Now, more than simply a history of Now, more than simply a history of Now, more than simply a history of ancient kings and kingdoms, this is a ancient kings and kingdoms, this is a ancient kings and kingdoms, this is a testimony. The this series is a testimony. The this series is a testimony. The this series is a testimony to how God works in the world testimony to how God works in the world testimony to how God works in the world and how God keeps his promises through and how God keeps his promises through and how God keeps his promises through everything. See, here's what the Bible's everything. See, here's what the Bible's everything. See, here's what the Bible's doing. The Bible reveals where God was doing. The Bible reveals where God was doing. The Bible reveals where God was then so that you can know where God is then so that you can know where God is then so that you can know where God is now. What was he like then so that you now. What was he like then so that you now. What was he like then so that you can find and know him now. So this week can find and know him now. So this week can find and know him now. So this week we're covering part two of King Hezekiah we're covering part two of King Hezekiah we're covering part two of King Hezekiah whose reign was so significant that we whose reign was so significant that we whose reign was so significant that we need two weeks on him. It's still not need two weeks on him. It's still not need two weeks on him. It's still not enough. And we have four points for this enough. And we have four points for this enough. And we have four points for this sermon. Apologize not three, we have sermon. Apologize not three, we have sermon. Apologize not three, we have four. So we're going to get right into four. So we're going to get right into four. So we're going to get right into it. Here's the four points of the sermon it. Here's the four points of the sermon it. Here's the four points of the sermon today. Faithfulness to God doesn't avoid
-
today. Faithfulness to God doesn't avoid today. Faithfulness to God doesn't avoid crisis. crisis. crisis. Crisis hurls threats at our faith. Crisis hurls threats at our faith. Crisis hurls threats at our faith. Prayers to and promises from God bring Prayers to and promises from God bring Prayers to and promises from God bring his power. And the kingdom is already his power. And the kingdom is already his power. And the kingdom is already here. but not yet. So, first point for here. but not yet. So, first point for here. but not yet. So, first point for us today, faithfulness to God doesn't us today, faithfulness to God doesn't us today, faithfulness to God doesn't avoid crisis. Let's remember how unique avoid crisis. Let's remember how unique avoid crisis. Let's remember how unique Hezekiah's leadership and reign has Hezekiah's leadership and reign has Hezekiah's leadership and reign has been. 2 Kings 185-7 talking about been. 2 Kings 185-7 talking about been. 2 Kings 185-7 talking about Hezekiah, he trusted in the Lord, the Hezekiah, he trusted in the Lord, the Hezekiah, he trusted in the Lord, the God of Israel, so that there was none God of Israel, so that there was none God of Israel, so that there was none like him among all the kings of Judah like him among all the kings of Judah like him among all the kings of Judah after him, nor among those who were after him, nor among those who were after him, nor among those who were before him. for he held fast to the before him. for he held fast to the before him. for he held fast to the Lord. He did not depart from following Lord. He did not depart from following Lord. He did not depart from following him, but kept the commandments that the him, but kept the commandments that the him, but kept the commandments that the Lord commanded Moses. And the Lord was Lord commanded Moses. And the Lord was Lord commanded Moses. And the Lord was with him, and wherever he went out, he with him, and wherever he went out, he with him, and wherever he went out, he prospered. So, a consistent theme prospered. So, a consistent theme prospered. So, a consistent theme throughout this Kings of Judah series, throughout this Kings of Judah series, throughout this Kings of Judah series, if you've been here at all, oftentimes if you've been here at all, oftentimes if you've been here at all, oftentimes the theme is leaders can be complicated, the theme is leaders can be complicated, the theme is leaders can be complicated, leaders can be bad. In Hezekiah, he has leaders can be bad. In Hezekiah, he has leaders can be bad. In Hezekiah, he has his faults and his story ends on a bit his faults and his story ends on a bit his faults and his story ends on a bit of a sour note of pride and selfishness, of a sour note of pride and selfishness, of a sour note of pride and selfishness, but all in all, he's a great king in the but all in all, he's a great king in the but all in all, he's a great king in the line of David. And yet, for all of his line of David. And yet, for all of his line of David. And yet, for all of his uniqueness, for all of his faithfulness, uniqueness, for all of his faithfulness, uniqueness, for all of his faithfulness, for all of his great leadership, for all of his great leadership, for all of his great leadership, that does not mean his life is without that does not mean his life is without that does not mean his life is without crisis and trial. It's actually quite
-
crisis and trial. It's actually quite crisis and trial. It's actually quite the opposite. Look at 2 Chronicles 32:1. the opposite. Look at 2 Chronicles 32:1. the opposite. Look at 2 Chronicles 32:1. After these things, after these acts of After these things, after these acts of After these things, after these acts of faithfulness, faithfulness, faithfulness, he was faithful. he was faithful. he was faithful. So what happened? Sinakarb, king of So what happened? Sinakarb, king of So what happened? Sinakarb, king of Assyria, came and invaded Judah and Assyria, came and invaded Judah and Assyria, came and invaded Judah and encamped against the fortified cities, encamped against the fortified cities, encamped against the fortified cities, thinking to win them for himself. thinking to win them for himself. thinking to win them for himself. He was faithful. And yet crisis came. He was faithful. And yet crisis came. He was faithful. And yet crisis came. One of the interesting things about the One of the interesting things about the One of the interesting things about the Bible and especially this series, Bible and especially this series, Bible and especially this series, there's kind of been two major plot there's kind of been two major plot there's kind of been two major plot points for the kings of Judah, there's points for the kings of Judah, there's points for the kings of Judah, there's been one plot point where you have a been one plot point where you have a been one plot point where you have a king that is faithful, so God brings king that is faithful, so God brings king that is faithful, so God brings blessing and protection. Then you have blessing and protection. Then you have blessing and protection. Then you have kings who are unfaithful, so God brings kings who are unfaithful, so God brings kings who are unfaithful, so God brings judgment and loss. And when we read judgment and loss. And when we read judgment and loss. And when we read those stories, to be honest, whether you those stories, to be honest, whether you those stories, to be honest, whether you believe in Jesus or not, we can all kind believe in Jesus or not, we can all kind believe in Jesus or not, we can all kind of intuitit that that reality because in of intuitit that that reality because in of intuitit that that reality because in our minds it makes sense. Good receives our minds it makes sense. Good receives our minds it makes sense. Good receives good and bad receives bad. That makes good and bad receives bad. That makes good and bad receives bad. That makes sense to us. But there's another plot sense to us. But there's another plot sense to us. But there's another plot line in the Old Testament, another plot line in the Old Testament, another plot line in the Old Testament, another plot line in our lives.
-
line in our lives. line in our lives. Sometimes there are kings that are Sometimes there are kings that are Sometimes there are kings that are terrible. terrible. terrible. They are unfaithful and yet they reign They are unfaithful and yet they reign They are unfaithful and yet they reign longer than faithful kings. They're more longer than faithful kings. They're more longer than faithful kings. They're more prosperous than faithful kings. prosperous than faithful kings. prosperous than faithful kings. Sometimes there's faithful kings who are Sometimes there's faithful kings who are Sometimes there's faithful kings who are do right what's in the eyes of the Lord do right what's in the eyes of the Lord do right what's in the eyes of the Lord and their reigns are cut short and they and their reigns are cut short and they and their reigns are cut short and they face even greater challenges. And what face even greater challenges. And what face even greater challenges. And what we just read is there's been no king we just read is there's been no king we just read is there's been no king like Hezekiah yet he's confronted with like Hezekiah yet he's confronted with like Hezekiah yet he's confronted with this terrible threat of Assyria sent to this terrible threat of Assyria sent to this terrible threat of Assyria sent to destroy them. And then when when all of destroy them. And then when when all of destroy them. And then when when all of us get in this life and we see, well, he us get in this life and we see, well, he us get in this life and we see, well, he was faithful and bad things came and was faithful and bad things came and was faithful and bad things came and they were faithless and good things they were faithless and good things they were faithless and good things came. This reality in God's world came. This reality in God's world came. This reality in God's world rattles us. Because here's what our rattles us. Because here's what our rattles us. Because here's what our collective assumption is. We kind our collective assumption is. We kind our collective assumption is. We kind our assumption is if God is real and he's as assumption is if God is real and he's as assumption is if God is real and he's as strong and as good as he says and we're strong and as good as he says and we're strong and as good as he says and we're faithful to him, our assumption is then faithful to him, our assumption is then faithful to him, our assumption is then crisis would be avoided.
-
crisis would be avoided. crisis would be avoided. If he were who he says he is and we're If he were who he says he is and we're If he were who he says he is and we're faithful, crisis would be avoided. faithful, crisis would be avoided. faithful, crisis would be avoided. Because if you're here and you're a Because if you're here and you're a Because if you're here and you're a Christian, if you're here, you're not a Christian, if you're here, you're not a Christian, if you're here, you're not a Christian. I'm really glad that you're Christian. I'm really glad that you're Christian. I'm really glad that you're here. I hope today helps you take steps here. I hope today helps you take steps here. I hope today helps you take steps into what does it mean to believe in into what does it mean to believe in into what does it mean to believe in Jesus. He's what you're looking for. But Jesus. He's what you're looking for. But Jesus. He's what you're looking for. But if you're a Christian, you have if you're a Christian, you have if you're a Christian, you have experienced the power of God at some experienced the power of God at some experienced the power of God at some point in your life. That's why you're a point in your life. That's why you're a point in your life. That's why you're a Christian. You heard the gospel and it Christian. You heard the gospel and it Christian. You heard the gospel and it didn't just No one believes Jesus is who didn't just No one believes Jesus is who didn't just No one believes Jesus is who the Bible says that he is because of a the Bible says that he is because of a the Bible says that he is because of a mere intellectual exercise. No, there mere intellectual exercise. No, there mere intellectual exercise. No, there was a moment, Christian, where you heard was a moment, Christian, where you heard was a moment, Christian, where you heard the gospel and it flooded your heart the gospel and it flooded your heart the gospel and it flooded your heart with power. power to forgive you, power with power. power to forgive you, power with power. power to forgive you, power to heal you, power to restore you, power to heal you, power to restore you, power to heal you, power to restore you, power to reconcile, power to bring joy, power to reconcile, power to bring joy, power to reconcile, power to bring joy, power to bring clarity. to bring clarity. to bring clarity. This is what the gospel does when it's This is what the gospel does when it's This is what the gospel does when it's believed. There's power in it. This is believed. There's power in it. This is believed. There's power in it. This is the biblical witness. When Jesus shows the biblical witness. When Jesus shows the biblical witness. When Jesus shows up, it's his power to instruct and heal up, it's his power to instruct and heal up, it's his power to instruct and heal and to save and provide that's the and to save and provide that's the and to save and provide that's the occasion for faith and salvation to occasion for faith and salvation to occasion for faith and salvation to spring up in people's lives. If you're a spring up in people's lives. If you're a spring up in people's lives. If you're a Christian, you've known the power of God Christian, you've known the power of God Christian, you've known the power of God and the gospel.
-
and the gospel. and the gospel. But But But we all struggle then because we've known we all struggle then because we've known we all struggle then because we've known God's power. We all struggle when the God's power. We all struggle when the God's power. We all struggle when the God that we've known as stronger than God that we've known as stronger than God that we've known as stronger than what ails us, what ails us, what ails us, stronger than what's enslaved us, stronger than what's enslaved us, stronger than what's enslaved us, doesn't stop the crisis in front of us. doesn't stop the crisis in front of us. doesn't stop the crisis in front of us. We know he's stronger, but the crisis is We know he's stronger, but the crisis is We know he's stronger, but the crisis is here and he's not doing anything about here and he's not doing anything about here and he's not doing anything about it. It makes us wonder, does he care? it. It makes us wonder, does he care? it. It makes us wonder, does he care? Does he see? Or what happens often is we Does he see? Or what happens often is we Does he see? Or what happens often is we fall into this trap where we begin to fall into this trap where we begin to fall into this trap where we begin to believe that our circumstances are a believe that our circumstances are a believe that our circumstances are a direct reflection of our faithfulness direct reflection of our faithfulness direct reflection of our faithfulness and nearness to God. So what happens is and nearness to God. So what happens is and nearness to God. So what happens is we buy the lie that if there's blessing we buy the lie that if there's blessing we buy the lie that if there's blessing in my life, it must be because I God is in my life, it must be because I God is in my life, it must be because I God is pleased with me. If there's blessing in pleased with me. If there's blessing in pleased with me. If there's blessing in my life, it must mean God's pleased with my life, it must mean God's pleased with my life, it must mean God's pleased with my choices, pleased with my decisions, my choices, pleased with my decisions, my choices, pleased with my decisions, pleased with my life. And then if pleased with my life. And then if pleased with my life. And then if there's crisis in my life, well maybe there's crisis in my life, well maybe there's crisis in my life, well maybe there's something secret in me, some sin there's something secret in me, some sin there's something secret in me, some sin in me that I'm being punished for. But in me that I'm being punished for. But in me that I'm being punished for. But our stories aren't that simple. They're our stories aren't that simple. They're our stories aren't that simple. They're not that simple.
-
not that simple. not that simple. No king was faithful like Hezekiah. And No king was faithful like Hezekiah. And No king was faithful like Hezekiah. And yet the Assyrians are here. His nearness yet the Assyrians are here. His nearness yet the Assyrians are here. His nearness to God and your nearness to God cannot to God and your nearness to God cannot to God and your nearness to God cannot be measured by circumstances. It is be measured by circumstances. Summary
The sermon emphasizes that Jesus Christ is worthy of all praise and worship. It references Jesus as the Lion of Judah, David's root, and the Lamb who conquered death to ransom humanity. The practical takeaway is to fix our eyes on Jesus, acknowledge His worthiness, and remember that His light overcomes darkness, even in a broken world.
