So, can you set the scene for us a little bit for what we have in for us a little bit for what we have in for us a little bit for what we have in in Numbers 20? And um yeah, a little bit in Numbers 20? And um yeah, a little bit in Numbers 20? And um yeah, a little bit of the context for us, where we are. of the context for us, where we are. of the context for us, where we are. >> Yeah, absolutely. So, I know that um as >> Yeah, absolutely. So, I know that um as >> Yeah, absolutely. So, I know that um as we teach this text, it's really we teach this text, it's really we teach this text, it's really interesting cuz you you know, we're you interesting cuz you you know, we're you interesting cuz you you know, we're you just said we're in week five and how just said we're in week five and how just said we're in week five and how much we've already seen. What's amazing much we've already seen. What's amazing much we've already seen. What's amazing is 2 weeks ago, Eric taught Numbers 13.

  2. is 2 weeks ago, Eric taught Numbers 13. is 2 weeks ago, Eric taught Numbers 13. In the timeline of Numbers, that's 38 In the timeline of Numbers, that's 38 In the timeline of Numbers, that's 38 years that has passed. So, in just four years that has passed. So, in just four years that has passed. So, in just four chapters, we get 38 years. In fact, chapters, we get 38 years. In fact, chapters, we get 38 years. In fact, Numbers 20, the text for today, is a big Numbers 20, the text for today, is a big Numbers 20, the text for today, is a big jump in the timeline. So, so all of a jump in the timeline. So, so all of a jump in the timeline. So, so all of a sudden a lot has transpired. And I took sudden a lot has transpired. And I took sudden a lot has transpired. And I took some time in the message here at Irvine some time in the message here at Irvine some time in the message here at Irvine and uh for our online congregation as and uh for our online congregation as and uh for our online congregation as well, to talk about how this story is well, to talk about how this story is well, to talk about how this story is now the third in a sequence of three now the third in a sequence of three now the third in a sequence of three rebellions. The first one was Numbers rebellions. The first one was Numbers rebellions. The first one was Numbers chapter 13, where the scouts are chapter 13, where the scouts are chapter 13, where the scouts are encamped around the tabernacle. God says encamped around the tabernacle. God says encamped around the tabernacle. God says and sends out these instructions, "Hey, and sends out these instructions, "Hey, and sends out these instructions, "Hey, go go send scouts into Canaan and bring go go send scouts into Canaan and bring go go send scouts into Canaan and bring back a report." They come back. They're back a report." They come back. They're back a report." They come back. They're terrified. There's giants in the land. terrified. There's giants in the land. terrified. There's giants in the land. And so they do not take the land, right? And so they do not take the land, right? And so they do not take the land, right? Their lack of trust, they don't take the Their lack of trust, they don't take the Their lack of trust, they don't take the land. And there's a consequence for land. And there's a consequence for land. And there's a consequence for that, which is 40 years of following a that, which is 40 years of following a that, which is 40 years of following a got following God around the wilderness. got following God around the wilderness. got following God around the wilderness. I mean, 40 years. And really what's I mean, 40 years. And really what's I mean, 40 years. And really what's intended by that is that that whole intended by that is that that whole intended by that is that that whole generation, that rebellious generation, generation, that rebellious generation, generation, that rebellious generation, had to die. had to die. had to die. >> Wow. >> Wow. >> Wow. >> It's pretty crazy, right? So then number >> It's pretty crazy, right? So then number >> It's pretty crazy, right? So then number 16, Eric taught this one last week, an 16, Eric taught this one last week, an 16, Eric taught this one last week, an amazing amazing teaching on a very scary amazing amazing teaching on a very scary amazing amazing teaching on a very scary text.

  3. text. text. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Where now you get the the second >> Where now you get the the second >> Where now you get the the second rebellion is now the the leader one of rebellion is now the the leader one of rebellion is now the the leader one of the leaders of the the leaders of the the leaders of the of the Levitical tribe, he rises up of the Levitical tribe, he rises up of the Levitical tribe, he rises up against Moses and Aaron, his own pride against Moses and Aaron, his own pride against Moses and Aaron, his own pride and his jealousy. He wants to step into and his jealousy. He wants to step into and his jealousy. He wants to step into that role. He wants to go into the to that role. He wants to go into the to that role. He wants to go into the to the tent of meeting to meet with God the tent of meeting to meet with God the tent of meeting to meet with God himself. And that is met with some himself. And that is met with some himself. And that is met with some pretty rough pretty rough pretty rough consequences as well. Him and his whole consequences as well. Him and his whole consequences as well. Him and his whole household are swallowed up into the household are swallowed up into the household are swallowed up into the ground. So, a pretty dramatic scene. ground. So, a pretty dramatic scene. ground. So, a pretty dramatic scene. >> Pretty rough right before the others are >> Pretty rough right before the others are >> Pretty rough right before the others are consumed by fire. It's pretty pretty consumed by fire. It's pretty pretty consumed by fire. It's pretty pretty tough. tough. tough. >> Uh that's true. >> Uh that's true. >> Uh that's true. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> That is true. And yet the people still >> That is true. And yet the people still >> That is true. And yet the people still complain. complain. complain. >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> They still >> They still >> They still >> They probably >> They probably >> They probably >> They still grumble. And then Numbers 20, >> They still grumble. And then Numbers 20, >> They still grumble. And then Numbers 20, more complaining, more grumbling. This more complaining, more grumbling. This more complaining, more grumbling. This time they need water. So, we almost as time they need water. So, we almost as time they need water. So, we almost as humans, we kind of understand, hey, humans, we kind of understand, hey, humans, we kind of understand, hey, that's a pretty reasonable request. Like that's a pretty reasonable request. Like that's a pretty reasonable request. Like how many days can you actually go? how many days can you actually go? how many days can you actually go? What's so fascinating to me about this What's so fascinating to me about this What's so fascinating to me about this story and I kind of nerded out in the story and I kind of nerded out in the story and I kind of nerded out in the study. I got way too into it. Maps and study. I got way too into it. Maps and study. I got way too into it. Maps and charts, it was really exciting. Um but charts, it was really exciting. Um but charts, it was really exciting. Um but Numbers 13, the place of the first Numbers 13, the place of the first Numbers 13, the place of the first rebellion where the scouts are sent, rebellion where the scouts are sent, rebellion where the scouts are sent, Numbers 20 where now Moses and Aaron are Numbers 20 where now Moses and Aaron are Numbers 20 where now Moses and Aaron are going to essentially take take things going to essentially take take things going to essentially take take things into their own hands. They're not going into their own hands. They're not going into their own hands. They're not going to do what God said. They're going to to do what God said. They're going to to do what God said. They're going to take over. It happens in the exact same take over. It happens in the exact same take over. It happens in the exact same location.

  4. location. location. It's It's like crazy. It's It's like crazy. It's It's like crazy. >> Wow. >> Wow. >> Wow. >> I mean, Moses now after 38 years since >> I mean, Moses now after 38 years since >> I mean, Moses now after 38 years since the last time Well, I don't know if his the last time Well, I don't know if his the last time Well, I don't know if his last time was in that location, but 38 last time was in that location, but 38 last time was in that location, but 38 years ago in that place, they were years ago in that place, they were years ago in that place, they were condemned to walk the wilderness for 40 condemned to walk the wilderness for 40 condemned to walk the wilderness for 40 years. 38 years later, again, they're in years. 38 years later, again, they're in years. 38 years later, again, they're in the same location and again another the same location and again another the same location and again another consequence is met. Here's the last consequence is met. Here's the last consequence is met. Here's the last thing I'll say. What's crazy about this thing I'll say. What's crazy about this thing I'll say. What's crazy about this location is they're actually only 80 location is they're actually only 80 location is they're actually only 80 miles away from the promised land. Like miles away from the promised land. Like miles away from the promised land. Like they're they're as close we're right now they're they're as close we're right now they're they're as close we're right now in in Southern California in in Southern California in in Southern California from Irvine to Palm Springs is about 80 from Irvine to Palm Springs is about 80 from Irvine to Palm Springs is about 80 miles. miles. miles. >> Yeah, it's crazy. >> Yeah, it's crazy. >> Yeah, it's crazy. >> That's it. >> That's it. >> That's it. >> Wow. >> Wow. >> Wow. >> That's it. Now, that's a long walk. It's >> That's it. Now, that's a long walk. It's >> That's it. Now, that's a long walk. It's probably going to take 4 days to get probably going to take 4 days to get probably going to take 4 days to get there, but like 4 days is not 40 years. there, but like 4 days is not 40 years. there, but like 4 days is not 40 years. So, Moses is in that same place in the So, Moses is in that same place in the So, Moses is in that same place in the third rebellion and he gets prohibited third rebellion and he gets prohibited third rebellion and he gets prohibited from entering. from entering. from entering. >> Oh my gosh. >> Oh my gosh. >> Oh my gosh. >> I know. It's so sad. >> I know. It's so sad. >> I know. It's so sad. >> I know. [laughter] >> I know. [laughter] >> I know. [laughter] I'm so bummed with this chapter, you I'm so bummed with this chapter, you I'm so bummed with this chapter, you know, just know, just know, just >> it is. It's disappointing and I have to >> it is. It's disappointing and I have to >> it is. It's disappointing and I have to believe it's disappointing for God, too. believe it's disappointing for God, too. believe it's disappointing for God, too. >> Yes. >> Yes. >> Yes. Yeah. It It hurts his heart as well. So, Yeah. It It hurts his heart as well. So, Yeah. It It hurts his heart as well. So, um we you touched on this in your um we you touched on this in your um we you touched on this in your message and I'd love for you to share a message and I'd love for you to share a message and I'd love for you to share a little bit. We We do see this pattern little bit. We We do see this pattern little bit. We We do see this pattern throughout scripture and Moses is one of throughout scripture and Moses is one of throughout scripture and Moses is one of them of God wanting to use the word them of God wanting to use the word them of God wanting to use the word partner with a human and part partner partner with a human and part partner partner with a human and part partner with one of his children and we see with one of his children and we see with one of his children and we see failure after failure after failure.

  5. failure after failure after failure. failure after failure after failure. Like what do we learn from this pattern Like what do we learn from this pattern Like what do we learn from this pattern that we see in scripture? that we see in scripture? that we see in scripture? >> Yeah, well, it's a sad pattern. Um you >> Yeah, well, it's a sad pattern. Um you >> Yeah, well, it's a sad pattern. Um you know, God creates the world. He creates know, God creates the world. He creates know, God creates the world. He creates Adam and Eve and he has a partner in Adam and Eve and he has a partner in Adam and Eve and he has a partner in that garden that ultimately fails, that garden that ultimately fails, that garden that ultimately fails, right? So, then you get all kinds of right? So, then you get all kinds of right? So, then you get all kinds of partners. You get Noah. You get Abraham. partners. You get Noah. You get Abraham. partners. You get Noah. You get Abraham. You You get um Moses eventually. And the You You get um Moses eventually. And the You You get um Moses eventually. And the pattern is that God It's not as though pattern is that God It's not as though pattern is that God It's not as though God is incapable of doing what he wants God is incapable of doing what he wants God is incapable of doing what he wants to do without a human, but for some to do without a human, but for some to do without a human, but for some reason the heart of God wants to reason the heart of God wants to reason the heart of God wants to >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> have a human contribution to what is >> have a human contribution to what is >> have a human contribution to what is happening here. And so, the the happening here. And so, the the happening here. And so, the the unfortunate pattern that continues into unfortunate pattern that continues into unfortunate pattern that continues into this story with Moses in chapter 20 of this story with Moses in chapter 20 of this story with Moses in chapter 20 of Numbers is that the human inevitably is Numbers is that the human inevitably is Numbers is that the human inevitably is going to fail. And that cycle, not going to fail. And that cycle, not going to fail. And that cycle, not surprisingly, just continues throughout surprisingly, just continues throughout surprisingly, just continues throughout the whole of the Old Testament. And not the whole of the Old Testament. And not the whole of the Old Testament. And not to give away the end, it's not the end, to give away the end, it's not the end, to give away the end, it's not the end, it was 2,000 years ago, God really got it was 2,000 years ago, God really got it was 2,000 years ago, God really got fed up with all of the failures of the fed up with all of the failures of the fed up with all of the failures of the Old Testament. And so, what does he do? Old Testament. And so, what does he do? Old Testament. And so, what does he do? He sends his own son to be born of this He sends his own son to be born of this He sends his own son to be born of this earth, right? To be the God-man, to be earth, right? To be the God-man, to be earth, right? To be the God-man, to be fully God, fully man. Mind-blowing, like fully God, fully man. Mind-blowing, like fully God, fully man. Mind-blowing, like that's God's response, so that Jesus that's God's response, so that Jesus that's God's response, so that Jesus could live this perfect life and do what could live this perfect life and do what could live this perfect life and do what none of us ever could. God found his none of us ever could. God found his none of us ever could. God found his partner. But, then Jesus ascends back to partner. But, then Jesus ascends back to partner. But, then Jesus ascends back to heaven. So, then what does God do after heaven. So, then what does God do after heaven. So, then what does God do after that? He continues to find human that? He continues to find human that? He continues to find human partners. He gets Peter and Paul and the partners. He gets Peter and Paul and the partners. He gets Peter and Paul and the apostles. It's kind of amazing God apostles. It's kind of amazing God apostles. It's kind of amazing God continues to pursue after partners. But, continues to pursue after partners. But, continues to pursue after partners. But, what's the difference between the Old what's the difference between the Old what's the difference between the Old Testament human partners in the New Testament human partners in the New Testament human partners in the New Testament and today human partners?

  6. Testament and today human partners? Testament and today human partners? Jesus. Jesus. Jesus. Because we still fail, and yet it is Because we still fail, and yet it is Because we still fail, and yet it is Jesus that covers our failure and allows Jesus that covers our failure and allows Jesus that covers our failure and allows us not to face the same kinds of us not to face the same kinds of us not to face the same kinds of punishment that happened in the Old punishment that happened in the Old punishment that happened in the Old Testament. It's really quite beautiful Testament. It's really quite beautiful Testament. It's really quite beautiful that God, even after Jesus, still wants that God, even after Jesus, still wants that God, even after Jesus, still wants to partner with people. to partner with people. to partner with people. Caesarea Philippi story, he gives us the Caesarea Philippi story, he gives us the Caesarea Philippi story, he gives us the keys of the kingdom. keys of the kingdom. keys of the kingdom. >> Yeah. He wants to partner with us. >> Yeah. He wants to partner with us. >> Yeah. He wants to partner with us. >> Yes. >> Yes. >> Yes. >> It wasn't just the apostles in the New >> It wasn't just the apostles in the New >> It wasn't just the apostles in the New Testament and the disciples in the New Testament and the disciples in the New Testament and the disciples in the New Testament who walked with Jesus. Testament who walked with Jesus. Testament who walked with Jesus. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> You. He gives us the keys and then he >> You. He gives us the keys and then he >> You. He gives us the keys and then he gives his own spirit. gives his own spirit. gives his own spirit. >> It's the best. >> It's the best. >> It's the best. >> Yeah. And then we still fail, and and >> Yeah. And then we still fail, and and >> Yeah. And then we still fail, and and that's unfortunate that's unfortunate that's unfortunate for all of us. for all of us. for all of us. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Uh but, it's not in our failure that we >> Uh but, it's not in our failure that we >> Uh but, it's not in our failure that we are lost forever. It's in our failure are lost forever. It's in our failure are lost forever. It's in our failure that we get to experience the grace of that we get to experience the grace of that we get to experience the grace of Jesus. It's amazing. Jesus. It's amazing. Jesus. It's amazing. >> It's great. It's such good news. It's >> It's great. It's such good news. It's >> It's great. It's such good news. It's such good news. such good news. such good news. I want to talk a little bit about uh I want to talk a little bit about uh I want to talk a little bit about uh what we actually see Moses do. And um what we actually see Moses do. And um what we actually see Moses do. And um we, you know, God gives him one we, you know, God gives him one we, you know, God gives him one instruction, he does something instruction, he does something instruction, he does something different. He is disobedient. Just to different. He is disobedient. Just to different. He is disobedient. Just to put it in a completely oversimplified put it in a completely oversimplified put it in a completely oversimplified term, he's disobedient to what God says.

  7. term, he's disobedient to what God says. term, he's disobedient to what God says. And yet God still answers the request by And yet God still answers the request by And yet God still answers the request by bringing the water. You like you said, a bringing the water. You like you said, a bringing the water. You like you said, a reasonable request reasonable request reasonable request to ask for something so life-sustaining. to ask for something so life-sustaining. to ask for something so life-sustaining. So what do we learn then from it's it's So what do we learn then from it's it's So what do we learn then from it's it's you have Moses' disobedience you have Moses' disobedience you have Moses' disobedience but he's still providing for his his but he's still providing for his his but he's still providing for his his people. people. people. What do we what do we make of God's What do we what do we make of God's What do we what do we make of God's character with that? character with that? character with that? >> Right. Well, you know the the the first >> Right. Well, you know the the the first >> Right. Well, you know the the the first consequence was that an entire consequence was that an entire consequence was that an entire generation needed to die before generation needed to die before generation needed to die before apparently the promised land could be apparently the promised land could be apparently the promised land could be available to them. available to them. available to them. So we we have really just a problem So we we have really just a problem So we we have really just a problem Well, it's not a problem of time. If God Well, it's not a problem of time. If God Well, it's not a problem of time. If God wanted to wipe out a whole generation, wanted to wipe out a whole generation, wanted to wipe out a whole generation, he could have. But instead, he just he could have. But instead, he just he could have. But instead, he just decided to let them follow him decided to let them follow him decided to let them follow him throughout the wilderness for for throughout the wilderness for for throughout the wilderness for for decades, right? Now the reality of decades, right? Now the reality of decades, right? Now the reality of humans is that we still need we still humans is that we still need we still humans is that we still need we still need food. We still need water. We still need food. We still need water. We still need food. We still need water. We still need the basic essentials of life. So I need the basic essentials of life. So I need the basic essentials of life. So I don't believe that God was being don't believe that God was being don't believe that God was being dismissive of their actual needs.

  8. dismissive of their actual needs. dismissive of their actual needs. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> So would God provide a way? Of of course >> So would God provide a way? Of of course >> So would God provide a way? Of of course he would. And in fact, what we see in he would. And in fact, what we see in he would. And in fact, what we see in the story is he provides for them the story is he provides for them the story is he provides for them despite the failure of this leader. despite the failure of this leader. despite the failure of this leader. Right? His his um desire to sustain Right? His his um desire to sustain Right? His his um desire to sustain these people was greater than his these people was greater than his these people was greater than his disappointment in in Moses. So he disappointment in in Moses. So he disappointment in in Moses. So he doesn't he doesn't take out his doesn't he doesn't take out his doesn't he doesn't take out his disappointment on Moses on the people. disappointment on Moses on the people. disappointment on Moses on the people. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> He takes it out on Moses. Right? So >> He takes it out on Moses. Right? So >> He takes it out on Moses. Right? So instead, Moses then has to face this instead, Moses then has to face this instead, Moses then has to face this crazy consequence, but the people are crazy consequence, but the people are crazy consequence, but the people are given they're given the water that they given they're given the water that they given they're given the water that they need, the livestock gets what they need, need, the livestock gets what they need, need, the livestock gets what they need, and they actually are there for a while, and they actually are there for a while, and they actually are there for a while, right? So they're they're able to then right? So they're they're able to then right? So they're they're able to then you know, in theory, they're able to to you know, in theory, they're able to to you know, in theory, they're able to to live for a while. And by the way, Moses live for a while. And by the way, Moses live for a while. And by the way, Moses does not die immediately. Like he has does not die immediately. Like he has does not die immediately. Like he has now life to live still in the same role now life to live still in the same role now life to live still in the same role where where where >> he's got to like be reminded they're >> he's got to like be reminded they're >> he's got to like be reminded they're going to go a place that I don't I don't going to go a place that I don't I don't going to go a place that I don't I don't get to go. get to go. get to go. >> Wow. Wow. >> Wow. Wow. >> Wow. Wow. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> The >> The >> The that specific part of the story, it that specific part of the story, it that specific part of the story, it reminds me of the weight of leadership.

  9. reminds me of the weight of leadership. reminds me of the weight of leadership. That being a leader is um the That being a leader is um the That being a leader is um the consequence is different for a leader consequence is different for a leader consequence is different for a leader and the the because of the and the the because of the and the the because of the responsibility that you're interested responsibility that you're interested responsibility that you're interested with as well. with as well. with as well. So um I want to talk a little bit about So um I want to talk a little bit about So um I want to talk a little bit about you shared in your message of how Moses you shared in your message of how Moses you shared in your message of how Moses was given a similar task a few chapters was given a similar task a few chapters was given a similar task a few chapters before in scripture actually in a before in scripture actually in a before in scripture actually in a different book in Exodus. different book in Exodus. different book in Exodus. And And And it was the right thing to do then to it was the right thing to do then to it was the right thing to do then to strike the rock with the staff. strike the rock with the staff. strike the rock with the staff. And but but something looks different And but but something looks different And but but something looks different this time and you said that great phrase this time and you said that great phrase this time and you said that great phrase of what got you here isn't going to What of what got you here isn't going to What of what got you here isn't going to What is it? What got you here won't get you is it? What got you here won't get you is it? What got you here won't get you there? there? there? >> Yeah. Killed it. >> Yeah. Killed it. >> Yeah. Killed it. >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> Such a great phrase. >> Such a great phrase. >> Such a great phrase. >> Such a great phrase. >> Such a great phrase. >> Such a great phrase. >> I didn't come up with it. >> I didn't come up with it. >> I didn't come up with it. >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> That's a pretty common one. >> That's a pretty common one. >> That's a pretty common one. >> Yes. >> Yes. >> Yes. So I'd love for you to just share a So I'd love for you to just share a So I'd love for you to just share a little bit about that and and the little bit about that and and the little bit about that and and the importance of us seeing that in in the importance of us seeing that in in the importance of us seeing that in in the scripture that scripture that scripture that yeah, I mean yeah, I mean yeah, I mean one could read this story and go okay, one could read this story and go okay, one could read this story and go okay, it wasn't like totally unreasonable for it wasn't like totally unreasonable for it wasn't like totally unreasonable for Moses to do that.

  10. Moses to do that. Moses to do that. >> Right. Sure. >> Right. Sure. >> Right. Sure. >> You know, so what do we make of that? >> You know, so what do we make of that? >> You know, so what do we make of that? >> Well, look in Exodus 17, the same >> Well, look in Exodus 17, the same >> Well, look in Exodus 17, the same problem is happening. The people are problem is happening. The people are problem is happening. The people are grumbling. They need water. God goes to grumbling. They need water. God goes to grumbling. They need water. God goes to Moses. I'm sorry. Moses goes to God. God Moses. I'm sorry. Moses goes to God. God Moses. I'm sorry. Moses goes to God. God gives him instructions. gives him instructions. gives him instructions. Strike the rock and water will flow and Strike the rock and water will flow and Strike the rock and water will flow and that's exactly what happens. So it's that's exactly what happens. So it's that's exactly what happens. So it's understandable that this staff that God understandable that this staff that God understandable that this staff that God had provided I don't mean staff like a had provided I don't mean staff like a had provided I don't mean staff like a human team. It's it's a stick, right? human team. It's it's a stick, right? human team. It's it's a stick, right? Like Moses has this tool that that has Like Moses has this tool that that has Like Moses has this tool that that has done amazing things. It has led them done amazing things. It has led them done amazing things. It has led them through the plagues. It It helped them through the plagues. It It helped them through the plagues. It It helped them out of the slavery from from the out of the slavery from from the out of the slavery from from the Egyptians. Egyptians. Egyptians. It split the Red Sea. Like this thing's It split the Red Sea. Like this thing's It split the Red Sea. Like this thing's done a lot. done a lot. done a lot. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And really what happened, I think, is >> And really what happened, I think, is >> And really what happened, I think, is that well, maybe two things happened. that well, maybe two things happened. that well, maybe two things happened. Maybe old habits kind of kick in. And Maybe old habits kind of kick in. And Maybe old habits kind of kick in. And Moses is like the staff is where the Moses is like the staff is where the Moses is like the staff is where the power is. And so he takes the staff and power is. And so he takes the staff and power is. And so he takes the staff and he strikes the rock. he strikes the rock. he strikes the rock. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> He confused the staff for God, the one >> He confused the staff for God, the one >> He confused the staff for God, the one who actually enables the power to happen who actually enables the power to happen who actually enables the power to happen through the staff. It was never the through the staff. It was never the through the staff. It was never the stick itself. It was always that God stick itself. It was always that God stick itself. It was always that God allowed it to happen on behalf Right? So allowed it to happen on behalf Right? So allowed it to happen on behalf Right? So So it was always God. And yet, I think So it was always God. And yet, I think So it was always God. And yet, I think Moses needed to be reminded it was Moses needed to be reminded it was Moses needed to be reminded it was always God.

  11. always God. always God. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> The other thing though is, you know, I >> The other thing though is, you know, I >> The other thing though is, you know, I kind of thought through this. It's like, kind of thought through this. It's like, kind of thought through this. It's like, did Moses just miss it? Like did he did Moses just miss it? Like did he did Moses just miss it? Like did he forget? But I I actually think it's a forget? But I I actually think it's a forget? But I I actually think it's a little more a little more human than little more a little more human than little more a little more human than that. You know, this is a guy for 40 that. You know, this is a guy for 40 that. You know, this is a guy for 40 years he's been dealing with the years he's been dealing with the years he's been dealing with the complaining of these people. He has been complaining of these people. He has been complaining of these people. He has been leading them. And he's at a point where leading them. And he's at a point where leading them. And he's at a point where he's actually frustrated. he's actually frustrated. he's actually frustrated. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Like he is super frustrated with these >> Like he is super frustrated with these >> Like he is super frustrated with these people. So he does the right thing, goes people. So he does the right thing, goes people. So he does the right thing, goes to God. He gets a different set of to God. He gets a different set of to God. He gets a different set of instructions. But I think in his own instructions. But I think in his own instructions. But I think in his own like rage in that moment, he just lets like rage in that moment, he just lets like rage in that moment, he just lets it out. it out. it out. >> Wow. >> Wow. >> Wow. >> Like you know like those feelings you >> Like you know like those feelings you >> Like you know like those feelings you have in life where you just like let me have in life where you just like let me have in life where you just like let me at them. at them. at them. Give Give me a shot. Give Give me a shot. Give Give me a shot. Like Moses took his shot. Like Moses took his shot. Like Moses took his shot. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> He took his shot. And he still he took >> He took his shot. And he still he took >> He took his shot. And he still he took he took that staff and he struck the he took that staff and he struck the he took that staff and he struck the rock. And I imagine that scene like it's rock. And I imagine that scene like it's rock. And I imagine that scene like it's not it's not Rafiki hitting Simba on the not it's not Rafiki hitting Simba on the not it's not Rafiki hitting Simba on the head. This is like head. This is like head. This is like Thor's hammer. You know, like it's rage Thor's hammer. You know, like it's rage Thor's hammer. You know, like it's rage in this moment. in this moment. in this moment. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And what comes out? An abundant flow of >> And what comes out? An abundant flow of >> And what comes out? An abundant flow of water. water. water. I wonder in that moment like how much I wonder in that moment like how much I wonder in that moment like how much time happened between the water flowing time happened between the water flowing time happened between the water flowing and God pulling Moses aside.

  12. and God pulling Moses aside. and God pulling Moses aside. I don't know. I don't know. It doesn't I don't know. I don't know. It doesn't I don't know. I don't know. It doesn't give us an indication. I have no idea. give us an indication. I have no idea. give us an indication. I have no idea. >> That's a that's a whole other layer to >> That's a that's a whole other layer to >> That's a that's a whole other layer to how we, you know, not everything is for how we, you know, not everything is for how we, you know, not everything is for us to say who am I in this passage, you us to say who am I in this passage, you us to say who am I in this passage, you know, like we're not always supposed to know, like we're not always supposed to know, like we're not always supposed to look for us, but um in this case, it's look for us, but um in this case, it's look for us, but um in this case, it's like, man, if God's entrusting you with like, man, if God's entrusting you with like, man, if God's entrusting you with the tool or a resource or even a gift, the tool or a resource or even a gift, the tool or a resource or even a gift, sometimes you can actually see fruit sometimes you can actually see fruit sometimes you can actually see fruit that God's bringing. And still, he he that God's bringing. And still, he he that God's bringing. And still, he he wants to talk to you about it. Still, wants to talk to you about it. Still, wants to talk to you about it. Still, there's there's something that he wants there's there's something that he wants there's there's something that he wants you to learn about about how you're you to learn about about how you're you to learn about about how you're using it. using it. using it. >> look, that we are in a relationship with >> look, that we are in a relationship with >> look, that we are in a relationship with God, which means, as you know, even in God, which means, as you know, even in God, which means, as you know, even in your own human relationships, what your own human relationships, what your own human relationships, what happened when you first met a person, if happened when you first met a person, if happened when you first met a person, if it's a a marriage, right? Let's take a it's a a marriage, right? Let's take a it's a a marriage, right? Let's take a marriage as an example. You first meet, marriage as an example. You first meet, marriage as an example. You first meet, you date, you engage, you get married, you date, you engage, you get married, you date, you engage, you get married, and then marriage is however long and then marriage is however long and then marriage is however long marriage is. There are lots of changes marriage is. There are lots of changes marriage is. There are lots of changes that happen in the dynamic of your that happen in the dynamic of your that happen in the dynamic of your relationship. What happened in dating relationship. What happened in dating relationship. What happened in dating life is different than engagement is life is different than engagement is life is different than engagement is different than the various phases of different than the various phases of different than the various phases of your of your marriage, let alone if your of your marriage, let alone if your of your marriage, let alone if circumstance happens in your marriage.

  13. circumstance happens in your marriage. circumstance happens in your marriage. You go through a loss together. You pick You go through a loss together. You pick You go through a loss together. You pick up and move across the country. Like, up and move across the country. Like, up and move across the country. Like, things have to change in order for the things have to change in order for the things have to change in order for the the health of that marriage to continue the health of that marriage to continue the health of that marriage to continue to grow. to grow. to grow. I think in our own relationship with I think in our own relationship with I think in our own relationship with God, it's a little similar. If you just God, it's a little similar. If you just God, it's a little similar. If you just assume what has always worked in my assume what has always worked in my assume what has always worked in my relationship with God, if I do these relationship with God, if I do these relationship with God, if I do these things, I will hear from God, things, I will hear from God, things, I will hear from God, guess what? At some point, God's going guess what? At some point, God's going guess what? At some point, God's going to stop allowing you to hear him because to stop allowing you to hear him because to stop allowing you to hear him because he doesn't want you just to keep doing he doesn't want you just to keep doing he doesn't want you just to keep doing the same old things. He wants you to the same old things. He wants you to the same old things. He wants you to want a relationship with him more than want a relationship with him more than want a relationship with him more than you want to just do your routine because you want to just do your routine because you want to just do your routine because it produces something for you. Isn't it produces something for you. Isn't it produces something for you. Isn't that Isn't that an interesting thought? that Isn't that an interesting thought? that Isn't that an interesting thought? >> It's like the difference between >> It's like the difference between >> It's like the difference between just to follow the marriage narrative, just to follow the marriage narrative, just to follow the marriage narrative, but there's a seeking out that he hopes but there's a seeking out that he hopes but there's a seeking out that he hopes that we'll do. That an actual pursuit of that we'll do. That an actual pursuit of that we'll do. That an actual pursuit of God that we'll do. And how much better God that we'll do. And how much better God that we'll do. And how much better does it feel when your spouse is does it feel when your spouse is does it feel when your spouse is pursuing you than, you know, just the pursuing you than, you know, just the pursuing you than, you know, just the built-in couch time at the end of the built-in couch time at the end of the built-in couch time at the end of the >> Yeah, totally. You know. >> Yeah, totally. You know. >> Yeah, totally. You know. >> Yeah, just the assumption of a >> Yeah, just the assumption of a >> Yeah, just the assumption of a relationship, it's all fine. I already relationship, it's all fine. I already relationship, it's all fine. I already know. We don't need to talk about it, know. We don't need to talk about it, know. We don't need to talk about it, you know, or or everything just gets you know, or or everything just gets you know, or or everything just gets routinized in our life. And sometimes routinized in our life. And sometimes routinized in our life. And sometimes that's good. I'm not trying to say that that's good. I'm not trying to say that that's good. I'm not trying to say that disciplines are bad. That was my last disciplines are bad. That was my last disciplines are bad. That was my last message I taught was all about message I taught was all about message I taught was all about disciplines. But, um when we confuse disciplines. But, um when we confuse disciplines. But, um when we confuse disciplines for being the thing that disciplines for being the thing that disciplines for being the thing that matter most, it's kind of like Moses matter most, it's kind of like Moses matter most, it's kind of like Moses confusing the staff for the power of confusing the staff for the power of confusing the staff for the power of God.

  14. God. God. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> God is the one who allowed that to >> God is the one who allowed that to >> God is the one who allowed that to happen. So, we should desire more God happen. So, we should desire more God happen. So, we should desire more God >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> than we do just simply doing the things >> than we do just simply doing the things >> than we do just simply doing the things that allow us to experience God. that allow us to experience God. that allow us to experience God. >> Wow. >> Wow. >> Wow. That's a that's a good good distinction. That's a that's a good good distinction. That's a that's a good good distinction. Convicting. Really convicting. Convicting. Really convicting. Convicting. Really convicting. Um I want to I want to point out how Um I want to I want to point out how Um I want to I want to point out how uh Moses actually calls the Israelites uh Moses actually calls the Israelites uh Moses actually calls the Israelites rebels. rebels. rebels. >> Oh, yeah. >> Oh, yeah. >> Oh, yeah. >> And you were I'm just going to let you >> And you were I'm just going to let you >> And you were I'm just going to let you talk about it cuz you were saying some talk about it cuz you were saying some talk about it cuz you were saying some great stuff before we got going, but great stuff before we got going, but great stuff before we got going, but we're we're basically looking at him we're we're basically looking at him we're we're basically looking at him condemn the people. And I I want to just condemn the people. And I I want to just condemn the people. And I I want to just dialogue a little bit about what do we dialogue a little bit about what do we dialogue a little bit about what do we learn about our job in this? You know, learn about our job in this? You know, learn about our job in this? You know, what what's our role in judgment? what what's our role in judgment? what what's our role in judgment? >> Well, I would have said the same thing, >> Well, I would have said the same thing, >> Well, I would have said the same thing, you know. I mean, [laughter] it's you know. I mean, [laughter] it's you know. I mean, [laughter] it's totally totally totally You give him an opportunity. It's like You give him an opportunity. It's like You give him an opportunity. It's like that's exactly what was going on. These that's exactly what was going on. These that's exactly what was going on. These people were they were rebellious. They people were they were rebellious. They people were they were rebellious. They were um were um were um they just continued to pester, right? they just continued to pester, right? they just continued to pester, right? And I I don't want to set up a scene as And I I don't want to set up a scene as And I I don't want to set up a scene as though Moses was always antagonistic though Moses was always antagonistic though Moses was always antagonistic against the the people of God. There was against the the people of God. There was against the the people of God. There was obviously great love for them, and and obviously great love for them, and and obviously great love for them, and and there was close relationships, although there was close relationships, although there was close relationships, although we're talking about like a million plus we're talking about like a million plus we're talking about like a million plus people. Um but he does he does kind of people. Um but he does he does kind of people. Um but he does he does kind of take an opportunity here to when God take an opportunity here to when God take an opportunity here to when God says uh take your staff and speak to the says uh take your staff and speak to the says uh take your staff and speak to the rock, Moses walks out of the tent, he rock, Moses walks out of the tent, he rock, Moses walks out of the tent, he took his staff, and he spoke to the took his staff, and he spoke to the took his staff, and he spoke to the people.

  15. people. people. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> A critical misstep because the rock was >> A critical misstep because the rock was >> A critical misstep because the rock was right there. But, instead of speaking to right there. But, instead of speaking to right there. But, instead of speaking to the rock, he turned his attention to the the rock, he turned his attention to the the rock, he turned his attention to the people in which he was so frustrated people in which he was so frustrated people in which he was so frustrated with. And he's like, "You rebels!" You with. And he's like, "You rebels!" You with. And he's like, "You rebels!" You can just imagine. It's such a great can just imagine. It's such a great can just imagine. It's such a great scene. scene. scene. And and it's in that it's it's a sad And and it's in that it's it's a sad And and it's in that it's it's a sad it's a sad moment. It's the most it's a sad moment. It's the most it's a sad moment. It's the most devastating moment for for Moses because devastating moment for for Moses because devastating moment for for Moses because not only does he just vent and take out not only does he just vent and take out not only does he just vent and take out his anger, it's in that moment where he his anger, it's in that moment where he his anger, it's in that moment where he disobeys God and he puts himself in the disobeys God and he puts himself in the disobeys God and he puts himself in the seat of seat of seat of judge judge judge and and ultimately provider as well. So, and and ultimately provider as well. So, and and ultimately provider as well. So, he judges them, he judges them, he judges them, calls them these rebels, right? He spoke calls them these rebels, right? He spoke calls them these rebels, right? He spoke to the people and he also spoke on God's to the people and he also spoke on God's to the people and he also spoke on God's behalf. When God has a heart for these behalf. When God has a heart for these behalf. When God has a heart for these people, God is going to do something in people, God is going to do something in people, God is going to do something in just a second to provide for these just a second to provide for these just a second to provide for these people. So, he spoke on God's behalf and people. So, he spoke on God's behalf and people. So, he spoke on God's behalf and he was wrong about it. he was wrong about it. he was wrong about it. And then he strikes the rock, which he's And then he strikes the rock, which he's And then he strikes the rock, which he's not supposed to do. God provides. So, not supposed to do. God provides. So, not supposed to do. God provides. So, it's this really fascinating contrast of it's this really fascinating contrast of it's this really fascinating contrast of they were rebellious and yet it wasn't they were rebellious and yet it wasn't they were rebellious and yet it wasn't Moses's place to declare that over them.

  16. Moses's place to declare that over them. Moses's place to declare that over them. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Yeah. Yeah. It's this this chapter in the book of It's this this chapter in the book of It's this this chapter in the book of Numbers seems to be the a bit of a Numbers seems to be the a bit of a Numbers seems to be the a bit of a turning point because up until now the turning point because up until now the turning point because up until now the leaders have been healthy, the leaders leaders have been healthy, the leaders leaders have been healthy, the leaders have been convicted and faithful, and have been convicted and faithful, and have been convicted and faithful, and the people have been the rebels. the people have been the rebels. the people have been the rebels. The people have been unfaithful. The people have been unfaithful. The people have been unfaithful. >> Right. >> Right. >> Right. >> And now this time I'm getting let down >> And now this time I'm getting let down >> And now this time I'm getting let down by my hero. by my hero. by my hero. >> Yeah, it's true. No, it's true. >> Yeah, it's true. No, it's true. >> Yeah, it's true. No, it's true. >> It is heartbreaking. >> It is heartbreaking. >> It is heartbreaking. Um and the fact that he doesn't get to Um and the fact that he doesn't get to Um and the fact that he doesn't get to go into the promised land, what you were go into the promised land, what you were go into the promised land, what you were sharing just a minute ago about like sharing just a minute ago about like sharing just a minute ago about like that he had to live many more years with that he had to live many more years with that he had to live many more years with that truth cuz God told him. It's that truth cuz God told him. It's that truth cuz God told him. It's painful. painful. painful. >> No, it is. >> No, it is. >> No, it is. >> What do we what what do we know about >> What do we what what do we know about >> What do we what what do we know about about Moses from the rest of scripture? about Moses from the rest of scripture? about Moses from the rest of scripture? >> Well, right. I mean, it's a it's a it is >> Well, right. I mean, it's a it's a it is >> Well, right. I mean, it's a it's a it is a sad story and I think it's okay to be a sad story and I think it's okay to be a sad story and I think it's okay to be sad about it, you know, because Moses sad about it, you know, because Moses sad about it, you know, because Moses Moses was the man. And he knew about Moses was the man. And he knew about Moses was the man. And he knew about this great promise and if anyone's been this great promise and if anyone's been this great promise and if anyone's been in a position of leadership for decades, in a position of leadership for decades, in a position of leadership for decades, the kind of of energy and focus it takes the kind of of energy and focus it takes the kind of of energy and focus it takes to lead well for that long is to lead well for that long is to lead well for that long is it is thankless and it is very tiring.

  17. it is thankless and it is very tiring. it is thankless and it is very tiring. And Moses did it up until this point. And Moses did it up until this point. And Moses did it up until this point. >> [snorts] >> [snorts] >> [snorts] >> And so, yeah, we can kind of look at God >> And so, yeah, we can kind of look at God >> And so, yeah, we can kind of look at God and be like, that's so harsh, right? But and be like, that's so harsh, right? But and be like, that's so harsh, right? But the holiness of God is not something to the holiness of God is not something to the holiness of God is not something to mess with and that's what That's mess with and that's what That's mess with and that's what That's ultimately what Moses learned in this in ultimately what Moses learned in this in ultimately what Moses learned in this in this story. But it also is, when you this story. But it also is, when you this story. But it also is, when you zoom out the macro picture like where we zoom out the macro picture like where we zoom out the macro picture like where we started, started, started, um this is just another human that fall um this is just another human that fall um this is just another human that fall that fails in their partnership with that fails in their partnership with that fails in their partnership with God. That is inevitably what this is. God. That is inevitably what this is. God. That is inevitably what this is. What's kind of amazing though, this What's kind of amazing though, this What's kind of amazing though, this chapter, Numbers 20, chapter, Numbers 20, chapter, Numbers 20, uh we didn't even really touch on it, uh we didn't even really touch on it, uh we didn't even really touch on it, but you know, Miriam dies in the first but you know, Miriam dies in the first but you know, Miriam dies in the first verse and then we didn't teach it in the verse and then we didn't teach it in the verse and then we didn't teach it in the text, but if you go to the end of text, but if you go to the end of text, but if you go to the end of chapter 20, Aaron dies. So, two of the chapter 20, Aaron dies. So, two of the chapter 20, Aaron dies. So, two of the three are gone in this one and Moses is three are gone in this one and Moses is three are gone in this one and Moses is left knowing he's never going to cross left knowing he's never going to cross left knowing he's never going to cross into the to the promised land. So, it into the to the promised land. So, it into the to the promised land. So, it leaves you kind of hopeless. It leaves leaves you kind of hopeless. It leaves leaves you kind of hopeless. It leaves you um feeling like, does Moses really you um feeling like, does Moses really you um feeling like, does Moses really deserve this after so many years of deserve this after so many years of deserve this after so many years of service? There's good news for Moses. service? There's good news for Moses. service? There's good news for Moses. There's good news for Moses. There's good news for Moses. There's good news for Moses. >> Tell us, Jared. >> Tell us, Jared. >> Tell us, Jared. >> Well, okay. Uh first of all, before >> Well, okay. Uh first of all, before >> Well, okay. Uh first of all, before before the good news of that, what is before the good news of that, what is before the good news of that, what is kind of amazing about the way scripture kind of amazing about the way scripture kind of amazing about the way scripture is written is that the one who picks up is written is that the one who picks up is written is that the one who picks up the story and takes them into the the story and takes them into the the story and takes them into the promised land, his name is Joshua, which promised land, his name is Joshua, which promised land, his name is Joshua, which is the Old Testament name for Jesus, is the Old Testament name for Jesus, is the Old Testament name for Jesus, which is not lost on any of us. It's which is not lost on any of us. It's which is not lost on any of us. It's It's so It's so cool. The fact that It's so It's so cool. The fact that It's so It's so cool. The fact that Moses has taken them up into this point, Moses has taken them up into this point, Moses has taken them up into this point, he fails and it is It is Jesus, Joshua, he fails and it is It is Jesus, Joshua, he fails and it is It is Jesus, Joshua, not literally Jesus. It's just the same not literally Jesus. It's just the same not literally Jesus. It's just the same name, but it is the one who brings them name, but it is the one who brings them name, but it is the one who brings them into the promised land. That's a into the promised land. That's a into the promised land. That's a beautiful foreshadowing of Jesus is

  18. beautiful foreshadowing of Jesus is beautiful foreshadowing of Jesus is going to forever and only be the one who going to forever and only be the one who going to forever and only be the one who can take us into the promised land. It's can take us into the promised land. It's can take us into the promised land. It's awesome. Okay, so what about Moses? awesome. Okay, so what about Moses? awesome. Okay, so what about Moses? Well, the good news for Moses is that if Well, the good news for Moses is that if Well, the good news for Moses is that if you go to Hebrews chapter 11, he is you go to Hebrews chapter 11, he is you go to Hebrews chapter 11, he is listed in like the great hall of faith. listed in like the great hall of faith. listed in like the great hall of faith. So, he's not written out of history. So, he's not written out of history. So, he's not written out of history. That's a good thing. The other thing That's a good thing. The other thing That's a good thing. The other thing that is unbelievable is the that is unbelievable is the that is unbelievable is the transfiguration scene where Jesus is transfiguration scene where Jesus is transfiguration scene where Jesus is transformed into to glorious body. Who transformed into to glorious body. Who transformed into to glorious body. Who shows up in that scene? Moses. He is shows up in that scene? Moses. He is shows up in that scene? Moses. He is there. It's awesome. So, the good news there. It's awesome. So, the good news there. It's awesome. So, the good news is he's experiencing eternal glory. is he's experiencing eternal glory. is he's experiencing eternal glory. Not forever consequence or not forever Not forever consequence or not forever Not forever consequence or not forever punishment, you know. Paid a Paid a big punishment, you know.
