God, we're asking you that by your God, we're asking you that by your God, we're asking you that by your spirit, Lord, that that you would take spirit, Lord, that that you would take spirit, Lord, that that you would take this word, this word, this word, that you would apply it to our hearts, that you would apply it to our hearts, that you would apply it to our hearts, our hearts would be bent toward you, our hearts would be bent toward you, our hearts would be bent toward you, and you'd conform us to the image of and you'd conform us to the image of and you'd conform us to the image of your son. Father, we are asking for that your son. Father, we are asking for that your son. Father, we are asking for that today.

  28. today. today. And it's in the name of Jesus we pray. And it's in the name of Jesus we pray. And it's in the name of Jesus we pray. Amen. Amen. Amen. We may be seated once again. So, you see in this fourth chapter, it So, you see in this fourth chapter, it seems to be a strange place to end. In seems to be a strange place to end. In seems to be a strange place to end. In fact, it ends on a question fact, it ends on a question fact, it ends on a question that it is not answered. that it is not answered. that it is not answered. And so now, And so now, And so now, in Jonah chapter 4, we get done reading in Jonah chapter 4, we get done reading in Jonah chapter 4, we get done reading it and now it's going to feel like you it and now it's going to feel like you it and now it's going to feel like you held in a sneeze all day because you held in a sneeze all day because you held in a sneeze all day because you don't know the answer to this question don't know the answer to this question don't know the answer to this question that was just kind of a cliffhanger for that was just kind of a cliffhanger for that was just kind of a cliffhanger for us. But, here's what is incredible about us. But, here's what is incredible about us. But, here's what is incredible about questions from the Lord. questions from the Lord. questions from the Lord. Does God need you to answer in order for Does God need you to answer in order for Does God need you to answer in order for him to know? him to know? him to know? Absolutely not. Absolutely not. Absolutely not. There has never been a time in There has never been a time in There has never been a time in scripture, which is several times. We scripture, which is several times. We scripture, which is several times. We can see this throughout the Old can see this throughout the Old can see this throughout the Old Testament and New Testament, but you see Testament and New Testament, but you see Testament and New Testament, but you see several times throughout scripture the several times throughout scripture the several times throughout scripture the Lord asking questions. Lord asking questions. Lord asking questions. Particularly, you go back to Genesis Particularly, you go back to Genesis Particularly, you go back to Genesis chapter 3.

  29. chapter 3. chapter 3. After sin occurred, After sin occurred, After sin occurred, and and and they are hiding. Adam and Eve are they are hiding. Adam and Eve are they are hiding. Adam and Eve are hiding. hiding. hiding. Um in the same way that Jonah was trying Um in the same way that Jonah was trying Um in the same way that Jonah was trying to hide from the Lord, flee from the to hide from the Lord, flee from the to hide from the Lord, flee from the presence of God. Now, Adam and Eve, presence of God. Now, Adam and Eve, presence of God. Now, Adam and Eve, they're hiding from the Lord, trying to they're hiding from the Lord, trying to they're hiding from the Lord, trying to flee from his presence because they know flee from his presence because they know flee from his presence because they know that sin has done something that they that sin has done something that they that sin has done something that they have to now hide away from God. In the have to now hide away from God. In the have to now hide away from God. In the same way that the seraphim, who are same way that the seraphim, who are same way that the seraphim, who are surrounding the throne of God at this surrounding the throne of God at this surrounding the throne of God at this very moment, are covering their faces very moment, are covering their faces very moment, are covering their faces because they could not possibly look because they could not possibly look because they could not possibly look upon the holiness of God. the Lord asked Adam, the Lord asked Adam, "Where are you?" Even in the story of Genesis chapter 4 Even in the story of Genesis chapter 4 between Cain and Abel, he asked this between Cain and Abel, he asked this between Cain and Abel, he asked this question, "What have you done?" question, "What have you done?" question, "What have you done?" The Lord already knows.

  30. The Lord already knows. The Lord already knows. The Lord knows intimately not only what The Lord knows intimately not only what The Lord knows intimately not only what you did, but why you did it. He even you did, but why you did it. He even you did, but why you did it. He even knows the heart behind it. So, when we knows the heart behind it. So, when we knows the heart behind it. So, when we look at this question uh twice from the look at this question uh twice from the look at this question uh twice from the Lord to Jonah, what is he doing? If If Lord to Jonah, what is he doing? If If Lord to Jonah, what is he doing? If If he is not trying to acquire information, he is not trying to acquire information, he is not trying to acquire information, what is he doing? See, this is the what is he doing? See, this is the what is he doing? See, this is the importance of questions. Questions from importance of questions. Questions from importance of questions. Questions from the Lord are not for his informative the Lord are not for his informative the Lord are not for his informative person purpose. It is for person purpose. It is for person purpose. It is for the Lord to expose something in Jonah's the Lord to expose something in Jonah's the Lord to expose something in Jonah's heart. heart. heart. The questions of scripture are meant for The questions of scripture are meant for The questions of scripture are meant for exposing. exposing. exposing. And it's the same for us. The questions And it's the same for us. The questions And it's the same for us. The questions that are asked in Jonah are the that are asked in Jonah are the that are asked in Jonah are the questions that have to be asked of us. questions that have to be asked of us. questions that have to be asked of us. Because every single one of us, we are Because every single one of us, we are Because every single one of us, we are in the same category together. We have a in the same category together. We have a in the same category together. We have a temptation temptation temptation to forget the grace of God and then to forget the grace of God and then to forget the grace of God and then drift from the heart of God. We all have drift from the heart of God. We all have drift from the heart of God. We all have this temptation.

  31. this temptation. this temptation. We are all like sheep who have gone We are all like sheep who have gone We are all like sheep who have gone astray. We are prone to wander. So, what are we to do? So, what are we to do? If we are all in the same category If we are all in the same category If we are all in the same category together, if every saint of the past together, if every saint of the past together, if every saint of the past throughout history is in this same throughout history is in this same throughout history is in this same category, then what are we supposed to category, then what are we supposed to category, then what are we supposed to do? Well, I think that this is what do? Well, I think that this is what do? Well, I think that this is what Jonah chapter 4 really teaches us. Jonah chapter 4 really teaches us. Jonah chapter 4 really teaches us. It teaches us what to look for for It teaches us what to look for for It teaches us what to look for for indicators in our lives that we can know indicators in our lives that we can know indicators in our lives that we can know what God is confronting by his grace. what God is confronting by his grace. what God is confronting by his grace. Because it is the gracious act of God to Because it is the gracious act of God to Because it is the gracious act of God to confront anything in your heart that is confront anything in your heart that is confront anything in your heart that is unlike him. unlike him. unlike him. It's the gracious act of God. It's the gracious act of God. It's the gracious act of God. It's him by his grace bringing you back It's him by his grace bringing you back It's him by his grace bringing you back into the fold of God. into the fold of God. into the fold of God. And the first thing that we see about And the first thing that we see about And the first thing that we see about this is that grace confronts our anger.

  32. Grace confronts our anger. Grace confronts our anger. You may be thinking to yourself right You may be thinking to yourself right You may be thinking to yourself right now, well, the good news is I don't have now, well, the good news is I don't have now, well, the good news is I don't have any anger problems. Let me just give everybody a warning. Let me just give everybody a warning. We all have anger We all have anger We all have anger problems. Every single one of us. Every single one of us. It may manifest itself differently, It may manifest itself differently, It may manifest itself differently, but have you ever dealt with bitterness but have you ever dealt with bitterness but have you ever dealt with bitterness in your heart? in your heart? in your heart? Have you ever dealt with having a hard Have you ever dealt with having a hard Have you ever dealt with having a hard time forgiving someone? Have you ever had a hard time Have you ever had a hard time understanding an opposite political view understanding an opposite political view understanding an opposite political view that turns into this burning in your that turns into this burning in your that turns into this burning in your heart? heart? heart? It's what people say, "My blood is It's what people say, "My blood is It's what people say, "My blood is boiling." Right? We actually all deal with these things. We actually all deal with these things. Varying degrees, sure, but we all have Varying degrees, sure, but we all have Varying degrees, sure, but we all have problems with anger.

  33. problems with anger. problems with anger. Jonah certainly did. Jonah even says it out loud. Jonah even says it out loud. The problem with you and me at times is The problem with you and me at times is The problem with you and me at times is that that that we just try to bury it, not deal with we just try to bury it, not deal with we just try to bury it, not deal with it. it. it. We just try to pretend like it doesn't We just try to pretend like it doesn't We just try to pretend like it doesn't exist. exist. exist. And then we blow a gasket somewhere And then we blow a gasket somewhere And then we blow a gasket somewhere else, right? I mean, that's just kind of else, right? I mean, that's just kind of else, right? I mean, that's just kind of how it happens. It's got to come out how it happens. It's got to come out how it happens. It's got to come out somewhere, but Jonah just says it. somewhere, but Jonah just says it. somewhere, but Jonah just says it. It's like Jonah is exposing himself It's like Jonah is exposing himself It's like Jonah is exposing himself right now. right now. right now. It's almost like he's telling on himself It's almost like he's telling on himself It's almost like he's telling on himself to the Lord. to the Lord. to the Lord. Verse one says, "Jonah was greatly Verse one says, "Jonah was greatly Verse one says, "Jonah was greatly displeased displeased displeased and became furious." There's not a better word. I think There's not a better word. I think furious is a really good translation furious is a really good translation furious is a really good translation because it's more than anger. It's this because it's more than anger. It's this because it's more than anger. It's this burning, boiling blood within you that burning, boiling blood within you that burning, boiling blood within you that is now raging from you. is now raging from you. is now raging from you. It's the idea of spewing hatred.

  34. It's the idea of spewing hatred. It's the idea of spewing hatred. Spewing evil. Spewing evil. Spewing evil. Jonah is Jonah is Jonah is basically saying to the Lord, "What you basically saying to the Lord, "What you basically saying to the Lord, "What you have done is evil to Nineveh." have done is evil to Nineveh." have done is evil to Nineveh." Like this is anger issues, okay? This is Like this is anger issues, okay? This is Like this is anger issues, okay? This is problematic for this runaway prophet. problematic for this runaway prophet. problematic for this runaway prophet. But then there's something that happens But then there's something that happens But then there's something that happens and he prays. So in his anger, he prays. It says in So in his anger, he prays. It says in verse two, he prayed to the Lord, verse two, he prayed to the Lord, verse two, he prayed to the Lord, "Please, Lord, isn't this what I said "Please, Lord, isn't this what I said "Please, Lord, isn't this what I said while I was still in my own country?" while I was still in my own country?" while I was still in my own country?" That's why I fled toward Tarshish in the That's why I fled toward Tarshish in the That's why I fled toward Tarshish in the first place. first place. first place. I knew I knew I knew that you are a gracious and that you are a gracious and that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger, compassionate God, slow to anger, compassionate God, slow to anger, abounding in faithful love, and one who abounding in faithful love, and one who abounding in faithful love, and one who relents from sending disaster. Jonah is relents from sending disaster. Jonah is relents from sending disaster. Jonah is reaching back. I mean, he is quoting reaching back. I mean, he is quoting reaching back. I mean, he is quoting Exodus chapter 34 here and he is talking Exodus chapter 34 here and he is talking Exodus chapter 34 here and he is talking truth [snorts] to God in his prayer.

  35. truth [snorts] to God in his prayer. truth [snorts] to God in his prayer. He's talking about the graciousness of He's talking about the graciousness of He's talking about the graciousness of God, the the compassion of God, the fact God, the the compassion of God, the fact God, the the compassion of God, the fact that he is slow to anger, he is that he is slow to anger, he is that he is slow to anger, he is abounding in faithful and steadfast abounding in faithful and steadfast abounding in faithful and steadfast love. He is naming true things about love. He is naming true things about love. He is naming true things about God. And so the question is, then why is God. And so the question is, then why is God. And so the question is, then why is Jonah so angry? Jonah so angry? Jonah so angry? Why is Jonah so angry? Jonah has raised himself to a position Jonah has raised himself to a position of judge over the people of God and over of judge over the people of God and over of judge over the people of God and over the Gentiles. the Gentiles. the Gentiles. He is determining what he thinks would He is determining what he thinks would He is determining what he thinks would be best as far as judgment for these be best as far as judgment for these be best as far as judgment for these wicked Ninevites. wicked Ninevites. wicked Ninevites. And he knew And he knew And he knew he knew if he preached those words. I he knew if he preached those words. I he knew if he preached those words. I mean, I mean, let's think about it. All mean, I mean, let's think about it. All mean, I mean, let's think about it. All he gave were eight words, right? he gave were eight words, right? he gave were eight words, right? In Hebrew, five words, but all he gave In Hebrew, five words, but all he gave In Hebrew, five words, but all he gave was this short sermon. was this short sermon. was this short sermon. And everybody came uh to to to And everybody came uh to to to And everybody came uh to to to repentance in the Lord. And Jonah, repentance in the Lord. And Jonah, repentance in the Lord. And Jonah, that's what he is furious about because that's what he is furious about because that's what he is furious about because he knew it was going to happen. He knew he knew it was going to happen. He knew he knew it was going to happen. He knew that God was going to be compassionate.

  36. that God was going to be compassionate. that God was going to be compassionate. He knew that God was going to do exactly He knew that God was going to do exactly He knew that God was going to do exactly what he says he's going to do. Jonah what he says he's going to do. Jonah what he says he's going to do. Jonah knew the truth, and he does not believe knew the truth, and he does not believe knew the truth, and he does not believe with anything in him that the Ninevites with anything in him that the Ninevites with anything in him that the Ninevites deserve it. Jonah has completely forgotten the grace Jonah has completely forgotten the grace that has been bestowed on his life. that has been bestowed on his life. that has been bestowed on his life. Think about the irony. Think about the irony. Think about the irony. Jonah should have died already. Jonah should have died at sea, and yet Jonah should have died at sea, and yet by God's grace by God's grace by God's grace he sends a fish to swallow him, he sends a fish to swallow him, he sends a fish to swallow him, to save him. to save him. to save him. And it's this prophet who has And it's this prophet who has And it's this prophet who has who has received all of the grace of who has received all of the grace of who has received all of the grace of God, who is now bitter toward others who God, who is now bitter toward others who God, who is now bitter toward others who have received that same grace. Here's have received that same grace. Here's have received that same grace. Here's what Jonah has a problem with. Jonah has what Jonah has a problem with. Jonah has what Jonah has a problem with. Jonah has a problem of judging sin. a problem of judging sin. a problem of judging sin. In Jonah's mind, his sin is not as great In Jonah's mind, his sin is not as great In Jonah's mind, his sin is not as great as the Ninevites.

  37. It's the same problem with the Pharisees It's the same problem with the Pharisees in the New Testament that Jesus in the New Testament that Jesus in the New Testament that Jesus addresses over and over and over again. addresses over and over and over again. addresses over and over and over again. They're like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. They're like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. They're like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. We get it, but We get it, but We get it, but we are the ones who actually work we are the ones who actually work we are the ones who actually work for the grace of God." for the grace of God." for the grace of God." Those Ninevites, they did nothing. Those Ninevites, they did nothing. Those Ninevites, they did nothing. And Jonah thinks because he's some And Jonah thinks because he's some And Jonah thinks because he's some prophet that he deserves more grace. And prophet that he deserves more grace. And prophet that he deserves more grace. And then we think to ourselves, "Okay, then we think to ourselves, "Okay, then we think to ourselves, "Okay, is that me in my own life?" I mean, because you and I deal with the I mean, because you and I deal with the same temptation here. You and I deal same temptation here. You and I deal same temptation here. You and I deal with the same uh uh procedural thought with the same uh uh procedural thought with the same uh uh procedural thought of how God gives grace. of how God gives grace. of how God gives grace. I mean, think about the prodigal son. I mean, think about the prodigal son. I mean, think about the prodigal son. I mean, you know the story most likely I mean, you know the story most likely I mean, you know the story most likely in in in Luke chapter 15 of the prodigal son. This son, the the younger brother, This son, the the younger brother, he demands for his inheritance from his he demands for his inheritance from his he demands for his inheritance from his father. father. father. And then his father gives it to him. And then his father gives it to him. And then his father gives it to him. This son, the younger son, he takes all This son, the younger son, he takes all This son, the younger son, he takes all of it. He runs away basically saying, of it. He runs away basically saying, of it. He runs away basically saying, "Dad, you are dead to me. I don't ever "Dad, you are dead to me. I don't ever "Dad, you are dead to me. I don't ever want to see you again. I just want my want to see you again. I just want my want to see you again. I just want my your money. I want what is owed to me.

  38. your money. I want what is owed to me. your money. I want what is owed to me. And then I don't ever want to see you And then I don't ever want to see you And then I don't ever want to see you again. I'm gone." And then he finds again. I'm gone." And then he finds again. I'm gone." And then he finds himself completely completely himself completely completely himself completely completely devastated. devastated. devastated. Completely ruined. He's living among the Completely ruined. He's living among the Completely ruined. He's living among the pigs in a pigsty trying to just survive. pigs in a pigsty trying to just survive. pigs in a pigsty trying to just survive. And then he comes to the end of himself, And then he comes to the end of himself, And then he comes to the end of himself, realizes what he has done. He goes back realizes what he has done. He goes back realizes what he has done. He goes back to his father and he's he's basically to his father and he's he's basically to his father and he's he's basically saying, "Look, just just let me be a saying, "Look, just just let me be a saying, "Look, just just let me be a servant in your house." servant in your house." servant in your house." But instead of that idea, the father But instead of that idea, the father But instead of that idea, the father sees him from a long way off, right? And sees him from a long way off, right? And sees him from a long way off, right? And the father runs to him and he clothes the father runs to him and he clothes the father runs to him and he clothes him. He gives him everything. He he him. He gives him everything. He he him. He gives him everything. He he kills the fattened calf. They have a kills the fattened calf. They have a kills the fattened calf. They have a party. Finally, my son who I thought was party. Finally, my son who I thought was party. Finally, my son who I thought was dead is alive. He is back with me. dead is alive. He is back with me. dead is alive. He is back with me. Everyone, let's celebrate. Just like in Jonah with all of Nineveh Just like in Jonah with all of Nineveh coming to the Lord, repenting, turning coming to the Lord, repenting, turning coming to the Lord, repenting, turning from their wicked ways, and turning to from their wicked ways, and turning to from their wicked ways, and turning to God, God, God, everybody's rejoicing. Everybody's everybody's rejoicing. Everybody's everybody's rejoicing. Everybody's celebrating except Jonah.

  39. And there was one that was not And there was one that was not celebrating in Luke 15. celebrating in Luke 15. celebrating in Luke 15. It's the older brother. The older brother who stayed. The older brother who stayed. The older brother who didn't tell his The older brother who didn't tell his The older brother who didn't tell his dad, "I wish you were dead." The older dad, "I wish you were dead." The older dad, "I wish you were dead." The older brother who in his eyes has been brother who in his eyes has been brother who in his eyes has been faithful to the fact that he says in verse 28 of to the fact that he says in verse 28 of Luke chapter 15, Luke chapter 15, Luke chapter 15, it says, "Then he became angry." Talking it says, "Then he became angry." Talking it says, "Then he became angry." Talking about the older brother. about the older brother. about the older brother. "And didn't want to go in." Anger again. Anger again. Recurring theme. Recurring theme. Recurring theme. And then it says this in verses 29 And then it says this in verses 29 And then it says this in verses 29 through 30, it says, "Look, through 30, it says, "Look, through 30, it says, "Look, I have been slaving many years for you. I have been slaving many years for you. I have been slaving many years for you. You can hear the tone, right? From the You can hear the tone, right? From the You can hear the tone, right? From the older brother. older brother. older brother. And I have never disobeyed your orders. And I have never disobeyed your orders. And I have never disobeyed your orders. You never gave me a goat You never gave me a goat You never gave me a goat so that I could celebrate with my so that I could celebrate with my so that I could celebrate with my friends.

  40. friends. friends. But But But when this son when this son when this son of yours came, not my brother, of yours came, not my brother, of yours came, not my brother, your son, your son, your son, who has devoured your assets with who has devoured your assets with who has devoured your assets with prostitutes, you slaughtered the prostitutes, you slaughtered the prostitutes, you slaughtered the fattened calf for him." How How dare you? You know, we give these You know, we give these characters a hard time. And we think to ourselves, man, he's got And we think to ourselves, man, he's got a point. But the only way that this point would But the only way that this point would be valid is if we completely forget the be valid is if we completely forget the be valid is if we completely forget the grace of God. The problem is that the grace of God. The problem is that the grace of God. The problem is that the amount of grace bestowed on in the amount of grace bestowed on in the amount of grace bestowed on in the brother's eyes and Jonah's eyes is brother's eyes and Jonah's eyes is brother's eyes and Jonah's eyes is equivalent to the depth of sin. equivalent to the depth of sin. equivalent to the depth of sin. All right, so in the brother's eyes, you All right, so in the brother's eyes, you All right, so in the brother's eyes, you were more gracious to him because he has were more gracious to him because he has were more gracious to him because he has sinned more than me. Do you see the sinned more than me. Do you see the sinned more than me. Do you see the coverage of grace?

  41. coverage of grace? coverage of grace? In the same way that Jonah is assessing In the same way that Jonah is assessing In the same way that Jonah is assessing the situation, he's saying, "Lord, I the situation, he's saying, "Lord, I the situation, he's saying, "Lord, I didn't get as much grace as them because didn't get as much grace as them because didn't get as much grace as them because of how much better I am than them." And here you are with the Ninevites. And here you are with the Ninevites. Look at their sin. Look at their sin. Look at their sin. And look at how much grace you covered And look at how much grace you covered And look at how much grace you covered with them. Here is the problem of our with them. Here is the problem of our with them. Here is the problem of our assessment of sin. There are There are assessment of sin. There are There are assessment of sin. There are There are sinners sinners sinners because you and I would agree with the because you and I would agree with the because you and I would agree with the doctrine of sin. You and I were born doctrine of sin. You and I were born doctrine of sin. You and I were born into sin. We are all sinners. Everyone into sin. We are all sinners. Everyone into sin. We are all sinners. Everyone would agree with that who knows God's would agree with that who knows God's would agree with that who knows God's word. But then, in the back of our mind, word. But then, in the back of our mind, word. But then, in the back of our mind, but then there are real sinners. People who deserve judgment. People who deserve judgment. What angers us What angers us What angers us is when we believe that we have not is when we believe that we have not is when we believe that we have not received the same amount of grace received the same amount of grace received the same amount of grace because we don't have that much sin to because we don't have that much sin to because we don't have that much sin to cover. And this is absolutely And this is absolutely wrong.

  42. Everyone Everyone is dead in their trespasses and sins. is dead in their trespasses and sins. is dead in their trespasses and sins. Not one person deserves the grace of Not one person deserves the grace of Not one person deserves the grace of God. And as soon as we start separating God. And as soon as we start separating God. And as soon as we start separating ourselves as being less of a sinner than ourselves as being less of a sinner than ourselves as being less of a sinner than somebody else, that is the point at somebody else, that is the point at somebody else, that is the point at which anger and bitterness is going to which anger and bitterness is going to which anger and bitterness is going to rule over your life. rule over your life. rule over your life. It's because we have forgotten the grace It's because we have forgotten the grace It's because we have forgotten the grace of God, and therefore we are drifting of God, and therefore we are drifting of God, and therefore we are drifting from the heart of God. from the heart of God. from the heart of God. And this starts And this starts And this starts messing with our priorities. messing with our priorities. messing with our priorities. This is what God does next. He confronts This is what God does next. He confronts This is what God does next. He confronts our priorities. our priorities. our priorities. You see, this is what happens in verse 5 You see, this is what happens in verse 5 You see, this is what happens in verse 5 because in verse 4, he asked the because in verse 4, he asked the because in verse 4, he asked the question, "Is it right for you to be question, "Is it right for you to be question, "Is it right for you to be angry? You know what Jonah does? You know what Jonah does? When the Lord asked a question, When the Lord asked a question, When the Lord asked a question, verse 5 says, verse 5 says, verse 5 says, Jonah left the city Jonah left the city Jonah left the city and found a place east of it.

  43. and found a place east of it. and found a place east of it. The Lord is asking a question, Jonah The Lord is asking a question, Jonah The Lord is asking a question, Jonah turns around and walks off. turns around and walks off. turns around and walks off. And this is what he does. And this is what he does. And this is what he does. He made himself a shelter there and sat He made himself a shelter there and sat He made himself a shelter there and sat in its shade to see what would happen to in its shade to see what would happen to in its shade to see what would happen to the city. It's almost as if Jonah is the city. It's almost as if Jonah is the city. It's almost as if Jonah is hoping for one more strike of judgment hoping for one more strike of judgment hoping for one more strike of judgment against these wicked people. So, he sets against these wicked people. So, he sets against these wicked people.
