again be favorable? again be favorable? Has his steadfast love forever ceased? Has his steadfast love forever ceased? Has his steadfast love forever ceased? Has promises at an end for all time? Has promises at an end for all time? Has promises at an end for all time? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he in anger shut up his compassion? These questions just show how These questions just show how disorienting his situation was. disorienting his situation was. disorienting his situation was. Things are so bad that he's having Things are so bad that he's having Things are so bad that he's having doubts about God's goodness. And I know doubts about God's goodness. And I know doubts about God's goodness. And I know many of us, myself included, have had many of us, myself included, have had many of us, myself included, have had times when we've struggled with doubt. times when we've struggled with doubt. times when we've struggled with doubt. Like the the bottom falls out and even Like the the bottom falls out and even Like the the bottom falls out and even though we feel guilty about it, we just though we feel guilty about it, we just though we feel guilty about it, we just begin to wonder things just like Asaph begin to wonder things just like Asaph begin to wonder things just like Asaph did. did. did. And this is where I'm so thankful for And this is where I'm so thankful for the pattern that we see in Lament. the pattern that we see in Lament. the pattern that we see in Lament. Cuz friends, remember, this is not just Cuz friends, remember, this is not just Cuz friends, remember, this is not just a journal from someone in a dark place. a journal from someone in a dark place. a journal from someone in a dark place. These are words that are inspired by the These are words that are inspired by the These are words that are inspired by the Holy Spirit of God. That's why they're Holy Spirit of God. That's why they're Holy Spirit of God. That's why they're in the Bible. in the Bible. in the Bible. And if God has inspired these words for And if God has inspired these words for And if God has inspired these words for us, us, us, then we can make at least two then we can make at least two then we can make at least two observations about Lament today. You observations about Lament today. You observations about Lament today. You might write these down if you're taking might write these down if you're taking might write these down if you're taking notes. First, notes. First, notes. First, Lament gives us freedom to be honest. Gives us freedom to be honest. Asaph Gives us freedom to be honest. Asaph hasn't held anything back in these hasn't held anything back in these hasn't held anything back in these verses. In fact, one commentator I read verses. In fact, one commentator I read verses. In fact, one commentator I read said this. He said, "If there's one said this. He said, "If there's one said this. He said, "If there's one thing about Asaph, he tells it like it thing about Asaph, he tells it like it thing about Asaph, he tells it like it is." is." is." It's been extremely raw and honest. It's been extremely raw and honest. It's been extremely raw and honest. Church family, look me in the eye right Church family, look me in the eye right Church family, look me in the eye right now. I want you to hear this clearly now. I want you to hear this clearly now. I want you to hear this clearly from me today. from me today. from me today. God always invites you to come to him God always invites you to come to him God always invites you to come to him exactly the way you are. exactly the way you are. exactly the way you are. >> Amen. >> Amen. >> Amen. >> Always. >> Always. >> Always. >> Amen. >> Amen. >> Amen. >> Always invites you to come to him >> Always invites you to come to him >> Always invites you to come to him exactly the way you are.

exactly the way you are. exactly the way you are. Doesn't expect you to hide your pain. Doesn't expect you to hide your pain. Doesn't expect you to hide your pain. Doesn't demand that you clean yourself Doesn't demand that you clean yourself Doesn't demand that you clean yourself up or find the right words before you up or find the right words before you up or find the right words before you come to him. come to him. come to him. He invites you to come to him just as He invites you to come to him just as He invites you to come to him just as you are and freely share that struggle you are and freely share that struggle you are and freely share that struggle with him. Even if all you can struggle to say to Even if all you can struggle to say to him him him is a moan or a why. Even though he already knows the full Even though he already knows the full extent of your pain and sorrow, as a extent of your pain and sorrow, as a extent of your pain and sorrow, as a loving father, he wants you to come to loving father, he wants you to come to loving father, he wants you to come to him with honesty. him with honesty. him with honesty. And here's a second observation. And here's a second observation. And here's a second observation. Lament leaves room for our doubts. Leaves room for our doubts. Leaves room for our doubts. Mark Vroegop in his book Dark Clouds, Mark Vroegop in his book Dark Clouds, Mark Vroegop in his book Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy, which I highly recommend, Deep Mercy, which I highly recommend, Deep Mercy, which I highly recommend, says it this way, "Lament is how you says it this way, "Lament is how you says it this way, "Lament is how you live between the poles of a hard life live between the poles of a hard life live between the poles of a hard life and trusting in God's sovereignty." and trusting in God's sovereignty." and trusting in God's sovereignty." Cuz we can know that God is in control, Cuz we can know that God is in control, Cuz we can know that God is in control, but it can feel like everything else is but it can feel like everything else is but it can feel like everything else is out of control.
-
out of control. out of control. We can know that God is all-powerful, We can know that God is all-powerful, We can know that God is all-powerful, but it can really feel like he is but it can really feel like he is but it can really feel like he is withholding his power. withholding his power. withholding his power. We can know that he's all-knowing, We can know that he's all-knowing, We can know that he's all-knowing, but it seems like he's turned a blind but it seems like he's turned a blind but it seems like he's turned a blind eye to our circumstances. eye to our circumstances. eye to our circumstances. And because we don't have the mind and And because we don't have the mind and And because we don't have the mind and perspective of God, that naturally leads perspective of God, that naturally leads perspective of God, that naturally leads us to doubt. And this was clear in us to doubt. And this was clear in us to doubt. And this was clear in Asaph's struggle. Look at it verse 8, Asaph's struggle. Look at it verse 8, Asaph's struggle. Look at it verse 8, when he asks, "Has his steadfast love when he asks, "Has his steadfast love when he asks, "Has his steadfast love forever ceased?" The Hebrew word for forever ceased?" The Hebrew word for forever ceased?" The Hebrew word for steadfast love there is hesed. It's a steadfast love there is hesed. It's a steadfast love there is hesed. It's a word we've talked about many times. It word we've talked about many times. It word we've talked about many times. It speaks to so many aspects of God's speaks to so many aspects of God's speaks to so many aspects of God's character, including his loyal, character, including his loyal, character, including his loyal, never-ending love. And Asaph is never-ending love. And Asaph is never-ending love. And Asaph is essentially asking here, has the essentially asking here, has the essentially asking here, has the unceasing love of God actually ceased? unceasing love of God actually ceased? unceasing love of God actually ceased? He's struggling with doubt. He's struggling with doubt. He's struggling with doubt. And friends, I want to tell you this And friends, I want to tell you this And friends, I want to tell you this morning that wrestling with doubt is not morning that wrestling with doubt is not morning that wrestling with doubt is not a bad thing. It's part of what it means a bad thing. It's part of what it means a bad thing. It's part of what it means to have faith. to have faith. to have faith. But what what makes doubting harmful But what what makes doubting harmful But what what makes doubting harmful is when we allow it to pull us away from is when we allow it to pull us away from is when we allow it to pull us away from God rather than drawing us to him.
-
And all throughout the Bible and here in And all throughout the Bible and here in the Psalm, God is clearly saying to us, the Psalm, God is clearly saying to us, the Psalm, God is clearly saying to us, bring your doubts and your questions to bring your doubts and your questions to bring your doubts and your questions to me.
