aloof that he's almost an and so aloof that he's almost an and so aloof that he's almost an abstraction abstraction abstraction you know and certainly doesn't have any you know and certainly doesn't have any you know and certainly doesn't have any feelings and um you know is untouched by feelings and um you know is untouched by feelings and um you know is untouched by everything that goes on in the world everything that goes on in the world everything that goes on in the world below.

  24. below. below. Whereas, you know, the personhood of God Whereas, you know, the personhood of God Whereas, you know, the personhood of God is so strong in Hosea that as we've is so strong in Hosea that as we've is so strong in Hosea that as we've illustrated from the passages we looked illustrated from the passages we looked illustrated from the passages we looked at that his is lamenting and his at that his is lamenting and his at that his is lamenting and his grieving over the sin of his people grieving over the sin of his people grieving over the sin of his people >> that um you know drawing upon this idea >> that um you know drawing upon this idea >> that um you know drawing upon this idea of a father who's just his heart is of a father who's just his heart is of a father who's just his heart is breaking over his wayward children. That breaking over his wayward children. That breaking over his wayward children. That is a very strong message about God is a very strong message about God is a very strong message about God in the the book of Hosea. and the fact in the the book of Hosea. and the fact in the the book of Hosea. and the fact that God does not enjoy punishing his that God does not enjoy punishing his that God does not enjoy punishing his people. But ultimately people. But ultimately people. But ultimately judgment will come. You know, if people judgment will come. You know, if people judgment will come. You know, if people don't repent, you know, no matter how don't repent, you know, no matter how don't repent, you know, no matter how much God grieavves over it, no matter much God grieavves over it, no matter much God grieavves over it, no matter how much he hates it, if people continue how much he hates it, if people continue how much he hates it, if people continue to behave in an evil manner, the to behave in an evil manner, the to behave in an evil manner, the judgment is inevitable. It will come. judgment is inevitable. It will come. judgment is inevitable. It will come. And so those are, I think, what we learn And so those are, I think, what we learn And so those are, I think, what we learn about God. um about God. um about God. um you know and and again I guess I guess you know and and again I guess I guess you know and and again I guess I guess it's best to think of it in terms of a it's best to think of it in terms of a it's best to think of it in terms of a contrast on the one hand it's contrast on the one hand it's contrast on the one hand it's contrasting with the idea of God as this contrasting with the idea of God as this contrasting with the idea of God as this aloof aloof deity a god of deism who aloof aloof deity a god of deism who aloof aloof deity a god of deism who really is unaffected about by really is unaffected about by really is unaffected about by everything.

  25. everything. everything. Um and on the other hand to think of God Um and on the other hand to think of God Um and on the other hand to think of God as a harsh judge who just delights to as a harsh judge who just delights to as a harsh judge who just delights to punish people. punish people. punish people. Um you know both of those concepts of Um you know both of those concepts of Um you know both of those concepts of God are certainly wrong. But then the God are certainly wrong. But then the God are certainly wrong. But then the other thing just the one other contrast other thing just the one other contrast other thing just the one other contrast to think of God as being so to think of God as being so to think of God as being so compassionate that he never really would compassionate that he never really would compassionate that he never really would punish his people and that certainly is punish his people and that certainly is punish his people and that certainly is contra contradicted by Hosea as well. contra contradicted by Hosea as well. contra contradicted by Hosea as well. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. For whatever reason, in in this For whatever reason, in in this For whatever reason, in in this conversation about Hi Hosea more than conversation about Hi Hosea more than conversation about Hi Hosea more than the other books of the prophets that the other books of the prophets that the other books of the prophets that we've already talked about, I'm I'm I'm we've already talked about, I'm I'm I'm we've already talked about, I'm I'm I'm spending a lot of time thinking about spending a lot of time thinking about spending a lot of time thinking about what we talked about a little bit what we talked about a little bit what we talked about a little bit earlier, which was this is God talking earlier, which was this is God talking earlier, which was this is God talking to, you know, to his people and and and to, you know, to his people and and and to, you know, to his people and and and calling them to repent, acknowledging calling them to repent, acknowledging calling them to repent, acknowledging they're not repenting. And so therefore, they're not repenting. And so therefore, they're not repenting. And so therefore, there has to be consequences to that. there has to be consequences to that. there has to be consequences to that. There's consequences to to that and and There's consequences to to that and and There's consequences to to that and and and you can see God's love and and you can see God's love and and you can see God's love and tenderness and in just his desire for tenderness and in just his desire for tenderness and in just his desire for his people to follow him to show him his people to follow him to show him his people to follow him to show him that love by saying, you know, by that love by saying, you know, by that love by saying, you know, by following the way that he had designed following the way that he had designed following the way that he had designed them to live and yet they're just not them to live and yet they're just not them to live and yet they're just not doing that. And in my mind this whole doing that. And in my mind this whole doing that. And in my mind this whole time, I've been contrasting this back to time, I've been contrasting this back to time, I've been contrasting this back to like what we see with Noah in the flood like what we see with Noah in the flood like what we see with Noah in the flood of God saying, I'm just gonna, you know, of God saying, I'm just gonna, you know, of God saying, I'm just gonna, you know, I just want to start I just want to wipe I just want to start I just want to wipe I just want to start I just want to wipe everything out. I want to start all

  26. everything out. I want to start all everything out. I want to start all over. Everything is sinful. Everything over. Everything is sinful. Everything over. Everything is sinful. Everything is wicked. And and he, you know, and and is wicked. And and he, you know, and and is wicked. And and he, you know, and and yet he saves this remnant with Noah. And yet he saves this remnant with Noah. And yet he saves this remnant with Noah. And instead in this one, instead of focusing instead in this one, instead of focusing instead in this one, instead of focusing on the rest of the world around them, on the rest of the world around them, on the rest of the world around them, you know, all these other nations with you know, all these other nations with you know, all these other nations with all their other gods doing all this all their other gods doing all this all their other gods doing all this other stuff, he's focusing on the other stuff, he's focusing on the other stuff, he's focusing on the opposite. He's focusing on his people opposite. He's focusing on his people opposite. He's focusing on his people and what he's he has seen happen in and what he's he has seen happen in and what he's he has seen happen in Israel. And and it's so it's interesting Israel. And and it's so it's interesting Israel. And and it's so it's interesting to compare contrast when God to compare contrast when God to compare contrast when God puts his focus on his people versus when puts his focus on his people versus when puts his focus on his people versus when he focuses on on other nations. he focuses on on other nations. he focuses on on other nations. >> Yeah, that's certainly true. And you >> Yeah, that's certainly true. And you >> Yeah, that's certainly true. And you know, it's um it's a reminder that we know, it's um it's a reminder that we know, it's um it's a reminder that we need to think of God in terms of the need to think of God in terms of the need to think of God in terms of the full biblical picture because we all full biblical picture because we all full biblical picture because we all have a tendency to pick out things we have a tendency to pick out things we have a tendency to pick out things we like like like uh about God himself and in theology uh about God himself and in theology uh about God himself and in theology generally and just say this is the whole generally and just say this is the whole generally and just say this is the whole story story story >> and neglect the things that we don't >> and neglect the things that we don't >> and neglect the things that we don't like. Yeah. But Hosea, we have pretty like. Yeah. But Hosea, we have pretty like. Yeah. But Hosea, we have pretty much the full picture.

  27. much the full picture. much the full picture. >> It is. It's a full picture. And that >> It is. It's a full picture. And that >> It is. It's a full picture. And that little part at the very end, that last little part at the very end, that last little part at the very end, that last verse that you mentioned about verse that you mentioned about verse that you mentioned about understanding and having wisdom and, you understanding and having wisdom and, you understanding and having wisdom and, you know, having a heart of repentance that know, having a heart of repentance that know, having a heart of repentance that will lead to understanding like that will lead to understanding like that will lead to understanding like that that that is a a a clear calling to the that that is a a a clear calling to the that that is a a a clear calling to the people of Israel and and a great people of Israel and and a great people of Israel and and a great reminder to us today, too, to be people reminder to us today, too, to be people reminder to us today, too, to be people who are so after God's heart that we who are so after God's heart that we who are so after God's heart that we will heed will heed will heed messages of warnings of saying, "Hey, I messages of warnings of saying, "Hey, I messages of warnings of saying, "Hey, I don't like what's going on. I I don't don't like what's going on. I I don't don't like what's going on. I I don't like the way that things are going. like the way that things are going. like the way that things are going. Listen to me and be after my heart. And Listen to me and be after my heart. And Listen to me and be after my heart. And that's such a that's an important that's such a that's an important that's such a that's an important reminder which kind of leads us into the reminder which kind of leads us into the reminder which kind of leads us into the next question that we always ask. We next question that we always ask. We next question that we always ask. We start with what this bookish is about start with what this bookish is about start with what this bookish is about God. But then we always ask what does God. But then we always ask what does God. But then we always ask what does this book teach us about people, about this book teach us about people, about this book teach us about people, about humanity, about ourselves. humanity, about ourselves. humanity, about ourselves. Um, well, I guess we've already kind of Um, well, I guess we've already kind of Um, well, I guess we've already kind of touched upon this a little bit, but you touched upon this a little bit, but you touched upon this a little bit, but you know, we have in the book of Hosea know, we have in the book of Hosea know, we have in the book of Hosea a good example from the ancient world of a good example from the ancient world of a good example from the ancient world of what today we would call influencers.

  28. what today we would call influencers. what today we would call influencers. You know, priests were influencers, the You know, priests were influencers, the You know, priests were influencers, the kings, you know, everybody looked up to kings, you know, everybody looked up to kings, you know, everybody looked up to the aristocracy because they thought, the aristocracy because they thought, the aristocracy because they thought, man, these people are great. You know, man, these people are great. You know, man, these people are great. You know, they've made it, they're powerful, they've made it, they're powerful, they've made it, they're powerful, >> and they're the one that had the big >> and they're the one that had the big >> and they're the one that had the big voice. Yeah. And so you really get a voice. Yeah. And so you really get a voice. Yeah. And so you really get a very strong sense in the book of Hosea very strong sense in the book of Hosea very strong sense in the book of Hosea of how thoroughly we are influenced of how thoroughly we are influenced of how thoroughly we are influenced by certain people. We're influenced by by certain people. We're influenced by by certain people. We're influenced by our culture. We're influenced by our our culture. We're influenced by our our culture. We're influenced by our situation. There's no escaping situation. There's no escaping situation. There's no escaping the world in which you live and the the world in which you live and the the world in which you live and the times in which we live. But the times in which we live. But the times in which we live. But the tendency, the danger is to be tendency, the danger is to be tendency, the danger is to be thoroughly shaped by that situation, by thoroughly shaped by that situation, by thoroughly shaped by that situation, by the culture, by people around us, by the culture, by people around us, by the culture, by people around us, by influencers, influencers, influencers, >> and that's what we see very much in >> and that's what we see very much in >> and that's what we see very much in Hosea. And so, uh, I think that's that's Hosea. And so, uh, I think that's that's Hosea. And so, uh, I think that's that's what it really warns us about ourselves. what it really warns us about ourselves. what it really warns us about ourselves. >> No, that's a great reminder. it the >> No, that's a great reminder. it the >> No, that's a great reminder. it the voices of the wisdom from below or the voices of the wisdom from below or the voices of the wisdom from below or the wisdom of the world can be quite loud wisdom of the world can be quite loud wisdom of the world can be quite loud and can be quite and can be quite and can be quite >> um influential. And so it's an important >> um influential. And so it's an important >> um influential. And so it's an important reminder for for us to be, you know, on reminder for for us to be, you know, on reminder for for us to be, you know, on guard in a way of what are you letting guard in a way of what are you letting guard in a way of what are you letting speak into your life?

  29. speak into your life? speak into your life? >> What are you letting be the defining >> What are you letting be the defining >> What are you letting be the defining wisdom of your life? And um so that's wisdom of your life? And um so that's wisdom of your life? And um so that's that's a great reminder. Um, are there a that's a great reminder. Um, are there a that's a great reminder. Um, are there a couple maybe maybe two or three like couple maybe maybe two or three like couple maybe maybe two or three like either it can be a verse, a passage, a either it can be a verse, a passage, a either it can be a verse, a passage, a chapter, anything from this book that chapter, anything from this book that chapter, anything from this book that you want to point out as worthy of you want to point out as worthy of you want to point out as worthy of specific specific specific uh consideration for the reader like uh consideration for the reader like uh consideration for the reader like beyond, you know, I flag these parts as beyond, you know, I flag these parts as beyond, you know, I flag these parts as you read the book. you read the book. you read the book. >> Yeah, there are a few verses that I >> Yeah, there are a few verses that I >> Yeah, there are a few verses that I would point to that I think are very would point to that I think are very would point to that I think are very very powerful. So one would be Hosea very powerful. So one would be Hosea very powerful. So one would be Hosea 4:1. So remember chapters 1 to 3. That's 4:1. So remember chapters 1 to 3. That's 4:1. So remember chapters 1 to 3. That's where we have the story of Goomemer and where we have the story of Goomemer and where we have the story of Goomemer and the children so forth. But the actual the children so forth. But the actual the children so forth. But the actual more or less more or less more or less uh Hosea's messages and sermons really uh Hosea's messages and sermons really uh Hosea's messages and sermons really begin in earnest in chapter 4 verse one. begin in earnest in chapter 4 verse one. begin in earnest in chapter 4 verse one. And so the first verse says, "Hear the And so the first verse says, "Hear the And so the first verse says, "Hear the word of the Lord, people of Israel, for word of the Lord, people of Israel, for word of the Lord, people of Israel, for the Lord has a case against the the Lord has a case against the the Lord has a case against the inhabitants of the land. There is no inhabitants of the land. There is no inhabitants of the land. There is no truth, no faithful love and no knowledge truth, no faithful love and no knowledge truth, no faithful love and no knowledge of God in the land. Now the thing that of God in the land. Now the thing that of God in the land. Now the thing that really strikes me about this and my own really strikes me about this and my own really strikes me about this and my own translation would be a little bit translation would be a little bit translation would be a little bit different but the second half of the different but the second half of the different but the second half of the verse I would translate that there is no verse I would translate that there is no verse I would translate that there is no integrity, there is no love, there is no integrity, there is no love, there is no integrity, there is no love, there is no knowledge of God.

  30. knowledge of God. knowledge of God. >> And I think that at the very essence is >> And I think that at the very essence is >> And I think that at the very essence is what God requires of us. He got he what God requires of us. He got he what God requires of us. He got he requires moral integrity requires moral integrity requires moral integrity you know um that essentially that we be you know um that essentially that we be you know um that essentially that we be good people. He requires love which of good people. He requires love which of good people. He requires love which of course love for God and love for people course love for God and love for people course love for God and love for people and knowledge of God. That is we know and knowledge of God. That is we know and knowledge of God. That is we know him, we have experienced him. We follow him, we have experienced him. We follow him, we have experienced him. We follow him. We fear him. Um and you know we him. We fear him. Um and you know we him. We fear him. Um and you know we live our lives before God as people who live our lives before God as people who live our lives before God as people who know him. So what I get from chapter 4 know him. So what I get from chapter 4 know him. So what I get from chapter 4 verse 1 is that these are just verse 1 is that these are just verse 1 is that these are just absolutely the three essentials what I absolutely the three essentials what I absolutely the three essentials what I would call of the Christian life would call of the Christian life would call of the Christian life integrity, love and knowledge of God. integrity, love and knowledge of God. integrity, love and knowledge of God. Um let's see a couple of other verses Um let's see a couple of other verses Um let's see a couple of other verses that to me are very important. Um this is a big issue so I won't go into this is a big issue so I won't go into it at this time other than to say it's it at this time other than to say it's it at this time other than to say it's very important. Okay, very important. Okay, very important. Okay, >> everybody knows about it, but Hosea >> everybody knows about it, but Hosea >> everybody knows about it, but Hosea 11:1, when Israel was a child, I loved 11:1, when Israel was a child, I loved 11:1, when Israel was a child, I loved him and out of Egypt I called my son.

  31. him and out of Egypt I called my son. him and out of Egypt I called my son. And of course, this is cited in Matthew And of course, this is cited in Matthew And of course, this is cited in Matthew chapter 2 in reference to Jesus and the chapter 2 in reference to Jesus and the chapter 2 in reference to Jesus and the Holy Family coming out of Egypt. Holy Family coming out of Egypt. Holy Family coming out of Egypt. It is a very important issue. You know, It is a very important issue. You know, It is a very important issue. You know, why does Matthew cite this verse as why does Matthew cite this verse as why does Matthew cite this verse as being fulfilled in Jesus? being fulfilled in Jesus? being fulfilled in Jesus? And And And this is really more into the weeds we this is really more into the weeds we this is really more into the weeds we want to go, but it's just this want to go, but it's just this want to go, but it's just this >> in my view when you read Hosea and how >> in my view when you read Hosea and how >> in my view when you read Hosea and how he uses he uses he uses earlier passages of the Old Testament. earlier passages of the Old Testament. earlier passages of the Old Testament. Like I mentioned that you see a lot of Like I mentioned that you see a lot of Like I mentioned that you see a lot of references to Genesis and to Exodus, references to Genesis and to Exodus, references to Genesis and to Exodus, >> some from Deuteronomy, some from Judges. >> some from Deuteronomy, some from Judges. >> some from Deuteronomy, some from Judges. >> In uh in the book of Hosea, you get a >> In uh in the book of Hosea, you get a >> In uh in the book of Hosea, you get a sense of how Hosea uses prior biblical sense of how Hosea uses prior biblical sense of how Hosea uses prior biblical passages, you know, Hosea's passages, you know, Hosea's passages, you know, Hosea's hermeneutics, Hosea's method of hermeneutics, Hosea's method of hermeneutics, Hosea's method of interpretation. interpretation. interpretation. >> Yeah. And in my view, when you look at >> Yeah. And in my view, when you look at >> Yeah. And in my view, when you look at how Matthew uses Hosea, Matthew is is how Matthew uses Hosea, Matthew is is how Matthew uses Hosea, Matthew is is using the exact same method. His way of using the exact same method. His way of using the exact same method. His way of using Hosea is fully the same as how using Hosea is fully the same as how using Hosea is fully the same as how Hosea himself uses earlier passages.

  32. Hosea himself uses earlier passages. Hosea himself uses earlier passages. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> So again, I don't want to go too deep >> So again, I don't want to go too deep >> So again, I don't want to go too deep into the weeds on that, but it's a very into the weeds on that, but it's a very into the weeds on that, but it's a very important passage. And um important passage. And um important passage. And um you know if anyone's really interested you know if anyone's really interested you know if anyone's really interested in this, they can look in my book called in this, they can look in my book called in this, they can look in my book called The Problem of the Old Testament. I have The Problem of the Old Testament. I have The Problem of the Old Testament. I have a chapter on Hosea. a chapter on Hosea. a chapter on Hosea. >> Great. I'll put it in the show notes. >> Great. I'll put it in the show notes. >> Great. I'll put it in the show notes. >> I they go into that. I go into that and >> I they go into that. I go into that and >> I they go into that. I go into that and um how Hosea makes use of Old Testament um how Hosea makes use of Old Testament um how Hosea makes use of Old Testament prophecy or Old Testament passages and prophecy or Old Testament passages and prophecy or Old Testament passages and then how then how then how >> Matthew uses Hosea. But anyway, >> Matthew uses Hosea. But anyway, >> Matthew uses Hosea. But anyway, >> yeah, >> yeah, >> yeah, >> let me move on beyond that one more >> let me move on beyond that one more >> let me move on beyond that one more >> um that that reinforces >> um that that reinforces >> um that that reinforces a couple of things we've said. So Hosea a couple of things we've said. So Hosea a couple of things we've said. So Hosea 11:8, 11:8, 11:8, how can I give you up Ephraim? How can I how can I give you up Ephraim? How can I how can I give you up Ephraim? How can I surrender you Israel? How can I make you surrender you Israel? How can I make you surrender you Israel? How can I make you like Adma? How can I treat you like like Adma? How can I treat you like like Adma? How can I treat you like Zaboim? Zaboim? Zaboim? He then goes on and says he will He then goes on and says he will He then goes on and says he will ultimately redeem them. But let's just ultimately redeem them. But let's just ultimately redeem them. But let's just stop right stop right there.

  33. stop right stop right there. stop right stop right there. Two things this verse really Two things this verse really Two things this verse really illustrates. First of all, it is this illustrates. First of all, it is this illustrates. First of all, it is this this painful compassion of God that this painful compassion of God that this painful compassion of God that again going back to this idea of you again going back to this idea of you again going back to this idea of you know a father brokenhearted over his know a father brokenhearted over his know a father brokenhearted over his son. He says how can I give you up? So son. He says how can I give you up? So son. He says how can I give you up? So that's one thing you see very clearly in that's one thing you see very clearly in that's one thing you see very clearly in this passage the compassion of God. The this passage the compassion of God. The this passage the compassion of God. The other thing you see though in this other thing you see though in this other thing you see though in this passage is the kind of enigmatic passage is the kind of enigmatic passage is the kind of enigmatic deliberately enigmatic quality of Hosea deliberately enigmatic quality of Hosea deliberately enigmatic quality of Hosea because he says, "How can I make you because he says, "How can I make you because he says, "How can I make you like Adma? How can I treat you like like Adma? How can I treat you like like Adma? How can I treat you like Zoim?" Zoim?" Zoim?" Well, what were they? Well, of course, Well, what were they? Well, of course, Well, what were they? Well, of course, you know, there were actually uh four you know, there were actually uh four you know, there were actually uh four cities of the plain that were destroyed. cities of the plain that were destroyed. cities of the plain that were destroyed. We're very familiar with two of them, We're very familiar with two of them, We're very familiar with two of them, Sodom and Gomorrah. Sodom and Gomorrah. Sodom and Gomorrah. >> Yeah. But Adnma and Zaboim were the >> Yeah. But Adnma and Zaboim were the >> Yeah. But Adnma and Zaboim were the other two. other two. other two. >> Everywhere else in the Old Testament >> Everywhere else in the Old Testament >> Everywhere else in the Old Testament when they refer to, you know, that when they refer to, you know, that when they refer to, you know, that incident, they always refer to Sodom and incident, they always refer to Sodom and incident, they always refer to Sodom and Gomorrah.

  34. Gomorrah. Gomorrah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Here, Hosea >> Here, Hosea >> Here, Hosea alone refers to it by this lesser known, alone refers to it by this lesser known, alone refers to it by this lesser known, more obscure towns. more obscure towns. more obscure towns. >> And that's just that's the way Hosea is. >> And that's just that's the way Hosea is. >> And that's just that's the way Hosea is. Hosea is a very Hosea is a very Hosea is a very um I I I would call it an enigmatic um I I I would call it an enigmatic um I I I would call it an enigmatic book, but it's a book that requires book, but it's a book that requires book, but it's a book that requires careful reading. careful reading. careful reading. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> You know, the average reader would would >> You know, the average reader would would >> You know, the average reader would would look at Admund and Zoe and say, "Wow, I look at Admund and Zoe and say, "Wow, I look at Admund and Zoe and say, "Wow, I don't know where they are." don't know where they are." don't know where they are." >> But um you know, if you think about it, >> But um you know, if you think about it, >> But um you know, if you think about it, if you do a little research, you if you do a little research, you if you do a little research, you realize, oh, they were destroyed with realize, oh, they were destroyed with realize, oh, they were destroyed with Sodom and Gomorrah. Sodom and Gomorrah. Sodom and Gomorrah. >> And so that's kind of just that's how >> And so that's kind of just that's how >> And so that's kind of just that's how Hosea talks. Hosea talks. Hosea talks. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And so that's an important thing. So, >> And so that's an important thing. So, >> And so that's an important thing. So, those are a few verses that I think are those are a few verses that I think are those are a few verses that I think are really valuable in Hosea. really valuable in Hosea. really valuable in Hosea. >> Well, I I I think it's helpful, and >> Well, I I I think it's helpful, and >> Well, I I I think it's helpful, and again, it's not like it's an incredibly again, it's not like it's an incredibly again, it's not like it's an incredibly long book, so it might be one that is long book, so it might be one that is long book, so it might be one that is even worth reading alongside with like a even worth reading alongside with like a even worth reading alongside with like a study Bible or reading a commentary study Bible or reading a commentary study Bible or reading a commentary afterwards. Um because there are there afterwards. Um because there are there afterwards. Um because there are there are all those little nuggets um of older are all those little nuggets um of older are all those little nuggets um of older testament um references that would be testament um references that would be testament um references that would be helpful to be able to see the call outs helpful to be able to see the call outs helpful to be able to see the call outs of too, of too, of too, >> right?

  35. >> right? >> right? >> Um Dr. Garrett, you have spent so much >> Um Dr. Garrett, you have spent so much >> Um Dr. Garrett, you have spent so much time studying time studying time studying of the book of Hosea. You've spent uh of the book of Hosea. You've spent uh of the book of Hosea. You've spent uh you know a lot of time writing and you know a lot of time writing and you know a lot of time writing and teaching about this book. And I want to teaching about this book. And I want to teaching about this book. And I want to thank you for helping us to navigate it thank you for helping us to navigate it thank you for helping us to navigate it today. I I always want to end by kind of today. I I always want to end by kind of today. I I always want to end by kind of asking one last question, which is what asking one last question, which is what asking one last question, which is what is something that you think everybody is something that you think everybody is something that you think everybody should know about Hosea, but probably should know about Hosea, but probably should know about Hosea, but probably doesn't. doesn't. doesn't. >> Um, I think we've already talked about >> Um, I think we've already talked about >> Um, I think we've already talked about several things. I think the only other several things. I think the only other several things. I think the only other thing I would add is this. And it's not thing I would add is this. And it's not thing I would add is this. And it's not so much something people don't know so much something people don't know so much something people don't know about, but I think it's the way people, about, but I think it's the way people, about, but I think it's the way people, including even preachers, kind of get including even preachers, kind of get including even preachers, kind of get misled by Hosea. They want something misled by Hosea. They want something misled by Hosea. They want something they can latch on to. They want a single they can latch on to. They want a single they can latch on to. They want a single idea that, you know, this kind of idea that, you know, this kind of idea that, you know, this kind of summarizes the whole book and makes it summarizes the whole book and makes it summarizes the whole book and makes it easy to uh digest and understand, you easy to uh digest and understand, you easy to uh digest and understand, you know, kind of a bite-sized idea. And so know, kind of a bite-sized idea. And so know, kind of a bite-sized idea. And so people tend to focus heavily on the people tend to focus heavily on the people tend to focus heavily on the marriage to Goomemer.

  36. marriage to Goomemer. marriage to Goomemer. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And so they will speak at great length >> And so they will speak at great length >> And so they will speak at great length about you know about you know about you know Hosea was commanded by God to marry this Hosea was commanded by God to marry this Hosea was commanded by God to marry this woman and the heartbreak he would have woman and the heartbreak he would have woman and the heartbreak he would have suffered because of her immorality. suffered because of her immorality. suffered because of her immorality. And um you know that becomes like the And um you know that becomes like the And um you know that becomes like the prism by which they read the entire prism by which they read the entire prism by which they read the entire book. Now, it's important, but as we've book. Now, it's important, but as we've book. And children than there is on Goomemer. And children than there is on Goomemer. And um and then when you get to chapter 4 um and then when you get to chapter 4 um and then when you get to chapter 4 and following, you know, you have all and following, you know, you have all and following, you know, you have all this other material we've talked about. this other material we've talked about. this other material we've talked about. And so I guess my exhortation would be And so I guess my exhortation would be And so I guess my exhortation would be don't just read everything through the don't just read everything through the don't just read everything through the prism of Hosea's marriage to Goomer prism of Hosea's marriage to Goomer prism of Hosea's marriage to Goomer because there's a lot more to the book because there's a lot more to the book because there's a lot more to the book than that. And as I've tried to to to than that. And as I've tried to to to than that. And as I've tried to to to mention, mention, mention, >> yeah, >> yeah, >> yeah, >> even the three children become much more >> even the three children become much more >> even the three children become much more dominant themes in the book than than dominant themes in the book than than dominant themes in the book than than Goomemer's uh immorality.
